Great recordings in the Leschetizky tradition.......2003-11-05
This compilation is selected by "Pearl" (Pavilion Records, Ltd.) from 2 volumes of Berlin recordings - Polydor (1928-1934) issued by Danacord 336-337 vol. 1 Chopin and Danacord 338-339 vol. 2 Liszt and encores by Alexander Brailowsky. The 13 selections are taken from the total of 47 works comprising the 4 CD's.
As Alan Vicat states in his excellent notes for this CD, "When one listens dispassionately to the works heard here, one is instantly impressed by their sheer bravura and precision, and yes, glorious sound. In the Chopin G minor Ballade, one is impressed by the rhythmic verve, and absence of distortion in the phrasing to cover up any technical limitations. The Weber is a superb performance; despite its great pace and drive it is always completely always under control until when at the very end there is the slightest blemish - of no consequence. In the Liszt Rhapsody the "gypsy" element is revealed in a way that is often missing in other pianists performances. The Tannhauser is a virtuoso version in the true sense, which to the writer is superior to the vaunted Moiseiwitsch recording, good as this is".
Just as good is the performance of Chopin's Barcorolle in F# minor, Op. 60, and Fantasie-Impromptu, Op. 66 and two Etudes Op. 25, No. 3 and Op. 10, No. 4. The two Scriabin Preludes, first in C# minor and second in D# minor are very much Vladimir Horovitz territory and Brailowsky in his performances proves to be equal to the task. The remaining works on this CD of Scarlatti, Schubert (arranged for piano by Karol Tausig (1841-1871), the most talented of many gifted Franz Liszt (1811-1886) pupils), Mendelsshon, Shumann and Debussy testify once again to the great versatility of Alexander Brailowsky's genius, who was capable of doing justice to all musical styles.
In sum: a great recording of the 20th century and many of them are definitive performances. If you decide to purchase this CD you will never regret it and love it more and more after each listening experience.
