Music for the Underdogs of the Orchestra
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Tuba soloist Harvey Phillips is one of the pioneering great artists on that instrument in modern times, a legend in his own day. If there were a Hall of Fame for bass players, the late Robert Gladstone, Orin O'Brien, Alvin Brehm, and their beloved teacher Frederick Zimmerman, performing here, would be among the earliest inductees. Schuller's Bass Quartet was recorded in 1960, two days after the world premiere in Carnegie Hall. Schuller's Capriccio for Tuba is heard here in a highly expressive, soulful performance by the incomparable Harvey Phillips, and a fine student orchestra under the composer's direction.
