Although Nimbus's Ivogun cd has far better sound,there are some rare and precious items on this disc that any lover of coloratura singing cannot afford to be without. The "Caro Nome" for instance,which Mme. Ivogun sings in german,is firmly,yet delicately executed,the tone brilliant and sweet,the fioriture lacy and flawless. It is meditatively treated. In an entirely different vein,Mme. Ivogun conveys well the rage and fury of the Queen of the Night,the smallness of her voice notwithstanding. She soars to the high F's in "Der Holle Rache" and in "O Zittre Niche displays a regal authority in the largo section and a virtuoso's technical assurance in the allegro. Ivogun's solos from Mozart's Seraglio are also a standout,with authority of manner compensating for any lack of weight. Ivogun's runs and roulades are perfectly even,and she tosses them at the listener with defiance and authority. This is a brilliant disc,a souvenir of another age,when singers could really sing. It is also interesting to note that Mme. Ivogun was the teacher of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. BUY THIS!

Nazzareno De Angelis was contemporary with Ezio Pinza and Tancredi Pasero. De Angelis had a trumpet like timbre which was a bass voice but with an amazing upper range. The extraordinary power of his voice and his mezza di voce really made him unique. There was a unique sensitivity in his singing. He made every word he sang mean something. Lebendige Vergangenheit did a wonderful job preserving this great voice.
The first two tracks are from Mose. They are both amazing in terms of the singing, diction and mezza di voce. His soft voice is gorgeous. His rendition of La Calunia is beautifully sung and comical. He throws in a great high G at the end. There are two excerpts from Nabucco. De Angelis was a high bass so the role of Zaccaria fit his voice perfectly. The breath support and sense of line are wonderful in the prayer. La Juive is a role that De Angelis did not do on stage. Luckily he recorded this excerpt because it again shows the unbelievable power of the voice. The rendition of "Ella giammi m'amo" may be my favorite of all time. I really love the soft beginning and the nuances throughout. Wotan's farewell is so well sung that I almost forget that it is not done in the original language. The performance is so sensitive. The other excerpts are from Faust and Mefistofole, two roles that fit De Angelis like a glove. I think he is the greatest singer to ever sing the Boito version. I highly recommend this singer and this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars The Young Nazzareno De Angelis........2006-12-29

Nazzareno De Angelis was born with a naturally powerful and gorgeous voice. He is no more then 28 years old in any of these recordings, however the voice already sounds rich and mature. As his career went along the voice got higher. An interesting fact is that De Angelis strongly encouraged Maria Callas to sing bel canto roles. At the time he heard her sing she was singing heavier stuff and he told her he could already hear the damage. As far as this recording is concerned the voice sounds wonderful considering the years of the recordings.

The first tracks are with piano. Basilio's aria "La Calunia" is sung brilliantly by De Angelis. It is very interesting to hear the later version of this on the earlier volume. The second track from I Lombardi shows the ability De Angelis had to sing with different colors. The aria from Ernani is on this CD twice. Both recordings are equally effective and only a year a part. The superb bel canto technique of this singer really shows up in this aria. Both versions of "Vecchia Zimmara senti" get inside my heart. The dark color on the word "pianto" meaning I weep just penetrates into the heart. Two arias from Mefistophele "Ave Signor" and "Ecco il mondo" represent early recordings of the greatest interpreter of the Boito version of the Faust story in my opinion. The approach to the high F naturals is more lyrical then the approach in the later recordings. The aria "Il Lacerato Spirito" shows the versatility of De Angelis. The performance is beautiful and expressive. Every track is great on this CD, but "Gloria di Dio" from Gli Ignoti really stands out to me. The listener really gets a sample of how big a voice De Angelis had. Plus he handles the huge range with ease. Low E to high F sharp. The last piece "Ave Verum" is so spiritual in terms of the vocalism and expression. It is the only recording I know of representing De Angelis singing Art Song.s I highly recommend anything De Angelis recorded. This CD introduced me to repertoire I didn't know plus it constantly teaches me about Italian Diction and Bel Canto singing.
