This lovely CD features Renée Fleming singing religious music in an unaffected, lovely manner. Many favorites are here: both the Bach/Gounod and Schubert versions of "Ave Maria," each offered with long breaths and soft tone; "Rejoice Greatly" from Messiah, delivered with virtuosity and gleaming sound, and "He Shall Feed His Flock," also from Messiah, sung in a smooth, laid-back manner. Bits of the Fauré Requiem and Poulenc Gloria are welcome, as is the gorgeous "L'Adieu des Bergers" from L'Enfance du Christ. In the prayer from Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel, Fleming is joined by the splendid Susan Graham, and a version of "Amazing Grace" features Mark O'Connor on violin. Two excerpts from Mozart's Mass in C Minor, pieces by Reger and Franck, and a few surprises round out this devotional CD. --Robert Levine

3 out of 5 stars I hate to be rude, but . . ........2007-05-06

As stated earlier, I hate to be rude. However, Renee Fleming is not one of the greatest singers that I have heard. At many times, it sounds as if she is drunk, sliding into her notes at times. She also has a habit of hitting a note, and then quickly moving up or down for "dramatic effect". I'm sorry, but I just cannot listen to this. I know that everyone has their own opinions, and this is mine.
She is still a beautiful woman, and always will be. I have seen her concerts online, and she ISN'T bad, it's just that she doesn't have what I'm looking for in an opera singer!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-07

I had seen this program on PBS and wanted the CD. Wonderful selection
of music and Renee Fleming's outstanding voice.

4 out of 5 stars Sacred Songs.......2007-01-21

I always look for new presentations of Christmas songs. Rene Flemming did an excellent job in this recording. She has a super voice but sometimes the words of the song get lost in her singing style

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of Fleming's CDs so far.......2006-12-07

There are only two cuts on this CD I tend to flip past (Amazing Grace and the Leonard Bernstein cut), but other than them, I totally love the rest! The cuts in German are divine! I could listen to this CD over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and beautiful.......2006-07-20

I've always loved Renee Fleming's singing and this most recent album is just beautiful in every way. A rich voice, beautiful singing and a devout and magnificent artist. She makes even the most notorious evergreens come to life anew. I enjoyed it very much.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2005-08-30

I recommend this to any art-song lover, and really, anybody at all. Gens does an excellent performance of a great collection of beautiful French songs. Her voice is enjoyable all the way, she has great expression, and a convincing mastery of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars An unexpected glimpse of happiness........2001-07-21

Stendhal wrote that "the sight of anything extremely beautiful, in nature or in art, brings back the memory of what one loves, with the speed of lightning. That is, ... all that is beautiful and sublime in the world takes part in the beauty of what one loves, and this unexpected glimpse of happiness immediately fills the eyes with tears. This is how love of the beautiful and love give each other life." This is what Ms. Gens will do to you when you listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting recital of French Melodies.......2000-07-07

This is a most enjoyable release, all the more so because Veronique Gens, who is generally considered a baroque specialist on the lyric stage, may well be a torch-bearer of the elusive art of the French song in the coming decades. The voice of Gens, which is solid and well-integrated with an alluring dash of vibrancy embedded therein, is eminently suited to the repertoire represented in this new Virgin Classics release. Her secure technique (just a hint of strain in one or two high notes) also renders it possible for her to fine down her voice in the ending of phrases to a charming effect. Being a native French speaker certainly helps, too. Although hers is perhaps not the most strongly-etched of readings, she is able to inflect the text intelligently, and her subtle but heart-felt stresses on particular words not only serve to illuminate the poetic prose, but also meld beautifully with the notes that she sing.

The CD opens with songs by Faure, and while Gens may not possess the charm and naturalness of utterance of Maggie Teyte, whose recordings of Faure's songs are, in the opinion of this reviewer, unsurpassable, she can conjure up the right kind of feeling for every song as no one can. Her tempo for the popular "Apres un reve" is a trifle too laid back. Yet, she conveys to perfection the dream-like quality of the song, as well as the sense of confusion and regret at awakening. Her singing of "Le papillon et la fleur" is delightfully vivid, and her evocation of the feeling of sadness being kept in restraint in "Les berceaux" makes the performance both intimate and touching.

The Debussy group is no less impressive. Despite the innovative idiom in which most of these songs are composed, Gens is able bring them off effortlessly and stylishly. She is in total command whether in the serenity of "Beau soir", the romanticism of "Nuit d'etoiles", the rustic charm of "Fleur des bles", or the harrowing grimness of "Noel des enfants qui n'ont plus de maison", the last one composed when Debussy was being haunted by the atrocities of the Great War. In "Fetes galantes I", although the vocal and piano parts are often independent of each other, Gens's remarkable interpretation succeeds in unifying the two strands into a picturesque and colourful whole. The "3 Chansons de Bilitis", which are composed very much in the style of PELLEAS ET MELISANDE, also find an ideal interpreter in Gens where, blessed with a keen sense of rhythm, she succeeds in propelling the texts forward with musical grace and dramatic import. She would surely make a wonderful Melisande.

The Poulenc is equally fine. The young soprano is able to do full justice to the diverse moods in "Banalites", which, according to Olivier Opdebeeck, who penned the CD notes, is composed in a "part-melancholy, part-joyful tone with a barb of irony which the composer identified in the poet". The "2 Melodies de Guillaume Apollinaire" are sharply contrasted, one (Montparnasse) languid and brooding and the other (Hyde Park) gusty and piquant. Gens's singing of "Les chemins de l'amour", a cross between a Viennese waltz and a cabaret song, is loveliness itself and provides a delicious end to an enchanting recital.

The major reservation that this reviewer has involves the accompaniment of Roger Vignoles. While he is able to provide secure support for the singer, his playing is uncharacterful and even bland. Besides, the piano tone seems to be rather thin at times. Nonetheless, this should not detract one from the sensuous beauty of Gens's performance. This reviewer hopes that Virgin Classics would be encouraged by the success of this release so that they can present this most promising singer in further volumes of French songs by, say, Chausson, Ravel and Duparc.

5 out of 5 stars Nuit d'toiles - Melodies Francaises/ Gens, Vignoles.......2000-06-13

Not being a professional, but loving the genre of French melodies I'll avoid technical commentary; I have become a collector of these in recent years and find this one extremely satifying and appreciate the variety this CD presents.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Vocal Performance.......2000-05-01

This ranks as one of the very best recordings of French 'melodies' that I have yet heard. Unlike most other singers, Gens gives the words drama and meaning. Too many singers perform these works in a detached 'artistic' manner that often makes them all sound almost alike. I say this not to belittle Gens' voice (which is superb), but to indicate that this disk will take you beyond the 'standard' interpretations of these works. I had a chance to compare one of the melodies with another recent recording by Schafer, another singer whom I respect Both were being featured in a local record store. It was hard to realize they were actually singing the same piece. I recently saw Gens perform much of the same program at a recital in NYC. This was the best recital I had heard in a very long time (I go to many). The disk is almost as good. It suffers a bit from a very unnatural recorded sound: the microphone is much too close to the singer and the piano is much too forward. Also the accompaniest in NYC was clearly better. Nevertheless, it would be hard to find a better recorded performance. The more I listen to the disk, the less I notice these drawbacks. The choice of repetoire is also well done. I particularly liked the Debussy 'Trois chansons de Bilitis.' She ends with 'Les chemins de l'amour' which Poulenc wrote for Jean Anouilh's play 'Leaocadia'. This has become very popular outside the normal recital circuit. If you get only one disk of French melodies, this is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Sensuality Personified!.......2005-04-27

This is one of the best collections of Regine Crespin. Of course, her Berlioz/Ravel set with Ansermet is definitive, but the beauty and soft womanliness of her voice can be heard in all the selections on this disc. The engineers went for her vocal best and they created a fine collection aptly titled "The Best of..." One would be unduly captious to find Crespin "brittle" of tone here.

It is by now, very difficult to imagine anyone singing "Il est doux" with more apt expression of the line than La Crespin. Wagner's Wesendonk lieder is simply sublime from start to finish and the Faure takes on new meaning. That she is comical, melancholy, fun and happy by turns singles her out. This collection captures all her awesome talent. Underneath it all seems to be a very, if I may, sexual energy.

Crespin must be heard to be believed and the miracle lies in that even her softest tones are really enveloping, never thin. All tones are open and this is why there are enough colors in Regine Crespin's delicious voice to paint the world a thousand times, but it may also be why she infamous for being short and edgy on top but I remind, never here is she such. She is a relaxed singer in superb voice, comfortable in her own olive skin and makes the most out of every word those poets wrote.

The whole collection is unique in pace, style, and voice. It is Regine Crespin...in a nutshell fabulous!

5 out of 5 stars The best Jazz - Record I have ever heard.......2006-03-20

The romantic French Music of Poulenc, Satie, Debussy, Fauré and Ravel is one of the most important roots of Jazz Music. The different and smooth-changing colours of sounds are very next to the Jazz improvisations and harmonizations. Fred Hersch is one of the best contemporary Jazz-pianists and he perfectly mangages it to perform inspiring "New American interpretations of older French Music", as this CD could be subtitled.

The titles on the CD are sometimes a bit melancholic, mostly introspective, but sometimes there are valses and ballades as if you could dance to it. There is an extraordinary spectrum of moods and intelligent interpretations. Some of the pieces of music are performed with the outstanding Toots Thilemans on the harmonica - an instrument which perfectly fits to the "French atmosphere". The contributions of Eddie Daniels (clarinet), Kevin Eubanks (guitar) and James Newton (flute) are gorgeous as well.

All titles can be rated with five stars. There is definitely no "poor title" among them. The classical character of the pieces of music is respected at any time.

I heared this CD first in June 1989 (even before it has been released in June 1990) on Willis Conover's "House of sounds" on the Voice of America (VoA Europe). I have been searching for this CD (which has not been avaible in any CD-shop in Europe) for more than 15 years, only owning a cassette tape of the VoA-broadcast. As a Jazz-fan I am glad to have been finding it at amazon.com in 2005. I am astonished that there is only a secondary market for this excellent CD.

My recommendation: "Strong Buy". "The French Collection" is even better than the Fred Hersch CD "Jazz Impressions of Russian Composers", released on the label EMI USA (Series "Red Square Blue").

5 out of 5 stars THE BARBER IS OUT OF THIS WORLD.......2007-05-20

Worth getting for the Barber. A terrific piece of music, in my opinion much more worth hearing than still another Beethoven sonata.

Superb playing by Horowitz! The fugue, oh my! He kills! That's why he was Horowitz!

The other pieces are fine even though Prokofiev's 7th is by now a little passe.

But the Barber is not and sounds as fresh as if this was 1950!

    Get it!

4 out of 5 stars The Mad Barber.......2005-12-09

I last listened to this CD years ago, and now that I'm working on the Barber sonata myself, I checked it out of the library again after spending some time alone with the piece. Now that I'm listening to it with new ears, I was shocked at how different it was from how I remembered it! It's a great performance which can be a little bit too hard-edged at times.

The pianistic exactitude displayed in the first movement is absolutely authoritative. The tempo is correct and rock-solid (without being mechanical), the dynamic contrasts are all beautifully executed, and there is no romanticizing of this very modern score. I went back and listened to Olga Kern's Cliburn CD again, and I was surprised to hear all kinds of misreadings I missed when I heard her play in San Jose - so many rhythms which are scrambled, so many dynamics steamrolled over, so many wrong articulations. But Horowitz is extremely precise, especially for his time - I had never appreciated how astute he was.

That goes for all the rest of the movements, too. The scherzo is not as colorful as some other readings I've heard, but it suits the starker overall conception. Horowitz's staccato is phenomonal, too. The slow movement is a bit bumpy, but it is certainly expressive, without being indulgent or overdone. I've heard it played so affectionately that it inflated the entire sonata like a balloon - that's not what Barber was going for.

Finally, the fugue. It's tremendous, and it's earthshaking - a performance meant to ring every ear in La Scala - and Horowitz's legendary finger independence is on full display here. The tempo is fairly moderate, but it feels fast - that is the Horowitz magic at work. A slip right at the end, in the 5 against 2 section, is the only tiny error in the entire diabolical movement. What I would have liked a little more of is a jazzy feeling - more like Browning, in other words. This is American music, and it has a certain swing to it which can be tremendously effective. Horowitz is deadly serious and granitic - no room for rhythmic or agogic liberties. But that's a minor complaint. This remains, pound for pound, the best recording I've heard - though not quite ideal.

There's a lot to learn, and a lot to enjoy in this performance.

5 out of 5 stars Pure, Unadulterated Horowitz..........2003-07-07

This recording makes it clear why Horowitz is so often referred to as "king of the piano". His staggering technique is more than evident, and his seemingly limitless tonal palette is constantly in effect. The Barber Sonata is a most electrifying experience, especially in the insanely virtuosic fugue, and definitely the best on record. The Prokofiev Sonata has more rivals (Richter, Argerich, Pollini, etc.), and to no one's surprise, it stands with the best. The last movement may not be as exciting as Argerich's version, but on the whole, the performance is top-notch. The Toccata is taken in a record four minutes flat, but does anyone notice that Horowitz makes a cut several pages from the end? Still, this account in one of the most stunning on record (the only real competition coming from Argerich on her debut CD). It is interesting how Horowitz slows down the tempi in certain sections to prepare for more heart-stopping climaxes. The rest of the CD is also enjoyable, but it is composed of less well-known repertoire such as a Kabalevsky Sonata and a short Poulenc piece. This CD is strongly recommended, at least until some one of Horowitz's abilities decides to record the Barber Sonata (I'm still waiting for an artist like Argerich or Pollini to come around).

    5 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......1999-06-24

I just want to support the rewiever from Marsch 27th 1999. I personally have three copies: one at home, one in a safetybox at the bank and one at my girlfriends house (just to be sure if anything should go wrong) and I ceep them all in vacum and in steel boxes (the temperature always beetween 19,2°C-19,5°C).

This should tell you what I think of this recording. I tried to rate it six stars but the computer didn't except that. Well...

5 out of 5 stars Get this CD. Be amazed. Tell a friend........1999-03-28

This is a desert island disc if ever there was one.

Let's get skip ahead and talk about the Toccata. This piece can only be described in roller-coaster terms. For 4'00" you will experience every conceivable twist and turn, the music will only slow down to gather momentum (like when you are slowly hoisted up on a bungee cord just to get ready for a free fall). Exhilerating!

Don't think for a minute that we would skip over Prokofiev's 7th Sonata. The first movement has enough material to last for hours. Only someone like Prokofiev, with his limitless supply of fresh material, could rapidly shift between themes without milking them for all they are worth. The 2nd movement could be described as haunting, lyrical, mysterious, and chilling. The 3rd movement is a pure show of brute force. This is the kind of music that annoys the neighbors, unless they have exceptional musical taste.

The Barber Sonata bursts on to the scene with a brash into. Nothing on this CD is ordinary, especially not when played by the king of the piano.

    3 out of 5 stars Rum-Rum.......2007-03-14

Any review of this recording that fails to mention the distracting background noise makes one wonder how closely the reviewer was listening. Throughout the Duruflé Requiem, there is a consistent noise that sounds like a needle stuck in a grove at the end of an old LP: "rum-rum, rum-rum, rum-rum..." While it is possible one might not hear it played back through speakers, it is impossible to miss through headphones.

As to the performance, I prefer the austere sound of the organ against the ethereal sounds of the chorus. My only reservation lies with the boy tremble, whose vocal output is unsteady, almost nervous sounding, as though he were being forced to sing. I don't think an idea performance with organ accompaniment exists, but this performance comes as close as any I have heard.

    4 out of 5 stars Rumble rumble.......2006-10-15

I just got this CD a few weeks ago because I wanted both the Faure and the Durufle. I'm not going to pick on anybody for supposed intonation problems (I listen to Bob Dylan and Ryan Adams regularly) or anything else. I really like the recordings of every piece I've heard on this CD set.

But has anybody else noticed some pretty major traffic noises during the Durufle Quatre Motets, specificall track 11? It sounds like they recorded next to a race track.

Outside of that, I think this set is a worthwhile investment.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime versions and top class recordings........2006-09-03

This version of Durufle's Requiem is just mesmerizing, I have the Telarc, which is great... until you listen to this one.
Sound quality is top notch too for a seventies recording.

    2 out of 5 stars Deceptive Durufle.......2003-11-27

If one were to listen solely to the Faure Requiem and some of the other choral works on this 2 CD compilation, this would be a decent recording of great French choral music. However, as someone looking for a good recording of the Durufle, I was highly disappointed. Not only is the recording simply an organ reduction of full score, but the quality of singing was below what one would expect to find on a CD from a major label. Marked by under-developed techniques and inconsistencies in pitch, the recording is good if you need to learn the work in a hurry, but little else. If you're in the market for a Faure recording, this will do the job and you can preview the Durufle, but look elsewhere for a serious recording of such a rich work.

5 out of 5 stars Duruflés Requiem and original intentions........2003-02-02

Both Duruflé and Fauré wrote their Requiems for choir and organ first. The orchestrations were afterthoughts bending to the excesses of public appeal and publishers demands. Both works can be wonderful with orchestra and on this CD you will find, as usual with St. Martin in the Fields, a beautiful recording of the Fauré Requem with orchestra. However, on this CD you will find the Duruflé Requiem in the original choir and organ only version, and this, in my opinion, is not only the preferable way to listen to the work - in it's original casting, but this performance is the best around with a most lush and complex tone from the trebles in the boy choir.

4 out of 5 stars Remember Earl Wild...?.......2005-08-02

Sometimes it takes a while before a man becomes a legend. With the rebirth of appreciation for the "Romantic pianists" (pianists who took great liberties with scores when the composer was in the tradition of such changes in his lifetime - like Liszt, etc) comes a renewed appreciation for the piano mastery of Earl Wild. Somehow always under the shadow of his contemporaries such as Rubinstein, Horowitz, Serkin, et al, Wild had a strong following among a few orchestras and devoted recital attendees. But in his lifetime his popularity waned when he began emphasizing his own 'transcriptions'.

Well, now with the release of this never less than interesting CD the artistry of Earl Wild is bound to gain a new applauding audience. These pieces are his own transcriptions of well known works by composers such as Saint-Saens, Handel, Rachmaninov, Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Kreisler, and some of his own 'homages' to Faure and Poulenc. The playing is incandescently romantic: for sheer exhilaration of excitement these transcriptions are inimitable. The only other album to some close to this is Wild playing Liszt's transcriptions of operas!

This is a well-produced and very fun album for any mood. And it just may well be the kind of entry to the big works that young people need! Grady Harp, August 05

As a pianist myself, I truly appreciated this cd. Wild is a genius! I especially loved "Reminiscenes of Snow White". I'm positively dying to get my hands on the score of it!!!! Very well done!!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Soothing Compilation .......2006-04-05

This is a wonderful collection of extracts from other Telarc recordings of works by French composers. It serves as a compilation and a sampler that may well lead you to buying several of the other Telarc CDs from which these selections were taken. The digital sound, as usual with Telarc, is brilliantly clear without being harsh, brash, or loud. The dynamics are perfect, without any of the problems one sometimes encounters in compilations, of shifting sound levels. Finally, the performances are pristine and filled with wondrous beauty.

Each selection is soothing without being soporific. In fact, as relaxing as this collection is, instead of putting me to sleep it actually made me feel more alert as I listened to it, because of the excellent quality of the performances and the clarity of the recorded sound.

The only difficulty I have in evaluating this compilation is choosing a favorite selection, or even two or three favorites out of the fifteen on this disc. They're all wonderful, from the orchestral arrangements of Faure and Satie, conducted by Leonard Slatkin, to the selections of Debussy performed on harp by Yolanda Kondonassis, to Faure's Prelude and Sicilienne (from Pelleas et Melisande) conducted by one of the greatest choral conductors of the twentieth century, Robert Shaw. Five of the fifteen tracks, fully one third, are selections from works composed by Gabriel Faure (1845 - 1924), a pupil of Saint-Saens and an underappreciated composer in the United States. Hopefully, this disc will help to contribute to a better appreciation of one of the most gifted and original French 19th composers in the generation before Debussy (who actually outlived Debussy by six years).

From beginning to end, this is an excellent disc. Recommended with pleasure.

    5 out of 5 stars Parent's blessing!.......2004-01-02

I have two of these cd's. My kids are 2 and 4 and I bought the first cd when my daughter was a newborn. These have been a true blessing and most evenings, put ME to sleep along with my daughter as I'm getting her settled and to sleep. SOO soothing and relaxing.......just beautiful. The original cd had gotten a scratch on one song so I'm here on Amazon trying to buy yet another one. Great just to play when the kids are wound up just to sooth them.

    5 out of 5 stars A Real Snooze..........2002-10-24

This compilation of songs is most restful for both the young and old. I received this CD as a gift years before the birth of my daughter and I used it's calming effect while studying calculus.

While working in a daycare this CD had twenty 3-5 year old children fast asleep within minutes. Very cool!

I just purchased a new copy of this CD as the old one is scratched and worn out. I now look forward to sharing this soothing music with my newborn baby girl. ****I highly recommend this CD for putting your little one to sleep.****

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL - if only it was available.......2002-08-19

As a highly active amateur cellist, this is my signature baby gift to all friends and family - all have commented at it's soothing effect when played at naptime or bedtime. This is a wonderful collection, well-played - BUT IT'S NEVER AVAILABLE. I'm now on a constant search to find used copies. I can only hope that they get back on the ball and restart production on this CD - so that all of you can enjoy it!!

5 out of 5 stars Get two so you can give one as a gift..........2001-11-07

This CD is made up of instrumental cello renditions of popular lullabyes.

My wife and I have given several of these CD's to parents of young children in the US and abroad. Without exception, the soothing cello tunes help mother and child alike to relax at the end of a busy day.

Webber performs sensitive interpretations of these long-beloved classics, including Braham's Lullabye and Rock a Bye Baby. The cuts provide wonderful comfort to a stressed world. My wife and I listen happily while reading and sitting in front of the crackling fire.

We love this album and are ordering 6 so we have some on hand for gifts to new mothers.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully performed soothing, calming music.......1999-03-19

Julian Webber performs masterfully in this relaxing collection of peaceful lullabies. His technique is superb, and this CD will leave you snoring soundly if you play it at night, like I do.
