Customer Reviews:
I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11
This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.
I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.
"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.
MarMSED.......2005-08-27
The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.
Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24
Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.
The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.
Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.
Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

clearing up a discrepancy.......2005-12-20
The play list is correct, the one with the ability to listen to clips. This CD has 14 tracks, beginning with "Puer natus est nobis" (the Introit) and ending with "Magnificat anima mea Dominum." The list that says ON THIS CD is a totally different list of chants. I do not know what it is doing on this page.
There is no Mozart. There are sparse credits in the liner notes. The recording appears to be of a group calling itself Capella Gregoriana, although nothing is said about them. Predominantly chant, there are times when the selections move to motets, the natural outgrowth of chant, being simutaneous independent plain songs as it were, combined to form a melodious and rhythmic whole much as partner songs do. Highly recommended, this is an excellent budget album. Just be sure that you understand that you are getting the 14 tracks that you can listen to, not the list that says other tracks are on the CD. As for the Christmas feel, it is certainly reverent and soothing. It is not festive. If you like chant, you will appreciate this album. I certainly do. If you are looking for festive type Christmas music, find another source.
One of the best I've heard.......2004-03-09
Not technically Gregorian, because of some polyphony. But this is one of the best selections of this kind of music that I've heard. Compare to expensive monastery or convert CDs, and others, and this is one you put on the CD changer more than the rest. Found it in a bargain bin at Fry's. Amazing CD.
Beautiful music.......2002-12-29
Beautiful musical rendition of Christmas music. Soothing and lilting, it'll help you get centered or reconnected or whatever it is you need for stress relief. A fantastic CD at a great price!
Do the holidays get you stressed?.......2000-12-05
This is a beautiful collection of soothing Christmas chants and motets...Put this in your CD player and you'll have trouble getting upset about the person who just cut you off for the last parking space at the mall! An excellent-quality recording for an amazing price...
Who record this? Capella Gregoriana?.......2000-09-01
There is an interesting descrepancy in who recorded these - the listing says: "Performed by Schola Hungarica Conducted by László Dobszay" while the cd itself simply says "Capella Gregoriana". I suspect the listing is more accurate given the overall quality of this recording. Other than a phrase in Procedentem Sponsum where I find the high notes to be less than ideal, the recording has voices clearly used to chant with careful unisons that keeps the words understandable. The first cut Dies est laetitia is my favorite. This is definately an acceptable album of traditional Christmas music - very traditional.

Customer Reviews:
Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30
Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.
Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.
A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24
Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-17
"On December 9, 1531, the indian neophyte Juan Diego was lured to mount tepeyas by the sound of stunning music. He made his way to the top, where the Virgin of guadalupe appeared to him in radiant splendor. In 1764, Ignacio de Jerusalem, chapel master of mexico city cathedral, composed his matins for the Virgin of Guadalupe. In 1997, this work, which had not been heard for almost two centuries, was performed and recorded by Chanticleer".
During Jerusalem's lifetime (1707-1769), while aspiring composers in Italy were writing operas, their Latin American counterparts were foucused on the writing of Matins, a Roman Catholic service traditionaly performed in the early morning. It provided a plethora of opportunities to display compositional skills using a wide variety of textures and styles. After the Invitatory and Hymn, the service continued with three Nocturns-equivalent in magnitude to an act in an opera- that were constructed of monophonic Psalms in chant, intoned lessons that could preach a story, and sets of Responsories that combined voices with instruments. The final Responsory was frequently replaced by an extended setting of the Te Deum, which could bring the Matin service to a close. In fact Jerusalem's Te Deum was so popular at the time that the Cathedral Librarian complained that the parts were "badly worn"
The remaining work on this disc are by Jerusalem's predecessor-the brilliant Manuel de Sumaya(1678-1755).
There is no doubt that this is an extremely attractive set of pieces with solos, duets, trios, quartets and of course, full chorus. The voices of Chanticleer make quality sounds and sing all of this with great vigor and enthusiasm. When I first acquired this CD I listened to it constantly because it was 'different' and 'easy' to do so. However, I have to say, that like Broadway tunes, one must take a 'break' from them from time to time. Whereas when I listen to Palestrina or Byrd etc. there is never any 'saturation'. However, having said all of this, I would not want to do without having this in my listening library.
Chanticleer is a full-time classical vocal ensemble in the United States, and we're proud to own them, for just like their British counterpoints, the King Singers, perfection is their name. They sing from Renaissance to Jazz, and do it all very well indeed!!! Their name, by the way, was taken from the 'clear singing' rooster in Chaucer's Canterbury tales. The personnel changes from time to time so I'm going to list who they are on this disc because I like to know to whom I'm listening: Christopher Fritzsche,Corey McKnight,Jay White are Sopranos; Kenneth Fitch,Michael Lichtenaur,Philip Wilder are altos; Kevin Baum, Tim Krol,David Munderlich are tenors; Eric Alatorre, Frank Albinder,Chad Runyon are baritones and basses. This disc was made in July,1977.
Sounds like everyone, but uniquely himself. . ........2005-02-11
Jerusalem's music sounds like Handel sometimes, like Bach sometimes, like Vivaldi sometimes, like Haydn sometimes, and a few times even anticipates Beethoven--but his is almost always himself. For a man who spent most of his career at the edge of the 'civilized' world, he was remarkably up-to-date. He has produced a unique contribution to Western art music.
The performance also is excellent. I can't flaw what has been done here. I would like to see some other groups, however, tackle it--if only for comparison's sake.
Wonderful music.......2001-10-10
This recording, is a five stars in all aspects, I am
sure that many European baroque composers wish they
could of have sign their names, on the original manuscript
of this work. This recording, and the music are so
good, that it leaves me little to say or write...
A Great Musical Discovery!.......2000-10-05
The Maitines para Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, by Ignacio de Jerusalém, receives on this recording its first performance since two hundred years ago. Music lovers must be very thankful to Chanticleer for their interest in reviving works from the Mexican Baroque. Matins (a religious service that was performed in the Roman Catholic Church in the early hours of the morning)were a vehicle for composers in the New Spain to showcase their skill using texts of different moods. These Matins in particular, for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, bear ressemblance to the early Catholic works by Handel, where a capella chant was alternated with elaborate solo and choral movements with orchestra. Jerusalem, an Italian composer established in Mexico by 1742, borrowed music from other composers for his services: Beatam me dicent omnes is by Giacomo Rust and there are two wonderful works by Manuel de Sumaya. These two pieces, "Albricias mortales" and "Angélicas milicias" are in my opinion, the most interesting works of the CD. With their poetic Spanish texts and baroque polyphony, they illustrate the situation of Latin America during that period: great European influence with a new conscience of being part of another new reality, something similar to the literary work of the great Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. The choral and orchestral forces of Chanticleer perform with such beauty and expression that it is difficult that even Jerusalem could have imagined that this work could sound so great. I hope Chanticleer continue to revive great works from Latin America.
Beautiful...definitely a masterpiece.......2000-02-13
I bought this CD a while ago, but I still listen to it frequently. The singing is impeccable. They sing beautifully in the Baroque style, the voices in the unison chants blend like they are one, and the contertenors are angelic. One thing that I especially like is the fact that they do an entire Matins service, and that is actually cohesive. One can clearly picture this being sung at a Matins service two centuries ago. Overall, this is truly a moving musical experience.

This sampler, which appeared in 1997, features Robert Shaw, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and its associated choruses in selections from some of the choral-orchestral blockbusters they recorded for Telarc between 1979 and 1993, in consistently excellent sound. Shaw's unrivalled mastery of this repertory shines through in every selection on the disc, not least in the excerpts that frame the program: the final pages of the "Prologue in Heaven" from Boito's Mefistofele, and the towering conclusion of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, both magnificently done. Just one warning: after listening to this, you're likely to find yourself hurrying back to buy the recordings of the complete works. --Ted Libbey

One Who Loved Sir Robert; eager to see him again .......2006-06-30
If anyone goes back into that memory of nostalgia...It is easy to create good reminders of seeing, hearing and singing with Sir Robert Conducting JS Bach, Berlioz, Brahms, Mozart, Poulenc, Schubert and Vivaldi!
When anyone hears once again Donna Carter, Edith Wiens, Judith Blegen, Susan Dunn, Christine Brewer, Dawn Upshaw and William Stone it is a totally unforgetable Moment! Upon more keenly intense listening I found similarities in the voices of Edith Wiens...Judith Blegen and Donna Carter. In fact, I can exchange the songs of Donna, Edith and Judith without being sure of which is the right soprano. That is almost equal to the voice of Susan Dunn! The last two Sopranos, Christine Brewer and Dawn Upshaw are different qualities with a bit more variety of color and depth! Shaw had a masterful taste in choosing the right soprano for each demand and challenge!
When one dwells upon Shaw Favorites with CD's of "Deep River & other SPIRITUALS, Christmas with Robert Shaw, surely, CHORAL MASTERPIECES and Johannes Brahms GERMAN REQUIEM...what else is THERE?
No other Choral Inflence has been seen greater than upon Donald Neuen, Craig Jessop or Norman MacKenzie! SING-Cerely, "Revi" Fred W Hood
I may be musically challanged but...........2002-10-23
This is one of those recordings that would have a hole worn in it from overuse if CD's were capable of getting holes from being used. This is the most used CD in my entire collection. I love it! It picks me up when I am down and it quiets me when I am high. It send shivers down my spine and sets my heart pounding. In short, it does everything a good CD is supposed to do. I don't want to listen to an hour of the same piece. I am entirely content listening to the highlights. As I said before, I may be musically challanged, but this CD is my favorite.
Good selection of pieces, uniformly flat performances.......2000-07-27
This is a collection of choral selection from previous Telarc recordings featuring the Robert Shaw Chorale and the Atlanta Symphony. Recording dates range from 1979 to 1993.
It's a great cross-sampling of (mostly) Romantic-era choral pieces, the choral singing is as usual impeccable, and it's a great group of soloists.
As these excerpts are from some of my very favorite pieces of music, I kept wondering why I wasn't more enthusiastic about this compilation.
Part of the problem is hearing the music in excerpts (a movement here, an aria there) is pretty frustrating. Entering smack in the middle of the last movement of Mahler 8, it can take you a while to get your musical bearings.
I'm also not wild about most of the interpretations, many of which struck me as kind of flat and uninspired (the Verdi Requiem and the Mahler 8 stick out in my mind). Suffice to say I didn't learn anything new about any of the pieces on the album, and in every case there is a recording of the work I like much better. (Except the Cavalleria rusticana excerpt, which I really liked, go figure.)
Bottom line: if you're not familiar with these works, and want a good (and very well-performed) cross-section of Romantic choral pieces, give it a listen. But then do yourself a favor and buy complete and more inspired versions of the pieces you really like.
Standard Shaw.......2000-05-29
Like all of Shaw's recordings, this one is once again up to standards. A great assortment of selections from the religous works of many artists.

A musical tour de force, and a time machine.......2000-04-03
"Music of the Reformation" is not only a tour de force by two of the great ensembles of eastern Germany (the famous choir of men and boys at Dresden's Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross, and the Capella Fidicinia of Leipzig which performs on original and reconstructed Renaissance instruments), it's also a journey through music into one of the great conflicts of the Reformation: the struggle between Martin Luther and the radical priest, Thomas Muentzer.
The liturgical poetry of both Reformers is juxtaposed in this two-CD collection. Muentzer took the Bible's vision of social equality literally and became a leading figure in the famous "Peasants' Revolt" that was eventually crushed by the combined forces of Germany's Protestant and Roman Catholic princes. Luther, who remained loyal to his patrons in high places, savagely denounced the rebels in a tract titled "The Murdering, Thieving Hoards of Peasants." Muentzer occupied a special place in Luther's gallery of theological horrors. When the Peasants' Revolt foundered, both Muentzer and his writings were obliterated; but some of his music survived.
Surprisingly, Muentzer's musical style is the more conservative of the two. He translated the traditional texts of the Latin Mass and Divine Office into contemporary German but then set the new words to traditional Gregorian melodies and psalm tones. Luther, who was more sophisticated musically, turned his texts over to the most advanced composers of the day.
Muentzer's monodic chants and the rich polyphonic treatments of Luther's liturgical poetry are communicated brilliantly in performances that are technically nearly perfect. Fans of Gregorian chant should compare these down-to-earth German interpretations of the traditional forms with the more fluid style inspired by Solesmes. But emotion is not absent from these recordings: particularly in the compositions by Luther's friend, Johann Walther, the choir and instrumentalists bring the listener to the intensity of religious ecstasy the composer (and the Reformer) intended. These may be some of the finest religious compositions of early Renaissasnce polyphany.
The collection is issued by "Berlin Classics"--which has created a new market based on the archives of "VEB Deutsche Schallplatten"--the former state-owned recording company of the now-defunct German Democratic Republic. These recordings were first-rate technically and have been digitally remastered for the new technology.

A Fundamental.......2007-03-29
Not always have we got a clear notion as to the extent in which Buxtehude influenced the work of J.S. Bach. Neither is a Buxtehude's full collection available in just one album at such an accesible price. This is an impeccable remasterisation of a celebrated performance of Walter Kraft on the Lubeck Cathedral organ: an instrument very similar to those Buxtehude wrote for.
Die Orgelwerke Buxtehudes minus 2.......2006-07-07
This is by far (with the exception of the set performed by Harald Vogel) the best recording of Buxtehude's complete output for Organ. With two exceptions (not included in this recording are the Praeludium C-Dur BuxWV 138 and the Kanzonette a-Moll BuxWV 225), Walter Kraft here records the entire opus for Organ of his illustrious predecessor at the post of Organist and the Marienkirche zu Luebeck--the Danish/German Organist Dietrich Buxtehude.

Superb.......2005-12-15
Delalande was extremely well regarded in his own time, but there are not that many recordings of his music available, and as such is under-represented in the catalogue. He was acknowledged as a master of the grand motet, of which the three offered here are very good examples.
The Te Deum is every bit as engaging as the more famous one by Charpentier, and to tell the truth, I enjoy the Delalande work quite a bit more. Most of the movements are short, but they are all lovely and notable.
Super flumina Babylonis and Confitebor are likewise very good, the last movements of each exhibiting tremendous energy and momentum.
Les Arts Florrisants under William Christie show why they are masters in this repetoire. The soloists are all drawn from the chorus, but with names like Gens, Fouchecourt, Correas and Piau, they are not second-rate singers at all. Christie has a way of making these grands motets sound very grand, and this release is one of the best Delalande recordings you will find.
Superb Grand Motets.......2003-11-07
This disc features Les Arts Florissants, for me, the best French baroque ensemble, under great conductor and harpsichordist William Christie. A recording from early 90's in Harmonia Mundi, with excellent acoustics and performance.
The initial Te Deum makes use of full choirs and soloists with some brass and timpani. The next Grand Motets are cast for smaller forces, alternating full choirs and more austere solo recitatives. All around, this is music of triumph and "grandeur", perfect for festing Louis XIV at his Chapelle Royale. Fans of French Baroque Music will be delighted.

Customer Reviews:
Glorious sound in a glorious space.......2005-10-04
As I have had a long personal relationship with both Washington National Cathedral and John Fenstermaker, the conductor of this disc, it would be difficult for me to find anything critical to say about it. The sound brings back memories, but that's another story. The balance of forces - an immense organ, a very large choir (two combined, actually), and a brass band - is superb for a recording in a space notoriously difficult to get a balanced sound in. I was particularly interested in the addition of the brass band to things like Finzi's "God is gone up," which (as far as I know) was not originally scored to include it. It's a big, glorious sound in a big, glorious space, but also has some more contemplative moments (e.g. Palestrina's "Sicut cervus" and Tallis's "If ye love me" ) and the unusual treat of about 45 seconds of carillon music (I'd have liked more!) at the beginning. Consider this CD an ESSENTIAL addition to the library of any fan of Anglican church music at its best.
A truly essential recording.......1999-07-21
This is possibly the best album ever recorded by a men and boys choir. Every fan of choral work owes it to themselves to search out and buy a copy of this CD. Every single composition included is unforgettable and moving. Try to find a copy however you can -- you won't regret it. Recorded as a celebration of the completion of Washington National Cathedral in 1991, this CD is an impressive achievement in and of itself. Famous choral works are balanced perfectly with lesser-known, Nathional Cathedral-affiliated composers, all adding up to an enlightening and highly enjoyable listening experience. Be sure to listen to the powerful majesty of the Cathedral's Great Organ, displayed on this recording in all its ground-shaking grandeur.
