Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Gilbert Kaplan is a man with a mania and the means to indulge it. A wealthy publisher, he became obsessed with Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony, learned to conduct it, hired an orchestra and choruses, and did a quite respectable job with it, here memorialized along with the Adagietto from the Symphony No. 5. As vanity projects go, this one is several cuts above the rest. The package includes a lot of unusual goodies, including a recording of Mahler's own piano rolls, Mahler Remembered, recorded interviews with instrumentalists who worked with the composer, and, best of all, The Mahler Album. A CD-ROM digest version of Kaplan's coffee table book by the same name; The Mahler Album contains all the pictures of Mahler, his family, and popular caricatures that most people will ever want. There's even a pocket-sized reproduction of the first edition score. Kaplan may not go down in history as one of the great Mahler conductors, but this is a nifty little set and deserving of a place on the shelf. --Sarah Bryan Miller

A unique view on Mahler's swansong.......2005-10-14
The Mahler Symphony No. 9 is typically seen as Mahler's omen of death because it was written at the time of the composer's heart ailment and the death of his daughter. Endearing stories about composers not outliving their Ninth Symphonies (Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner among others) contribute to the legend that the Mahler 9 portrays the end of the composer's life.
In this performance, Karel Ancerl takes a unique view of the music. Compared to other versions I have heard including the Haitink, Lopez Cobos and Karajan's 1982 concert version -- which most critics consider the benchmark performance of this score -- Ancerl's performance at first seemed "fast" to me. His tempo in the first movement seemed almost jaunty compared to others and his total time of 78:53 is rapid compared to most recordings.
However, as the vast first movement continued to unfold, an alternate description of the music began to appear. Ancerl's approach was no longer universally fast; it was more episodic, moving from urgency to tentativeness to happiness to victorious emotions.
At about 11:35, Ancerl suddenly crashes and returns to the depth of despair, with happiness recurring at 15:30. And this with 11 minutes to go in the first movement! It is quite a contrast to Karajan's outlook of extended tragedy.
The second movement landler is more traditional in Ancerl's hands, with the Burleske in the third movement becoming more of a grotesque dance of instruments than the other versions I've heard.
In the finale, where Karajan made his name with this work by maintaining tension throughout the more than 30-minute span, Ancerl projects extended sorrow without tension while maintaining the pain inherent to Mahler's end of life vision. It later morphs to stream of consciousness before evolving to the final inevitable abyss of nothingness that critics and musicologists testify is Mahler's end.
I enjoy this performance, in which the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra plays with authoritative virtuosity. Recorded in 1966 in the notoriously clangorous Rudolfinum, the sound on the Ancerl "Gold Edition" CD has been improved and is in league with modern DDD recordings. Every instrument can be heard and the recording is head and shoulders above the Karajan 1982 classic.
All told, this is a fine performance from one of the eminent conductors from the golden era of classical recordings in sound that rivals the best from today. For $10 or less, this is excellent value and should be considered by all Mahler lovers.
Absolutely crushing Mahler!!.......2005-07-31
This is a great version of the 9th.
I have particularly come to enjoy the last two movements. The neurotic elements of the 3rd and the heavenly parts of 4 sell it to me.
You can't miss with this recording.
Enjoy!!
A superb interpretation of Mahler #9.......2004-11-01
This classic Karel Ancerl recording is, in my opinion, one of the best accounts of Mahler's ninth symphony that is available at present. Here we have it in a new remastering, which improves the original stereo sound.
The playing of the orchestra is outstanding, especially the brass department (note the typical horn vibrato) and the recording quality is very good for its age. But, above all, this CD is to be treasured for Ancer's superb interpretation, which is as good as an interpretation can be: moving, powerful, balanced, convincing, non-mainstream, and provoking.
Strongly recommended!

Album Description
Mahler's grand expansion of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony employs an extra 4 horns and an extra set of Timpani, revoicing many passages of the venerable masterpiece. Mahler adds occasional counter-melodies and thickens the scoring in order to create his own heightened dynamic scale. Of his own performances of this re-scoring, Mahler wrote: "Far from following any arbitrary purpose or course, but also without allowing himself to be led astray by tradition, (this conductor) was constantly and solely concerned with carrying out Beethoven's wishes in their minutest detail, and ensuring that nothing the master intended should be sacrificed or drowned out amid the general confusion of sound."
Customer Reviews:
Great listen.......2005-05-02
Tiboris's recording of Beethoven 9 with Mahler's "Retuschen" is a joy to listen to. I find it among the most satisfying recordings I know, especially in the finale. Not all of the details of the performance are consistent with the established research on Mahler's performing scores, and so it becomes difficult to sort out what changes are Mahler's, versus those of others who have used the score. Nevertheless, this recording makes the changes readily audible.
Particular changes of note:
* Horns 5 & 6 double the bassons about 30 seconds into the scherzo.
* The re-written opening of the finale, incorporating the expanded brass section and filling in notes unavailable to Beethoven's natural brass instruments.
* The sequential entrances of woodwinds and brass during the first "Ode to Joy" theme, and the extensive re-orchestration of the section that immediately follows.
Norrington, eat your heart out!.......2001-03-10
This version brings several questions to mind. What if Beethoven had not gone deaf before the first performance of his Ninth Symphony? What if Beethoven had Mahler's orchestra? Hopefully, this CD will attempt to answer that.
Also, I have never been convinced by these so-called "period" recordings, where the conductors try to perform an "authentic" performance of this symphony. I find them too out-of-sync, if not out-of-date. Orchestras have changed since then, and so have concert halls. So I believe there is no such thing as an authentic performance. It's just how you look at it. I personally can't tell much difference in instrumentation, with the exception of the piano and timpani, which I think sound richer today. Beethoven might have had a different opinion if he had modern instruments.
And finally, by all means, don't accept this CD as a substitute for the original version. I would recommend supplementing it with the 1961 recording by George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra (Sony #46533).
The most moving..........2000-11-18
I have both the Mahler edition of Beethovens 9th and two of Beethovens piece (each with a different conductor), and by far, the Mahler edition is the most moving and fantastic of the three. If you have Beethoven's 9th already, you must have the Mahler edition. I won't lecture on the differences/improvements Mahler made, though I must proclaim that this is the greatest of music I have heard in a long time.

Ancerl - The Gold Standard.......2003-08-07
The Supraphon label has been doing an excellent job of reissuing large parts of their back catalog over the last few years. Not only are they releasing numerous performances with the Czech Philharmonic and visiting conductors like Kletzki, Markevitch, Matacic and Fournet, but they have also remastered (in 24/96) many of the recordings of conductor Karel Ancerl in a new series called the "Gold Edition." Volume 6 of this series features Ancerl and the Czech PO in a 1964 stereo recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 1, and a 1962 stereo recording of Strauss' Till Eulenspiegels tone poem. The performances are excellent, and Ancerl's Mahler compares nicely to more celebrated recordings by Kubelik, Bernstein and Walter. With quality discs such as this, I look forward to purchasing (and reviewing) more titles from the "Gold Edition."

Customer Reviews:
The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24
If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

Don't Miss this Opportunity!.......2007-04-18
Kathleen Ferrier will remain one of the outstanding voices to bless the world of music, regardless of how many others come along and perform the same repertoire with excellence.
Entirely apart from the pathos of Ferrier's early death from cancer, her voice has a distinctly haunting range of qualities that simply touch the human soul in its deepest realms. Her superb training and musicianship brought to full flower amazing possibilities of interpretation from opera to light popular/traditional song, from Gluck, Bach and Handel to Mahler, and much inbetween.
That a fairly complete discography has become available in the digital era, with remastered versions of her 1940s and early 1950s analog recordings, is a magnificent gift to ongoing generations of music lovers. For those of us whose much loved and played LPs need to be retired, it's heavenly!
For a nostalgic and deeply moving musical experience, listen to Ferrier's "He was Despised" alongside the higher version sung by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. More than an early end links these two exquisite voices. I can't find words to convey the impact, without resorting to corny and overused adjectives.
Don't miss out owning this exquisite set that spans her all-too-short career. I made the mistake of not buying it as soon as I saw it appear in the music store, and ended up paying way more by having to locate the CDs individually.

Customer Reviews:
Buy it on the merits of the Third Symphony.......2006-10-16
I have been familiar with this fine orchestra and conductor since purchasing a CD of the Rachmaninoff Third Concerto with this orchestra and conductor over 15 years ago with pianist Santiago Rodrigo, in a superb performance on the Elan label. I was pleased to learn this orchestra and conductor (I recommend visiting Mr. Tabakov's website) also recorded a complete Mahler symphony cycle, available at super-budget price on the German Capriccio label. I was recently in the market for a recordings of the Mahler Third, as my local community orchestra is playing this work shortly, so could not resist buying the whole cycle for little more than than the price of two full-priced Thirds.
I can recommend this set on the basis of listening to the Third Symphony only, so far. Engineering is quite satifactory (nice sound stage)and I enjoyed the performance (all the recordings in this set date from about 1990) and look forward to hearing the rest of the set. Tempos are well-judged and the playing and singing are quite satisfactory.
I would say this is a better performance than the Abravanel/Utah (Vanguard) and on a least a par with Haitink (Philips). The Bernstein/NY Phil. (DG) is the best interpretation I have heard so far, but there are not huge differences between any of these readings. The Chailly CD/SACD version has outstanding sonics; the dynamic contrasts in the first movement of the Third are as great as any symphonic work I am aware of and should raise goose bumps on your arms the first time you hear it.
Mahler is impressive, even when played with shortcomings.......2006-06-29
What can you expect of a complete set of Mahler's symphonies, extremely reasonably priced, played by the not all too familiar Sofia Philharmonic? Well, there are just as many 'accidents' as interesting moments, and there certainly is an unmistakable air of enthousiasm in the air... So don't dismiss this set right on.
I'm not going to pretend the lack of orchestral finesse, body and pedigree in the orchestra isn't there. Strings are uniformly thin (most noteable in the First, Seventh, Fourth and Eight symphonies), the trumpets sound shy, horns very often lose their bite and the woodwinds play adequate though hardly with distinction. Trombones on the other hand are quite assertive, the percussion is mindblowing and the choral contributions are not at all bad. It's all, still, a great matter of taste. People looking for a solid, uniformly approach of Mahler's everest-peaks can feel insulted by Tabakov's forces. Those wanting a bit more enthousiasm, organized chaos and a feeling of 'live' musicmaking (these are, still, studio recordings) might be quite enchanted.
Highlights include the Third and Sixth, arguably the best played renditions in the set. Even the Seventh, where the orchestral shortcomings are as plain as the nose on your face, has it charms, with a Finale that this time really is a organized chaos. The Eigth has some impressive choral contributions (I was quite taken by the Boy Choir) though the closing pages sound like the smothering of the brass players in a big cloud of orchestral grandeur. The opening of No. 9 assembles Chailly's, surprisingly, quite slow and contemplating, No. 2 is decent but hardly visionary and the First, Fourth and Fifth simply can't compete with the dozens of other, great available versions.
Still, 3 stars, since the numerous liabillities cannot hide the clear intention of Tabakov and band to present Mahler's musical heritage with fervour and clarity. In fact, were it not for the hundreds of other, excellent available versions, we might not even feel something's missing.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer Dieskau with Deutsche Grammophon.......2005-11-08
"An die Musik", aptly named after the famous Schubert lied of the same title, is an excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's recorded output for Deutsche Grammophon over the past 56 years. On the CDs, there are six Schubert lieder from Fischer-Dieskau's 21 disc set with pianist Gerald Moore, (dating from ca. 1970) and other lieder by Wolf, Richard Strauss, Brahms, and Schoeck. Also included are two chansons of Claude Debussy, and arias from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" and "Don Giovanni", both conducted by Ferenc Fricsay; small part of Fricsay's Orff "Carmina Burana" (rec. 1949), Schubert's "Dichterliebe" cycle with pianist Jorg Demus; and the 4 Ruckert lieder with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic. Fischer-Dieskau is amazing, with such a wide repertory, and such enthusiasm for singing such varied and different styles of music.
The bonus DVD, lasting about 28 minutes, is very interesting to watch and listen to. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and pianist Sviatoslav Richter peform 8 famous Schubert lieder in the great room of a hotel in a remote Bavarian village, in utterly charming and rather informal surroundings. The camera work is minimal, the sound, very fine but a little low level mono: filmed in 1978. Fischer-Dieskau looks alot younger here than more recent photos of him, but a little older and more classy than the photos I'm used to seeing of him, which date from the late 1960s. Fischer-Dieskau and Richter work as one, and their partnership and great working relationship is evident from measure 1. There is no doubt watching this that they had alot of fun performing for the cameras.
I am grateful DG released this set: 2 very full discs at over 70 minutes of music each, + the DVD of a telecast not seen since 1978. The sound is very good, even in the mono tracks, and if you like lieder and opera excerpts, you will be delighted. I mention this as one who's experienced Fischer-Dieskau's recordings for 25 years, and been usually delighted by them.

Another Bernstein Mahler Recording, Another Interpretation.......2005-12-04
Listening to the local classical music station on the way home from a concert this recording of the Mahler Symphony No. 2 'The Resurrection' was playing and the final movement of the symphony was so unlike those familiar that it was reason for pulling to the side and waiting for the announcer's identification. Lo and behold it was this 'Royal Edition' conducted by Leonard Bernstein
in what seems to be 1974!
The acoustics are not terrific but the performance is bracing. The tempo of the final movement is Bernstein's slowest and yet in many ways his most pungent. He conducts the London Symphony Orchestra and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus (the latter with not the finest choral sound on recordings!) and has chosen the luminous Dame Janet Baker and Sheila Armstrong as soloists. We all have our favorite recordings of all the Mahler symphonies, but this arresting performance reminds us that Leonard Bernstein was the champion for introducing Mahler to US audiences. And for that fact alone he will always be cherished.
The recording also offers a fine performance of the Mahler Symphony No. 1, this time with the New York Philharmonic and one well known on other releases. The "Royal Edition" title given this 2 CD set bears on the cover a watercolor of Balmoral Castle by the Prince of Wales...a nice little touch though with nothing to do with the music!
