Album Description
Music for flute and piano is very popular these days, not only for performers to study but for serious listeners who are drawn to the sensuous sounds of that instrument. American music for this combination is remarkably popular, if you just look at the record listings. This new release not only features two premiere recordings (the Schocker and Warner) but a particular theme common to all four: the influence of jazz. Each of the composers embraces this form from a remarkably different perspective. For one, it is the use of direct lyric and rhythmic quotes; another employs jazz "licks" to create an echo of jazz. Occasionally, subtle references to major jazz players are brought into the mix. Sometimes the choice is to retain the "sound and feel" of jazz while remaining entirely original. This recording is a voyage with jazz as the reference point. The joy of this recording is participating in this journey, encountering the humorous, introspective, reckless, poignant, eclectic and alluring personalities that inhabit the jazz spirit. (It’s interesting to note that these composers were all born within the period that jazz had its strongest hold on the public-especially the late 1950’s.)

5 out of 5 stars What happened to popculture??.......2007-06-20

It looks like others agree that this music brings back major memories for the 20-somethin crowd around here... No joke, if you grew up in the 90's you are going to feel seriously depressed (in a good way though! haha)... Modern music just cant touch this. These guys along with greenday, pearl jam and the offspring were the reason the 90's kicked ***.

Highly recommended album... although just beware that it will make you feel kinda sad about the direction music and popculture has gone these days...

4 out of 5 stars A nice trip down memory lane.......2007-06-06

I was perusing the cd racks last weekend at my local public library when I stumbled upon "Outside Looking In: The Best of The Gin Blossoms". The Gin Blossoms immediately conjured up fond memories of my post high school/early college years. I was in on the band long before "Hey Jealousy" became a huge smash for the band. So nostalgic for the past, I checked out the cd. I almost forgot just how catchy the band's music was. They were candy for my ears. The band really had a knack for cracking out one catchy pop/rock song after another. Sure the band had a few misses too. I never liked "Mrs. Rita". That has always been my least favorite Gin Blossom song because it is so devoid of a good pop hook. I was so pleased that the band included my personal favorite songs "Cajun Song" and "Until I Fall Away" (which I always liked more than the overplayed "Hey Jealousy"). I'm glad I picked up "Outside Looking In". It brought back memories of life that was simpler (and devoid of bills and rent).

5 out of 5 stars A topnotch keeper !.......2007-02-17

This is just perfect! All of the Blossom's hits combined on one handy cd! If you love these guys or some of their numerous hits you can't go wrong with this cd. These songs will be played over and over forever!

5 out of 5 stars Great collection from the Gin Blossoms........2007-01-27

This is a greatest hits cd from the Gin blossoms, who unfortunately only had 2 major albums (New Miserable Experience and Congratulations, I'm sorry) and 1 album prior to major label success "dusted", and the original A & M release Up and Crumbling EP. The songs on this are essentially the best of their two studio albums together and a couple of soundtrack song "till I hear it from you" from empire records soundtrack and "Idiot Summer" from Wayne's world 2 and a b-side on a couple of their singles. But, it is the best of their music, and it still sound good. An original sound then, still refreshing now. All their big ones are on here, enjoy. Note, in late 2006 they did release a new album with most of the original gang, Major Lodge victory, it sound great. If they would have stayed together longer. Also check out the Gas Giants and the Poppin' wheelies, it the lead singer's band following the disbanding of the Gin Blossoms.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic for the Gin Blossoms? This is just what you're looking for........2006-08-02

Basically, I have lots of memories attached to five Gin Blossoms songs, and this is exactly the CD I needed to get them all in one place. This band rocks and this compilation is excellent. Truth be told, I do skip some of the tracks on the CD, but I'm just too impatient for the songs I knew back in school!

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19

I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.

5 out of 5 stars great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07

Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.

5 out of 5 stars Supurb.......2007-03-08

This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-02-24

This is a very good soundtrack to a very good movie. The music is amazingly composed and is nice to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-01-17

This CD is excellent! All the music from the movie in its entirety, all the songs are complete songs, and the songs are all top notch compositions.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30

A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.

With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

5 out of 5 stars Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17

This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.

5 out of 5 stars How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16

Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.

This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"

The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Historical CD Ever!.......2003-11-21

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Bodeans are awesome!.......2007-01-28

I know not many kids listen to this kind of music, but I've seen them 5 times, and they are goood! I reccomend any bodeans cd, especially "Joe Dirt Car," a double cased live cd of songs from '85 to '95. "Say about love" is a great song, and this version is cool, but I don't know if there is a video. All in all, pretty good material, even though it was released 20 years ago.
Also reccomended: ANYTHING BODEANS, blink 182, green day, barenaked ladies, hootie and the blowfish, john hiatt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, john mayer, weezer, the rippingtons, lyle lovett. Every genre is good!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-11

As I said in my review of "Joe Dirt Car", I am a BIG fan of these guys. This is a great album itself because it includes "Say About Love" on it. If you like the BoDeans, listen to this cd. You won't be sorry you did. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent blend of alt country and rock.......2006-06-04

Very sound album, definately their strongest work. Rediscovered this gem recently when I found a box of old cassetes from my college days. Gave it one listen and went out immediately to buy it on CD. Still sounds as fresh and energetic today as it did 20 years ago. If you like the alt country midwetern bar band sound, I stongly suggest you give it a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente ¡¡.......2005-10-29

Mork

5 out of 5 stars Very solid CD - well worth the money!.......2005-07-29

I knew a few of the songs on here from the radio, but didn't
know they were all from the BoDeans. Having listened to the
whole CD now, all I can say is "wow"!

Wish I found this sooner - this is absolutely fantastic music
for driving down the open road with the wind in your hair.
Really stands the test of time, and thanks to this one I'll be
picking up the entire rest of their catalog!

5 out of 5 stars Memphis Duo Comes Hella Hard on This Jizoint.......2006-10-13

Ball and G came with nothin short of fire in 1994's classic On the Outside Looking In. The album is loaded with hard, political, trill, and fiery lyrics, so you know they comin' real. Beatwise, the songs for the most part are immaculate, with a mix of that syrupy southern twang and whiny G-Funk. They come bangin' on wax on "Lick Em Up Shot" with a menacing beat. I love the Issac Hayes sample on No Mercy, paired with an awesome whiny keyboard riff. Ideas of the black experience and racism is totally evident on the classic "So What U Sayin'" with a classic guitar riff and keyboard driven G-Funk beat. The title track touches on the "pen," the "system," or the "tank,"whichever you prefer, and the realities surrounding it, all over a sick, melodic beat. All in all, this album deserves classic status because of the top-notch lyrics and production.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Ball N' G.......2005-10-09

very differnt type of beats than on "Comin out Hard" & "On Top of the World"...Def. has much old School influence, but still the tight rhymes we can expect from Orange Mound's Best. My Fav tracks would have to be "Playa's nite out", "Crumbs 2 Brixx", "Anotha Day in the Hood", & "So what u Sayin'"...Although every track here is f***in' tight. Kinda hard to find this...so if u do, cop it!

4 out of 5 stars Inside Looking Out.......2005-07-03

Memphis, TN duo Eightball & MJG in their early years of the game dropped a second Suave House release On The Outside Looking In. "Lay It Down" featuring Thorough & Crime Boss is the highlight of this album to end it off on a memerable note. As MJG usually plays the background (since Eightball is constantly appearing as a featured guest) flexes his muscle on "Lick'em Up Shot". Both have solo songs on here, Eightball's "No Mercy" and MJG's title track. This, in comparison to their later work, is a lot funkier as they were still searching for a signature sound. The both are good with their descriptive tales of their lifestyles and past experiences, but Eightball is more the hustler and MJG is the pimp. Not the classic as On Top Of The World, but is still worth checking out the history of their careers.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER CLASSIC ALBUM BY THE DUO.......2001-04-15

Eightball & MJG's first album "Commin' Out Hard" was awesome. I didn't think they would be able to come out with an album even better. Well, they did. And this album - "On the Outside Lookin' In" is one of those rare albums that introduce us to something new, one of those albums that take rap to another level. And that's what this album is all about. The crew continues to lace us with nothing but straight game. Comming out of Orange Mound, Memphis, these two young rappers are some of the realest ones there is and some of the most talented as well. All over the album we get stories about street life, the rap industry, pimpin' or just having a good time. Eightball and MJG both have special voices and deliveries and you just cannot decide which one is better. Another thing that makes this album so unique is the production. It's amazing, on many parts is not just great beats - it's music! Complicated beats with a lot of instruments and changing melodies. They did a hell of a job there. That's a classic gangsta rap album.

From the first skyrocket notes of Dave Hole's slide guitar, the Australian's sixth album for Alligator Records is a sonic thrill ride. It helps that few musical sounds are as exciting as steel pipe on steel strings--especially since Hole's skills as a singer and songwriter don't match his incendiary musicianship. And Hole's got an edge over almost every other slide guitarist; when he was learning the technique as a teen, he broke his pinky and switched the slide to his left index finger, playing over the top of the fretboard. The greater strength and flexibility of that digit makes him sound like Elmore James on steroids, especially when he's copping James's "It Hurts Me Too" on "Outside Looking In." A surprising highlight is the star-crossed love ballad "Out of My Reach," where Hole sings a gentle melody on poignant lyrics supported by pretty, light arpeggios and saves his slide for a sweet slow solo break and fills. There's also the acoustic "Nobody," a low-key kiss-off that further proves Hole can be as gracefully unamplified as he can be thunderously cranked. Of course, the latter description fits the majority of this album's bracing, zingy performances. --Ted Drozdowski

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must be played loud to appreciate.......2001-09-07

This cd has multiple personality disorder. Played at normal, quiet levels, it is a good, but not superb recording featuring lots of good slide guitar work from what sounds like an interesting, innovative guitarist.

Turn up the volume loud, and the brilliance of Hole's playing really starts to shine through. There is a subtle resonance that is simultaneously sweet and sour that shines through at higher volume levels. The two best tracks on this cd are Jenny Lee (appears on Alligator's 30th Anniversary CD - a very good collection by the way) and an excellent version of BB King and Canned Heat's You Move Me So.

If Hole is touring within a two-day drive of your home, go see him live (unfortunately, he is presently finishing up his US tour and will be heading back to Australia in a few days). Hole is the most entertaining, brilliant guitarist I have ever seen (out of >200+ live shows). His guitarwork is so lively, exciting, tight and innovative that it is impossible for any fan of slide guitar, blues or rock to avoid head-nodding and toe tapping or just plain grinning. Not to mention his showmanship - he jumps and slides across stage like he was 23, not his true age of 53. Fantastic.

Support quality music. Buy this cd and see Dave live; it would be worth the price of a ticket to Australia to see him play.

5 out of 5 stars Hole's backed to his best moments!!!!!.......2001-07-06

This sixth album of this "monster"of slide guitar makes me feel so better and happier than ever!!!Great return Hole. The other reviewer resumed in one word all of the intensity of this cd,and i agreed "TRIUMPHANT"!!!!!! When i've heard Outside Looking In,with the other interpretation to "It Hurts me too",i've tought you've done so right. It touch me inside my soul with rare feelings! This is an album to be heard for so long long many times... An album of a blues guitar man with his own way to play slide guitar, like only few men ever did with this competency!!! Great album Hole, and of course all of your fans at all of the corners in the world...they're happier than never!!! Thanks a LOT!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Hole In One.......2001-06-06

Six albums in and Australia's Dave Hole has yet to stumble. "Outside Looking In" continues the grand tradition established with the slide god's Alligator debut "Short Fuse Blues." Although Hole seems to fill every available space with steel on strings, it never gets tiresome. Employing a rather unorthodox style which sees him approach the fretboard with his slide hand over the top rather than underneath, Hole's name certainly deserves to be mentioned alongside those of legends like Elmore James and Duane Allman. Razor sharp assaults like "He Knows The Rules" and "Jenny Lee" strike like lightning and herald Hole's arrival as perhaps the greatest living practitioner of slide guitar blues. Triumphant...

5 out of 5 stars The IMPERIALS...IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ?...YES !!.......2006-08-02

There's been a lot of talk lately that Little Anthony and the IMPERIALS are under serious consideration for induction into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. I say YES YES YES !! The IMPERIALS most DEFINITELY SHOULD be inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME.In fact, they should have been among the FIRST groups inducted. They, along with THE MIRACLES and DELLS (and to a lesser extent, the IMPRESSIONS),were the only groups of the DOO WOP era of the 1950's to maintain consistant success well into the '60's and '70's. That alone should have gotten them inducted.Their songs have become recognized classics ,having been recorded by artists as diverse as SERGIO MENDEZ,LINDA RONSTADT, FRANK SINATRA,REBA MCENTIRE .and others. They could very well have been the very first "ADULT CONTEMPORARY" GROUP,establishing a new level of class and sophistication never before seen in R&b groups, while at the same time never abandoning their DOO WOP roots. The LETTERMEN,for one, seem to have re-recorded every song they ever made.Songs such as TEARS ON MY PILLOW,HURT SO BAD,I'M ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN,TWO PEOPLE IN THE WORLD,GOING OUT OF MY HEAD,SHIMMY SHIMMY KO KO BOP,{which was featured in the TOM HANKS hit movie "BIG"},TAKE ME BACK,I'M ALRIGHT,BETTER USE YOUR HEAD,OUT OF SIGHT-OUT OF MIND,I MISS YOU SO,HURT,HELP ME FIND A WAY,and others have been recorded and re-recorded many times by others over the last 45 years. GOING OUT OF MY HEAD,for one, has had over 100 recorded versions, but none sounds as good as Little Anthony and The IMPERIALS'original version. They have also influnced an entire generation of artists , such as THE STYLISTICS, DELFONICS,BLUE MAGIC,MANHATTANS,CHI-LITES,and many more.In fact, the entire Philidelphia-based soft - soul movement of the 1970's,as exemplified by producers such as KENNY GAMBLE,LEON HUFF,THOM BELL,VAN MCCOY,and others, with it's emphasis on full symphonic orchestration and vocal harmony, can be traced directly back to the IMPERIALS'ground breaking early '60's recordings with TEDDY RANDAZZO and the late DON COSTA.Go back to the earliest days of rock and roll and they are there, with appearances on such shows as THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW, AMERICAN BANDSTAND,PERRY COMO'S KRAFT MUSIC HALL,ABC'S SHINDIG,NBC'S HULLABLOO,THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL,and the MERV GRIFFIN SHOW - all the way up to their show stopping performances on the 2002 & 2003 PBS MUSIC SPECIALS-the IMPERIALS-ANTHONY GOURDINE, ERNEST WRIGHT ,CLARENCE COLLINS ,& SAMMY STRAIN ,-most definitely SHOULD {along with the MIRACLES,who STILL haven't been inducted }-be inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ! one listen to this cd,combining two of their best 60's albums, and YOU'LL SEE WHY !!there are at least 10 chart hits here ... including the rarely heard "MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF", strangely not included in any of their "GREATEST HITS" COMPILATIONS..and sadly deleted from most oldies stations' play lists today...THE POWERFUL "OUT OF SIGHT-OUT OF MIND " which to me is better than the original version (by the FIVE KEYS} and ranks with the DELLS' classic hit "STAY IN MY CORNER " as having the L-O-N-G-E-S-T HELD NOTE of ANY SONG IN ROCK HISTORY, and the dynamic THOM BELL produced "HELP ME FIND A WAY (to say I love you) ...a song that should have been a MUCH BIGGER HIT when first released in 1969...and WOULD HAVE BEEN...had it been released just 4 years earlier or later...In all...A FIVE STAR COLLECTION !!

4 out of 5 stars Tauber for the first buyer.......1999-01-02

Richard Tauber was, in my opinion, the most seductive and complex singer of this century. His voice was excellent, but not in itself, just as a vehicle for an infinity of shadings, in a plethora of styles. He was arguably the greatest ever operetta singer but his gifts were perfectly expressing themselves in lied, in popular song and in a great part of the opera repertoire ("heldentenor" excepted). Like Kreisler in violin playing, Tauber represented the essence of the Viennese spirit. His vocal specialties included the sweteest mezzavoce or headvoice one could hope for. He was accessible and highly refined in the same time. For the very low price of this Gala CD, you can taste the complex artistry of Richard Tauber, both in his German (better) period and in the "English" one. The reason I'm giving 4, not 5 stars to this CD is that I believe his all-German CD concotions to be more valuable. But for this price...
