Wonderful Delius plus very nice Rubbra.......2007-07-10
I must admit that I bought this disc for the Delius violin sonatas. I have Sammons' famous recording of the Delius violin concerto, but I was unaware that he had also recorded the sonatas. I may be mistaken, but this might be the first time that all 3 of the sonatas have appeared together played by Sammons. Although these are older recordings, Michael Dutton has worked his magic once again in making them sound vibrant and musical. As if the Delius works weren't enough, we get a little-known work of Rubbra that is quite attractive. All admirers of Delius or violin repertoire should hear these recordings.

Great music from a 20th c. master, but subpar production values........2006-06-16
I will not rate or discuss the merits of Rubbra's music much, but suffice to say his was a unique and calm voice among musical art of the 20th c. For the strength of logic and serenity that comes from expert craftsmanship, Rubbra should be on your list of preferred composers. But now I must relate that I felt Naxos skimped a bit on the production of the CD itself. The sound quality is not as good (nor is the violin concerto finale as sprightly as) the Conifer Classics issue of this same, brilliant work. Mainly I bought this for the Improvisation, and while it is good,among Rubbra's shorter orchestral works it doesn't stand out as strongly as his Overture: Resurgam, or the admittedly longer Sinfonia Concertante for Piano and Orchestra. Still it is a welcome find. The liner notes for my copy are a flimsy, shiny paper and the jewel case is also thin and insubstantial. Production was assisted with the help of the Rubbra estate, and so I don't know if Naxos may have backed off their normally high production standards or if this signals a cheapening of their (physical) product, but I feel it is worth noting. Also I did buy it NEW, so I don't believe this was a cobbled together promotional copy, etc.
Fine place to start with an under-rated composer.......2006-02-26
Edmund Rubbra was born just after the turn of the 20th century, and died not many years before it was over. Like many 20th century English composers, he refused to abandon tonality, but, instead, simply updated his musical language such that tonal centers are more elusive than what went before, melodies somewhat more evasive. Fair comparisons would be Alwyn, Piston, Barber, Diamond, and the like, although Rubbra largely eschewed the romanticism in which some of those composers sometimes indulged.
In fact, it would be fair to call Rubbra's music, at least on this disc, relatively low-key. The Improvisations on Virginal Pieces by Giles Farnaby are Pulcinella-like pastiches; generally satisfying, for what they are. The Violin Concerto and the Improvisation for Violin and Orchestra are the real meat of the program. The liner notes refer to a "serene joyfulness" as being Rubbra's hallmark, which is a fair description for these pieces and for parts of his later symphonies. That's something that particularly attracts this listener to Rubbra's music. While it is muscular and forward-moving at appropriate moments, it is not violent or agressive.
The performances and sound are first rate; fully competitive with the Tamsin Little performance of the Concerto once available on Conifer.
