Customer Reviews:
Music from the empire.......2007-06-01
From the 1700s to the mid-1900s, Britian ruled most of the world at some time or another. Part of this experience was the exportation of the English language, English bureaucracy, and the British school system (headmasters, uniforms, standardized testing) to places as disparate as Canada, Singapore, India and Egypt. Yet somehow, music students around the world learn to play Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, or some other continental composer. British music did not get widespread attention until the Beatles. This is surprising given that English composers produced music in ballets, symphonies, overtures, operas and just about every other style and form known. Maybe the reason why is that many locals' first taste of British music was imperial music played upon the entrance of their overlords, or in military parades meant to cower them. Samples of such music are provided in this CD from naxos. Offering works from various English composers from the 1800s to early 1900s, this album leaves out the more melodic and evocative works of English music such as Vaughn-Williams' Greensleeves, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, or Jupiter by Holst. Instead, the focus is on music played at ceremonies, whether they be parades, crownings, burials, etc... The result is a nicely-themed CD that is unique in its contents. The sound quality is great, though the orchestration is only good. For example, title piece of Rule Britannia is played much better on other albums. Note that the works on this CD are pure British; no Irish, Scottish or Welsh influences. Overall, a nice CD to listen to.
The British and their music.......2007-05-30
This CD offers an excellent sampler of traditional British music. If you have watched Chariots Of Fire you will recognize Jerusalem By Parry(the final scene at Harold Abraham's funeral). This is a beautiful selection. The Tam O'Shanter Overture dispells the often unjustified characterization of the stuffy Englishman and is a rousing piece. All in all a very enjoyable CD. Buy it!
A good choice of tunes.......2005-06-29
It is a good choice of tunes played often in England. The quality of recording is good, the choice of tunes is good too and the orchestration is good too. It is a good CD to buy.
A beautiful CD!.......2001-12-16
This one is for all those who want a splendid introduction to the music this CD offers. It would make a lovely Christmas present for the discriminating listener. My favorite is "Jerusalem!"

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Customer Reviews:
More than the sum of the parts........2001-02-04
I bought this as wallpaper music - and got a very pleasant surprise!
Several of the pieces stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and forced me to listen.
Michala Petri demonstrates a masterly control of her instrument and a high level of musicianship in a wide ranging selection of material - from reconstituted Bach to specially composed 20th Century pieces.
Outstanding for me was the Sammartini Concerto: Ms Petri shows a lightness of touch combined with serious enthusiasm and an obvious delight that literally stopped me from working and made me listen. The support given by the Moscow Virtuosi also deserves mention.
Koppel's pieces are fun, as are the arrangements from Grieg and Satie.
Overall, although this could be taken as a glorified sampler... it is much more - there are complete works played intelligently and lighter, throw away pieces you'll want to chase after and listen to again.
A Great First CD.......2000-06-22
After falling in love with the recorder, I started searching for CDs and this was the first I bought. It quickly became a favorite CD. I like the fact that it ranges over a wide period--Baroque to Modern, and showcases the instrument in different settings. The liner notes are quite comprehensive as well. In a word--enchanting.
The sublime collection.......2000-06-18
I must confess up front to being a Michala Petri fanatic. I also play the recorder, although after listening to this album, I feel like throwing my instruments into the nearest dumpster.
Michala Petri is a national hero in Denmark, and a recognized name among classical music fans in Europe, Asia, and Canada. If you listen to this album, you will ask yourself how the music business in the USA can frantically promote "The Three Tenors" while mostly ignoring the genius of this amazing young woman.
This is not your kid's recorder. Ms Petri's complete technical and musical mastery of her instrument transforms the recorder into the equal of other familiar solo instruments, but with its own peculiar sound, penetrating but sweet, that sets it apart.
This album is made up mostly of tracks from her many earlier recordings. Some are transcriptions of well-loved piano miniatures (the Grieg numbers are perhaps more charming here than on the piano, if that is possible); of baroque works for flute, recorder, or strings; of modern recorder music written for Ms Petri by contemporary masters. Some are accompanied by small orchestra and others by Ms Petri's husband, the excellent guitarist and lutist Lars Hannibal. The combination of recorder and guitar is an intimate match made in heaven, and I recommend also this duo's complete album, 'Air'.
Ultimate Collection is Gross Understatement.......2000-03-28
This is by far the best "sampler" I have ever heard. The playing is so superb and the recorder so perfect a vehicle that I found myself listing to too often played pieces like Satie's Gymopedie No.1 as if for the first time. Same for the Grieg. It is very hard to believe these renderings aren't the original intention of the composers. This is a guaranteed winner.

dark beauty.......2002-11-11
Andrew Penny's recordings of Malcolm Arnold's symphonies will go down in history as one of the greatest relationships between conductor and composer ever. Few such relationships have produced such wonderful musical fruit--Boult and Vaughan Williams, Walter and Mahler, Rostropovich and Shostakovich perhaps--but I know of none that can clearly top the work of Penny and Arnold. This disc is clear evidence of the greatness of their mutual endeavor.
Recorded in the presence of the composer, both of these symphonies are allowed to speak for themselves on their own terms. If I had to give one word descriptions for these works, I would say the 5th symphony is beautiful and the 6th is (though still beautiful) dark. Penny allows both pieces the time required to unfold in all their glory.
I have been very impressed by several recordings that I have heard from the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. As their wonderful playing on this disc proves, they continue to emerge as a world-class outfit. The Naxos sound on this disc is remarkable--it is clear, balanced, and has just the right depth for the more haunting moments in the 5th.
I recommend this recording of Arnold's 5th and 6th symphonies wholeheartedly.
Amazingly Satisfying Symphonies Masterly Performed.......2002-08-22
What a find! From the other reviewers one can glimpse the stature of this composer/trumpeter.
Here his talents shine in two symphony offerings. The Fifth certainly illustrates so wonderfully what is charateristic of this composer: intensity of emotion, rhythm, flair for orchestration. Particularly fond of the Andante con moto, which shows his strong Mahler influence, with building anxieties and dissonance outbursts, but especially the peaceful landing with the flute restatement.
The Sixth with its Shostakovich textural undertones shines in the Lento. Here one sees his skill in modern film scores, and the harmonies which delight and tingle.
The Penny led National Symphony of Ireland does a masterful job, with outstanding performances by the percussion and woodwinds.
Great place to start perusal of this man's output. Bargain which has quality sound throughout.
a rare achievement.......2002-06-16
Before I add my own commentary on this disc, I must make a nod to Mr. Hollingsworth's review. He has said much of what I feel about this music. What is left for me to comment on?...The beauty. The sheer beauty. Rarely have I heard such beauty. In his finer moments, Sir Malcolm achieves what few ever have (Mahler, Vaughan Williams, pehaps J.S. Bach). The slow movements of the fifth and sixth symphonies ache with wonder. Yet the work never degenerates into the ear candy that was so prevalent in late twentieth century British Classical music. This recording was made in the presence of the composer. Andrew Penny does and excellent job with the forces of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. The Naxos sound is excellent.
For my part, I eagerly look forward to hearing Mr. Penny's other Arnold recordings.
Fine Renditions of Flamboyancy!.......2001-10-14
The thing I greatly admire about Sir Malcolm Arnold is his everlasting quest to uphold his personal voice. Take the set of English Dances, for instance. I always feel that his orchestration takes that of Ravel a step further in modern music. Therefore, not only is orchestration flamboyant and upbeat, but so does his harmonic language and his musical personality. His sense of rhythm, so relentless and contrasting, add to the overall appeal of his music. Where he could be exhuberant in places, he could otherwise have a great deal of depth in others. No every work of his is a masterpiece, but every work I've heard grasp my attention, often even repeatedly. Make no mistake about it: Sir Malcolm Arnold is a major 20th Century composer.
The Fifth Symphony is to my mind his masterpiece. The first movement is what I mean by flamboyancy. The orchestration is as vivid as Ravel's or Bax's. But listen to the some of the strings and woodwind writings (@ 3:44 - ff especially) and you'll notice a great sense of distinctiveness that's ultimately rewarding. His music (as in the first movement) has the spontaneity as in Walton's. The second movement (andante con moto) can easily stand up well on its own. It is a quasi sonata form. The beginning (with lower strings) has that Elgarian sense of restrained melancholy. But the secondary theme (announced by the flute, mutted strings, and timpani) remainds me of Vaughan Williams with the quiet dignity, vividly supported by the xylophone, but with a subdued sense of magic. The middle movement is more tense and heroic, with some virtuosic brass writings. The secondary theme returns, nicely restrained, and gives the movement a peaceful close. The final two movements are as restless as the Presto, con malizia (second) movement of Walton's First. The Finale is particularly impulsive and the orchestration a bit under Prokofiev's influence. But I admire his use of the first theme of the slow movement, which is even more resounding.
The Sixth Symphony, though not quite a masterpiece, nevertheless holds up well. How often do I think of Alan Hovhannes whenever I listen to the first movement (especially the first two minutes)? Quite often enough, with the jazzy brass and woodwind writings supported by a mysterious mutted strings and double bass and cello pizzicato. But the outcome is more classical than jazz even in the Lento (second) movement. Though not as deep as the slow movement of the Fifth Symphony, this movement is elegaic, somewhat in the Shostakovichian vein. The middle section (@4:44 - ff) again shows Arnold his familiarity of the musical culture of the 1960s. It is aggresive, with the orchestration leaning towards Prokofiev and Tubin (first movement of the Sixth Symphony). The mood subsides and ends the movement as mysterious as a Hovhannes piece. The finale is his typical flamboyant and galloping movement. But why do I find the movement (and its closing) out of tune with the rest of the work? Obviously the first two movements blend jazz, pop music, and classical elements admirably well. But the finale, although well written, is somehow rhetorically empty.
Andrew Penny and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland performed flawlessly. They struck every note perfectly and never risk undermining the vividness behind Arnold's lucid scoring (particularly in subdued, restrained passages). The rendering of the slow movements are particularly well done and nicely restrained. The warmth and atmosphere of the recording under Naxos aid in the overall appeal of the works.
A model recording no doubt.

Malcolm Arnold, like Dmitri Shostakovich, wrote a wide range of music, including music for film. But while Shostakovich's film music is generally looked down upon (having been mostly commissioned by the state), Arnold's film music aspires to the same level of seriousness (and delight) as his "important" works. Most familiar here is the music from The Bridge Over the River Kwai, which features Kenneth Alford's "Colonel Bogey's March." Fortunately these works are all orchestrated by the late Christopher Palmer; they would otherwise likely have languished in obscurity. Fans of Arnold's music will want this exceptional collection. --Paul Cook

A Walk Down Memory Lane.......2007-01-18
I purchased this CD about three years ago primarily for the Bridge on the River Kwai music. I had bought the original soundtrack album very soon after seeing the film (in 1957). The thought of having another copy recorded with modern-day technology made the purchase irresistable. One slightly negative (for me) comment about the music is that this is not a re-recording of the original soundtrack. This is a concert suite arranged by Christopher Palmer. The music is "basically" the same. Mr. Palmer has re-arranged much of it and the sequences of events are out of sync with the original. Apart from these differences the music is still awsome sounding! The other pieces on the disk are all well worth listening to for Arnold enthusiasts. Whistle Down the Wind is charming. The Sound Barrier has that Arnold juxtapositioning of the stern and dramatic with the bubbling and warm-and-fuzzy tunes that he is known for. The Hobson's Choice music has a lot of Arnold's humor in it. Upon first hearing, I thought the music was rather "corny" but repeated listenings have allowed me to find the deeper things in it. The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is pure Arnold from beginning to end. The grandiose London Prelude opening, the tender Romantic Interlude section, the stirring and ominous Mountain Crossing, and the "This Old Man" tune at the end make this piece, as well as the entire album, a joy to listen to. If you are a Malcom Arnold fan and would like a sampling of his film music, this CD should meet your needs very well. Five stars!
Amazing! .......2006-11-16
This music is amazing! I gotta admit that I bought this Cd mainly because of the tracks from "The Bridge on the River Kwai", but all the other tracks are also very good. My personal favorites are "The Bridge on the River Kwai March"( last track of the Bridge on the River Kwai section of this Cd), the Overture/Shoe Ballet from "Hobson's Choice", and the last track on this Cd, the "Happy Ending: Mountain Crossing-the children". That track is one of my favorite pieces of music ever. One comment on the orchestra that is playing it all: They are great. They play really clean, stay on the beat, and I am sure that they play the music just like Sir Malcolm Arnold intended it to sound. The London Symphony Orchestra is doing a great job on this Cd. This Cd rocks and well deserves five stars!
Classic Film Scores.......2001-04-17
Malcolm Arnold's film scores stand on a par with his concert music; they are of equally high quality. Of the five films represented on this CD, the most prominent would have to be the 1957 best picture Oscar winner, The Bridge on the River Kwai. But, having said that, it would at most have to be considered as first among equals, as the other scores represented are also well-done and well-performed. For film score buffs, this CD should be a keeper.
Jolly Arnold jinks.......2001-01-17
This album will be a delight to baby boomers like me who were taken to the movies during the late fifties and sixties to see these films. The films seem a little dated now but the scores of Arnold bring out tear jerking emotion, nostalgic pangs and jolly japes, all in the blink of an eye. The heavyweight David Lean 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' item is probably the movie you are most likely to see repeated on TV; who can forget the defiant and physically broken Alec Guiness standing up to the Japanese Camp Commander? Yet, paradoxically, although the Colonel Bogey March was very popular when the movie was relaeased, it probably will not be the most played item on the CD if you buy it. Arnold's fecund imagination comes into its own with the 'Hobson's choice' with the brilliant orchestral character sketches of the grumpy and drunken Charles Laughton character on the deep brass, or the thrilling optimism as our hero sudenly realises he can make it. The 'Whistle Down the Wind' offerings are sheer musical poetry that underline the pathos we all feel of our lost childhood vision of Jesus and the haunting theme stays in your head a long while afterwards. The 'Inn of the Sixth Happiness' and 'Sound Barrier' items are wonderful and will be enjoyed again and again as Arnold's imagination jumps around the orchestra in its different tones. A brilliant buy!

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the price........2005-10-24
The price of this item suggests something cheaply done. But Malcolm Arnold is a musical genius and his dances are well-performed.
Ear candy.......2004-05-03
This is energetic, colorful, joyful orchestral music. Like the Hungarian Dances of Brahms or the Slavonic Dances of Dvorak, these can be enjoyed one at a time as a brief musical "snack" or all at once.
Full of energy!.......2004-02-06
If you are looking for something with a contemporary sound
with lots of energy then buy this CD. I was listening to
six dance settings by Holst and I fell asleep, then this CD
comes on and Wow! What a wakeup call. The quality of the performance is excellent and the interpretation by Mr. Penny
pleases me. Some of his tempos don't quite conform to the score but the effect achieved is believable. I give four stars because the overall recording level seems a bit low.
Blazing English Dances.......2003-07-04
Malcolm Arnold, famous for his film music (Bridge on the River Kwai), symphonies (many available on the Chandos label), and overtures, is here represented in a very entertaining series of Dances; composed between English Dances Set I in 1950 and the Welsh Dances in the past decade or so, spanning Opus' 27 to 138.
In many of Arnolds' symphonies, he uses many sounds evocative of Mahler and Sibelius, often brooding, creating expansive landscapes with little program associated with the music. With this series of dances, you will find nothing of that. The dances might most closely be associated with a Holst Suite or the Vaughan Williams Folk Song Suite, etc., but that would be doing these works an injustice. Each set is filled with musical pictures of each country they represent.
Each set of Dances follows the form of 1. Fast Movement 2. Scherzo-esque movement 3. Slow Movement featuring a lonely solo wind instrument on melody taken up by the sweeping strings later and 4. Fast Movement.
The outside movements are all gloriously vivacious. They often feature bubbling woodwind sections, tight fast moving brass acclamations, extremely high horn rips, rousing melodies and climaxes to get the blood boiling. These outer movements are truly exhilarating. The scherzo movements are very playful, usually featuring the interplay between woodwinds and strings. The slow movements are among some of the most beautiful written. Obviously taken from folk-song sources, these gorgeous melodies and orchestrations remind one of Grainger and Vaughan Williams.
This CD alone could be bought just for English dances I & II and the Scottish dances (which has the jaw-dropping sixteenth-note triple-toungings and ear-crunching horn-rips). Andrew Penny along with the Queensland Symphony blast through this music, creating a great English atmosphere along with edge-of-your-seat performances. All in all, this recording is great fun and great light British music. Do not hesitate to try this CD, one of the only complete sets of Arnold Dances (check out Chandos at full price) at a great price!

Exquisite Esoteric Flute Masterpieces.......2003-10-01
Alexa Still has a more pleasing tone than some of the other flutists concertizing today and this comes through on the CD. Bravo. I wonder who made her flute because she doesn't seem to have the edgy tone favored by most contemporary flutists. Ms Still's tone is lush and full and her execution flawless. The only complaint I have is her tempo in the Hanson is somewhat languid (but then I can hear every note) I bought this disc because of the Hanson Serenade and the Griffes Poeme (the 1922 version she plays here has a B natural - that she holds - instead of the Urtext's B flat in the cadenza which felt more natural to me 40 years ago). Both the Griffes and the Hanson are somewhat hard to find on CD. But I really like this disc because of the Hovhaness Elibris and the Bloch Suite Modale, both stunningly beautiful pieces of flute music that should be played more often. Two old favorites and two new friends. Also on the disc are Foote's A Night Piece and Kennan's Night Soliloquoy which are not to be sniffed at. With this disc I finally replace my vinyl LP edition of Marice Sharp's "Music for a Golden Flute" (with the exception of the Honneger on the LP). I can understand everyone's enthusiasm for her playing, it is exquisite. If New Zealand can keep her they will be very lucky.
100 Star Review.......2001-06-27
This is the first Alexa Still CD I ever had. Almost have them all now. My musician Mother gave me this CD. It's hard to express in words how I feel about her performance. They say action speaks louder than words. True, because I'm going all the way to Boulder from Austin to have a four hour lesson from her! So this is my 100 Star Review!
Alexa Still - Flute.......1999-12-17
This contains very beautiful flute music by outstanding composers. The songs are contemporary. I very highly reccommend this cd. Alexa Still is a charm to listen to.

Customer Reviews:
An interesting side step.......2007-03-20
This is a 2 CD set. The first CD features Deep Purple doing live versions of some of their album songs.None of it is bad but none of it really anything more spectacular than live material Deep Purple has done on it's other releases. The 2nd CD is live progressive rock with Deep Purple more actively interacting with the Orchestra. It is very intense material with excellent performances by both band and orchestra.
Starting to dig it!.......2005-05-16
Before Metallica, Deep purple was the second band to do an arrangement with an orchestra.(the moody blues the first). At first I didn't know what to think. But, after listening to it a few more times I dig it. Maybe not for the true metalhead. If you like classical music, you'll surely enjoy this one.
Curious.......2005-03-17
I have to admit I have very little knowledge of classical music though I do appreciate it at times. This album always intrigued me even before I actually heard it. Being a fan of Purple for many years I had obviously heard of the album and its reputation as a difficult thing for most rock fans to get into. It's definitely worth a purchase only for fans of the band but at a much cheaper price. The legendary Mach II lineup of the band makes its album debut here and while it isn't a true Purple album, each band member gets to shine in his own distinct way. Even Ian Gillan gets to sing a tiny bit during the second movement. This two disc edition is a much more reasonable buy then previous versions may have been due to the inclusion of Purple's warmup set before the concerto, featuring great versions of "Hush" (the BEST version), "Wring That Neck" and possibly the world premier of "Child In Time" although I'm not as crazy with this version as the 'Made In Japan' (could be my favorite DP song of all-time live or studio). Not for metal fans but for curious Purple fans only. Purple, 1969, Royal Albert Hall and an Orchestra, it doesn't get classier than that. Pretty ironic that their next album would be the absolutely devastating 'In Rock"!! No Malcolm Arnold here!
Why is this Version Cut?.......2004-06-14
One of the more frustrating things about "remasters" is that sometimes they are "re-edits". While this release gives us one more track in the pre-concerto performance ("Hush"), as well as the previously unreleased encore, the editors of this CD have cut more than 2 minutes from the third movement of the concerto!!
While this cut was mainly from the lengthy drum solo, there was certainly enough room on the disc for the full version.
The now out of print import CD has the complete version and sounds equally as good as the remaster.
This "remaster" smacks of revisionist history. For shame!
4.5 Stars.... This Album Exposed Me To Classical Music.......2004-04-29
My oldest sister got the original vinyl album. I was intruiged by the cover (a glorious color photo of an empty Royal Albert Hall) and inside picture (a grainy black and white picture of Deep Purple surrounded by the orchestra in front of an overflowing Albert Hall). When I heard the album, I couldn't quite believe my ears. Here's the orchestra creating beautful sounds, there comes the band crashing in with heavy metal! And it all somehow hangs together!
Recorded 35 years ago, two-thirds of that magical evening is now avaible (still missing: the opener Sixth Symphony of conductor and composer Malcolm Arnold). After the opening symphony, Deep Purple then came on for a short 3 song set (which was not featured on the vinyl album, but is included on the CD reissue). That set is incredible: Hush, the instrumental Wreck That Neck, and the then-still unreleased, unrecorded and unknown Child in Time (explaining why there was no reaction from the crowd when Ian Gillan announces the song).
Last but not least comes the Jon Lord-composed "Concerto for Group and Orchestra". The 1st Movement is still my favorite, because it takes it time setting the table and then magically making the way for an instrumental hard rocking jam by the band, with a blazing solo by Ritchie Blackmore. The 2nd Movement is my least fave of the three, as it is too timid (and reminding me at one point of the Moody Blues, argh!!). The 3rd Movement however is explosive, and includes an amazing drum solo by Ian Paice, only to then go to an incredible explosive final of band and orchstra. Wow!
A year after this album Deep Purple started its string of now-classic albums "In Rock", "Fireball" and "Machine Head". However, the "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" album is just as adventurous in its own right. I "borrowed" the album from my sister, and sure am glad to have it on CD now. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!
