The well known (Foo Fighters), barely known (Jack Johnson), and virtually unknown (Andrew WK) are all represented to fine effect on this predominantly modern-rock-leaning dozen-song soundtrack. As befitting the flick's snowboard theme, most of the cool cuts are by pop-punky sporty faves such as Lit (whose edgy and melodic "Lipstick and Bruises" is the single), Eve 6 (with a dynamic new song, "Anytime"), and the Foo Fighters, who turn in a reworking of a B-side in "Win or Lose." A couple of great songs (albeit odd choices for a teen-oriented soundtrack, especially when sharing space with the hip-hop Planet Asia and Will.I.Am) are the James Gang's 1977 hit, the sexy, bluesy rock romp "Funk No. 49," and the new but guitar-driven, classic-rock-oriented "Green Light Girl," a forceful offering from Doyle Bramhall II & Smokestack. British solo artist Andrew WK turns in an irresistible, ultra-energetic, retro, almost "glam" power-pop tune in "She Is Beautiful," while mellower moments from Jimmy Eat World and Jack Johnson aren't as compelling. Ultimately, if Out Cold is a slightly schizophrenic compilation of mostly previously released cuts, it's still a worthwhile collection for open-minded listeners. --Katherine Turman

Additional Songs Not On The Soundtrack.......2006-01-20
Here are some additional songs missing from the soundtrack:
Just The Way You Are - William M. Joel
In A Car - Lefty
Falling In Love - Linn B
King Of All The World - Old 97'S
Can't Give You Anything (But My Love) - The Stylistics
For Anyone - The Color Red
These Things - Looper
Decent, But bargain bin decent..........2005-10-08
This is a fairly solid soundtrack. Has an up beat mood, Any common Alternative fan could get into. Lit, Sum 41 & Eve 6 songs are the highlights on here IMO. But there is still one flaw to be announced. The one song that in the movie stands for the two lead characters love for one another. Weezers "Island In The Sun" which would have made this compilation seem more complete.
P.S. When will someone get the great idea of putting ALL the movies songs onto the soundtrack?!?
name of that song?.......2005-08-05
does anybody know the name and artist of the song that plays when inga walks into the bar?

The film has a great soundtrack:
Eve 6, James Gang, Jack Johnson, Sum 41, Foo Fighters, Lit, Planet Asia, Jimmy Eat World, Doyle Bramhall, Handsome Devil, The Color Red, Andrew W.K.
It's truely awesome. A compilation of rare and recently-released tracks ranging from pop to rock. I'm just sick of hearing complaints from people going, "Oh, man! 'Island in the Sun' is not on the Out Cold soundtrack!"
Go out and buy Weezer's whole album: Weezer (Green Album). The band needs the money. Check out their new record, too: Make Believe. I recommend buying both the Out Cold soundtrack and the new Weezer album this month at the same time. Rock on!
Besides, "Island in the Sun" has already been on the radio and was played at least 5 times in the movie. Like American Pie 2, they don't use a lot of songs on their soundtrack that are already popular singles because most people who buy it don't want to hear what they already have heard a hundred times.
P.S. I'm not in the band Weezer and I do not work at their record label.

For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tillie¹s Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
The Soundtrack to Cinderella Man is great.......2007-01-11
Cinderella Man is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the soundtrack does not disappoint. They have all of the powerful songs heard on the DVD. It even has the songs that you could barely hear in the movie because they were simply background music to the scenes. For instance, when Mike Wilson and Jim Braddock sit down together after work and have a drink and discuss the troubled times their nation was facing during the depression, you can faintly hear a song called, "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky" by Roane's Pennsylvanians. That song is on here in its entirety.
The other example is found in the scene where Joe Gould is seen driving off after just speaking with Jim about his hopes of getting him another fight after Jim had defeated Corn Griffin. Joe is trying to leave before Mae can see him because he knows she would not approve of his talking with Jim and the potential of another fight for her husband. Anyway, just as he gets in the car, and as he drives off, you can here Bud Freeman's "Tillie's Downtown Now" being played--another great song from that era.
Every sound of Cinderella Man is found on this soundtrack. The lone downside to this CD is that the songs are not found in the order they appear in the movie. The first four songs are in order and the last five or so are in order, and the rest is thrown in the middle. They are all there, but as is typical for most soundtracks, they don't all coincide with the order presented in the picture.
This soundtrack is a terrific purchase for any fan of this movie. You will not be disappointed.
Another good score from Thomas Newman........2006-11-07
Thomas Newman is becoming quite the composer. He has such a unique style, but is able to use it to compliment the movies he scores without the music sounding out of place or out of period. The tracks "Turtle" and "Pugilism" are fun to listen to. The first track is short and yet somehow moving. There are enough songs from the period to lend the right flavor to the soundtrack (including a track of Paul Giamatti whistling "Londonderry Air"). This one's definitely worth having if you're a fan of Thomas Newman.
Very nice.......2006-08-03
I suppose this would have been better, like another reviewer said, if some of the tracks had been more than minute-long cuts of the music from Cinderella Man. Still, it's a fantastic soundtrack!--I don't know what "conventional" meant when someone called it that, but if you like sad and somber music, you'll certainly like this. Try it. It's almost better than the movie itself, and the movie was great. After this, I have to hear Thomas Newman's other work.
Why..........2006-07-11
I dearly loved the movie, "Cinderella Man," and the music in it. However, why on earth, on the CD, did they play only a minute, or less, of some of the best music? Like, "Hope of the Irish," I liked that so much, but 52 seconds dosn't do it. In the film it was at least 3 minutes or more. I have decided not to buy the soundtrack simply because of this.
A fairly conventional score for Thomas Newman, but enjoyable nonetheless.......2006-03-25
Cinderella Man is, in a way, a return to conventional scoring for Thomas Newman. For a long while we've heard world instruments and percussion banging it out before stopping to allow beautiful themes to grasp our souls, but in Cinderella Man the effort is more restrained. It is largely a score for piano and strings, and fans of Thomas Newman will have heard the sound before. But, all the same, it is an enjoyable score for Newman fans of both kinds, and while it does take a while to get into a full expression of the story, it is definitely worth the wait.
The piano is used a lot in the score, making appearances across most of the tracks, including the gentle "The Inside Out" or in "Mae", appear with the delicate strings that we have come to expect from Newman. "Pugilism" makes use of pizzicato movements, whereas the two Irish influenced tracks, "Hope of the Irish" and "Turtle", bring back some more unconventional instruments as one would expect. But largely, the score meanders in the background, establishing a delicate tone and texture, but never really taking a forefront. Of course, I must make mention of the wonderful "Weehawken Ferry", which presents a crisp walking movement of strings, similar to what was heard in Shawshank Redemption. However, it is not until the final few tracks that the music finally free's itself from it's subdued nature and reaches out. "Big Right" explodes with blaring french horns and sharp strings, until it finally fades off and allows the highlight track, "Cinderella Man", to come in. This track is Newman at his best, with his typical soaring string arrangement of the main theme introduced in "The Inside Out", before finally reverting back to quiet woodwinds and piano near the end.
Cinderella Man is by no means an innovative or groundbreaking score - it's a fairly conventional drama score. The same adjectives could be applied to the movie as well. Is it worth the pick-up? Definitely, if you are looking for more Newman goodness. However, if you're looking to get into the world of Newman with a more colorful score - try "Angels in America" or "Road to Perdition".

Customer Reviews:
I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30
Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.
The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.
I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.
There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."
But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.
First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.
Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?
On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?
The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).
There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.
With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?
Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.
In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.
Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10
Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.
ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21
Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.
Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.
Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:
* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.
* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.
* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.
* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.
* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.
Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.
SUCH MAGICAL MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!.......2003-01-19
"Evita." "Sunset Blvd." "Starlight Express." "Jesus Christ Superstar." "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." "Requiem." "Aspects of Love." The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.
A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21
This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!

BORNE UNDER PUNCHES.......2006-07-12
On page 12 of the enclosed booklet, Charles Bullen asks "How long can you keep saying to yourself and anyone else that you are a non-musician?"
The ideas that in fact began to so radicalize more popular forms of music in the 1970s were ideas -- or at least attitudes -- about the creative process, including our place in culture, society and the world, that had been breaking down traditional forms for most of the twentieth century. The crux was at once one of reacting against tradition by leaving recognized techniques behind and the equally crucial effort to subvert the expectations and perceptions of both artist and audience. The revolution took longer to reach music than other forms simply because the music of the likes of This Heat became completely entangled in a new kind of process reliant on far more than a pencil, eraser and blank manuscript -- in this case, imagine sitting down to write a violin concerto prior to the invention of the violin. It would not, as had already been done and done again, be enough to cut and paste tape. Capturing and reassessing sound and its value as music; reinventing instrument roles; setting aside musicianship in favor of accident; inviting the studio to become an active participant rather than passive witness; relieving the artist of absolute responsibility for any given piece; all these and other issues became elements of the operating principles essential to generating new work. There are few better examples of this new work to be found than within the catalog assembled by This Heat.
As Bullen's question implies, you might begin outside the medium, completely free of the teaching. But in short enough time the dedication to your ideas will direct you to become a new kind of musician. Not the self-taught variety so much as driven by invention to ravage the pre-existing context. And rather than artificially eschewing "Music" ( in this sense, akin to Eno's early insistence on "dilettante" status), the opposite occurs: the artist's work, effort and understanding fundamentally and profoundly expand the musical vocabulary. The change, once realized, shifts our comprehension as listeners, fills in all those wanting gaps of perception and literally forces our ideas about what we hear and how we hear it to grow. Which makes This Heat and this box all the more important.
With any luck you already have the limited edition from ReR MEGACORP which includes the mini "Nivelles". If not, don't hesitate to get a copy of this release. In an instance in which remastering actually serves the music instead of merely serving the sound, listening to the complete catalog is no less overwhelming today or tomorrow than when this work first appeared. And in reading their running conversation as published in the accompanying booklet, it almost hurts to realize that such remarkable work could only result from almost exhausting dedication, days of conflict and the group's singular talent for the self-imposed rigors of critical evaluation, and for the use and reuse of their own material. In willing sacrifice, these guys lived and breathed this stuff. After all, beautiful sound was and is all around us. But fewer still could ingest, transform and subsume the aural surround -- here comprised of the random and the organized, the mundane occurrence as well as the circulating currents of ideas -- as did This Heat. Fused to an uncompromising social and moral perspective, their aesthetic produced this music in a way that both defines the period and remains one of the few valid perspectives on mapping the seeming chaos we invent simply by being and doing.
English Krautrock.......2006-06-26
Great box set. Fans of the "Blue and Yellow" and "Deceit" albums should get this for the "Made Available" (Peel Sessions) and "Health & efficiency" discs, which are both awesome. "Repeat" and "Live" discs are also pretty good. Accompanying booklet has interesting interviews on history and music-making technique. For the unitiated, This Heat were pretty much English Krautrock. Vocals and lyrics are of the post-punk political variety. Music features great drumming and edgy guitars, with textural layers of tape loops and organ. Sounds kind of eastern at times. Not very song-oriented (except on Deceit) but had a high tune quotient for this sort of music. It was kind of ahead of its time, but I guess this would mean that the bands This Heat copied (Can etc..) were WAY ahead of their time.

This collaboration by brothers Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis guitarist) and John Hackett is a skilled and sensitive interpretation of selected works by classical composer Erik Satie. 2002 reissue, originally released in 2000. Inside Out label.
Customer Reviews:
Actually, 4 1/2 stars... Just shy of Perfection!.......2007-07-05
Exquisite' showcase: Hacketts' Satie. I'm giving this my 3rd listen so far
since purchasing today. It glows on you like a magical silk robe. Steve's
departure from Genesis was thought to be another* death knell for (what was
thought to be) the finest Prog. Rock group in history. John has been adding support to his more famous brother since the 1st solo project (more 'Genesis' than the band at the time). Satie's century-old compositions have been more than just a proving ground for classical musicians thru time and like many true strokes of genius, the piano works weren't thought to be 'music' at all by some of the most respected critics of the day. We have
the pleasure of recognizing it's beauty today, in this fine adaptation.
Steve was one of 2 great rock guitarists who began performing the electric
guitar w/ his band while sitting down in a chair (classically trained so).
The other guy is Robert Fripp (who's Crimson Kings have graduated to play
with S.H. on more recent prog. projects). Respected, is the word that is
often used to describe the subdued, previously nerdy Steve. Brother John's
flute is honed into an ethereal transport through space/time on this CD. If
you don't share it with a friend or lover, you're neither.
*Steve was the heart transplant for early Genesis. The next death knell in
that book was the departure of Gabriel.
Satie for Guitar (and flute).......2006-10-06
Had the idea recently to transpose Satie (specifically the gymnopedie) for guitar, then found out that the Hackett Bros. have already done so. After reviewing samples, I'm a bit disappointed that they chose flute for some of the melodies -- was hoping for all guitar -- but these are very natural, warm adaptions, especially Pièces Froides No.2. Also see The Guitarist John Williams (name of the album) for more Satie on guitar.
Haunting and hypnotic.......2004-01-10
"Sketches of Satie" is a collection of Erik Satie's compositions for piano, rearranged and performed by Steve Hackett (guitar) and his brother John (flute). The songs translate so well to flute and guitar, it's hard to believe they weren't originally composed for these instruments.
Fans of early Genesis won't be surprised by Hackett's virtuosity; the revelation here is John Hackett on flute. John's playing is so natural and fluent, it seems almost divinely inspired. On the first six tracks (Gnossiennes 3, 2 and 1 and Gymnopédies 3, 2 and 1), Steve provides subtle and steady accompaniment, allowing John's flute to handle the melodies. The next three tracks (the "Pièces Froides") highlight Steve on guitar, but John rejoins him for the rest of the album. The performances exhibit a hypnotic, haunting, and exotic beauty. Steve Hackett again demonstrates why he's one of the world's best and most versatile guitarists; by ceding the spotlight to his brother, he exhibits admirable modesty and restraint.
You don't have to be a fan of Satie or Hackett to enjoy this - just someone who enjoys gentle instrumental music that stimulates the mind while calming the soul.
The classical side of Hackett.......2003-09-19
This is Steve Hackett at his classical best, along with the excellent flute-playing by his brother. The melodies are wonderful--perfect for when you want to relax and unwind. Other Steve Hackett albums in the classical vein are Bay Of Kings; Momentum; There Are Many Sides To The Night; and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Dont expect his old stuff , but..........2003-02-04
A nice cd to get up in the morning and still feel in a dreamy kinda mood for the next couple of hours...if you are looking for progressive stuff check his first 3 or 4 albums...and thats it! there is nothing more worth checking out...this has his acoustic gt sound and his bro is a nice flute player too, and of course , the music of Satie, which has inspired so many Prog groups, is also great, but still you can not really relate this to earlier works of his...nice anyways!

Another overlooked hair metal band.......2006-05-25
1990's Break Out was the debut (and only) release from Cold Sweat, which was formed by former Keel guitarist Marc Ferrari. Equal parts Warrant, Dokken, and L.A. Guns, this is exactly the kind of hair metal abum you'd expect to find in 1990 - plenty of hard rockin' tunes plus the obligatory ballad. A cover of the Willie Dixon classic I Just Want To Make Love To You was a nice surprise. This is very melodic hard rock. It may not be very original, but it is still a very good album if you're into this kind of music. The band never gained that much attention, but given the sheer volume of similar bands at the time, it's not really surprising.
Another casualty of the early-90's grunge-a-thon, Cold Sweat was never heard from again.

Solo album with a diverse lineup.......2007-06-09
If you're into heavy metal, you must have heard of Jack Frost; or at least some of the bands he's played in. From his own band Seven Witches to the terribly underrated Bronx Casket Company, he also played with Metalium, Speed, and Savatage, albeit in different capacities. Out in the Cold is his second solo album after 2003's Raise Your Fist to Metal.
The album sees a huge list of guest musicians supporting Jack Frost; in fact, there is a different lineup on pretty much every single song. From hard rock singers like Danger Danger's Ted Poley and XYZ's Terry Ilous on "Wasting Your Luv" and the title track respectively to the more thrashy, heavier pieces such as "Hell or High Water", featuring Watchtower's Alan Tecchio; and "Crucifaxation" with Anthrax' Neil Turbin, Frost certainly opts for a diverse album. Sadly though, the less than steallar production has totally rendered some of these songs unlistenable -- some of the vocal harmonies barely come through and the rhythm section seems way too buried for my tastes. Frost's playing does not differ that much from his past works, but he's certainly played more melodic solos in his previous bands, most notably Seven Witches. This disc features more of his crunchy rhythm work than his searing, in-your-face heavy guitar leads as well as some ballady material like "Passage to the Classical Side".
Of the eleven songs on this disc, three are covers: Foreigner's "Cold As Ice", sung by the great Jeff Martin, features killer keyboard work by Vox Tempus man Eric Ragno; whilst April Wine's "Sign of the Gypsy Queen" is treated to a cool melodic solo. On the 38 Special track "Hold On Loosely", Jack Frost does the lead vocals himself, but honestly, he is not that great a singer in my opinion. That said, the album features a great list of bass players with Symphony X's Mike LePond, Fates Warning's Joey Vera, and WASP's Mike Duda.
Only recommended to die-hard Frost fans. Otherwise, approach at your own risk because Jack Frost has released much better albums. Also, maybe he could a little break from releasing so many albums in so little time, and focus harder on stronger songwriting.

This is one of the best bands in the Dallas area. James Buck is a master showman with a golden voice. Brent Reed is one of the greatest gutiar players in the Dallas area, and there are quite a few. Tim neely is a smooth on the bass as Stanely Clark. Phil Long on the drums will always have your foot tapping. Get out to see this band where ever they are. Once you have, you will be back time and time again.
Outstanding "roadhouse rock"! great party CD........1999-01-22

A mix of swing, jazz, and blues, ranging from classic ballads (e.g. "Lover Man"), to uptempo jump-swing ("Kidney Stew Is Fine"), to New Orleans R & B classics ("Rockin' Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flue"), to smooth jazz vocalese ("Centerpiece"), to funky-jazz standards ("Cold Duck Time"). The emphasis is on strong group vocal harmonies and hot instrumental work.

A Quarter Century and Still Kickin' . . ........2003-11-30
I first had the pleasure of listening to BSM during a live pick-up performance in Troy, Montana. I believe it was in December of 1978. It was an unusually cold winter (even by Montana standards) and I don't believe the total population of Troy was more than 100 people at the time. This little bar-room was packed with hundreds of people - some taking turns standing outside - all having braved considerable hardships to attend. It was well worth the effort.
Listening to this album makes me remember why I drove 100 miles to listen in 1978. It peeled the years away and I believe I would still drive 100 miles of frozen road (and go out to start my pickup every 45 minutes) to listen to them again. Nice to hear you, again Floodmaps!
Top of their Genre........2001-01-18
This is a group that has obviously been making music together for a long time. Tight performances on all instruments and the female voices are exquisite. The Mud Flaps are at the top of their genre.
