5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest piano concertos.......2005-10-28

There may not be as many dazzling piano solos as in some other concertos, but Brahms' 2nd is still one of my favorites. The piano is interwoven with the symphony throughout most of the concerto. It is even present at the very beginning of the first movement, foregoing the ritornello tradition of waiting until after a grand orhestral opening for the soloist's entrance.

Although Brahms was of the Romantic period, his works often seemed more oriented to the Classical period. This piece, though, couldn't be more Romantic, and it is laced with beautiful melodies throughout. Claudio Abbado does a masterful job of getting the tempi just right and extracting the appropriate emotional impact without ever letting it be overwrought. Alfred Brendel plays in concert with the symphony, avoiding any tendency for showboating. A "concerto" played as such.

The recorded sound is excellent. The piano is perfectly balanced with the orchestra, one never drowning out the other. The sound is lush and very realistic. Altogether, this is a can't miss version of Brahms' 2nd piano concerto.

When i first heard Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, it was performed in C Minor... a cassette which literally was played to pieces. I was later able to locate this masterpiece yet again with help from the folks at Opus© music. The renditition they sent me was the CD i am currently writing my review for. This work begins very unassuming, transitions to piano with a bit of awkwardness, and by the time the fourth and final movement is completed, if the volume on your stereo hasn't been hiked up, then you simply don't have an ear for classical music. This is Brahms 83rd composition (Opus 83) and is just downright powerful and moving. I hold this work up next to Beethovens "Ode to Joy" and Dvoraks' New World Symphony. It lifts the spirits and fills the soul with musical power. This is a must for any serious classical music lover. Be Blessed
