Album Description
While other genre labels like Narada and Windham Hill diversified from their new age roots, Real Music has been consistent over the years in providing nothing but the best music for relaxation, meditation and spiritual enhancement. Their most notable recordings come from an Eastern Buddhist mindset, with multi-instrumentalist Karunesh leading the pack on the strength of previous discs Zen Breakfast and Nirvana Café. His basic approach to contemplative music involves a blend of exotic textures (bells, chimes, Tibetan bowls, sitar and Chinese instruments) with easy grooves and rich walls of ambience. The new collection's trance inducing instrumentation and sensuous rhythms begins with a few minutes of pure ambience and sitar, before slowly introducing a gentle percussive line ("For the Joy of It All"); Avinash's graceful Indian violin carries a mournful beauty that is also part of the similarly hypnotic, easy grooving "Monsoon's Dance." Bikram's Bansuri flute floats through beautifully in key locations, such as the introduction of "Mount Kailash." While the uninitiated might feel that there's a certain repetitive nature to the tracks (which usually begin with sparse instrumentation before the electricity is turned on), the intention is more to invoke a sense of inner peace than to be truly innovative. The title of the richly textured "Zensual" sums up the mystical intent of the thought provoking exercise.

The pleasure in the feeling of non-existence.......2006-05-28
I heard the song "Monsoon Dance" on sky.fm. I previewed other songs and then bought almost all songs. Others are fine too, just listened once.
It's been 4 days since I bought them. I am not listening to any other song than Monsoon Dance for almost 4 days, day and night.. I am usually obsessed with these kind of mystic songs, listening to one song at a time for days a stretch, even when I sleep.
Thats the effect of the song Monsoon Dance. Truly, the mystic feeling of non-existence is an amazing pleasure. I feel one with the entire universe when I listen to this song.
I wonder what the composer might have gone through to come up with such an amazing piece of music. The Indian violin's effect is rather deep.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.......2006-03-10
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I have every heard. I bring it everywhere when I need to relax. The sound of the instruments from India are just breathtaking.
This is great!.......2006-01-12
....if you like really strange, annoying German people who try to go "native." This is nothing but commodified exoticism; music for spiritual enhancement my arse....
Masterful & mystical "new age music" from KARUNESH .......2005-09-23
I discovered the music of this German-born composer/multi-instrumentalist by accident. I was browsing in the new age music section at a certain mega-bookstore, looking for the latest CD from Kitaro (one of my favorite artists.) Well, I didn't find the Kitaro disc that day, but another CD soon caught my eye, one by an artist I'd never heard of - "Call of the Mystic" by Karunesh. Curious about the cover-art and song titles, I put the CD on the store's headphone listening station. I was soon immersed in the music, and intrigued by its exotic sounds. Of course, these were only brief sound clips from the album, so as each snatch of music soon cut off, I was left wanting to hear more. I then came home, found the CD on Amazon, and ordered it (sorry to the bookstore, but your prices were just too high! : ) Anyway, to make a long story short, in the several months since then, I have become a major fan of Karunesh (pronounced "Care-un-ish", which is, I learned, also the sanscrit word for "compassion".) I have now also collected several titles from his extensive back catalog, and while all of his albums have their own strengths, I believe that "Call of the Mystic" still rates as one of his finest overall releases. With it's mystical/mysterious feel, warm synth textures, and heavy use of exotic instruments, this CD literally makes me feel better when I listen to it. I know that the term "healing music" is probably overused in this genre, but in this case the term really fits. It's one of those rare albums that somehow pulls the listener into its World, and transports them to a better state-of-mind for it's duration. (Kitaro is perhaps the only other new age artist who's work has this effect on me.) Like most of Karunesh's works, this album is fully instrumental (So those of you who do not like vocals/lyrics with your new age music will be particularly pleased!), with all of the tracks running in the 5 to 7 minute range (a good length for this type of music.) Now, as people usually like points of comparsion for reviews such as this, I would say that Karunesh falls into the same general "new age/instrumental/electronic" genre as Kitaro, Vangelis, or Patrick O'Hearn (although his music's rarely as gloomy as O'Hearn's can be.) However, comparisons can tend to be a tad misleading, and at the end of the day Karunesh is a unique artist who's music has a personality of its own...Here is a quick rundown of all the tracks: the album opens with "The Joy of It All", an Eastern-flavored track which benefits from a hypnotic percussion groove and the sitar work of special guest Govi (a respected new age artist in his own right.) "Hearing You Now" features piano/flute lines that rotate back and forth, and an ear-catching mix of both electronic & acoustic drumming. "Monsoon's Dance" gives us one of Karunesh's most memorable melodies, played with a gorgeous blend of piano, Indian violin, and synth/percussion backing. "Mount Kailash" has a deeply-spiritual feel, and is highlighted by another guest spot from Govi (this time playing what sounds like an acoustic guitar run through a digital delay effect...quite a beguiling sound, actually!) "Sunrise at the Ganges" is basically a sitar/flute duet set over a backdrop of synth chords and Indian-style drumming. "Zensual" takes on a darker, electronic tone, with some mysterious "reed"-like synth soloing, layers of keyboard ambience, and a sensual rhythmic groove. "And the Grass Grows by Itself" adds some contrast to the pevious track, based mainly around acoustic sounds and a fun, hopeful melody. This track also features the hum of a Tibetan singing bowl (an unusal sound that I have come to like.) Lastly, "Ancient Voices", the only track with no noticable percussion line, is made up almost entirely of sitar and woodwind sounds, and serves to end the album on a peaceful, contemplative note. All in all, this is an album (and artist) that should not be missed if you are a fan of new age music. I will have to agree with what another reviewer said about Amazon's soundclips, though. The brief clips here are all of the opening moments of these songs, before the main themes really kick in - so the CD really does need to be heard in its full context to be truly appreciated. Also, speaking of other reviews, I think it is quite remarkable that of the six customer reviews that have been posted of this CD thus far, EVERY single one has given it a perfect 5 stars!...Amen!
Call of the Mystic~Karunesh.......2005-07-10
Even though this is my first experience with Karunesh, this album was exactly what I expected,...and I enjoyed the different selection of instruments used to evoke a light, whimsical, and meditative feeling of calm. Recommended for light meditation, yoga practice, or massage therapy.

Alan Hovhaness and some very big friends.......2007-02-04
This is a brilliant work combining the compositional artistry of Alan Hovhaness with the music from the orchestra of the sea, the great whales themselves. To be listened to over and over again as there are always some new nuances that won't have been heard on previous visits.
M.M. version mediocre; St. Gregory performance Excellent........2006-07-21
Of the two pieces I care most about on this recording, my ears received them very differently.
On a positive note, the performance of St. Gregory's Prayer is transcendentally beautiful... liquid joy... outstanding.
I'm less enthusiastic about the Seattle Symphony's reproduction of the Mysterious Mountain here. Perhaps I am biased in favor of Fritz Reiner's Chicago interpretation, having heard that many times first. Regardless, I think a lot of listeners would have to agree with me that this Seattle production truly rushes through the suite, barely sampling the incredible potential of the composition. They simply move through it much too fast. So much of the power of Mysterious Mountain is intimately linked to its cadence, and to rush a piece like this is to drain it of most of its glory. The rendition excels technically, but the spirit comes out flat.
St. Gregory's Prayer is worth the purchase of this disc, but for a better Mountain, get the Chicago recording.
As for Great Whales, there's something good in hearing a symphony with the Pacific Ocean at its doorstep waxing Cetacean. Unfortunately this poetic justice does not suffice to make this piece worth frequent listening. It does succeed as a curiosity and a nice jog of the ear if you've fallen into a rut.
Entering the Realm of Alan Hovhaness.......2006-06-16
Like other reviewers here, I flipped on the radio one night & caught the tail-end of "Mysterious Mountain" and was thunderstruck by the beauty pouring out of my speakers. I strained to catch the name of the composition and the composer: Alan Hovhaness...Mysterious Mountain. That night was a revelation to me and the beginning of my explorations into the musical realm of Mr. Hovhaness. Several CD's later, I still return to this one. All of the selections here are wonderful with the possible exception of the composition, "And God Created The Great Whales"... I have never been able to latch onto that one, but that is just me. Otherwise, this CD is absolutely superb; the music is richly textured and satisfying. Highly recommended.
A Stimulating Hovhaness Sampler.......2006-05-04
Boy, it's amazing how different sets of ears hear things differently! I was just musing on the purity of sound that the Seattle strings are able to produce on this disc, nimble and without the heaviness that some more famous string bodies under certain conductors (say, Philadelphia under Ormandy or Sawallisch) would proffer. And I was further thinking that Delos' clean, clear recording was a big help, especially in the "Prayer to Saint Anthony," where the lonely sound of solo trumpet is etched against the accompanying strings. Then I read the comments by others on this page and am amazed to read that some think the sound on this disc "tinny...muddy." Obviously, I don't agree.
As to the performances, Schwarz seems to me a master Hovhaness interpreter, as other performances from Seattle and elsewhere have proved. I, too, recall the classic recording of "Mysterious Mountain" with Reiner, and I think Schwarz yields nothing to Reiner in terms of depth of feeling or any other musical criteria. Schwarz's is a lovely performance, with all the required mystery and majesty of this seminal piece intact.
In other hands than Hovhaness's, "God Created Great Whales" could have emerged as a one-trick pony of a piece. I happen to think that Rautavaara's "Cantus Arcticus," mentioned by at least one other reviewer, comes far closer to this downfall. I find that Rautavaara's music is no more or less interesting than, nor does it shed special light on, the recorded bird sounds in his piece. As you can guess, I'm not a great admirer of the Finnish composer. But Hovhaness manages to mirror the sounds of the whales, in both the strings and brass (hard feat!) in such a way that we come to appreciate the remarkable communicativeness of these great beasts of the sea. At least I do. Plus, the technique that Hovhaness employs--a rare foray into aleatory music--is in the service of the work's program: the emergence of the earth from primordial chaos.
Of the other pieces on this disc, I find "Prelude and Quadruple Fugue" the most memorable. A dry, pedantic name perhaps, but not a dry piece: the fugue manages to be both very traditional and very modern, which is true of Hovhaness's best music. As I say, Schwarz, Seattle, and Delos all do Hovhaness full justice on this CD.
Hovhaness Is An American Original.......2006-03-27
Alan Hovhaness is probably one of the most underrated, unappreciated composers this country has ever produced. How unappreciated? I've been a passionate lover of classical music for fifteen years, took a few courses in my undergrad years on music theory and the history of music in the West, have been a season ticket holder in more than one city's philharmonic/orchestras, and it was not until about five years ago that I heard of Hovhaness--and even then it was only because I so happen to listen to his Symphony No. 2 (`Mysterious Mountain') on a local public radio station during classical music hour.
The first time I heard `Mysterious Mountain,' I almost mistook it for Dvorak or Smetana. Hovhaness might have lived in the 20th century, but his compositional approach and philosophy was very much in the mold of the 19th century romantics. It is grandiose in style, haunting and yet beautifully majestic in sound, and it never ceases to amaze me every time I listen to it.
The remaining pieces of music, particularly the Prayer of St. Gregory and Alleluia and Fugue, betray Hovhaness's earlier work as a composer of music (and organist) for the Armenian Church. It surprises me still that more of his music is not played, although he is best known for Mysterious Mountain (a symphony that was composed and premiered in 1955). This CD itself is an excellent addition to any classical music collection and a must for anyone wanting to discover more about American composers.

Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08
Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.
Il Postino (Le postier).......2007-02-01
Excellent album. En plus de la musique originale du film, plusieurs lectures de poëmes de Pablo Neruda par des acteurs et actrices de renom, sur fond musical.
True Romantic Cd - www.michaelpalmer.net.......2006-12-18
If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.
lovely!.......2006-09-07
The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.
WHAT DID THEY DO?!.......2006-04-01
What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

Don't You Ever Give Up!.......2004-12-02
I can't say enough about how much I love this album. The CD has been in my CD magazine since I bought it over a year ago.
Not only are the songs inspirational but the album lives up to its title "Soul Symphony". Take a listen to songs like "Real True Love", "Children of God", "Trouble is my Home" and the title track and enjoy not only the message in each song, but also the music! It is so reminiscent of 70's soul.
Their cover of Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" almost surpasses the original (I say "almost" because Mr. Clapton composed the tune so it belongs to him). I also love "Brighter Day" and "Don't You Ever Give Up" will make you smile and wanna dance!
I am a little biased as I am a faithful lover of Sounds of Blackness' music. I recommend it to soul and urban gospel music lovers alike. Enjoy it!
'Encompasses the vast spectrum of black music!.......2003-02-15
Not since 1996's "House of Music" from Tony! Toni! Tone' has an album covered the black sound in such a musically satisfying fashion. This is one production that pays homage to the past while adding rhythms and beats that can be appreciated by contemporary audiences. Much more eclectic than the group's last release, "Reconciliation", this "symphony" is a history lesson in African-American music from traditional slave songs to the bass-laden tracks of modern hip hop.
As one goes from cut to cut, the listener is taken to a place of consciousness and reflection, as well as nostalgic bliss, which only music can give. The songs, many written or co-written by group founder Gary Hines, are spiritually and morally uplifting.
The group's tradition of interspersing excerpts from historic spirituals continues in the form of four "sweet" suites.
The bulk of the album, however, shows the versatility of the group and the lead vocalists bear remarkable similarities to legendary greats of the industry. One thinks of Aretha or Natalie or even Jennifer Holiday when hearing the soulful cuts "Don't You Ever Give Up" or "Real True Love", both with group member Yulanda helming the lead. Shades of James Brown's "This is a Man's World" resonates in "Trouble is My Home". "Another Day" appears to be lifted from the R.Kelly songbook and does him proud. Stevie's influences can be felt in "Don't Give Up with leads Billy Steele, Yulanda (again), and Darius Ewing sounding extremely "WONDERful". Sly and the Family Stone are honored with "Children of God", a funk-driven track with a definite message for modern times.
However, two of the strongest cuts are remakes: the Pointer Sisters' "Yes We Can Can" and Eric Clapton's Grammy-winning "Tears in Heaven", the latter with a guest appearance from Ron Winans. "Tears", a classic in its original form, is given the full gospel treatment here and should become of the group's most requested concert tunes.
The Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences would be sorely in error should it avoid recognizing this album come NEXT year. "Soul Symphony" is, without a doubt, the BEST ALBUM of 2002, bar none.
Great CD!.......2003-01-09
Another great CD from Sounds of Blackness. Run out and pick this up today! The single "Don't you ever give up" is one of the groups best ever.
Illmatic.......2003-01-07
This album is blazin from start to finish. You gotta add this to your collection. One of the best releases in years.

Album Description
There is a wonderful new world of sounds for dogs to discover - classical music blended with nature sounds - a calming combination that will soothe and delight dogs and their owners. The Mozart CD will entertain and relax dogs while they are at home and reduce their separation anxiety and hyperactivity while their owners are away. We've carefully designed our products to improve a dog's quality of life - and their owner's life as well.
Did you know that classical music has healing benefits not only for adults, but for dogs as well? A 2002 study published in the journal Animal Welfare detailed the reactions of dogs to different types of music. The results were clear. Dogs overwhelmingly spend more time in a relaxed state when exposed to classical music: they rest more, bark less, and are calmer when people come to visit.
There are also sounds in nature - babbling brooks, ocean waves, rainfall, songbirds and tranquil night sounds - that naturally soothe dogs. Our CDs skillfully blend these soothing sounds with superb classical compositions. The result? Dogs get the maximum healing benefit when their owners play one of our CDs.

Great for the dog groomers too !.......2006-07-26
"As the owner of a grooming shop I found that the Dog Gone Classical Music Mozart CD for dogs not only helped relax the dogs but it also had the additional benefit of creating an atmosphere of calmness for the groomers."

Great for babies too!.......2006-06-24
We listened to Dog Gone Classical Music the other day with our 11 month-old baby and he just loved it. The nature sounds were so soothing that he almost fell asleep. The bird calls and running water are particularly relaxing; I think most babies - and adults, too! - would love this CD, along with dogs, of course. And we all know that classical music is good for babies' brains. Recommended, even if you don't have a dog!
DOG GONE IT.... Love it!.......2006-06-09
And so does my dog! Not only is the music calming for my dog, but the nature sounds bring the great outdoors - inside - for my dog to enjoy. It's a winner!

One of those Collection CDs that Merits Adding to the Library!.......2006-09-24
Often pasted together excerpts on the basis of a theme or a specific artist can be annoyingly disjointed. This is an exception to that rule. While many people appreciate the majestic symphonies by Ralph Vaughn Williams, there is a larger audience waiting to be introduced to one f the masters of British melody. Here is a selection of some of the more moody but eloquent works by a great composer too often dismissed.
The CD collection of 'Soft Sounds' is divided among several groups. Works on the collection include performances from the New Queen's Hall Orchestra (Barry Wordsworth, conductor), Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields (Sir Neville Marriner, conductor), and the London Philharmonic Orchestra (Sir Adrian Boult, conducing). These fine orchestras survey 'The Lark Ascending, romance for violin & orchestra' with a sensitive Hagai Shaham as soloist, 'Fantasia on Greensleeves, for harp, flute & strings', the Oboe Concerto in A minor' with Celia Nicklin soloist, the 'Lento' from 'The London Symphony', the 'Concerto grosso for strings' (Sarabande), 'English Folk Song Suite', and the much loved 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, for 2 string orchestras'.
There are no attempts to connect these works except through the concept of 'soft music' and there are individually finer performances of some on other recordings. But for a soothing, tranquil hour of gorgeous music to tame the savage world, this is one of those CDs that will serve the listener well - and hopefully increase Vaughn Williams' audience! Grady Harp, September 06
Beautiful!.......2004-02-19
"The Lark Ascending" is one of my all-time favorite pieces, and I must say that Ralph Vaughan Williams is amazing after listening to this CD. "Fantasia on Greensleeves" blew me away.
Wonderful music.

Beautiful Selections.......2002-03-22
I'm a Vaughan Williams enthusist and I find that this CD has many (not all, of course) of the soft and beautiful orchestral works of Mr. Williams. The quality is excellent. "Fant on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" is one of my favorite pieces of work by Williams, however, I didn't like Mr. Wordsworth's interpretation of this piece (in my opinion, the best interpretation is by Leonard Slatkin, which I suggest you buy). All in all, this is a very good CD and I highly recommand it.
Good if not for the oboe..........2001-03-19
This recording features wonderful renditions of many of Vaughan Williams' most heralded compositions. The Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is one of the best I've heard, as are most of the other pieces on this CD. However, the (incomplete) Oboe Concerto is of mediocre quality. Being an oboist, I am naturally critical of oboe playing, but I must say that at times even an untrained ear can discern the utter lack of taste that went in to playing the wonderful concerto, which I much enjoy playing myself. A good CD to help people come to love Vaughan Williams, but don't buy it for the Oboe Concerto - you'll be wasting your money.
I am so glad I bought this album!.......2000-11-04
I bought this album because it had two pieces I acutally knew the names of (Lark Ascending & Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis) and adored, never thinking I would also come to love the other pieces. Well I did and now am on a search to find more good works by Vaughan Williams! This is one of my most played cds and still gives me shivers with each listen :-)

Customer Reviews:
Alan Hovhaness.......2004-05-31
Alan Hovhaness is quite a "comfort zone" composer. This particular collection is very pleasent and well ballanced. I recommend it, especially since the sound is particularly good on it.
Just a bit worse than the first volume.......2003-01-07
Alan Hovhaness's music tends to not be very memorable, however it IS highly emotional and I can never say it's inherently bad. This compilation contains his most popular piece, Symphony #2 "Mysterious Mountian", as well as many other pieces, most of which is the only recording.
Beyond Mysterious Mountain, which gets a pretty good performance here, the highlight is easily Sympohny #50 "Mount St. Helens". This work portrays the eruption in 1980 that Hovhanes actually was close enough to to experiance its backlash. The first two movements are typical laid back Hovhanness, very pretty. The third movement, however, just ROARS with exceitment, and just does not stop. Wonderful.
Amoung the other selections, 'And God Created Great Whales' is a very interesting piece that includes tape music of whales, and is somewhat aleatoric in nature (chance music). Prelude and Quadruple Fugue is very nice example of an orchestral fugue, while Alleluia and Fugue goes more toward the choral direction and is very pretty.
As this is at twofer pricing, it's a very good buy, unless you already have some of the CDs these recordings were taken from. However, make sure to also get the other volume.
Stunning and diverse--a whole world of beautiful music.......2001-03-04
I actually purchased this album for the Hovhaness piece "Mysterious Mountain," which I played with a student orchestra in 1994. This piece is breathtaking and is not afraid to use slightly odd and unexpected harmonies to convey the sense of a very large and beautiful mountain--from the point of view of someone who is flying over and around it at great speed. It's really a great piece and I wish it were longer. But the fact that there are so many other good pieces on this record makes it a good classical music buy any way you look at it.

Customer Reviews:
Your Spirit's Gonna Soar!.......2001-06-13
As I listen to this album I really feel as if I'm sitting at the edge of the ocean, with my feet just barely being touched by the cool water. I can be at the Sea while doing homework, when in bed and about to fall asleep, or while eating dinner by candlelight.
That is what I like about this album...for I truly do believe that music has healing powers--much like the famed "Mozart Affect". Especially when I listen to the "Pastoral" and "Joyful" pieces--beautiful renditions of what Beethoven surely must have heard even when he was deaf. Just beautiful...simply relaxing and peaceful.
