I am by no standards an expert on music, let alone organ music. I just purchased this CD because I love the sound of the organ, and wanted an album from a mix of artists before I started branching out to single composers. I would also consider myself an audiophile, only listening to high quality music with my portable headphone amplifier and Sennheiser HD-555's. Let me tell you, the quality is perfect, and the music is incredible! Such a full sound, it's *almost* as good as sitting in audience, only lacking the full body experience of organ music. I would recommend this to anybody looking to get a foot into the world of organ music.

I happen to love organ music, even that tacky Saint-Saens
Third Symphony (with which this CD ends and just the third movement).

I grew up with E. Power Biggs, Virgil Fox, et al. and had never heard of Michael Murray (okay, it's been a while). I bought this delightful CD when it first appeared and before Amazon had been invented.

Upon hearing that most famous work with which Murray begins, I confess I was just this side of hysterical -- I was laughing with pure happiness. Murray's take on is it wonderfully over-the-top in the best possible sense. I have a son-in-law who is a musician and, indeed, does play the organ (i.e., if any of them have had pipes, I don't know, but I'm here to tell you, I don't want to hear ANY but pipe organs -- okay, I'm old).

At any rate, to hear this Toccata and Fugue played with such (carefully studied) abandon so tickled me, I called Brian (the son-in-law) and demanded that he listen while I put it on my stereo.

Now I'm going to send it to my son Bruce upon learning last night that he LOVES organ music. Who knew? He's 54 years old, for goodness' sake and never mentioned that little item before.

4 out of 5 stars For those who like BIG organ works.......2005-09-04

This CD concentrates on the big, showy organ pieces that organists love to play. As an organist myself, I find that such numbers are usually more fun to play than to hear. Fortunately, this CD is very listenable, and makes the case for both playing and listening to these works. I'd buy it again; maybe more telling, I'm looking for some of the music, so I can go play it!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Majestic Power!.......2003-07-20

Corey is right - this is an outstanding organ CD, one of the best I've heard. Murray plays some of the largest and most powerful organs on Earth, and uses the reed stops more than the usual organist to produce great effects and a wall of sound that are majestic in the extreme. The selections are all great virtuoso showpieces, and track #6 by Messiaen (Dieu parmi nous from La Nativite') is especially demonstrative of the great contrasts available in a large organ. The horizontal trumpets in this piece are predominant and very bright, contrasting with the snarling bass of the pedal organ.

A word of caution - this CD requires a capable stereo (think subwoofer) to sound its best. Trust me - if you listen to this CD on a good stereo and if you like organ music, you'll sit there with a big grin on your face and tears in your eyes as you listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Performance by Murray.......2001-11-09

This is by far one of the best organ CD's I have ever listened to. The variety is very good overall. From the state trumpets at St. John's to the mighty organ of First Congregational Church, Murray provides nice registration on all of the organs sampled. The Finale from Saint-Saens No. 3 is awesome with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy,s direction. Murray provides his own notes on the organs and the pieces in the booklet that is included. This is some fine organ music!!

The Absolute Sound has been a premiere audiophile rag for decades. If you are one, you already know them. If not, then there is only a small chance their magazine will be useful to you. They have another publication for home theatre, "Perfect Vision" which has far broader appeal these days. SACD is the format for this disk. Many of them are pressed in "hybrid" for use on conventional CD players. SACD is a significant improvement on the CD, which initially promised "perfect sound forever".

Telarc is a particularly high quality label that supports SACD. They have a fine list of recordings that extends far beyond these chestnuts.

To appreciate this improvement you need to have a SACD player. So the best use of this disk is to bring it with you to different audio stores to audition their equipment. Over time it functions as a reference disk, or benchmark, as you compare different sound systems.

Because it has only bleeding hunks of well known classical music, it has little other value unless you are interested in classical music but have little experience of it. In that case it may serve as a sampler to lead you to buy complete recordings of these selections. But again you need the SACD player, which you may already have if you are a jazz or rock audiophile. Otherwise, pass it by.

            Harmonia Mundi has long been recognized as a leader in Baroque-era recordings, and this sampler, from the music recorded for the Harmonia Mundi Bach Edition affirms that stature. Teldec and Hanssler, among others, also offered complete recordings of Bach's music, but in many respects Harmonia Mundi's two dozen or so discs of selected music surpasses those complete works. HM has taken the familiar "historically accurate" approach to performance, and the results are lovely.
            There are arguments over how to divide Bach's music, but for the purposes of argument let's say the music can be categorized as: Sacred and Secular Vocal (cantatas and Masses); Keyboard (including the organ); Chamber; and Orchestral music. Any attempt to present a well-tempered sampler of Bach's work will have to be judged according to it's skill with each area. HM is matchless in it's presentation of the Cantatas; the work of Rene Jacobs and his RIAS Kammerchor is mellifluous and dramatic, while Philippe Herrewheghe's Passions are extraordinary. Lionel Rogg presents what are, arguably, some of the finest interpretations of Bach's Organ Music, and Davitt Moroney--a keyboardist with wide experience with and knowlege of the Baroque era--performs flawlessly on the harpsichord. Other highlights: Jaap ter Linden's work is impeccable, and the incomparable Andrew Manze shines. After listening to this selection, the trick will be to find the CD's from which this sampler was drawn--not an easy task, believe me.

            Los dos discos que Harmonia Mundi ofrecen como muestrario de su edicion 2000 poseen la variedad justa para todo amante de Bach. El comienzo alegre de concierto Nro. 5 se contrasta inmediatamente con la Pasion segun San Mateo para luego escuchar la version para violin de la Toccata e fugue en D menor, con la elegancia que solamente Andrew Manze piede darle. La intensidad que le brinda la Pasion segun San Juan al inicio del disco 2 predispone a seguir escuchando detenidamente este disco, con las ultimas 3 pistas brillantemente elegidas, el motete 229, en donde se nota el estilo de Rene Jacobs, el coral 657 inerpretado en forma magistral por Lionel Rogg y el final con el Sanctus de la misa en B menor, en el cual Herreweghe hace lucir a su Collegium Vocale. Un consejo, prueben escucharlo en Shuffle, sigue siendo puro Bach en su maxima expresion, no importa el orden. Simplemente Bach.

              If the aim of this Sampler is to introduce more people to the magical world of Classical Music, the record company might as well put out a remixed album of pieces by The Ventures!

              Nearly everything about the Sampler seems to be done in a most disinterested manner, right from the misleading and unimaginative cover down to the selection of the performers. It seems unlikely that RCA Victor and BMG do not have a better set of musicians in its stable. There are not even any helpful liner notes and the whole album seems to be aimed at promoting the individual records. In that case, it is unfair to expect the listening public to shell out money and buy this CD.

              I have no complaints about the selection of pieces, for they are all masterpieces in their own right and would appear in any Classical Music selection, although Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi are two of the most glaring omissions (and among conductors, RCA's very own Toscanini is an unpardonable lapse). Ironically enough, both the composers are listed on the cover! There seems to be an undue spotlight on Bach, who has been given three pieces (compared to poor Mozart and Beethoven both of whom had to settle for two). Admittedly, listening to the Brandenburg Concerto after Beethoven's Fifth feels like coming out of the shadows of a dense forest into the bright happy sunlight, but a similar effect could be obtained from Vivaldi's Spring or Beethoven's Für Elise. I would have expected Mozart's Marriage of Figaro to find a place in this collection, but then one cannot have everything!

              Mention must be made of the Philadelphia Orchestra's Blue Danube (under the baton of Eugene Ormandy) and Zubin Mehta's direction of the New York Philharmonic for the Choral which stand out among a collection of mediocre performances.

              Buy it only to assure yourself that your own Classical Music collection is actually superior to the music in the RCA vaults.
