Vivaldi's treasure trove of twenty-four concertos for cello is represented here by a luscious six, and played exquisitely on authentic instruments. The Academy of Ancient Music, with director Hogwood also at the harpsichord, brings its usual signature joie de vivre to these works, and with such a perceptive, subtle and talented cellist as Christophe Coin, this collection is a beauty. The concertos themselves, most written during the 1720s, the latter part of Vivaldi's life [1678-1741], are winning creations, replete with stunning lyricism, rhythmic verve and ceaseless invention. And with the inclusion of four minor key compositions that air the composer's frequently repressed introspective nature--- making the slow movements all the more poignant--- listening becomes a special treat. The combination of Vivaldi's splendid music, playing of the utmost sensitivity and finesse, and gorgeous recorded sound, makes this CD absolutely self-recommending.

Amazing Collection, Amazing Ensemble!.......2006-03-30

This set is an absolute gem, and for two reasons: First, because it is so rare and hard to come across; Second, because the quality of the music is at such a high level. This 5 CD SET ought to be part of every collection of fine music. Christopher Hogwood is one of the finest conductors of Baroque music that I've ever heard. The included rendition of Corelli's "Christmas Concerto" is the best recording I'v heard. As well, this set includes the complete "Four Seasons," which, while not exceptional, are quite satisfactory. This is a must own set for high quality recording collectors.

TIMELESS BOUNTY.......2003-04-03

Under Claudio Scimone's fine leadership, and with an ensemble as expert as I Solisti Veneti, Galway has never sounded so selflessly persuasive nor so charming as here in these six colorful flute concertos of Vivaldi [1678-1741]. With obvious devotion, his talent completely at the service of music and composer, he immerses himself, drawing fully on his emotional palette to create performances vividly imaginative and alive, yet also tender and wistful. Needless to say, Vivaldi's invention is bounty waiting to be tapped. Each concerto has individuality--- a personality, if you like--- and an allure that is hard to resist. No monotony exists anywhere here. Textures are rich, melodies sweet, design striking and effective, especially in the timeless, ethereal beauty of the slow movements. Galway relishes these bits of heaven, and it is a pleasure to hear him so rapt. Praise as well to Scimone's careful attention to detail, and to I Solisti's caressing warmth, all of which gives the greatest of pleasure.
