Electronic Music of Theater & Public Activity
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Gordon Mumma (b. 1935) has played a pioneering role in the development and evolution of "live-electronic" music. "Live-electronics" as a concept and practice appears to have originated in the United States in the late 1950s, outside the few institutional electronic studios and often in the context of innovative theatre activity. From its inception, it frequently involved two processes: (1) live performance with accompanying or interacting sound materials on magnetic tape; and (2) the use of electronic circuitry as sound-modifying and sound-producing instruments. Beginning with his classic Megaton for Wm. Burroughs of 1963, Mummas live-electronic and cybersonic works of the 1960s and 1970s, especially Medium Size Mograph (1963) and Hornpipe (1967), display his resourceful use of both live-electronic processes. Cybersonic Cantilevers (1973) extends them to include the active participation of audience members, many of them children and teenagers who were quick to grasp the artistic potential of cybersonic technology, while Conspiracy 8 (196970) is an early example of live interaction between performers and computer. New Faces of 1952 .......2007-05-13
This is the original broadway cast album. It contains songs which went on to become hits for their performers, such as Lizzie Borden, Lucky Pierre, Love is a simple thing, Guess who I saw today, Bal petit bal and Monotomous. Now re-released on Jasmine label, it was originally released by RCA Victor so the quality is excellent, but from the mono era.
Wonderful memories!.......2007-03-24
Loved having this on the CD form. I wore out the 33 1/3 record. Thank you for carrying this CD!
Where is Time For Tea?.......2005-12-04
I bought a recording of this show in the middle '70s when RCA was re-isuing a lot of their rare soundtracks. The record made a big deal about isuing a lost track called "Time For Tea" from this show sung by June Carroll and Alice Ghostley. This track is not included on this CD. Luckily I still had the record, and was able to make a version of the CD and add the second last track just before Lizzy Borden. Buyer beware however, this CD is not complete!
If You Tapped Your Fingers to the Music in Waiting for Goffman . . ........2005-08-16
Hey, don't waste your money unless you dig the score of really crummy musicals. Some people do. If you are not among that select group then don't believe the good reviews by other buyers (bless their hearts) like I did. Note that Amazon doesn't offer excepts from this aged dog. Good strategy. I bought this cd for the Lizzie Borden song on it but the arrangers even ruined that with a silly bridge section about Lizzie ruining the singers' weekly hoedown. Terrible. Maybe I can unload this cd in a used music store and get a few dollars back. I hope so.
What about the movie?.......2005-07-01
Great, great show! But are any of you people aware that "New Faces of 1952" came out as a movie. The entire stage show was shot mainly from the front as if from a really expensive orchestra seat. Includes Paul Lynde and Ronny Graham in a howling send-up of "Death of a Salesman." Paul Lynde in tattered jungle gear at an afternoon ladies lecture describing his latest safari to darkest Africa. And Eartha doing "Monotonous!" The whole show was filmed.
NOW where is a VHS or DVD of that film? The world is waiting!

This re-release of Saltimbanco is just what the doctor ordered! With some new arrangements, and two completely new tracks, this re-release fulfils the wants of all of the die-hard fans of Cirque Du Soleil. Adagio has beautiful parts that were severely missed on the first release of the album, and Cantus-Melopee is a nice new track. Now the CD has almost all of the music from the show! Nice job!

What am I missing?.......2002-07-02
Oh, man, what am I missing that the other reviewers of this cd find so compelling?
Trilling and whistling synthesizers going "woooo-oooooo" and "ahhhhh-aaaaaa" while the singer chants the same words over and over and over and over and over (get it?)... Like this:
do you love me, too?
do you love me, too?
(woooo-oooooo, woooo-oooooo, woooo-oooooo)
do you love me, too?
do you love me, too?
(woooo-oooooo, woooo-oooooo, woooo-oooooo)
do you love me, too?
do you love me, too?
(woooo-oooooo, woooo-oooooo, woooo-oooooo)
do you love me, too?
do you love me, too?
(woooo-oooooo, woooo-oooooo, woooo-oooooo)
I love you
do you love me, too?
etc. for 4:20
Did somebody say chill? This cd is making my hair stand on end! Did somebody say dance? I've heard that people make love to this kind of music, but I think I'd be too busy laughing and would lose my focus...
Forget it.
cafe del mar-like.......2002-04-28
very nice little cd, in the same style as cafe del mar series, very relaxing, to enjoy late in the evening, or with a sunset-view.
however, cafe del mar addicts might find it a little bit not "rich" enough in sound.
so, like cafe del mar, but not as good as cafe del mar.
A different kind of chillout music.......2002-03-10
My latest musical obsession right now is chillout music. So far I have only found one compilation that I do not care for (The Ultimate Chillout 2001 or something close to that title). It took me awhile to love the seventh volume in the Cafe Del Mar series. As commercialized as "Ultra Chilled" and "The Classic Chillout Album" are, I love those two compilations to pieces. The diversity on those albums are first class. Not all chillout music is trip hop. My latest acquisition is "Buddha Bar Presents: Living Theater vol.1". This cd is far different from what I have been exposed to. Now while the music here is excellent to chillout to, I would have to say the music itself is more world than trip hop, with a splattering of jazz. P.Melas' cover of "My Funny Valentine" is a sensual aural pleasure with the jazz-influenced beats and smooth vocals. Probably the sexiest track on this album. I particularly loved Manuel Franjo's "Solo Por Tu Amor" and Balthazar's "Gypsy Tears". "Adams & Evenings" by Bert Joris is a gorgeous instrumental that is both jazz and trip hop influenced. It almost reminds me of Lux's "One Billion Stars" in some strange way. This album is ideal for a lazy Sunday morning with a cup of hot coffee and the Sunday newspaper as it is ideal for an afterhours nightclub to sit back and relax after partying heavily. This is just a superb collection of world, jazz, trip-hop influenced songs that deserves to be heard whether it be in a nightclub or at home.
O.K. Chill Out.......2002-01-31
This album has about 6 really good listening tunes. If you like sounds on the edge of Hed Kandi productions then song 14 WHAT IS THIS? is about the best on the album. A couple more female vocal tunes are very catchy to include "ITS A LOVELY DAY AND DO YOU LOVE ME TOO". Overall, not a bad album but I've heard better.
Buddha Bar fan.......2001-10-22
Awesome cd- you'll never get bored listening to this one!

Album Description
Collection of early works and her first vocal compositions, originally released on LPs in the 1970s and early 1980s on her own Wizard Records. "One of my earliest pieces, `Hear What I Feel', was a self-exploratory, sensory-deprivation experimental work, designed to help me discover new sounds, delve into psychological aspects, as well as communicate with the audience on a pre-verbal level of awareness. After spending an hour in isolation with my eyes taped shut and not touching anything with my hands, I was led our into the performance space where my assistant had placed a variety of substances in six small glass dishes. As I touched the material, I tried to give an immediate vocal response to what I felt both emotionally and physically, without the benefit of visual information. I expected the shock of bringing a solitary state of mind into the heightened awareness of a performance situation to intensify my experience, and the poignancy of my `prepared' state to affect the audience. The sounds are presented here in their raw state; it is truly an experimental work with no intentional musical implications or designs. `Voice Piece: One-Note Internal Resonance Investigation' explores the color spectrum of a single pitch. Circular Song was inspired by the circular breathing technique of horn players. `Des Accords pour Teeny', an exploration of multi-phonic technique or choral singing, was dedicated to Teeny Duchamp. In much of my early work I dealt with sound as a physical presence, sculpting it, building up layers in complex constructions, letting the flow of thought and the visualization of sonic gestures direct my studio art. Voice Is the Original Instrument was both a statement of purpose and a manifesto as, through various experiments and explorations, I tried to rediscover the basic function of the voice as the first means of expression as well as to release untapped sonic material. As I gave my classically trained voice its freedom, letting it direct me toward new places and ideas, I developed what was a unique vocabulary and used those sounds to score an orchestra of layered voices."

Classic - Hold the Chills.......2006-06-25
This is a fine collection of mostly classical themes.
Some of them have nice creepy moments, but on the whole, it's just some solid music. Not something to buy if you want really "spooky" music, but worthwhile for some interesting listening.
Packed with creepy stuff.......2000-12-16
This is an awesome album. It starts off with thunder crashing, running footsteps, a gate creaking, the wind howling, a cat screeching, a door opening, a woman crying that she needs help....and then SCREAMING! And then straight into track 2, the overture to 'The Phantom of the Opera'. Wow! The rest of the cd also features 'creepy' music from various sources, such as Alfred Hitchcock films, like Psycho, various classic works like Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Night on Bald Mountain', and also some other creepy sound effects. A good album not only for Halloween but I dare you to listen to it during a dark night with a thunderstorm raging outside.
A real work-out for your system.............1999-12-11
I've owned the "Chiller" CD since it's release in '89. At the time, I was working for a local Audio/Video/Music dealer, and was looking for 'demo' CD's containing not necessarily heavy bass, but ones displaying incredible dynamic range, and sharp transient peaks. I already owned a copy of "Time Warp", also on Telarc, and was intrigued when I read about "Chiller. Needless to say, I was extremely pleased with this disc. Not only did I get a disc containing some great treatments of classics, but the re-make of the "Psycho" suite is wonderful (the shower sequence is very faithful to the original)! A word of warning.....the dynamic range of this disc is not to be underestimated.....I drove an older amplifier into thermal shutdown VERY quickly with track #1. I haven't tried it since I've upgraded my home system....hmmm....might have to scare the neighbors tonight (or at least rattle a few dental fillings)!
Great stuff!.......1999-10-09
This CD contains tons of great classic Halloween tunes. Even though the names might sound unfamiliar, you probably know most of the music on here through cultural osmosis. Heck, it's worth it just for "Funeral March of a Marionette" (the Alfred Hitchcock show theme.)

Good follow-up........2002-11-11
Ever since mainstream stores have begun stocking these wonderful albums, I've seen many people purchase them who wouldn't ordinarily. Now it seems as if the makers have begun capitalizing on this buy putting out volume 2, 3, 4, 5 and beyond. There's nothing really wrong with this as it gets more great music out there. The only problem that I can find is that when you start putting out several albums based on a small pool of music, a lot of repetition can occur. Some albums if this genre that I've bought have been blatant copies of other, more well know discs out there. This CD does have some songs that can be heard elsewhere, but the versions are slightly different. It's a bit different from volume 1 in that this disc seems to be more lyrics and vocals. Almost a bit rocky. I can see this being played at an upbeat bar or club and getting a good response. The first disc was mellower; this one seems to pick up the beat a bit. Although, there are still plenty of down time songs to appreciate. I would recommend this album without hesitation, although I imagine a purchase of volume 1 would be in order.

Customer Reviews:
A collection of non-beatmixed Tracy Young dance mixes with bland vocals..........2005-10-19
This is not your usual Tracy Young circuit party continuous mix. These are all free-standing, full-length remixes by Tracy Young. And the results are mixed:
1. it's a lovely day...Erica Jennings (3:42) (very moody, melancholy house, female vocal)
2. solo port u amor...manuel franjo (7:20) (blech! Dreary male latin vocals and another moody mix)
3. New york city...fuman freak (7:38) (dark tribal, with male vocals reminiscent of Byron Stingly. But still subdued...no drama here)
4. wishing you were here...misarah (7:42) (ah...some drama! Still mostly a melancholy house track, with female vocals, but this progressive mix has some nice build ups)
5. bang bang...erica Jennings (6:32) (a cover of a Cher song-which she covered herself at one point-and in all honesty, I would have preferred a remix of her 1987 version. This song is really hokey-making a dance version just for the sake of making a dance version. You'll wanna shoot yourself down after hearing the repetitive "bang bang" line....)
6. Compassionate Buddha...asian heart (6:53) (good music, good build ups and peaks, but not a real vocal track, more like a dub)
7. miracle...charlene Holloway (7:50) (one of the best tribal diva anthems on the disc. Hard and dark.)
8. The world is a stage...terry barber (8:44) (another hard and dark mix, this one with an operatic female vocal. Nice mix)
9. My funny valentine...P. Melas (6:30) (interesting...and depressing, just like the song itself)
10. what is this...missarah (8:43) (this is a pretty good female vocal track-but, as with most of the tracks on here, I think the overall problem is that the melodies of the songs just aren't as strong as the instrumental mix would require them to be, so the music is forced to tone itself down.)
11. Sweet Johnny...kyoko (4:00) ( a chill out track, not a dance tune)
Slow, boring, like a sketcheless canvas.......2004-06-17
Though a good mixer, Tracy just doesn't know how to keep the energy up. Try someone else, or buy this in order to fall asleep.
Nothing but AWESOME.......2004-01-17
If you buy ONE Dance Disc this Year: THIS IS IT!!!
Great House/Deep House Traxx mixed by talented Tracy Young.
A great Journey into Soundz.
Is there coming something up from Celeda or Suzanne Palmer (69 records)?
But in between be sure to listen to this great Stuff.
Never Heard Bang Bang (Cher-Song) better.
simply Fab !.......2003-07-17
I just bought this CD last night. I am up at this ungodly hour (it's 8:30 AM in NYC) to write this note to compliment DJ Tracy. You go girl... LOVE IT ... more please!
Fierceness at its best.......2003-06-26
There's a lot to be said about a woman who has taken the turntables by storm in the last several years and not had time to look back. Young is not only beautiful and vivacious but full of energy and emotion, and it shows through her music selections and the way she remixes them with clarity, elevation and prestine unity. It's breathtaking; the vocals seem to emerge out of nowhere, then they disappear for awhile as other effects flow through like a whirlwind environment that blends colors into pure magic, until those vocals reappear with prestine timing. It all can't get much better than this. She brings people to their feet, she forces your hands in the air, she keeps your smile from going anywhere but brighter and brighter, she makes your soul feel light. The selections are perfect (esp. tracks 3,4, and 8). Watch out for "Wishing You Were Here", as it becomes a classic in the future. Thanks again, Ms. Young. You've done it once more.

Album Description
This recording features the premiere recordings of works by the late Lou Harrison and the legendary Harry Partch. John Schneider, guitarist and Los Angeles radio personality performs on a wide variety of guitars using such instruments as Partch's microtonal Adapated Guitars, Martin, Gibson and Fender guitars, a National Resophonic Guitar, and other instruments that feature tuneable fretboards for various types of Just Intonation. Lou Harrison (1917-2003) wrote his last guitar piece for National Steel guitar, custom fretted in Just Intonation. The Scenes from Nek Chand uses a six-note mode and is based on the sculpure and architecture of Nek Chand in northern India. Harry Partch worked on the adapatation of guitars in the 1930s, using one for his Barstow: 8 Hitchhikers' Inscriptions (1941) (available on BRIDGE 9041). The opening of Partch's long lost song cycle, December 1942, begins with a setting of the jester's song "Come Away Death" from Shakespearre's Twelfth Night. Three Intrusions (1949) are the first compositions to use Partch's newly invented Diamond Marimba and the Adapted Guitar 2. Both of these works feature Schneider singing and intoning the vocal parts, as well as performing on copies of Partch's Adapted Guitars.
Also available: Just West Coast, John Schneider guitars, BRIDGE 9041
Customer Reviews:
The only record of its kind, and well-done.......2006-01-10
While I too have some criticisms, I can't imagine anyone having the time to do all the unique things that had to be done to realize this album and still have time to get every little thing perfect. This stands beyond many albums in terms of performance and artistry. It is unique and varied. It is definitely a bit jolting in terms of consistency, from the electric-sounding track 1, to the Partch, whereas the rest is more normal guitar playing. But it is all worthwhile. Schneider's singing may not sound like Partch, but his inflection and interpretation are suberb in terms of following the composer's intent. His playing is technically brilliant. It is not fair but to view this as an early recording in a basically yet-to-be-explored field. I hope this album inspires many to build on the ground that Schneider and a few others are working to lay down.
inconsistent, directionless, some great material.......2005-10-15
The reason this recording is important is because it has several important pieces which are on record for the first time, a few by Lou Harrison, a few by Harry Partch. The performances are technically excellent but some truly lack soul. The album is for the most part consistent until we reach the Harry Partch material which seems out of place (this is when it takes a turn and makes the listener cringe), John Schneider sings on the Harry Partch tracks, the singing is very sub-par. He sings about being a hobo and riding a train but the voice sounds far too crisp and clean. But it's hard to complain because these are their first time on record and our only way to hear them. You need to close your eyes and Imagine a gruff, hairy, hobo singing them. Also, the piece written by John Scheider feels a little too melodic and peaceful for this record. This disk has some great material on it, but purchase with an informed mind.
