Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate music for every time of day and every mood.......2007-07-03

With 20 CDs in the collection, we have classical music for every mood and atime of day.

4 out of 5 stars Would give 5 stars if sound quality where better.......2007-06-30

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price. The sound quality is decent, however it is not great. This set will not provide you with the crisp, clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ashkenazy - one of the best musicians of our time.......2005-11-21

I consider Ashkenazy to be one of the most underrated pianists. Since he has this unmarketable father figure image in the piano world many people put him in the backburner of their recollections. First of all, anyone with such a prolific repertoire as Ashkenazy falls under the category of "genius" (Richter was also strong in this area). A pianist, in general, has much more credibility if he/she can tackle a variety of different pieces and styles. Many people assume by default that because he splits his time conducting and plays so much different music... that he is a jack of all trades but master of none.
One of the distinct attributes that Ashkenazy has is his amazing intelligence (this links him to Richter). Unlike Gould and Poglerelich who seem eccentric in a childish way at times, Ashkenazy has a very deep understanding of music and its foundations. He understand the composers styles and dynamics. This really sets him aside from many other pianists. I was pleasantly surprised by this Rachmaninoff. It is very flowing and the orchestra is great (better than in the Richter CD in my opinion). There is a feeling that this music is always going in the right direction. Ashkenazy also doesn't fall in the trap of playing Rach Chopin-style. I like the Richter CD better because I like Richter's temperament... but this is an excellent set for those that might find Richter overwhelming.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrious Dark.......2005-03-19

The pianistic genius of Rachmaninov and his spirit incarnate: Vladimir Ashkenazy. If you have ever heard Rachmaninov play his own music, you probably pondered the impressive talent. But where his personal strengths lay in composition, his performances were a little too eccentric for me. For example, his renditions of militaristic Prelude No. 5 in G minor is a soft, cautious approach; his piano concerto no. 2 played so quickly, there is no time to enjoy each note.

Enter Ashkenazy. He plays that prelude with solid force and quick, snapping fingers, and thunderous chords, climaxing into those beautiful rolling hills...it is played beautifully. And of course, the piano concerto is slowed down to the proper tempo. (Incidentally, I find this concerto has some parts that are played too quickly, thereby losing a sense of largeness to some themes. In later recordings, Jean-Yves Thibaudet performed the concerto exactly to my tastes, and the orchestra was conducted, impressively, by Mr. Ashkenazy himself!)

For the piano enthusiast, this collection is nearly complete. The first three piano concertos are amazing. I grew up with Nos. 3 and then 2, and after a decade of waiting, finally listened to No. 1, which I hold in as high esteem as the later concertos. No. 4 is extremely modern, and I listen to it to let it grow on me, but I will always have a difficult time with this one. It's simply too influenced by his short Hollywood career, I feel. While it stands on its own, compared to the previous three, I tend to skip it.

I've heard Ashkenazy's recordings of the preludes before, but it was nice to finally own them. What can one say? Rachmaninov's forte was the prelude. Nowhere else can you hear chimes and bells with dark Russian themes underlying complex chord structures that scintillate or thunder.

New to me were the two Suites for 2 pianos. While much of it is a bit modern and avant-garde for my tastes, I enjoy them all the same.

For the price, you're getting quite a bargain, though. And if you don't care about the solo piano tracks, London has another release with only the four piano concertos.

5 out of 5 stars Ashkenazy's fluidity: a very good fit with Rachmaninov.......2004-12-09

This boxed set contains the four piano concertos, along with the entire library of pieces for two pianos, and a good selection of Rachmaninov's major works for solo piano.

Packaged in an elegant Decca slimbox, the 6 CDs are simply a pure joy to listen to. Ashkenazy does not delivery the wildest version of the concertos, or the most passionate or energetic. What he delivers is an incredible legato and incomparable touch, with just the right amount of power when necessary. Previn's conducting is a very good fit with Ashkenazy's sobre and elegant interpretation.

Listen to "Les Larmes" - French for "The Tears" - and appreciate Ashkenazy and Previn's rendering of one of Rachmaninov's most emotional pieces.

This boxed set is, in my opinion, the best Rachmaninov package currently available. The sound quality is very good, and it contains a large selection of piano works by one of the world's finest interpreters.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Rachmaninov Interpreter.......2003-04-06

while i dont have this particular set, i have most of ashkanazy's recordings via other the sets hes made, im assuming these are the same recordings. these are some of my favorite piano works ive ever heard in large part due to his interpretations of this music. i beleive there isnt an interpretation that i was unhappy with, so if you want all of ashkanasy's piano recordings and piano concertos in one set this is a great buy especially for the price and ammount of music.

5 out of 5 stars Superb set of Rachmaninov's complete Piano works.......2001-02-04

Ashkenazy shows that he is as much at home here as he is playing Beethoven, Chopin, or Mozart. Although these performances may lack the drama of Argerich's tempestuous playing, they are very credible interpretations of the Russian composer's piano music. His performances of the concerti with Previn conducting the London Symphony Orchestra are regarded as among the finest of the entire Rachmaninov cycle. And his performances with Previn on the piano are fine, even if Previn's technique takes a back seat to Ashkenazy's. Aside from the concerti, the real gems have to be Ashkenazy's brilliant performances of the etudes. They are just as refined and as soulful as his excellent recordings of the entire Beethoven piano sonata cycle. This cheap set not only is a splendid introduction to Rachmaninov, but shows Ashkenazy at his finest, playing with technical elegance and lyricism.

4 out of 5 stars Second Concerto worth six stars: the other are worth four........2006-10-28

IT is always wise to stay away from complete sets if you intend to keep only one. It is always better to take an eclectic approach. for the third, horowitz and barbirolli have one of the best in the market. ashkenazy and ormandy also present a fantastic reading, but it's harder to find. stay away from the argerich... completely overrated (i personally enjoy argerich's performances, but that one was off the mark).
the fourth is a more complicated question.. michelangeli presents us with an excellent reading, full of pathos. but rachmaninoff plays rachmaninoff on RCA has a more demonic quality to it.
the second on this set is clearly one of the best performances you'll ever hear. although ashkenazy has secured his position as a somewhat ambigious pianist by recording a vast discography and accomplishing relatively little, his rachmaninoff stands at the top of my list. the second especially, is rife of triumph and melancholy. a must for all rach lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Rachmaninov, Ashkenazy and Previn Again?!.......2003-07-18

The playing on this CD is worthy of five stars, but Universal gets a one-star demerit for releasing these works too many times. If you want one CD of Ashkenazy & Previn playing a couple of Rachmaninov Piano Concertos, then you buy the Penguin Classics title. If you want two CDs of Ashkenazy & Previn playing all four Rachmaninov Piano Concertos, then you buy the Double Decker. If you want six CDs of Ashkenazy & Previn playing all four Rachmaninov Piano Concertos, plus the Paganini Rhapsody and other works for piano, then you buy the boxed set. And now, if you want Ashkenazy & Previn just playing all four Rachmaninov Piano Concertos and the Paganini Rhapsody, you can get this three disc set. Geez, there is less selection in the grocery store! Some of the Universal Trio releases have been phenomenal -- Dvorak Slavonic Dances/Symphonic Poems, Brahms Concertos/Overtures, Mendelssohn String Quartets, etc. -- but with the combined resources of so many labels surely they could have dug a little deeper into the vaults and found something else that was unreleased on CD. Or, just not bothered with this title at all.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Idil amazing.......2006-07-19

No other performer compares to idil. HANDS down. HEr unique and individual style sets her apart from every other performer past and present.

Her recording of Rachmaninov's prelude in C sharp minor can only be topped by rachmaninov himself.

Every time i hear i new song from her, i feel i grow as a pianist.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Rachmaninoff at a good price........2002-07-10

Buy this box set. Biret is great. She plays Rachmaninoff straight up and doesn't taint the compositions with any wild "interpretations." And the recording quality is five star, too. I bought this in order to snag some lesser known Rachmaninoff that I loved (Cinq Morceaux, Moments Musicaux, etc.) and I really got what I paid for. Take a look at the huge tracklist - this is the Rachmaninoff you've been missing out on.

    5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2001-02-19

There are not many words that can describe this beautiful performance, so it is better to describe how I felt when listening to it. At times I smiled at the beauty of the piece selected and the grace at which it was played, other times I felt a surge of energy through me as Watts played with power on the Liszt pieces. This is a true gem to add to anyone's collection.

5 out of 5 stars "Watts" not to like?.......2001-02-06

I've been a big Andre Watts fan for most of my piano playing years. And the Great Pianists Series does a fine job in selecting two cds of music from his recordings that show Mr. Watts' particular musical skills.

Andre Watts has been criticized for having a somewhat limited repertoire, but this may be because he plays only what he truly loves. And the love shows through especially in the Liszt Campanelle Etude, the Gershwin and the Chopin.

The cd also shows off his tremendous musicianship and expression, which he never sacrifices to technical fireworks, though the fireworks are there. He takes risks and there is a lot of excitement in the music here but also a great deal of soul, something that is sadly missing from so many of today's technically perfect but boring musicians. This is a treasured cd set.

5 out of 5 stars This is an exciting interpretation of Rach 2.......2007-04-09

I have read all of the negative and luke warm comments (above). All I can say is I have heard several of the aforementioned interpretations of Rach 2 and I found this one to be one of the most "exciting" and musically interesting. I have listened to this CD easily over 50 times in my car and at home. I love it! I love it even more today than I did when I first heard it. This "test of time" is my ultimate litmus test for a classical music CD.

Grimaud has a distinctive musical sensibility. At times she plays very bold, she conjures an image of a large Russian man. But she can also display the sensitivity of a small, sensitive, french woman, which she is. All I can say to the reviewers who critiqued this CD negatively is that to me, Grimaud communicates an "organic" excitement in her interpretation and performance that has made it one of my all time favorites! I highly recomend it!

3 out of 5 stars Concerto fine - solo playing falls to routine.......2005-04-29

This disc of all Rachmaninov by Helene Grimaud splits just about evenly into two halves - the first devoted to the Second Piano Concerto and the rest to solo pieces.

Orchestra, at its first entrance starting the main theme of the first movement, sounds recessed - corrected by the end of the first long phrase or so. The Philharmonia, under Ashkenazy, once clearly heard, reveals an orchstra that has maintained its depth over a good number of years. Transitions during the Exposition section to follow appear unduly choppy. Grimaud, while revealing secure technique and decent feel for the idiom, has a habit of surging forward with the line here a couple of times, and also at the beginning of the cadenza in the Adagio sostenuto, regardless of what may follow. The piano, again, is somehow brought forward very quickly and briefly by the mikes for the last chord or two of a big stretto before the introduction of the second theme, and similar happens a couple of other times during this movement. Most of the remainder of the first movement, with fine sound quality when not tweaked with, goes by very well, if only conventionally so.

The Adagio is played in a much-to-be-expected subdued manner, with a good feeling for color from both orchestra and soloist and the right amount of sweep to the coda section. The finale starts off in fine well-sprung rhythm from the orchestra and bravura from the soloist, but come the Development section, Grimaud, who has somewhat mechanically played the trills at the quiet close of the Exposition, charging forward, clips, or enters the Development section a good half a beat early. Ensemble problems plague several tricky moments throughout. The affirmative, yet very loud tutti by the orchestra at the end of this section seems unnaturally abetted by one or two folks at the control board. The return of the romantic second theme is again handled conventionally, but possibly for bravura effect, scherzando triplets get clipped, especially insipid when doubled by flutes, yet only a momentary distraction up to the final, climactic passages to both the finale and the entire concerto, the big theme within rendered in its usual byzantine gold and bronze.

The G-Sharp Minor prelude from the close of the opus 32 collection of twelve, serves as segue between concerto and several of the opus 33 etudes-tableaux and Corelli Varations to follow. The feeling for atmosphere and color is fine for the prelude, but Grimaud's playing gets a bit weighed down by chronic anticipation of the downbeat, and other minute hesitations along the same lines - device used again to heigthen the dramatic effect of strings of repeated chords in the closing C-sharp Minor etude-tableaux from Opus 33, but undercut by heavy chords, for all the aggressive handling of them, are not heard in their full weight or resonance. Such feeling for chords and octaves crudely interrupts the plaintive trio section of the first etude-tableaux, which closes with light tolling of bells in the upper right hand. Grimaud's gilding of this passage, which negates its intended effect, is ironically a lesson in more-is-less, less-is-more. The second etude-tableaux on the disc has the right feeling for the lyric line, but pushed a little too hard in the accompaniment to be allowed its full flower.

Grimaud's playing for most of the solo pieces, and especially the Corelli Variations reveals more of her true personality than her playing in the concerto. Her anti-romantic sensibilities, turned mystic and postmodern by now to remain in step with current fashion, among the current echelon of pianists championing the heavily tried and true Romantic repertoire, come quickly to the fore.

Feeling for pulsation, line (especially in the slow, reflective D-Flat Major variations and intermezzo that precedes them) and color is weak in the Corelli Variations. The austerity and even strangeness of this music is made more remarkable from the pianist who inculcates inner contrast between the recidivist qualities (even if drained of life) of this music and modernist, instead of bleaching out so much of this contrast. Grimaud takes the modernism of the piece doctrinaire and as entirely her calling card, making her interpretation of the variations heavily two-dimensional. Even heavy chords are frequently shortened of their full note value and played in strict rhythm, regardless of harmonic change through them or underneath.

Again, the qualities that I rue about this kind of playing should not disappoint Grimaud fans, and even the slightly higher endorsement I make of this disc may be so much so at the outset to worry a few. Outside of those people, the combination of popular concerto and thirty-minute sampling of solo repertoire will seem cumbersome to the average collector. Those who have Ashkenazy, with Kondrashin for the Second or Haitink for the set of four, for the concerti, or for solo repertoire (etudes, variations especially fine), are in good hands.

      4 out of 5 stars French romanticism.......2003-09-06

Helene Grimaud's rendition of Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 displays a new possibilty in interpreting this work. She plays it with female sensations that are not typical in the interpretations of this work. What I also feel is that this rendition is very French~. Particularly the first movement, the depression and the emotion and mental conflicts are lessened by her "chanson" style of playing, so to speak. But I don't mean it's not good because this seemingly unsuitable way of playing indeed makes this work VERY impassioned. However, my major disappointment comes when Grimaud plays the end of the 2nd movment, which is also the climax. Let me explain the reason a little bit. The 2nd movement represents Rachmaninoff's recovery from his mental breakdown. This particular movement is tranquil, which in a way shows that the composer's psyche is in a peaceful and relatively stable stage. However, his emotion is somewhat repressed from eruption. Many times, the emotion in this mvt. is on the verge of erupting but, nevertheless, is repressed. The ending of this mvt. should be the summation of the all the emotions and sensations of the 2nd mvt that have been repressed (probably also the 1st), and this summation directly leads to the thundering 3rd mvt. So playing this passage requires a pianist to use stronger strength, which Grimaud doesn't have. And in this passage, she uses the same "Chanson" style to play. Among all the recordings of RACH 2, I think Weissenberg's DIVINE playing is my all time favorite, and Richter's rendition is surperb too. However the former one is very rare, and you may hardly find it in store.
All in all, I give Grimaud's recording 4 stars. This is a fine recording.

4 out of 5 stars cover looks nice.......2001-10-06

The cover on this CD looks nice. Grimaud looks gorgeous, but the playing on this CD falls short of my expectations. I thought Grimaud was a great player because of all the favorable reviews I read about her concerning Brahms. I just love her Brahms interpretations. However, this CD falls short for two reasons: the dynamics are sometimes reversed (loud when it should be soft), and the playing is too nauseus in some places.
From a technical perspective, the recording is not perfect, which is surprising given all the technology out there to re-record and edit things. I concur with some of the other observations of other musicians that there is some eyebrow raising breathing going on. I don't know what's all about, but it ruined the musical experience.
That said, Grimaud is still a great pianist.

      1 out of 5 stars major disappointment.......2001-10-06

This CD is a major disappointment. I would strongly advise not buying it and getting Grimaud's Brahms instead. Grimaud is known for the Brahms but the Rachmaninov CD in particular demonstrates that her playing is having trouble expanding out into different and diverse repertoire. There is heavy groaning in the background if you listen carefully during the performance, and it sounds like someone is reading off pages of music (you can hear pages turning). In order to give the best performance possible, it needs to be memorized. That way, you're focused on not reading the music but playing it with emotion and interpreting it. This CD is a disappointment given Grimaud's Brahms reputation. I wish I had not purchased this CD.

Before Warner Bros relegants this incredible debut recital to the recycle bin, snap it up. Bax's plays (especially the Bach pieces) is nothing short of stunning. Where Gould can be harsh, Bax caresses the music. These are amazing transcriptions (especially Gluck). Bax is the 'real thing' and this album will provide hours and hours of pleasurable listening.

5 out of 5 stars Daily Dose of Perlman.......2000-09-27

It was the last piece on this CD that captured my soul, and rendered me unable to go through a day without listening to this collection. Sarasate's "Zapateado" is the ultimate challenge and Perlman's virtuosity in meeting it is staggering. But once I got beyond my hunger to hear Zapatedo again and again, drinking in every note, I realized this collection runs the gamut of mood and technique from the heart-racing Scherzo Tarantelle, the intense Perpetuum Mobile, to the almost cloyingly sweet Berceuse. What I enjoy most about this wonderfully diverse collection is not only the dazzle of Perlman's performance, but the perfect interplay of Sander's piano. Violin and piano weave together in a partnership displaying the genius of each composer as well as the genius of the performers. The Perlman/Sanders partnership was surely made in heaven.
