5 out of 5 stars Placido Domingo: Heir To Enrico Caruso's Legacy.......2005-11-12

RCA Gold Seal, its highest quality seal, released this album of Placido Domingo singing arias from Enrico Caruso's career. These arias are the staple of Italian tenor reperotoire and sung by a most virtuosic tenor, can make that tenor famous the world over. Placido Domingo filled Enric Caruso's shoes and is without question his worthy successor. The first aria is "Testa Adorata" from La Boheme, simply stunning in Domingo's hands. He masters Puccini's lines and breathes life to the text. The same applies to the following aria, the melancholy Una Furtiva Lagrima from Donizetti's L'Elisir D'Amore. The high point of this CD has to be Domingo's rendition of "Vesti La Giubba", Caruso's signature aria. Domingo was at one time able to imitate Caruso's technique but in the opera business one cannot be a copycat. Domingo's unique, individualized rendition is a different animal than the Pagliacci's of Giuseppe Di Stefano, Franco Corelli and Luciano Pavarotti. He favors a rich, dark and personally moving tone of singing, as if the attraction is not the beautiful and big voice but the emotional impact of the aria. Pagliacci, having learned that his beloved Nedda has been unfaithful, is of course crushed but he must nevertheless perform that night for the public. "The show must go on". Domingo's portrayal is second only to Caruso's. Des Grieux's aria from Manon's Act 3, Je Suis Seul is yet another introspective aria. Des Grieux has discarded Manon and joined the priesthood at St. Sulpice, foresaking his former life and former love. But he is still haunted by her beauty and fond memories of Manon. Placido Domingo sings French as beautifully or perhaps more beautifully than his Italian. He once again excells in such arias that require melancholy and thinking inward- the same style is used in moments of Aida and Tosca - "Celeste Aida" and "E Lucevan La Stelle". Celeste Aida is on here, and is another treasure in Domingo's vocal chords. He sings Dick Johnson from La Finciulla Del West in a heroic, and thrilling and romantic manner. The same applies for La Dona E Mobile, which is a more deceptive aria because Domingo makes the wicked Duke sound like a good guy. Domingo's voice was always suited to heroic and romantic leads. It is no wonder he was also considered the successor to Franco Corelli, whose own career was experiencing decline when Domingo's was on the rise. Often Domingo had to replace an ill or indisposed Corelli. The aria from Le Cid is thrilling. I'm not surprised that the extremely challenging aria "O Paradiso" from L'Africaine is on this album. Domingo studied difficult arias to sing as if it meant his life. He has no difficulty reaching for the high notes and tessitura in this aria. This is why he was able to sing harder roles like Calaf in Turandot (unfortunately Nessun Dorma is not on here) and Wagner heroes- Lohengrin, Tannhauser, Tristan and Isolde, Parsifal, Siegfried. The aria from Cavalleria Rusticana is a fine example of Domingo's verisimo style and is also beautifully rendered. Caruso sang terrific Don Joses in his career and it's sad that "La Fleur" is not on here. Domingo sang outstanding Don Joses in his own career. But this is a great album to get you hooked into Domingo's style and will definately entice you to seek out full-length recordings of the operas credited on this album.

5 out of 5 stars The Mantle Is Passed: Domingo Is The New Caruso.......2005-07-27

Enrico Caruso will forever be the greatest tenor of all time, and this is even treated as fact by all opera lovers. But when we discuss who succeeded him or what tenor of the 20th century most effectively took on his legacy, it becomes a matter of personal opinion and taste. For me, there is no doubt that Placido Domingo is the successor of Enrico Caruso. This newly released, digitally remastered album from the RCA Label showcases Domingo in fresh young voice singing arias that Caruso sang famously in his own career. It's a great buy at a bargain price. All fans of Domingo should own this recording. The arias are all in Italian, as that was the staple opera dialect that Caruso sang, though there is one aria from Meyerbeer's L'Africaine - O Paradise, which Domingo sings with amazing strength. The other arias include gorgeous renditions of "Una Furtiva Lagrima" from Donizetti's Elixir D'Amor - a melancholy, heartwrenching song which Domingo sings passionately, an aria from Gounod's Romeo et Juliette (also in French) the signature tenor songs Nessun Dorma from Turandot and of course "Vesti La Giubba" from I Pagliacci. Domingo owned the role of Pagliacci, and recordings and a Zefferelli film attest to his fine interpretation. What tenor can do what Domingo has done ? In the 20th century and in recent years, he has proven his versatility and his artistic integrity and incredible stamina. Even in his older years, he has sung (and successfully) Mozart's Idomeneo, Wagner's Parsifal and Alfano's Cyrano De Bergerac.
