Piramidal: Hispano-American Baroque Music/Var
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
A program of seldom-heard but exquisitely beautiful sacred vocal music of the Latin American Baroque. The program focuses on texts that reflect the position and plight of women in that period, as inspired by the dreamlike poetry of Sister Juana Inés de la Cruz. Religious and profane arias (or, as they were called, divine and human tones) seemed to bridge the barriers of that society, religious music being virtually indistinguishable from that of court or theater. The very life of composers at this time was often a game of mirrors between the sacred and the mundane. A naturalized citizen of Mexico, soprano Valentina Álvarez was born in Uruguay, where she first studied. She has performed with various ensembles in Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and Mexico, specializing in early music through Mozart. Her interpretations have been well received by Latin American critics.

Amazon.com essential recording
Better known as the "White Album," this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock's towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on "Helter Skelter" was that he had vocal cords at the end. From Beach Boys knock-offs to reggae and to the unknown ("Revolution #9"), this has it all. Some records have legend written all over them; this is one. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
This Rocks!.......2007-07-25
This Cd ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! It's my favorite beatles album. It has a different veriety of songs. For Some songs you just have to appriciate the music instead of the lyrics like "why don't we do it in the road?"
The Only one i don't like is "Yer Blues". It's Like their solo albums. The Best CD i ever herd!!!!!!!!!!!!
A perennial classic.......2007-07-23
As good today as it was back in the 1980s when I first bought it.
Breaking the Barriers.......2007-06-29
This was the album where the Beatles grew up and moved into a more mature and less organised sound. That road had begun with "A Day In a Life" and "Within You Without You" and "Good Morning" in Sgt Peppers - but the Beatles were still a smart pop rock band then.
In the White Album, there is a wonderful sense of a loss of control - and yet this is still the Beatles at their creative peak. Not caring what people think, they're just playing to the maximum of their abilities. And shattering barriers.
The power of their varied personalities comes through. And different sides of their personality. Who cares about anything except the music I'm feeling now? seems to be the prevalent thought here. The White Album is the Beatles Matured - who would have imagined that the Beatles would create "Helter Skelter"? or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...Epic stuff that certified that the Beatles could rock. "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie" and "Blackbird" are eminently listenable. In fact - apart from some ditties and departures - the album is strikingly distinctive as a playground of sounds - it is dynamic from one end to the other and still eminently listenable and deep.
How do you define genius? This is one hard album to ignore.
Some of the Beatles Best Work.......2007-06-27
Wow...this brings back great memories. The songs are so diverse and unusual, showing their true talent and creative song writing abilities. The songs are fun and strange all at the same time. It is one of my favorites of the Beatles. When you can have "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Rocky Raccoon" and "Blackbird" in one package....what more can you ask!
It's Four Solo Albums & Still Great.......2007-06-23
This was on sale way Back in November 1968, for $5.00. That was the best five Bucks I ever spent. By 1968 after Eight years Together, The Beatles had just about seen it all, and they were very close to imploding. But, Lucky for all of us John, Paul, George & Ringo were on top of their Game and with the "White Album" they Presented their Best Songwriting and their greatest Playing over the Span of the 30 Tracks Here.
From: "Back in the USSR" all the way thro' to "Goodnight" and my favorite Track in reverse: "Revolution #9" you get a Beatle Album So Different & so Bold in it's Scope and Range from anything else they Gave us. We were Very Lucky to Have this band on the Planet from: 1964-70. It will never happen again in our Lifetime, But here it is, in all it's Glory...
There are almost 1,000 reviews posted here and About 95 Per-Cent of those Reviews are Gonna tell you how GREAT this is, and it is, Don't waste your Time Reading About this Record, BUY IT NOW.

The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

Summer music is here --- again!.......2007-06-14
These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.
Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!
The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14
Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".
However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".
This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.
Must have.......2007-06-13
If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.
Great Seller.......2007-06-12
Service was excellent and product in excellent condition. Would love to do business with seller again.
Great Sounds!.......2007-06-09
For those of us who remember crusing down the highway with the radio blasting, you can't beat this CD. You just have to sing along. It's a reminder of the times when music was exciting and fun. It's simply great music.

Album Description
The individual voices of the legendary Brothers GibbMaurice, Barry, and Robinare each wonderfully distinctive in their own right. In combination, they lock together for extraordinary harmonies, perfectly blending and magically complementing each other. This vocal wizardry is at the heart of their phenomenal success, which spanned five decades and transcended multiple genres with chart-busting glory. From their Beatles-esque `60s roots and the subsequent flowering of their own progressive pop-rock songwriting and performance style through their blue-eyed R&B superstardom and Saturday Night Fever disco-era domination, the Bee Gees constantly evolved and never stopped delivering timeless hits. The trio's beautifully crafted, sonically enchanting work is one of the cornerstones of contemporary popular music, and this hit-packed compilation spotlights their career-spanning best.

these cd's cover the very best of the Bee Gees over the past 4 decades
The 70s... The Bee Gees... There's no one without the other.......2007-07-05
I cannot imagine my life as teenager in the 70s, without a reference to the Bee Gees music. These guys are great composers and surely, one of the best vocal groups of that era!
This collection has (almost) all of their greatest hits... The most romantic and even the "Disco" ones (how can you mend your broken heart, without dancing 'Stayin' Alive' once again? Come on...!!!)
I suggest you to get this one, unless you're so lucky to get that wonderful 4-CD box collection issued some years ago...

Customer Reviews:
Lame.......2007-07-22
I was really disappointed in this CD. I was expecting a toned-down version of real classical music, but it sounds really fake and tinkley and weird. Not soothing at all.
Sounds like a cheap plastic toy.......2007-06-20
I have these DVD's and I can tell you that they will not be a huge part of my baby's development. I received them as a gift from someone that thinks that all you need to do is plunk your child in front of a TV all day without giving the baby any attention. You can see why these DVD's are popular at Day Care Centers or what I like to call, "Concentration camps for baby's with lazy parents", because they know that they can sit their kid/baby in front of the TV and let them turn into a thoughtless zombie while they listen to Baby Einstein totally ruin classics by Bach and DeBussy by playing the music with very cheap midi keyboards. I can get better quality music by whistling Dixie with a mouth-full of saltine crackers.
Also, it has been proven that classical music has nothing to do with the cognitive development of young people. Now, teach them how to play piano or violin and you have yourself an actual YOUNG EINSTEIN, but listening to this kind of music does nothing for the development of the brain. It is just for lazy parents that can't sit down with their kids and play with them or read them a book.
would make you sleepy.........2007-06-15
its a good product with very fine music and my toddler realizes that it is sleep time, if I play it. he goes to bed and sleeps after a couple songs. I have trouble in some songs are some months.. dont know why.
Kid's Music.......2007-06-08
I bought this CD for my grandniece, but after listening to it, I determined that no one would ever play this for her except me. I would have kept it for myself but I have the grown-up versions of each of the classical masterpieces on this CD. So, I ended up returning it for a full refund. If you want your kids to be exposed to classicl music, it's a great buy. But if you don't think they will get to listen to it, don't waste your time.
Baby Einstein: Lullaby Classics
Not soothing.......2007-06-07
These synthesizer versions of classical songs get really old, really fast. Worse yet, the songs are sometimes not soothing at all, especially the very first song. The song seems to get particularly loud and uptempo, which is precisely what you don't expect in a lullaby. Please listen to the sample of the first song at least before you buy.

You'd think there wouldn't be much more to present by a songwriter who recorded three albums in his lifetime and has been dead since 1974. However, interest in Nick Drake's riveting music has grown enormously in the new millennium. Rarities were added to a number of posthumous collections, but with Family Tree his estate has brought forth an hour of music that predates his first album, Five Leaves Left. This set illuminates Drake's musical background, with his mother and sister appearing, and even Drake himself on clarinet for a Mozart trio. He covers traditional numbers as well as songs by Dylan, Blind Boy Fuller, and Jackson C. Frank. There are clear links to his own early compositions, including a couple early versions that appeared on his debut. Some of this has circulated on bootlegs over the years, but here assembled and sonically polished, it radiates with warmth. Recorded in casual circumstances, there are bits of chatter and laughter between songs, painting a picture of a happy, loving home scene. --David Greenberger

Come Into The Garden.......2007-07-14
If you're seeking this out, I don't have to tell you what a special & rare talent Nick Drake is. Suffice it to say, this one is for die-hard fans. Those seeking proper introduction should proceed directly to Way To Blue or Pink Moon.
One of the most prized recordings in my collection has long been the Nick Drake bootleg, Tamworth-In-Arden 1967/68. I usually avoid buying boots, but couldn't resist the plethora of completely unheard/unreleased songs. Now, most of that material has been lovingly compiled (with a few surprises, as well as omissions) & cleaned up considerably in terms of the sound quality. Half of the songs are written by Drake & half are rather obscure covers, including 3 songs by the legendary Jackson C. Frank. Fans of Drake will hardly be disappointed.
Among the self-penned selections, the real highlights are the haunting "Leaving Me Behind" and "Come Into The Garden". "Rain" and "Bird Flew By" reveal a talent that is nearly fully formed. "Strange Meeting II" & "Been Smoking Too Long" were included on the Fruit Tree box set appendix, Time Of No Reply. Both are welcome here. (According to the liner notes that collection is soon to be re-released).
More than likely, fans will not be as thrilled with the two songs, written & sung by Nick's mother, Molly. But to be frank, I like them both even if they are a bit jarring amidst the rest of the set. Its nice to hear where Nick got some of his talent from.
Lovingly compiled & with copious liner notes (Nick's sister, Gabrielle's are quite moving) this is certainly worth the price of admission for longtime & new found fans of this brilliant and truely unique artist.

In a sense, The Warmth of the Sun is to 2004's double-platinum Sounds of Summer as 1975's Spirit of America was to the previous year's chart-topping Endless Summer. Both Summer compilations feature the obvious hits, and their followups collect less famous--though still worthy--tracks like "Hawaii," "409," and "Little Honda." But the 21st-century collections are sequenced by the Beach Boys themselves, and that means this volume's songs are second-tier in fame only. The casual fan whose curiosity was piqued by Sounds of Summer and picks this up for "All Summer Long" will be captivated by Brian Wilson's stops on the road to Pet Sounds ("Kiss Me Baby," "Please Let Me Wonder," "Let Him Run Wild," "The Little Girl I Once Knew"), moved by the father-son collaboration "Break Away" (in many ways the Beach Boys' farewell to the '60s), and floored by a string of five songs from the early '70s--a few of which had their genesis in the ill-fated Smile project--that are a perfect showcase for the maturity the group, especially Brian and Carl, managed to attain less than a decade after penning "Pom Pom Play Girl" ("Surf's Up," "Feel Flows," "All This Is That," "'Til I Die," "Sail On, Sailor"). Taken together, these two volumes provide an extraordinary portrait of a band attempting to straddle popularity and artistic vision, spotlighting each facet just long enough to make you want more. (Collectors note: many of these songs appear in new stereo remixes--they may not be the original Brian Wilson productions as he heard them, but being able to distinctly make out the vibraphone in "Let Him Run Wild" is worth it.) --Benjamin Lukoff

Compiled and sequenced by The Beach Boys themselves, The Warmth Of The Sun offers a rich view of the artistry and complex legacy of a band that has produced some of the most brilliant music of all time. This new career-spanning, 28-track collection illuminates much of The Beach Boys' most accomplished work. The Warmth Of The Sun is the perfect complement and companion to 2004's double-platinum Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of The Beach Boys.

My feel-good music.......2007-07-21
Beach Boys music never fails to make me feel good and always brings great memories to mind.
The WARMTH of the SUN~it won't ever die..........2007-07-18
The WARMTH of the SUN;SOUNDS of SUMMER;PET SOUNDS;& SMILE comprise the magnum opus of BRIAN WILSON and his legendary touring/recording session band,THE BEACH BOYS.Yes,Carole Kaye; The Wondermints;superb studio musicians;guest artists(like Roger McQuinn)and writers like Van Dyke Parks are more than pulling slack on some of these albums. But the above-named are America's greatest pop band's classics of classic Americana. The BEACH BOYS are to the USA what the Beatles were to Britain.Elvis remains King of Rock'n' Roll(nobody questions the hundreds of Presley comprises).Dylan remains America's pop Poet(with McQuinn of BYRDS renown still troubadour Prince of pop and electronic Folk)...
Brian Wilson is the genius who created a unique American music that is fun and sometimes JOYOUS to hear.If you never heard The BEACH BOYS in concert, seeing the Brian Wilson touring ensemble built-around The Wondermints is probably the best substitute. But give yourself a break~ The Beach Boys have been around more than 40 years, and made millions of listeners of all ages and musical "sophistication"happy: their WARMTH of the SUN...their choir-rich harmonies...won't ever die.
Recycled Package #102.......2007-07-17
Do you know how long it has been since the Beach Boys released an album with new original material? I do. That would have been in 1992, fifteen years ago, when they released the totally execrable "Summer in Paradise," an album so bad that it could have been recorded by Aleutian Eskimos pretending to be the Beach Boys. Do you know how many compilations or collections of old material the band released since then? I do. If you include imports and all of the collections that they licensed to others, there have been 101 separate releases. That is not a misprint. In the past fifteen years, one hundred and one cd's have been issued containing recycled material. While Mike Love and his cohorts complain about (and sue) Brian Wilson in absentia, they write nothing of consequence, but repackage everything they can get their hands on, especially the stuff that features the real mainman, Brian Wilson. I can understand when an old band tries to coast on its reputation, but 101 re-packaged pieces of product is so far beyond the pale and so abusive of the band's core audience that it's a wonder anyone cares any more.
I, for one, cannot review "The Warmth of the Sun" on the merits of its songs, because it would be painfully redundant to do so. All that exists here are a few classic tracks intermingled with a few obscurities. As a rule (and especially when applied to the Beach Boys catalog), the more obscure the tune, the worse it is, and this collection practically screams that point. So, why would you buy this collection? I don't know. Maybe if you never bought a Beach Boys album in your life, this would be worthwhile, but with 101 other compilations to choose from, I see no particular advantage for this specific collection. Perhaps you are so masochistic that you feel compelled to buy anything that has the band's name attached. If so, I feel so truly sorry for you, as well as your ex-wife, your estranged children and your mortgage company.
Meanwhile, Mike Love is probably sitting at home right now, arranging the next batch of songs for next week's compilation. That can't be healthy for him, so let's do him a really big favor. Let's ban all future recycled collections credited to the Beach Boys. If our goal is achieved, we might force Mike to do something with an iota of creativity attached. Wouldn't that be nice? D- Tom Ryan
Interesting Album.......2007-07-14
This album is not just another collection of Beach Boys Greatest Hits. These are alternate mixes (not remakes) of many of their best-known songs. A few are not quite as good as the original mixes while others are superior. In any case, it makes for an interesting experience, listening to our favorite Beach Boys tunes from a slightly different perspective, sort of like sitting in a different part of the auditorium at a concert. The recording quality is very good throughout. I was not disappointed with this CD.
Lackluster.......2007-07-13
There are very few really good songs on this CD. Most of these songs must have been the "B" sides of thier hit records because neither I nor any of my friends had heard most of them. Even after listening to the CD several times, it still didn't "grow" on me. I real waste of money.

Amazon.com essential recording
If you need some pointy-headed pundit to sell you on the merits of Pet Sounds, your money might be better spent on an ear specialist. Brian Wilson's gift to 20th-century music elevated this pop album into a beguiling musical and emotional cogency that still operates outside pop culture's fickle space-time continuum--and limited critical lexicon. There's never been another record to compare (Rubber Soul, its inspiration, is close; Sgt. Pepper's, its response, misses the point), and certainly no album has been as dissected, overanalyzed, and predigested for public consumption. In 1997 Capitol Records devoted an entire four-disc box set, The Pet Sounds Sessions, to its thorough deconstruction. The techno-marvel centerpiece of that project--the album's first true stereo mix, painstakingly conjured out of multitape session sources by producer-engineer Mark Linett (under Wilson's supervision)--was at once heresy and revelation. Now the label has gratifyingly seen fit to offer both mixes on a single disc (along with alternate versions of "Hang On to Your Ego," the original title of "I Know There's An Answer"), an idea that should please the orthodox and heretics alike. And while the album has always clearly been The Brian Wilson Show featuring the Beach Boys, David Leaf's concise new notes attempt to be more inclusive of a wider band perspective. The result (three of the five band members claim credit for the album title) sometimes resembles Rashomon. If Pet Sounds forever crystallized the band's various creative (in)differences, it also became Wilson's grand karmic joke on his band mates; its burgeoning reputation (Mojo magazine's panel of pop experts once elected it greatest album of all time) guaranteed they would sing its songs--and praises--until the end. And if putting two different versions of the same album on one disc seems like overkill, look at the bright side: it's a perfect excuse to listen to the glorious Pet Sounds twice. --Jerry McCulley

Important, yes, great, no........2007-07-20
Just because something is important doesn't make it great. Look at our current president, important, yes, great, not hardly. Yes this album is good and Brian Wilson deserves praise, but let's not go overboard. Springsteen, The Beatles, and others not only have one, but more than one album better than this. You Still Believe in Me, and Don't Talk sent me running for the phone to call the suicide hotline. These songs don't evoke much if any emotion and are droning. There are some very good songs on this album (Wouldn't if be Nice, Sloop John B, God Only Knows, and a couple others are good) but to be a great album, shouldn't most, if not all, of the songs be great? 2.5 stars.
Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Together, in the Kind of World Where We Belong?.......2007-07-15
Your illustrious Seer is at the beach now. The warm sun and ocean breeze are invigorating. The white seagulls circle overhead (watch out!), and I have been busy all afternoon trying to build a summer sand castle for myself meanwhile sweating to death in this Seer's cape. They said the fabric breathed and would be good in all temperatures. They lied. And, aside from all that, just when I get the sand castle to a stately form, some freckle-faced, red-headed bratty boy comes around and knocks it down. I threatened to report him to The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Seers, however, an ice cream cone made him go away. Dealing with Guido has made me very adept in any situation. Now if only the tides would stop being a threat. Ah well..........
Anyway, I am in the perfect setting to examine the rewards of "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys. Much has been written about this seminal album. And why not? It consistently ranks in the top 10 pop-rock albums of all time. And rightly so if you ask me.
Of course, it wasn't greeted ethusiastically when it came out. At least not as much as their prior hits. Brian Wilson took the hit most of all. Probably unjustly. But time has proven that it was the right move and the right time. To most, perhaps a little early and maybe they would say the wrong time. But I would have to disagree with that. Brian was ahead of everything on the scene at that time. He saw that the music was changing. Plus, artistically, you can not stay in the same place. Artistry needs real growth. Meanwhile, the other Beach Boys needed more hits- and this is why the chasm happened.
But, lets get into this a little more. The Beach Boys were (and still are) the ultimate summer group. Songs about California Girls, fast cars, high school life, requited love, and teen angst, angst, angst. These songs were incredibly successful. But Brian knew that, as he got older, his audience were also doing the same thing. He wanted to try a new direction and add some sophistication. Looking back to 1966, this album is a monumental achievement- and remains so until this day. Sure, some may downplay the importance of this recording, however, that cannot eliminate the fact that it was a monumental change that influenced the musical landscape at that time forever. It is essential, and one of the very best.
But, getting to the main point. Brian Wilson was moving towards greater musical compostion and more adult and inner emotions on record. This was a mega step- and quite a risk at the same time. Most of the music is lush, well thought out, and instruments used precisely to get the right nuances that bounced around in his mind. Certainly the songs are confessional, i.e; "You Still Believe in Me", emotional, i.e, "That's Not Me", "I'm Waiting for the Day", and quiet, heartfelt romance, i.e; "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on my Shoulder)". One must, of course, listen to all the colours and passages in this music. All these songs have a way of revealing certain moods that marry the music perfectly. Beautiful lilting breaks, shifting meter, an array of musical instruments heretofore never thought of in the pop-rock genre. Excellent.
And songs? We are treated to different, but essential, gratuitous hits with "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Sloop John B". But more than this, Brian gives us 2 more considerable high standard gems. Yes. We get to "God Only Knows" which I nominate as the most beautiful song ever written in the course of popular music. Grandiose, glorious- I am fairly convinced that a higher power is somehow behind this remarkable song. Sweet, yearning, beautiful beyond compare. Angelic vocals as well. If anyone doubts Brian Wilson's genius, have them look to this song. Absolutely the highest gem. Then we get to the wispful "Caroline No". Brian reflects upon how time can change a relationship. He looks back to a time when his love was new and exciting and wonders why she changed. "Where is the girl I used to know"? He hurts badly from the change and yearns for a return to a satisfying relationship, knowing full well that it has changed forever. Listen to the end. A train in the distance, approaching at a rapid pace, getting louder, and then quickly passing by. A dog barks in the distance-urging its return. But it gone and then silence. What an incredible conveyence of mood this is for the ending. Superb.
In a way, the outtake of "I know There's an Answer" entitled "Hold On to Your Ego" to me, conveys the frustration Brian was going through in order to have the other members of the group in compliance with his new direction. But he knows he's alone and he knows that he's "going to lose the fight". Well, he may have lost it to them- however- he won the classic album. And we are all so much better that he did.
Now, I must go and make sure that kid isn't planning some new attack on my new home. I don't want to lose the fight anymore than Brian does.
In conclusion- a classic and a must have in any considerable music collection.
Goats say "feed me", Seers say "read me". -- yours, Metamorpho

Glenn Gould.......2007-07-25
I was skeptical about computer-generated sound. This recording added just the right amount of ambience. It is very successful. (There was no reason to eliminate Glenn Goulds "humming"; it obviously helped him to give superior performances, and was part of his authentic style. In any case the original recording of this piece had almost no audible humming sound.)
I was there...and I love the CD........2007-07-05
A friend of mine is a Yamaha piano technician and he got tickets for my wife and I to attend the recording of the Zenph re-issue at the Glenn Gould Theatre in Toronto. It was such a mystical and magical experience, I heard pianists say that "Gould's ghost had walked into the room". The concert was astounding. That's why I bought the CD.
I'm listening to it as I write this and rate it 5 stars.
The classics never die; just reborn!.......2007-06-28
This masterful re-edition allows the new generations may even get closer to what this recording meant in 1955 for the musical universe. It's hard to guess how many listeners became music lovers of this genre, because of Gould was -if I may- the first and possibly the greatest artistic achievement in the history of the music.
These Goldberg meant a true openess and at the same time the most convincing proof the classic music was far to be considered a status issue reserved just for a minory. Besides it illuminated the interpretative flame of many new pianists who understood had became an icon of the instrument and a key force in what Bach's music concerned.
The superb quality of sound is outstanding, and due the fact that 25 years ago Gould left us, we have the suspect there will be mnusch more pleasant surprises of Sonny in what concerns new releases of this genius of the keyboard.
sorry I am in the B. Johnson camp.......2007-06-26
My heart skipped and my tummy got the butterflies when I saw this in Barnes & Noble. I had not heard anything about it. Well I am not a classical music critic, but I know good recordings. Part of the reason is that I've read every one of B. Johnson's reviews. If you are reading this B. Johnson thanks for your reviews, you even got me into Murakami.
That being said I listened to it in Barnes & Noble. The sound quality was stunning. Yet I too did feel something was missing. So lo and behold I came here first chance I get and see the reviews. And of course B. Johnson stated what I felt was true.
So even me a non-expert knew something was wrong.
I am in the camp that thinks something is missing with this recording. Still it is an interesting idea. Hopefully they will continue to experiment and improve this technology.
Beautiful to a listener unfamiliar with original recording.......2007-06-13
I have read several critiques of this "re-performance" claiming that it falls short of the original. While this may be true, I am unfamiliar with the original and find this to be a truly moving and beautiful reproduction. Within minutes of my first listen, I forgot about the technology that made the album possible and found myself captivated by Gould's brilliance.
It's to be expected that music lovers will compare the Zenph performance against the original, but I think listeners should also try enjoying this CD on its own merits. It's a great way for those of us accustomed to high quality recordings to appreciate a great performance of the past.

Amazon.com essential recording
The three-volume Good Vibrations series is designed with the hits-hungry fan in mind. Eschewing a strict chronological approach, the best-of sets are arranged according to charting position. Thus the initial collection is laden with the group's trademark tunes, ranging from the California boys' first top 10 charter, 1962's "Surfin' Safari," to their last, 1988's "Kokomo," a stray, post-Brian Wilson success. "Kokomo" is by far the newest selection included here; nothing else dates past 1966's No. 1 smash, "Good Vibrations." With the likes of "Fun, Fun, Fun," "I Get Around," "California Girls," and the incandescent "God Only Knows" rounding out the set, Greatest Hits Volume 1 is the ideal first pick for anyone looking for the Beach Boys at their commercial peak. --Steven Stolder

Best Beach Boys.......2007-06-04
No need for much analysis here. An excellent Beach Boys compiliation. It's got all of the radio hits, the fun in the summer in the 60s. Maybe that's why "In My Room" and "When I Grow up to Be a Man" aren't here, which is because they're more thoughtful and introspective. Too bad, but what's here is excellent, great ambassador from its era.
Makes You Feel as if You Live by the Ocean.......2007-04-02
This album brings together all the all time favorites from the infamous Beach Boys. The classics like Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, and Good Vibrations are all included in this CD that is guaranteed to get your blood pumping. Its hard to resist getting up and dancing to these wonderful tracks. If you like the Beach boys, you are sure to love this album. Its got all the right tunes and grooves. It makes you feel as if you live right there, ten feet from the beautiful ocean. I highly recommend this album to any person of any age, its safe for kids, another perk of these amazing tracks.
A must-have for BB fans!.......2007-03-08
This has all of the good ones, with awesome sound quality.
The California Girl.......2007-02-23
Great songs from the BEST California 60's group ever! As a Californian, I can listen to these songs and see in my mind's eye the locale where the Boys are singing about. I've been to the beaches and jumped in the waves. I am the California Girl they sing about!
It's givin me good vibrations..........2006-12-29
Just load it up into your jukebox or IPod. If you've never been to Cayucos, CA then you're hopelessly guessing at what these guys are talking about.

The Association will always be best known for their soft rock, romantic ballad, "Cherish." Covered by countless others, including The Partridge Family, it remains a staple of easy listening station formats. The group also had perkier moments, as best captured by the breezy "Windy." But they had other hits: "Along Came Mary," "Never My Love" and "Everything That Touches You" also gave the band significant chart positions. The Association's finer compositions borrowed from the more innocuous aspects of '60s folk rock, fusing it together with their capable vocals. Primarily a fan's record, The Association's Greatest Hits haven't--with the exception of "Cherish," and "Never My Love"--withstood the test of time too well. --Steve Gdula

Good and bad.......2007-06-09
The songs that were hits are just as you remember them. Those that didn't get much air play; well, there's a reason.
Timeless.......2007-05-07
This music still holds up and I listen to it nearly every day. The Association was a great band and some of the songs on it that got very little airplay at the time, are my favorites. Great music, great group, great cd!
Poor sound great group!!.......2007-04-27
What happen to the remastering in this cd???the sound is poor to say the least!!they could of payed a better tribute to a great group like the Association.we fans deserve better than this!!i recommend the Essentials which is remastered!!
A memory of my youth.......2007-03-14
While there are a handful of songs on this CD that are obscure (to me at least); the Cd as a whole is a fine representation of the Association's multi layered "soft rock" sound. Songs like "Cherish" "Never My love" and "Everything That Touches You" take my back to the "puppy loves" of my youth. And who can listen to "Along Comes Mary" or the group's biggest hit "Windy", without gaining a spring to their step. This is a feelgood CD and a must have for collectors of sixties rock.
Nostalgia at its best........2007-02-24
I first bought this album in 1970 as a 8 track. It was great listening then and its only gotten better.
