This is an amazing CD. I recommend it highly for reading on a rainy day, relaxing, or just reading the paper on a Sunday morning. It's one of my top 10 relaxation CDs.

Great CD all around!.......2005-08-30

I got this CD because I am a massage therapist,and refuse to buy
those cheesey new agey relaxation CD's.I was finally getting a little tired of the bach cello concertos and a couple of other classical recordings that had been deemed "relaxing",and decided to try this one.It is great!I never seem to get tired of it!I have not had a client that didn't love it.Most even ask what it is because they like it so much.Based on the success of this CD,I am going to try the Cello For Relaxation CD in the same series.I hope that it is just as much of a hit!

Wonderfully relaxing!.......2005-05-09

This CD definitely lives up to it's name. Julian Bream's guitar playing is ethereal and leaves your mind in a state of blissful relaxation...A wonderful collection! Well worth the investment!

Very Relaxing, Highly Recommended!.......2005-05-03

I find myself choosing this CD whenever I want to unwind. It is absolutely exquisite. I have bought quite a few different "relaxation" CD's, and this is my favorite.

Has hard-to-find pieces by Bream.......2003-02-20

Despite a title sure to embarrass any self-respecting music snob, this is no less than a full disc of nicely mastered solo guitar recordings by the great Julian Bream (a string quartet joins Bream on one track). If these pieces could be easily found elsewhere, on albums with more continuity, then this disc wouldn't be worth buying. But probably 40% of the material on this cd can't be found in print, to my knowledge. In particular, the Mompou, Mozart, Llobet, Aguado, Henze, and Diabelli tracks aren't readily available elsewhere as of early 2003. Several of these tracks are nice hefty 6-7 minute pieces. In particular, the beautiful Andante from Diabelli's Sonata, arranged by Bream himself, is worth the purchase price by itself. If you're a Bream fan trying to get beyond his half-dozen easily available cds, add this to your collection.

A new way to look at Spanish music from a true artist.......2003-05-05

The Albeniz sonata (opens Disc One) sounds amazingly like Bach, yet nothing like Bach, in de Larrocha's hands. Somehow, she brings the meditative astringency of Bach to this Spanish music. No wild fandangos and flashy dancing, this is a very cerebral interpretation of a composer who perhaps would not be so well known if it weren't for de Larrocha's lifelong championing of Spanish composers.

Joy of joy, she also includes the rarely-heard Cansons i Dansas of Federico Monpou, a composer who has a lot in common with Satie and Poulenc, but is not so well-known. But if you like Star Trek films, you may have heard one of these CD cuts already: de Larrocha is playing Canson #6 in one scene in "Star Trek: Nemesis."

De Larrocha has indicated she will retire from concertizing and spend her time re-editing Granados. While we lose a marvelous virtuoso on the stage, I am sure we will gain new insight into another Spanish composer. Meanwhile, this set in the rich Pianists of the Twentieth Century is getting to be one of my favorites. I just love it.

When we approach the piano-sourced "poems" of Albeniz such as Iberia and Suites Espanolas it is worth remembering that no less a listener than Olivier Messiaen deemed them worthy of a place beside the "Sonatas of Beethoven and the Well Tempered Clavier of Bach." He wrote this in the liner notes of Iberia as played by the estimable pianist Yvonne Loriod (his wife). But it is Alicia de Larrocha, I believe, who best reveals through her potent artistry the stunning sonic depths of the chords, rhythyms and runs, the full tonal tour of that magic country that is the cross-roads of two continents, Europe and Africa. With breathless enchantment throughout works like "Almeria" a different soul shines out than what we're used to in more Northern music, something that would be wrongly called sensual if only that that would be a misunderstanding of the great spirituality that lies deep within these works, a sort of sleeping fire that Ms. de Larrocha ceaselessly coaxes out with her quicksilver technique. All her playing of the Spanish masters, without exception, speaks of this spirit deep within. Peerless performances of this repertoire.

Exceptional performances of less than standard repetoire.......1999-02-24

With its Great Pianists of the Twentieth Century, Philips has provided the classical piano fan with an embarrassment of riches. For those who are like me and lack the time and budget to splurge for all 100 volumes, a choice has to be made as to how to select which of the hours of music best merits purchase. There are no doubt many possible ways to select choices, but it seems to come down to whether you want to select your discs by a particular artist or select particular repetoire. While this series seems inclined to promote choosing by artist, this approach may provide a listener with multiple renditions of the same Chopin, Rachmaninov, or Brahms. One artist who merits selection by dint of her repetoire and her celebrity is Alicia DeLarrocha. This disc features Spanish classical music exclusively and is a wonder. DeLarrocha's clear articulation, sharp accents, and dry, singing lines lead the listener to approximately 2.5 hours of magic. For those who think Spanish music is solely flamenco strumming, the depth and variety of this disc will be an eye and ear opener. For choosy consumers and epicures alike, this disc is a winner.

Rubinstein's Love Affair with Spain.......2006-09-06

Arthur Rubinstein was from the earliest days of his long fabled career a proponent of the music of Spain. Whether in that extraordinary follow-up to the protean display pieces of Liszt, Albeniz's Iberia, or the memorable lyrical passages of the ill-fated Granados, Rubinstein's way with this music stood out in that bygone era of legendary virtuosi. (Of note - Granados tragically was killed trying in vain to rescue his wife following a U-boat attack on their return to Barcelona following the succesful 1916 Met premiere of his opera Goyescas. His success was so great in America he even played at the White House for President Wilson. The CD has one selection from Goyescas, the famous "The Maiden and the Nightingale" in a wonderfully evocative performance by Rubinstein.)
At the same time as the Goyescas' Met premiere the young Artur Rubinstein was traveling across the breadth of the Iberian peninsula, giving over a hundred concerts between 1916 and 1917. Rubinstein became friends with the Albeniz family. (The composer had died in 1909.) He became a huge public favorite and was feted far and wide in Spain, including by the Spanish Royal family. Throughout his life he kept a home in Spain in that extraodinary Costa del Sol cityscape that is Marbella. Rubinstein's appreciation for Spain and Spanish music was unparalled among any other non-Spanish performers of the last century.
This selection was made according to the back cover between 1947 and 1955, but actually, as one reviewer correctly noted, the earliest recording, Navarra from Iberia, was made earlier, in June of 1941. The remainder are from 1947 or later. The performance of the delightful Spanish piano concerto, De Falla's Noches en los Jardins de Espana, captures Rubinstein at the peak of his career - his later stereo performance lacks the froth, sparkle and genuine magic given off in this version. The piano sounds wonderful and has been superbly restored in this issue. The only downside to this CD is that it represents most of the Spanish music Rubinstein recorded.
If you thought Rubinstein simply meant Chopin then this CD will certainly be a revelation. Some of the greatest Spanish piano music played by one of its greatest interpretators. Highest possible recomendation!
P.S. When a customer searches for this title why does Amazon insist on listing an old no longer available CD of this RCA CD and not this much more recent and in stock remastering? This version has a drawing of Rubinstein by Picasso.

Rubinstein Topples de Larrocha.......2001-02-10

Dear Readers, Rubinstein does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with de Larrocha. The fact is that he "LOVED" Spanish music and de Larrocha made her career on it. It's very beautiful what she does, but Rubinstein goes to the heart everytime. You'll get a glimpse of this if you compare the two. They are in very different zones.

Rubinstein "Speaks" Spanish Without an Accent.......2001-01-02

After Alicia De Larrocha, Arthur Rubinstein was the 20th century's greatest exponent of Spanish piano music. On his first tour of Spain, in 1915, the Polish pianist fell in love with the country--its food, wine, women, and music. The love was mutual. Spain took Rubinstein to heart and became friends with some of the composers featured on this CD. Critical reactions to Rubinstein's performances of Spanish music were ecstatic--many musicians remakring that he played Spanish music "without an accent," i.e., like a born Spaniard.

The performances on this CD were recorded from 1941-1955. Every track on this disc demonstrates what the critics in Spain were writing at the time, Rubinstein had a natural feel for this repertoire that defies born nationality. Particularly effective are the Albeniz and Falla selections.

It is a pity that Rubinstein was not persuaded to re-record all of these works in stereo (there are stereo versions of Falla's Fire Dance, Nights in the Gardens of Spain, and Albeniz' Navarra), as there are those closed-minded individuals who will refuse to buy this CD simply because the recordings featured on it are monaural. The loss is theirs.

great compilation to relax to.......2005-04-18

good relaxing compilations of classical piano music abound, but eckart rahn has upped the ante with this one. you not only get excellent performances of such standards as claire de lune, but a whole second disk with pieces from scriabin, messaien, milhaud and others who have been sorely neglected. this is one well-done job of selection, and there's nothing else out there quite like it. you won't be dissapointed if you're a piano music buff!

I bought this for the recipes so the CD was an added bonus. Still, I assumed that it would be tinsel-sounding cheesy pseudo-flamingo music. One day I decided to listen and WOW - what a brilliant collection, almost quintesentially Spanish. From the supple Prelude to the incredible Asturias this is a tour de force of Spanish guitar and the almost magical playing that is associated with that genre.

The best way to listen is with either Bose speakers set at stereo or (even better) with head phones. All the nuances, slides, plucks, intricate fingering - the entire spirit of the wrok - can be captured in this manner.I tried it both ways and even with the Bose must admit that headphones provided a depth of detail that made it seem as if I was on stage with the performer. I see that Mr. Teicholz also has several Sors albums - my very next purchases.

Spanish guitar music at its best.......2005-02-21

To clarify: the primary artist here is the guitarist Marc Teicholz, who is joined on 'cello by Ms O'Connor for pieces 11-13. "La vida breve" (apparently double-tracked) is in fact the famous "Spanish Dance No. 1", not the entire opera. The Mompou piece is from the "Suite Compostelana", recorded in its entirety by Segovia and others. There is only one Catalan folk song.

My attention was initially drawn to this CD by its inclusion of Halffter's "Danza de la Pastora"; I saw Narciso Yepes play this many years ago, but he never recorded it, and I've been searching for a good recording ever since.

Marc Teicholz is a winner of the Guitar Foundation of America competition, and this album show clearly why. My girlfriend -- a musician but not particularly a fan of classical guitar, although exposed to it by long association with me -- exclaimed "My God, he's terrific! He's got everything!"

And indeed he has. The pieces here range from fairly easy to fiendish, but Mr Teicholz negotiates them all with equally effortless authority and beautiful tone. The well-known "Asturias", which some prefer to start quietly and build up, is treated here more like a flamenco piece (which indeed it may be regarded as, being based on a Granadina); the notorious "big chord", which causes so many guitarists to falter, is played with rock-solid rhythm, as is everything else. Likewise, I have never heard the Turina pieces played with greater command; but lyricism seems to come just as easily, as in the beautiful "Capricho Catalán".

There are many young guitarists today with excellent technique. What separates Mr Teicholz from the herd is his musicality. His version of "Danza de la Pastora" is much more exciting than that of Messrs Parkening & Brandon, even though they have twice as many guitars; furthermore, he observes all the repeats, which they do not. In fact, this piece alone would be worth the price of the CD to me.

But even ignoring that, this is a thoroughly worthwhile album, even if you already have some of the familiar pieces: the guitar and 'cello transcriptions work extremely well, all the music is accessible to the average listener, and the recording is excellent.
