5 out of 5 stars What a steal!.......2004-06-23

This recording of Sutherland's earliest records is absolutely brilliant!!! She soars through Arne and Handel as if it were the easiest music ever written. Whether you love Joan Sutherland, great singing or both: BUY THIS!

4 out of 5 stars Good Early Sutherland Concert Fare.......2004-03-27

This CD is 67:52 in length and provides 20 songs and arias from three live BBC radio broadcasts, as follows: 2 from the Dec. 1958 broadcast, 8 from the Dec. 1960 broadcast, and 10 from the Dec. 1961 broadcast. None are well-known operatic arias; none have orchestral accompaniment; all but the first two are accompanied by her husband (and teacher/coach/conductor) Richard Bonynge at the keyboard. (The 1961 broadcast is devoted to eighteenth century music and is accompanied by Bonynge on harpsichord.)

The selections are relatively unconventional and unfamiliar--evidently a point with the concert choices made by Sutherland and Bonynge--which will be welcome and refreshing to many. As the notes point out, "This group is typical of the creative programs Sutherland and Bonynge would present for next 30 years. They created 15 different programs and appeared together 129 times in recital. . . . [They] loved to rediscover music and made a specialty of reintroducing the world to many forgotten bonbons, such as these." Dame Joan is in fresh, youthful voice (her international career began with her Covent Garden Lucia in 1959, and she was 32 to 35 when these recitals were broadcast) and sings handsomely throughout, often displaying an attractive mezzo-like fullness and warmth of tone. But Sutherland opera fans may be somewhat disappointed, not in the singing, but in the material here, which calls for little of the full-throated excitement, dazzling pyrotechnics, and brilliant high notes of her best opera recordings; this is more modest fare, and it is, appropriately, more modestly sung. The sound is decent, clean, eminently listenable monaural, no doubt from airchecks, but has this small annoyance: it is afflicted throughout with a residual level of pre-echo and post-echo that is clearly audible on a high-resolution playback system.

The indispensable Sutherland collections (apart from her complete opera recordings) are The Art of the Prima Donna (2 CDs, all 1960 recordings) and La Stupenda (2 CDs, recordings from 1959 to 1988); these should be owned by anyone interested in Sutherland, coloratura soprano singing, or simply great singing. This recital, while enjoyable, is certainly not of comparable importance. But if you are a Sutherland fan and would like to supplement her meatier operatic endeavors with engagingly sung concert fare from the early years of her international career, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars sensational!.......2000-08-10

this are sensational. what singing, what a voice. A MUST HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars Bravissima!.......1998-11-30

Anyone who question Sutherland as the greatest coloratura soprano of all time should listen to this CD. She sings with complete control in all the arias. I think that Mozart had her in mind for the Constanza aria. Sutherland before 1975 as a dramatic coloratura soprano is simply without peer in this and any other century. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PERFORMANCES, FINE SOUND........2004-12-13

The four principal stars of this production performed it to great acclaim all around the world. Thanks to O d'O for releasing this historic performance. As for the performance itself: it is magnificent! All of the singers score five stars. Karl Bohm's conducting is superb. As for the recording sonics, they are not as bad as previous reviewers have stated. In fact, I have heard worse. The sonics on this recording are very fine for a live performance from 1974. My final rating:
Performance/ 5 stars, Sonics/ 4 stars, Overall Rating/ 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Performance, Poor Sonics.......2003-08-12

This performance is terrific. It contains the legendary cast of Bohm's 'Straussian' family that performed the work all over the world. But the sonics here is not so good. My advice is to get the Vienna 1964 under Karajan from DG. That version is in also mono not stereo. Also, Karajan makes cuts and reorganizes some of the scens so that they don't follow Strauss direction.
However, the performance is simply exceptionally outstanding. Christa Ludwig gives a miraculous performance as the Dyer's Wife - the supreme interpreter of the role, above all competition. Your heart stops whenever she starts singing. Leonie Rysanek, it need not be said, is incomparable as the Empress - no one can touch Rysanek in the role of the Empress except Rysanek herself!! Grace Hoffman sings with searing dramatic sense in the difficult role of the Nurse. Her voice is strong and incisive. Her malevolence comes through clearly and her voice has sufficient heft to cut through the Straussian orchestration. Walter Berry is in sensational voice as Barak and his partnership with then-wife Christa Ludwig is unbeatable. Their duet at the beginning of Act 3 is a collectors' item to be treasured. Jess Thomas is in excellent voice as the Emperor. Plus we have the great Fritz Wunderlich in a small role and the lovely soprano, Lucia Popp in a number of small roles - the falcon, the voice from heaven, the voices of unborn children. The Vienna Philharmonic play like gods. They knew that this was Karajan's last opera with them and they gave nothing but their best - their quality of musicianship puts all and sundry to shame. Finally, the DG transfers are superb. No doubt it is in mono but the clarity of detail is amazing. One could only wish that someone had been smart enough to record it in stereo back then. Unfortunately, no one did. It is always worthwhile getting a DG 'live' performance than some of those on smaller labels simply because DG has access to the original tapes and always make superb transfers. Karajan's 1962 Il Trovatore for example, had been available for a long time on smaller labels but the smaller labels had bad sonic quality. So when the DG version came out I just snapped it up because the quality was better although I had to pay more. Therefore, if you want the 1964 Karajan Vienna, better snap up now. (...) That night in 1964 at the Vienna State Opera was a miraculously special one that Straussians will not want to miss. In particular, if you like Die Frau Ohne Schatten, you must not miss that performance, esp when DG has done such superb transfers.

This performance is also exceptionally good. Ludwig, Rysanek and Berry all reprise their role to outstanding effect. In this version, Ruth Hesse takes over as the Nurse and James King is sensational as the Emperor. But sonics, sonics, sonics.... not too good. The DG version is clearer. I would have liked DG to do THIS transfer. Unfortunately, they didn't. So if you want a DG-quality transfer with a similar cast, get the DG Karajan.

4 out of 5 stars a fabulous night.......2000-09-05

The legendary FRAU partnership of Rysanek/Ludwig/King/Berry/Boehm assemble one last time for another earth-shaking performance. Compared to earlier performances of this quintet (e.g., the highly illegal Met pirates), Rysanek is in firmer, richer voice, Ludwig beginning to show the strain of the killer role of the Faeberin, Berry ever more tender and poetic, and King perhaps somewhat less stiff while still in ringing voice. The usual big cuts, of course, but that is little enough to pay for Boehm's volcanic conducting. This sounds to me mastered a little sharp, which tends to make Ludwig sound like she's screaming, even when she's not.

1 out of 5 stars Great performance - poor sound.......2000-09-04

Once again opera D'Oro screws up by taking a great performance and remastering it poorly. This performance runs at least one half tone sharp throughout - sometimes Ludwig sounds like a different singer. A real shame since the performance was an inspired one.

5 out of 5 stars at this price it's a winner.......2000-08-02

For those who have hesitated about acquiring a recording of this opera, I would heartily recommend this release for the modest price asked. It costs not much more than a third of its competitors. Due to the very early stereo release, the orchestral body does not have as much weight and power as more recent issues, but the Vienna Philharmonic as expected play very well. The singing is reasonably good, probably the best casting available at the time. Karl Bohm conducts with dignity and passion when called for. The recording has the cuts to the score that were generally sanctioned at the time.

Die Frau has a great deal of inspired music, both dramatic and lyrical, and Richard Strauss considered it a peak of achievement for him at the time, completed just after Der Rosenkavalier. The opera has a great deal of the fantastic about it - in terms of exotic and unusual action - and Strauss responded to Hugo von Hofmannstal's wonderful libretto with the fullest, most richly colored, sumptuous opera score of his career.

This set also has fine documentation and presentation, and at this price should be an essential recording of every serious music lover's library, if one has not already invested in another performance. The Solti studio recording with Domingo is my favourite of all, but this one, for a fraction of the cost, remains very good indeed. Warmly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Legendary recording from 1933.......2002-03-11

This 2 disc set consists of an abridged version of "Der Rosenkavalier" with Lotte Lehmann as the Marschallin. The recording has been issued by EMI but is not currently available from them. The Opera d'Oro remastering provides reasonably good sound, especially considering the fact that the recording was made in 1933. While surface noise and other sounds associated with recording onto 78 rpm discs are definitely present, they are not excessively intrusive. Even better, the voices are clearer than one might expect from a recording that's almost 70 years old.

As for the performance, it's one of those that truly deserves the label of "legendary". Lehmann's Marschallin is beautifully sung, warmer and less affected than Schwarzkopf, but with Schwarzkopf's attention to the text. Richard Mayr as Ochs is also outstanding.

The price for such a historic recording can't be beat, but as usual with Opera d'Oro, the notes include no information about the singers or the source material for the current remastering. Instead we get a brief commentary and summary of the plot. There are only 3 tracks on the first disc and 2 on the second, but anyone who loves this opera will gladly accept these minor inconveniences in order to hear this wonderfully idiomatic performance. While it should not be one's first or only "Rosenkavalier", it's nevertheless essential and highly enjoyable listening.

My local public radio station happened to play this opera ("The Queen of Sheba") one night; I'd never heard (or even heard of) it previously. Both the music and the singing are excellent, and it is a real treat to discover this virtually unknown treasure. This is a grand opera, with strong symphonic music, great chorus work, and gorgeous arias.

This is a worthy addition to any collection of the opera afficiando.

Despite a few quirky tempo changes in the first movement, Felix Weingartner's 1935 Vienna Ninth was the most persuasive recorded version of this work from the 78 era, captured in excellent sound for its vintage. Indeed, the vocal quartet in the finale remains unsurpassed, especially Richard Mayr's glorious opening solo. The slippery string portamenti and janissary-like percussion add attractive local color to the whole. The deliciously characterized Viennese Dances make an attractive filler, though Mark Obert-Thorn's fine transfers don't quite match Anthony Griffith's for Japanese EMI. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars One of the three greatest Ninths, but............2001-08-02

Felix Weingartner was the first to record all of the Beethoven Symphonies, and to this day, his interpretations remain classics. His single most famous and beloved recording was this, his Vienna Beethoven Ninth (actually, his second recording of the work); it was regarded as THE Ninth of its day, and in my opinion still stands as one of the three supreme statements of the work (the others being Furtwaengler and Fricsay). I suppose one might categorize his approach as "classical," although he he employs many subtle and effective tempo modifications throughout. His First Movement is taut and incisive, his Scherzo more relaxed and bouyant than most, his Adagio urgent but lovingly phrased, and his Finale is more expansive than Furtwaengler's or Fricsay's, more "spiritual," if you like. I am especially taken with his broad approach to the Coda, in which his soprano soloist is allowed space to really sing out her phrases. The Solo Quartet - Luise Helletsgruber, Rosette Anday, Georg Maikl, and especially Richard Mayr, is probably the most thrilling on record. Alas, this transfer leaves much to be desired. The transfer sounds like it was taken from a severely worn set, with heavy surface noise and strident highs that make listening painful. The bass is missing altogether - the drum beats in the First Movement are inaudible. Pearl usually does superlative work, so I don't understand what went wrong here. A Japanese EMI edition is little better; I would suggest seeking out Preiser's transfer, which sounds almost identical to the original 78's as I remember them.

      4 out of 5 stars a little correction.......2003-11-22

this is not a review, I just wanted to correct something, Pinza is not the most comtemporary since he died in 1950, Mark Reizen died in 1992, and sang gremin in eugene onegin in 1985 (his 90th birthday!)

4 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Historic Basses.......2002-08-13

As a developing singer and lover of bass arias, I have enjoyed this great collection of historic bass recordings. It is a fantastic opportunity to hear some of the greatest opera basses of the 20th century in some rare and hard to find recordings. Since many of these recordings are from the early part of that century (I think the most contempory of the basses is Ezio Pinza who died, I beleive in the 1950s), the sound qulaity may be lacking at times for our modern tastes. The performaces, howver, are well worth it. There are some real gems on this cd and a must for any affecianato of the operatic bass repretoire.

Most of this set is a compilation from EMI's Walkure (fragments of Bruno Walter's act 1 famous recording and of act 2 with Hotter and Fuchs). These recordings are classic and not need additional words.
The other fragments are also available on EMI and DGG. But as a compilation and at low price this set is attractive enough.
