5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of Prokofiev's major works.......2007-06-25

I was introduced to the music of Prokofiev through his symphonies, and was immediately drawn in by the beauty of his music. So I bought this box set without listening to any other of his works first.

I was not disappointed in any way. Here, collected together very nicely, are a large portion of Prokofiev's works. Many of the performances here are reissues of past recordings, mostly from the '80s and early '90s. There are many imminent performers here, such as Mstislav Rostropovich (Prokofiev was a good friend and teacher of Rostropovich, and dedicated his Cello concerto to him after hearing him play), Seiji Ozawa, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and many other excellent musicians and orchestras. Rest assured that these are some of the best performances available of the works included.

The recording quality is unquestionable. Most of the performances are digital, clean, and rich (no distorted, thin, distant, or weak recordings here!). The only disc which contains poor recordings is the Archive Recordings disc, which is understandable as the recordings are very old (including Prokofiev playing or singing some of his own works and some works by other composers).

As for range of compositions included, we have here a magnificent collection of Prokofiev's most important music (and some of his rarer pieces as well): his entire symphonies and concertos, a selection of his instrumental music (including violin, flute, cello, and piano sonatas), many of his stage works including Romeo & Juliet, Alexander Nevsky, the Prodigal Son, The Steel Step, The Love for Three Oranges, Lieutenant Kije, etc., and an entire recording of his War and Peace opera.

One inclusion that I find somewhat baffling is that of 4 different versions of Peter and the Wolf: English, German, Spanish, and French. I would have been content with just the English, but I suppose listeners from other countries can benefit from the other languages.

I really can think of no better way to start a collection of Prokofiev's music. Here you can get his major works, and for a decent price (used copies can be a very good deal). If you are interested in the music of Prokofiev, or in 20th century classical music, this set is a great way to get a thorough introduction to Prokofiev. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A great gift for classical collectors.......2004-05-13

I think it's needless to say how famous are S. Prokofiev and his works. I just want to give some details about this collectible gem.

-Concertos box: 4 CDs. Including concertos for violin(no1 and 2), for piano, symphony-concerto for cello.
    -Symphonies box: 4 CDs from sym No1 to sym no7. no4: Op.47 and Op.112

    -War and Peace opera: 4CDs
-Bonus: Role music. Including piano pieces.

There is no question about the quality:
    -Sound: 5 stars
    -Performers technique: 5 stars
    -Boxes and color: 5 stars
    -Price: $7/CD is acceptable.

Finally, I would like to use Sviatoslav Prokofiev's words: "This Anniversary boxset is a most impressive testimony to the interest my father's music arouse among artists, orchestras and audiences alike."

    5 out of 5 stars DEPENDABLE.......2007-07-15

Prokofiev seems to have been rather shy of composing for the violin. Of the six works presented here only one, the F minor sonata, was intended for the violin in the first place, and it needed persuasion from David Oistrakh to make the composer rescue it from his `postponed' file. The other sonata was originally for flute and piano, the Five Pieces op 35 started life as wordless vocalises, and the other three short numbers are arrangements by Heifetz. However the refitting jobs have been done well, and the pieces all sound natural as we have them here, but I am tantalised by the revelation in the liner-note that the F minor sonata was inspired by Handel. Its 4-movement scheme suggests the slow-quick-slow-quick layout of Handel's duo sonatas whereas the 4 movements of the other sonata are to the later pattern standardised by Haydn in his quartets and symphonies, but I'm still groping for what the precise influence of Handel might have been on the work's content.

This set of performances ought to be a safe bet for anyone who likes Prokofiev at all, but particularly for those who find the accounts by Kremer and Argerich over-characterised. I am not myself of their number. I still prefer the dramatic handling that Kremer and Argerich give to the two sonatas, especially to the first, and I'm also pleased with the more resonant and roomy acoustic on the DG disc. Nevertheless I find more or less nothing to criticise here, so when I also take into account the three small bonus extras here I can think of no good reason for withholding a fifth star. Gil and Orli Shaham take each movement of the eight that make up the sonatas just a tad slower than Kremer and Argerich do, but as if by way of counterbalance they play the last four of the Five Pieces a little faster. The playing is accomplished and idiomatic, and brother and sister make a smooth and sympathetic partnership. The famous ghostly 'freddo' effect for the violin in the first movement of the first sonata is very effectively done indeed, the lyricism of the second sonata is most attractively put over, there is plenty of verve in the `Heifetz' numbers, the Five Melodies are properly appealing - as I've said once already, everything is as it should be. This is a textbook set of model performances, and the recording is a model of tact and discretion to match.

I found the lengthy liner-note by Harlow Robinson very interesting and informative, but perhaps I ought to say that it is by way of being something of an essay going beyond basic comment on the works comprised in the set.

4 out of 5 stars Both Shahams are enticing musicians.......2006-12-01

Gil Shaham has always held a youthful appeal, not to the extent of Nigel Kennedy's punk-rock pose (which has earned him million-seller CDs), but enough to support unusual ventures. His Paganini duets with guitar sold well, and he took it on tour. Now he has an independent label to promote his music-making with his talented sister, pianist Orli. I've enoucntered a CD devoted to Faure as well as this one devoted to Prokofiev's two violin sonatas.

Many listeners may lie the side attractions more--we get transcriptions of the March form the Love for Three Oranges as well as lyrical Songs Without Words. As to the sonatas themselves, brother and sister make a very good team. Orli is expressive and secure. She's not the world-class player that gil is, however. His execution of both sonatas is first-rate, the equal of Perlman in the more lyrical, tuneful Sonata No 2, where Shaham's trademark sweetness of tone is very enticing. The aggresive Sonata No. 1 calls for the bite of Oistrakh-Richter or the toughness of Kremer-Argerich, so it's not as effective. but the Shahams cretainly give a very good reading. Overall, this is a highly successful disc on all counts.

The interpreter of Romeo and Juliet must be conscious of the deeper, more passionate expression--both brutal and tender--behind the brilliance of Prokofiev's score. He must also have a feeling for the dance, for as symphonic as this music is, its soul is rhythm. André Previn's 1973 reading with the London Symphony is warm, sensitive, and gorgeously played: here is a man who clearly knows something about love. The character of individual scenes is well caught, particularly that of the balcony scene. There is humor in the phrasing, and the tempos are indeed eminently danceable. Most appealing of all, the whole affair has a seductive ardor that can be felt in the treatment of even the smallest details. --Ted Libbey

    5 out of 5 stars A soaring, inspiring performance.......2004-12-09

I love when music tells a story; I sit back, close my eyes and can picture what is taking place. Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet is an incredible music story that ranges from passionate high notes of innocent Juliet to low, throbbing notes of a hate battle between warring families. At times there is a humorous twinge in the music, as if the strings are smiling and the brass are laughing; other times a sadness pervades the notes. The dynamics, phrasing, and altogether blend of instruments in this recording make it incredible to listen to. Every song has impecable detail that makes the song new and different every time. Andre Previn did a fantastic job conducting this one, making the music very fresh and original.
The insert inside this CD is also wonderful since it details the story that goes with the music. Reading what is taking place at each moment gave me a deep appreciateion for this wonderful music; the emotions really come through the playing.
Lastly, amazingly enough, Prokiev's Romeo and Juliet was inspiring enough to make me want to pull Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet off the shelf! Turly this is a 'soundtrack' to Shakespeare's work.
Incredible emotion, beautiful music, and a heart-rending story-- what more could you want?

5 out of 5 stars One of the great ballet recordings........2004-03-18

Andre Previn made several ballet recordings for EMI in the '70"s. Most critics agree that this one is the best of those and has stood the test of time. Some may prefer the Maazel/Cleveland performance, with its fireworks and emphasis on brass. That recording surely holds a special place in my collection, but Previn reigns supreme in my book. The Russian flare with which Previn wields his baton is very pleasing, but he knows how to stir up excitment when needed. The horns, especially, make a tremendous impact. True, the sound is not as "in your face" as the Maazel/Cleveland recording is, but Previn makes up for it with character. The love music soars, with the LSO strings rising to the occasion; the street dances in Act 2 are given just the right touch of humor, creating a contrast to the fight music to come.

Where Maazel wins is in the dramatic music, with the interplay of the brass sending shivers up one's spine. But where Maazel loses ME is in his choice of speeds. Some feel Previn is too slow, but light speed would be considered slow compared to Maazel.

Ultimately, both of these recordings deserve a high place in any collection, but at times they sound so different that the artists seem to be performing different scores. So if spectacle and Technicolor sound is all that is needed, stay with Maazel. For balance, romance, and a complete sonic picture, stick with Previn.

I consider Romeo & Juliet Prokofiev's masterpiece. I own many excellent recordings of music from this ballet so I am very familiar with different performances from which to judge the finest. While this complete recording with Previn and the London Symphony is fine, it is surpassed by the Cleveland Orchestra on London/Decca with Maazel. Simply put, the Cleveland Orchestra is a far superior ensemble with outstanding musicians. I can hear mistakes in the London Symphony (especially the trumpets) whereas the Cleveland winds are awesome. The London/Decca recording has much better sound as well. So while both orchestras play the music with panache, one needs to look no further than to the Cleveland Orchestra recording of Romeo and Juliet which is in a class by itself by virtue of it's outstanding performance and sound.

    5 out of 5 stars Good.......2000-06-14

Prokofiev's ballet `Romeo and Juliet' is one of my favorite pieces of muisc. I have many versions including excerpts done by Myung-Whun Chung, Michael Tilson Thomas, Kurt Masur, Sir Georg Solti, and the complete ballet with Lorin Maazel. My most recent purchase is this version featuring Andre Previn conducting London Symphony. It was recorded in 1973 and the sound quality is excellent though sometimes you can tell when the engineers fiddle with the balance if you listen critically. For example, in the final scene of Act 2 where Romeo kills Tybalt I notice some problems, but not too bad. The tempos are generally all a lot slower than the tempos on the several versions I have, but they work extremely well most of the time. I find Previn's deathly slow tempo in the interlude between Scenes 1 and 2 of Act 1 exasperating, but I find the slower tempos in the fighting music very effective. I would recommend it over Maazel's with Cleveland, but the best solution is to get them both, of course! Maazel's is much more driven, bombastic you could say while Previn is more sympathetic though wild where necessary; he pays a lot more attention to the details in the score and the story. Maazel has better trumpets (most of the time) and Previn has better horns.

5 out of 5 stars bladmuziek "Romeo and Julliet" piano en viool.......1999-09-05

    Beste Andre Rieu,

Alvast bedankt!

    De muzikale groeten

Amke Edomskis een groot bewonderaar (13 jaar)

4 out of 5 stars An eye-opening Prokofiev survey (try to buy it used).......2006-03-26

I can't see paying full price for a two-CD compensdium, even one as lavish as this package, when all the itmes are samples for promoting Universal's catalog (expect a good representation by Ashkenazy, Rostropovich, Previn, and Gergiev). But the selection is good enough and often rare eough to warrant a buy if the price is low.

As I listened straight through, I was surprised at how unacquainted I actually was with the wide extent of Prokofiev's style. From the very early "Dreams," which could be mistaken for Glazunov through the unfamiliar operas (Betrothal in a Monastery Garden, Semyon Kotko) to the final, sadly diminished works like the Seventh Sym. and the cello concerto, the composer covered every major Russian style of the century. I didn't find any new masterful performances--not that a short excerpt is a good enough trial--but everything here is well performced. Any listener should find something unexpected and intriguing in this two-and-a-half-hour traversal.
