In the main, the youthful Beethoven chamber music collaborations between Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zuckerman, and the late Jacqueline du Pré are characterized by broad, liberally fluctuating tempos, ripeness of tone, and a tendency to place expression ahead of stylistic considerations. Zuckerman's sweet vibrato, for instance, seems misplaced in Beethoven's terse, combative syntax (the earlier trios and violin sonatas, for example). Likewise, du Pré's throbbing solo lines impose a late-Romantic patina on the music that some listeners will find more appropriate to Arensky or Glazunov. More often than not, Daniel Barenboim's piano provides the decisive voice, by way of setting tempos and effecting transitions.
While the leaner, more economically expressive Abegg Trio (Tacet) and Vienna Piano Trio (Nimbus) Beethoven Trio offerings better reflect the composer's headlong brio and nervous energy, the Barenboim-Zuckerman-Du Pré team oozes sheer musicality and involvement in every bar. For this reason, one might well prefer Zuckerman and Barenboim's overwrought rapport in the Violin Sonatas to the violinist's tighter RCA remakes with Marc Neikrug at the piano. Du Pré's tragic illness prevented her and Barenboim from tackling the Cello Sonatas in the studio. Happily, their exciting, communicative live 1970 Edinburgh Festival traversals (plus the variation sets) were broadcast by the BBC and captured in excellent sound. So was a touchingly indulgent Tchaikovsky Trio preserved from one of Du Pré's final concerts, included as both a bonus and a memento. Tully Potter's excellent booklet notes give equal time to music and artists, and rightly discuss the performances in the context of their time. It's good to have these recordings gathered in a budget-priced, space-saving box. --Jed Distler

With minor reservations, "excellent".......2004-05-16
As noted above, this 9 CD set resulted from the youthful collaboration of Barenboim, du Pre (soon to wed Barenboim) and Zukerman. Clearly Barenboim is the driving force. As the info booklet asks: "Would Beethoven have approved of what Barenboim does here? Perhaps not, although he would surely have applauded the young man's courage".
Sadly, du Pre's illness (she had MS, forcing her retirement in 1973 and ultimately causing her untimely death) seriously limited the collaboration. Because her illness prevented a studio recording, the cello sonatas are from 1970 live recordings taped by the BBC. The audience noise is distracting, and I simply cannot understand why the coughs and chair scrapings could not have been edited out.
Barenboim and co really do drag out the slow movements; sometimes to good effect, and sometimes too much in my view. For example, the third movement of the Archduke Trio goes for 12:07 on the Naxos recording but extends to 16:02 here (but this one is still a better rendition).
To fill out the last CD, EMI includes Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio Op 50 (taped from a live performance in Tel Aviv in 1972), which is not in the same league as Beethoven's (but I guess they had to do something with the space).
My main complaint is that the thick 3-language info booklet is devoted entirely to the history of the performers and includes not a single word about the music itself!
That said, I am still very glad that I bought this set.

A Lot of Charming Clementi.......2006-11-30
These days, Clementi seems best known for his six Op. 36 sonatinas, which are included in this collection (as disc 12). Long-forgotten is his role as virtually THE first keyboardist who composed exclusively for piano, as well as his later piano-building enterprise. Once deemed Mozart's equal in improvisation by an Emperor, and the editor and publisher of numerous works by Beethoven, this composer of 110 sonatas (think late Mozart sonatas, rather than Beethoven sonatas) is still largely ignored, even after some championing by Horowitz for a time.
This nine disc set, a companion to the nine-disc Vol. 1 also recorded by Pietro Spada, aims to change that and puts forth the second half of virtually everything by Clementi. As such, it is not possible to review all of the music here. Nevertheless, some broad remarks may be made.
First, it should be noted that the discs in this set are also available individually. So if $110 seems a daunting price, one may graze the discs separately. Each runs about an hour. Additionally, there are a number of piecemeal recordings of different sonatas out there, including some by Horowitz. But since there is nothing definitively famous by Clementi, except perhaps his six Sonatinas, there's something very much to be said about having a complete collection by a single performer.
Second, it must be noted that the sound quality is a bit spotty at times. There's a kind of stuffy-nose tone on Disc 11 that can be a bit obtrusive. For example, the op. 34, no. 2 sonata's opening movement sounds suspiciously tinny. Perhaps Disc 11 is not enough to be a deal-breaker for the whole set, but certainly audiophiles will not be able to "hear around it" to get at the admittedly not uninteresting sonatas included on the disc; definitely a shame that these pieces should perhaps go overlooked for that reason, since the Op. 34 sonatas may be precisely the ones Horowitz was referring to when he declared Clementi as sometimes equal to Beethoven at his best.
Musically, Clementi dwells, stylistically and happily, between Mozart and Beethoven, oscillating smoothly from Classical to Romantic (as Beethoven did, but less extremely so). His sonatas are certainly "meaty," and generally run around 15 minutes, with a broad range of pianistic sentiments, expressions and charm. But perhaps what makes them most enjoyable is their liveliness. While self-evidently "Classical era" music, this is not Northern European Classical per se (Mozart, Haydn, early Beethoven); the verve of late Italian Baroque is still very much felt here. It is, more precisely, a Classicism that has not entirely foregone affective musical elements in favor of form.
The music is also, comparatively speaking, very easy to play, while nevertheless being trickier than a lot of Mozart at times. This is one reason it is not much recorded, and certainly not in a complete cycle like this. In fact, the six Sonatinas are best known precisely because countless piano students have essayed one or all of them in their graduating difficulty.
Which brings up one of the most wonderful things about this collection. Spada performs these pieces with an immense degree of good sense. Or perhaps the truth is that this is as far in the piano repertoire as he can go. If so, then thank goodness for it, since it is completely wonderful to hear a pianist not trying to turn these pieces into grand concert hall works by applying warp-speed tempos and a too-precious technique. These are not virtuosos pieces, and needn't be played as such, for the same reason that Bach's tiny Minuet in G Major should not be turned into a virtuoso showpiece either.
This is nowhere so perfectly apparent as on Disc 12, which presents all six of the famous Sonatinas. Presented with grace, simplicity, and all of the charm of a student recital (in the best and most accomplished sense of the word), Clementi's most-played, least-recorded pieces are given a wonderful airing. If, indeed, the Sonatinas are the only pieces you know by Clementi, then the recordings here will not only be rewarding, but might certainly tempt one to check out the rest of his body of work.
Elegance without conceit, charm without gush, simplicity without simple-mindedness--Spada brings out the most elemental, basic joys to be found in music that Clementi himself wrote into his works. One cannot compare him to the titanism of Beethoven's loftiest sonatas, or the structural genius of Mozart, but neither was he aiming for it. There's a sweetness and fanfare to his music that is just plain good-natured, something like the kind of big-hearted humanness in Schubert (with the emotional outbursts in a more restrained register, however). Or, putting it another way, in almost fourteen discs (in Vol. 1 and 2), there are only three sonatas in a minor key.
Overall, while it's easy enough to imagine these many pieces being played better, it's very difficult to imagine them being played more ideally.

The Mozart Sonatas for Piano and Violin.......2006-01-20
I recently spent a memorable evening at a German-Vienesse Restaurant in Washington D.C. which is celebrating Mozart's 250th anniversary. It was in effect a classical music nightclub. Following a German dinner, two excellent local musicians, a pianist and a violinist, delighted the audience with a two-hour performance of Mozart's piano and violin sonatas. With the good dinner, lovely company, and relaxed atmosphere, it was a appropriate and outstanding way to hear these delightful pieces.
The evening inspired me to rehear violinist Henryk Szerying and pianist Ingrid Haebler playing the earlier of Mozart's mature violin sonatas on a two CD Phillips set. The music I heard on the town was drawn from the works on this CD, which is justly renowned. Haebler in particular is an unparalleled interpreter of Mozart. The duo's equally famous recording of the Beethoven violin sonatas is also available on Phillips.
The sonatas on this compilation fall into two groups. First, there is the series of seven sonatas Mozart composed at the age of about 22 while living in Mannheim. These are sometimes called the "Palatinate" sonatas. The sonatas are written in an early classical style and show the great influence of J.C. Bach. In fact, the lovely slow movement of the first of these sonatas, K 296, uses a theme that Mozart probably borrowed from him. There is a tendency to exaggerate the degree to which the piano is the dominant partner in these sonatas. Mozart frequently passes his themes back and forth between the two instruments, and the violin sings eloquently with plenty to do.
Only two of these sonatas, in C major K.296, and D major, K. 306, have three movements. The remaining five works are in two movements. The works typically feature lively first movements with a minuet or variation movement to conclude. They provide a great deal of variety. Only one work, in C major, K 303, opens with a slow introduction to a fast opening movement. The finest of these early works is the two-movement sonata in E minor, K.304. The first movement is a work of true fire, and the trio of the second movement is one of the great, hidden moments in all Mozart. Alfred Einstein describes it as "a brief glimpse of bliss."
The second group of sonatas, both in F major and consisting of three movements, K. 376 and K.377, were composed about three years after the first group and are part of a larger set of six. (The remaining four works are on the second volume of Szerying/Haebler.) These works are more ambitious in scope than the earlier set and show a closer collaboration between the two instruments. Although the works are in the same key, they are markedly different in character. K. 376 is a joyful, extroverted piece with a jubilant first movement, a quiet, singing slow movement, and a whimsical rondo. Its companion, K. 377, is one of Mozart's masterpieces. The opening movement, in a major key, is passionate and disquieting. The second movement is a slow theme and variations in the key of D minor. It is in a mood of deep sadness which only intensifies as the variations progress. The finale, is a rare and bittersweet moment of peace. This work together with the E minor sonata discussed above are two buried masterpieces in Mozart's output. Einstein says of the finale to K. 377 that it is the "only one of this kind not alone in Mozart's time, but among all the music that has come after him as well." In addition to the sonatas, this CD includes a set of galant and spirited variations on a French song, K. 359.
I enjoyed the spontaniety and ease of hearing these works performed informally, delightfully, and atmospherically over dinner. But I enjoyed as well the opportunity to hear this music repeatedly at leisure and in private in order to explore its beauties in detail. This is a first-rate CD for those who love Mozart or chamber music.
The quotations above are drawn from Alfred Einstein's famous study "Mozart, His Character,His Work," pp.255, 257.

Gems hidden in the shadows of Mozart's larger works.......2005-03-19
With Mozart's middle and late sonatas for violin and pianoforte, he (along with Haydn) changed the interaction of instruments and made it more of an equal partnership and dialog - freeing the violin from the role of mere accompaniment. In nearly all of Mozart's "great" violin sonatas (K296 and up), there indeed is a wonderful dialog between the two instruments in a way that only Mozart can bring forth in all its lightness and charm. This genre of Mozart does seem to be underrated - most likely due to the sheer volume of Mozart's monumental works. Yet, these works are highly enjoyable, musically intelligent and particularly easy to listen to with their timeless, graceful melodies.
The partnership of Szeryng and Haebler was renowned during their time and this marvelous collection is evidence of that. Music author David Dubal says of the Austrian pianist Ingrid Haebler: "An artist who plays with polish and taste. Her Mozart is especially admired for these qualities. Her playing has refinement and geniality, as well as a special tone quality." Agreed. It is hard to fault much when the music is so well performed and so typically pleasant Mozart - with that galante, gentile, youthful bounciness. Along with legendary Mozartian Grumiaux, violinist Heinrich Szeryng plays these sonatas with the optimal galante spirit of Mozart's era without superimposing any personal stylistic or "Romantic" mannerisms. Rightly, Penguin Guide honored this historic effort by giving it a top 3-star rating as well as listing it as one of their "Recommended Recordings" (for building a collection). The only negative I found is the "weak-bodied" sound quality of the 1970's analog transfers as compared to better modern recordings. But, not a "show-stopper" like some historic recordings can be.
Philips has distilled the best of Mozart's 35 sonatas for piano and violin into the most mature 16 on two DUO sets of two CD's each. So, does one need to hear all 35 sonatas? Probably not as the early ones (1-16) were written by a "tween" Mozart for their early prodigy tours and are not near the stature of those written 10 years later and beyond. The sontatas here in Vol.1 tend to have that carefree, innocent, bouncy Mozart style where the late works on Vol. 2 are more mature in form, style, complexity and virtuosity.
Also, with the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth in 2006, look for a slew of new Mozart recordings of the violin sonatas from the likes of Anne-Sofie Mutter, Hilary Hahn along with period-violinists Rachel Podger and Andrew Manze (but there were quite mixed reviews of all these newer recordings). Each of these newer virtuosos brings a different "flavor" to these classics that some will admire more or less. But the older generation of legends like Arthur Grumiaux and Hienrich Szeryng have set a very high standard with their impeccable galantry, eloquence and definitive, graceful Mozartian spirit. A classic recording like this one by Szeryng and Haebler is timeless in its musianship and appeal, but it is rewarding as well to hear the newer talents. Out of these, my pick would be the pristine-toned Hilary Hahn with Natalie Zhu.
Delightful! A must-have for any Mozart collection........2004-09-20
The Violin Sonatas should more accurately be called Sonatas for Violin and Pianoforte. They are some of Mozart's most vibrant and inventive works, and I've never been able to comprehend why they aren't better known. Just listen to the sound samples - you'll be hooked right away.
This is the best recording you are going to find of these works. Ingrid Haebler plays with the light-hearted, Germanic spirit that is so essential in these pieces, and the legendary Szeryng is in top form. There is so much humor and personality from both performers, and every hearing of these pieces will bring new insight. This CD should be at the very top of every "Essential Mozart Recordings" list out there.

Customer Reviews:
Not quite there!!!.......2002-04-06
These performances are just average!I have recordings of heifetz on tapes and they are great.I have also the exquisite performances by Perlman and Ashkenazy, perhaps the best! Here Kremer and Argerich (individually they may be great!)do not seem to be combining at all.added to this the flow of the music is interrupted by quixotic changes in tempo and dynamics.just not inspiring.Particularly the SPRING sonata is a big let down. Here Perlman and Ashkenazy combine perfectly to give a soaring lyrical reading.Just matchless!i would recommend The perlman and Ashkenazy as the best choice for these sonatas.
Stunning, enlivened presentation.......2001-09-05
Two soloist who perform well together (perhaps one of the best pairings in modern recordings) are Argerich and Kremer. Both are strong musicians, and often they can overwhelm others who are less competitive about their music. Not that these two compete with each other for supremacy. Instead, they blend their aggressiveness, producing lively, full-bodied performances where piano and violin challenge each other, then submit gracefully to the other's lead. This is Beethoven as you'd expect/want it to be played -- dramatic, bold, but then a little softened, coaxing out the pretty parts. The Spring and Kreutzer sonatas, probably the best known, are gems of this collection. All ten sonatas are included (which are also available on separate CDs but the whole collection is much more economically priced!). Listening to all ten is a journey through Beethoven's chamber music. Don't miss these performances!
GET THEM!.......2001-04-17
If I could have two choices of music to have on a deserted island, this would be my second choice. Turandot with Mehta conducting would be the first. Kremer and Argerich play these Beethoven Violin Sonatas with so much passion, joy, and drive that I am completely dazzled. They show me a brilliant universe which I have rarely experienced.
Kremer and Argerich play all the tracks of the four CDs except for three on the 2nd CD. Menuhin and Kempff play variations on theme of The Marriage of Figaro and Rondo in G major. And on third track Garret and Canino play Six German Dances.
An 85-page booklet comes with the set. It describes the pieces in an academic manner.
Wow..........2000-12-13
I am pained to admit that I have (up until now) only heard Gidon Kremer performing contemporary pieces. I have truly been missing out. Kremer's performance on this boxed set is impeccable - even the die-hard Beethoven fans will be pleased with his work on this album. Unlike the recent Mutter recordings of the sonatas, Kremer performs the pieces much as Beethoven intended (which in my mind is a better way to go than what Mutter did). I highly recommend this.
Review from Gramaphone.......1999-03-27
I havn't actually heard these recordings but from the review #6-8 recieved in Gramophone, they probably exceed or match any other recorded performances of these wonderful works. Gramophone wrote: "the 3 sonatas are irresistibly lively and individual spirits in the hands and imaginations of Agerich and Kremer."
Gramophone goes on and on raving about these performances of excellent musicality and ensemble playing. In their "Classical Good CD Guide 1999" they a two out of three G's (What they use instead of stars), tied for highest with Heifitz. I am planning to but these records myself very soon once I have some extra $ for them.

Phillips Gets It Right, Best Version Available.......2001-05-01
Perhaps I'm a little over opinionated, but I have not always agreed with Phillips' choice of artists for Mozart. Mitsuko Uchida should be lucky to ever play one phrase on the piano as well as Alfred Brendel, yet, they both appear on the Phillips label. However, this collection is an entirely different story. I am not really a fan of the early mozart on the disc, but as the performances go, fine. The jewels are contained in the last four discs. Arthur Grumiaux and Walter Klien are intoxicating. These two have great artistic sensibility, and their chemistry is ideal. Since I can't have Mr. Klien over to my house, I often grab my violin and play along to this collection, much to my neighbors' consternation. This is pretty high praise, you say? Especially when a Itzhak Perlman edition exists? Good point. The Perlman could have been the best, but guess who the accompaniest is? (Gag) Daniel Barenboim. Deutches Grammaphon got half the equation right. My guess is that Perlman has a friendship with Barenboim, and so he is kind of stuck with him. And so, I can't give this collection 5 stars since the possibility still exists that Perlman will rerecord with a qualified artist. Also, the digital recordings are pretty early, and so you will find a little of the expected harshness. But don't let this deter you. Trust me, the cover may be one of the silliest you've ever seen (Did they get that violin from a vending machine? Nice tuners.), but inside awaits pure joy.
Pure Mozart goodness.......2000-04-18
I recently got this 7-disc set from the library and to say I'm pleased with it would be a gross understatement. The performances are wonderful, and the sound quality just right. The first disc is just pieces that didn't fit under the standard violin sonata criteria. They are from all periods of Mozart's life and are nice enough, although most remained incomplete until after his death. The next two discs are very early Mozart, as in when he was 6 years old to about 10 years. As simplistic as they are, it's still amazing that the young Mozart can produce music of this caliber. It's pretty much baroque/Italian style music with the harpsichord and violin but it's good enough. Things really get cooking when you get to the last four discs though. These are mature Mozart pieces and it shows, as each track practically glitters with brilliance. The set ends with the marvelous K. 526 sonata. Even at the rather high price, this is still an excellent set, and a very good addition to the Complete Mozart Edition
