5 out of 5 stars Lehar from the Source.......2003-10-31

The Dutton label has done a wonderful service to the classical music buying public by making available historical recordings of composers conducting or performing their own works -- first Prokofiev, Milhaud and Strauss, and now Franz Lehar. These performances, of surprisingly good recording quality from 1947 (a year before the composer's death), of course showcase Lehar's signature compositions the "Gold and Silver" Waltz and "The Merry Widow" Overture. (There are actually two versions of the Overture featured here, with the second being the disc's only selection from a 1940 recording session.) But also presented here are lesser-known works, Waltzes and Overtures, which are equally first-rate. Because these are mono recordings, serious Lehar fans will probably want to find another CD in stereo. I recommend Boskovsky's accounts in the budget-priced EMI Encore series. However, those same Lehar fans would be remiss in not getting renditions directly from the source.

        5 out of 5 stars Glorious!.......1999-12-01

I am so happy to see these superb performances are finally reissued! I have some of the selections on original 78s and sound was quite good for their age, but the remastering here is excellent. And what a sound Lehar coaxed out from the Swiss orchestra! So creamy and juicy, just like the Vienna Philharmonic at their best. The performance here is like the personification of the old Vienna that was already a thing of past back then. The composer's loving and nostalgic performances are absolute must for people who loves Lehar's music. Enjoy these intoxicating performances from the bygone era!

5 out of 5 stars The best Lehar CD to own.......2004-11-22

Who doesn't love the idea of hearing Lehar conduct his own waltzes and overtures?

Fortunately, unlike some composers (like Grofe), Franz Lehar is an adept conductor, and he gives his waltzes the Viennese sparkle and joy that makes them all so darn good. A particular favorite is the first waltz from "Eva" - you may have never heard it before, but it's one of those things you could just swear you've heard before.

All the music is gorgeous, though the overly long Musical Memoiren is repetitive. The "You Are My Heart's Delight" aria from "Land of Smiles" appears in the overture and just melts my heart...and everyone knows the gorgeous "Merry Widow," here given a masterful performance.

But you probably are eager to buy the music - the question is, what's the sound like? The digital remastering is as good as it possibly could be, and my hat's off to David Lennich and Graham Newton, the digital magicians: there are no snaps, crackles, and pops, and no hiss in the background. If you turn up a volume a little to compensate for the "Digital Noise Reduction", it sounds years younger than it is.

There's no better way to experience the waltzes and overtures of Franz Lehar than to hear these surprisingly good-sounding recordings of the old man himself...and, although there are two other "Lehar conducts Lehar" CDs on the market, this is the one to buy: they all have the same music (and, in most cases, they are the same recording!) but this CD is cheapest of all.

        Enjoy!
