This welcome collection pairs two late-1950s sessions that sat in the Blue Note vaults for decades after they were recorded. It offers a variety of gifts for the Sonny Clark fan. First, there is the matter sidemen. The March 1959 session that spawned the first six tunes boasts the presence of tenor Hank Mobley and drummer Art Blakey, both found in inspired form here. Mobley is bright throughout, playing with a bit more fire than usual while producing tender and moving work on the ballad title track. Blakey, meanwhile, is an animal (listen to his fury on "Minor Meeting"), goading and prodding and steering from the background. The final three songs, from December of 1957, include guitarist Kenny Burrell, tenor Clifford Jordan and drummer Pete LaRoca. Of course, Clark is the unifying theme. His compositions are crafty enough to keep things interesting but simple enough to allow assured, fluid improvisation. His piano work shows equal parts grace and grit, delicacy and drive, and his support of the other soloists is consistently interesting and lively. --Marc Greilsamer

Spirited performances and quality songwriting.......2003-09-07
My Conception on paper is a very standard hard bop album recorded for Blue Note Records in 1959 (and 3 bonus tracks from a different 1957 session). Statistically speaking, the chances of picking up any Blue Note record and finding Sonny Clark, Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, Paul Chambers and Art Blakey present are pretty high. Yes, it's the standard hard bop unit that rarely deviates from theme-solo-solo-solo-drum tradeoffs-theme format, but My Conception benefits internally from quality songwriting and uniformly spirited performances by everyone.
The album, all originals by Clark, kicks off with "Junka." Right away, Art Blakey sets the tone with his trademark head-bopping, foot-tapping, choogaloogin' drum beat with all those little flourishes and fills. Mobley, Byrd, Clark, Chambers solo followed by some drum tradeoffs. The midtempo "Blues Blue" features a strong Paul Chambers bass solo, while Donald Byrd is fiery on "Minor Meeting," the best track on the cd. Byrd's trumpet must have inspired Blakey as he rumbles almost uncontrollably underneath Byrd. Hank Mobley plays cat and mouse with Blakey after that, and Clark dissipates the tension on his solo, causing Blakey to nearly back off, letting Paul Chambers carry Clark to the end. Fans of Hank Mobley will be happy throughout, as his lines are both interesting and emotive, especially on "Royal Flush." Sonny Clark, whose playing has generated a group of highly devoted fans (as did Hank Mobley), drops some juicy piano stabs behind Mobley on "Some Clark Bars." "Minor Conception" is the only song that doesn't really fit, almost like, "Hey guys, we need a ballad now!" It's ok, Mobley and Clark solo well on this silly ballad to make up for it.
The last three tunes trade Mobley, Byrd, and Blakey for Cliff Jordan, Kenny Burrell, and Pete La Roca for this 1959 session. Paul Chambers remains - folks, Mr. PC plays on EVERY late 50's hard bop session, get used to it. Anyway, Minor Conception provides a nice home for these wayward tunes. It's nice to hear Kenny Burrell's clean guitar lines, and Sonny Clark is especially fiery with a twisty-turny solo on "Minor Meeting" and a dramatically urgent sounding one on "Little Sonny."
Overall, I'd recommend this pretty wholeheartedly to established fans of hard bop, in particular, fans of Sonny Clark. As we all know, Clark didn't record too many albums before his downward spiral into drugs and alcohol took him a few years later. There is nothing startlingly original about My Conception, but the tight, snappy performances more then make up for it. So, if you've gone through your list of essential hard bop Blue Note albums (Soul Station, The Sermon, Moanin?), Minor Conception is a good place to continue. Not essential, but very enjoyable.
Another brilliant recording by Sonny Clark.......2000-10-15
Sonny Clark was one of the pioneers of beebop jazz. An outstanding pianist, every recording that Sonny made in his all to brief Jazz Career is brilliant and wonderful to listen to. This CD is no exception, it is brilliant beebop with the immortal Art Blakey on Drums, Hank Mobley on Tenor Saxophone, and other Jazz greats. This CD is taken from two sessions that Clark did, and sat in the Blue Note vault for over 30 years before being reissued in this Blue Note Conneusior Series. Sonny Clark passed away too short in life (31 years old when he died), and he is sorely missed in the Jazz world. It is indeed fortunate that we have wonderful Jazz sessions by Sonny Clark and each one of them from "Dial S for Sonny" to "My Conception" is well worth 5 stars and more. Highly Recommended!
4.75 stars.......2000-08-02
This well-done reissue combines two hard-to-find Sonny Clark sessions. Tracks 1-6 comprise a March 29th, 1959 session with trumpeter Donald Byrd, tenorist Hank Mobley, and drummer Art Blakey, obviously meant as an album but not released in Clark's lifetime. The last three tracks (7-9) were from a session 15 months earlier (Dec. 8, 1957) with tenorist Clifford Jordan, guitarist Kenny Burrell, and drummer Pete La Roca; Paul Chambers plays bass on both sessions. So basically you've got a "lost" Sonny Clark album here with a three-song bonus pairing him with Kenny Burrell. Perhaps the reason Alfred Lion didn't release the album at the time was that only one of the six compositions does NOT appear on some other Clark album. But Clark's stock has gone up in the jazz world, for good reason, so that now anything he recorded is of considerable interest. The fact that he rarely recorded with either Blakey or Mobley only adds to that interest. Blakey cooks here and Mobley handles his duties with his customary swinging aplomb. Aside from this, Mobley and Clark crossed paths in the studio only three other times, the tenorist appearing on Dial 'S' For Sonny and Clark playing on two early Mobley albums, but one is left wishing they had paired off many more times. Their styles dovetail remarkably, both having an economical, elegant sense of swing, relaxed yet propulsive, and great musical intelligence. Another Clark/Mobley album coming to light is cause for celebration.
Though Clark certainly didn't get his due for many years, I'd have to say that he could hardly be considered 'neglected' now that every note he ever recorded as a leader is in print and dozens of albums on which he played as a sideman are also available. The same, sadly, cannot be said of Hank Mobley. Though his star seems to have been rising of late, MOST of his fifties albums for Blue Note remain long out of print and a large handful of his sixies albums (including Another Workout)are unavailabe as well. So any album that he appears on as sideman, particularly with such a simpatico leader, is doubly welcome.
The three bonus tracks appended to My Conception provide a tasty dessert, with Clifford Jordan and the superb Kenny Burrell contrasting nicely with Mobley and Byrd from the other session. Clark apparently worked well with guitarists, having recorded several outstanding sessions with Grant Green, and with Burrell again on the altoist John Jenkins's eponymous (and very fine) debut LP. I don't know why this lineup only recorded three selections but they round out this CD very enjoyably.
All told, this release may not be the classic that Cool Struttin' and Leapin' and Lopin' are, but every jazz fan should have it.
My Conception: Primo Sonny Clark!.......2000-03-22
Don't let the liner notes throw you. Contrary to the liner notes, there are no "trumpet fluffs" or ragged edges in these "arrangements". This is nothing less than a first-rate recording. Sonny is at his expressive, intuitive best, playing just slightly behind the beat, a model of cool, effortless post-Bop pianism. Pete "La Roca" Sim's cymbal work runs circles around Blakey, who played at deafening volume levels. The sides with Burrell are nearly 43 years old, yet sound fresher than the stuff Diana Krall is selling en masse today. When will they learn?
Yeah! More Sonny!.......2000-02-17
This reissue consists of two sessions from the late fifties with two different quintets. The first six selections were recorded on March 29,1959. The line-up consists of Donald Byrd on trumpet, Hank Mobley on Tenor, Paul Chambers on bass, Art Blakey on drums & of course Sonny Clark on piano. All six selections are Clark originals. With such a formidable line-up nothing but superb musicianship would be expected, and that's exactly what you have here. This is classic Hard Bop, Hard Funk, Soul Jazz what ever you want to call it. The last three selections are from an earlier session recorded on December 8, 1957. The line-up on these selections consists of Clifford Jordan on tenor, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Paul Chambers on bass & Pete La Roca on drums. These last three selections are also Clark originals. Jordan's big tenor sound and Burrell's guitar give this session a unique sound. It is a nice contrast to first line-up on this recording. This recording really gives insight into his abilities as a composer as well as a pianist. In my opinion Sonny Clark is definitely one artist who was deserving of more recognition. Thankfully, Blue Note has reissued so much of his work so that people can hear what a great jazz artist he was. I would recommend Cool Struttin', Leapin' & Lopin' or Sonny's Crib ahead of My Conception, but from my viewpoint any Sonny Clark record is worth adding to your collection.

Enter Grind.......2006-09-09
Song 2 is called Grind Box which should tell you the band has added grind to thier Death Style . The Vocals are real gutteral and sick . Lots of Blastbeats , Good Doodling Grind riffage , Doomy slow death parts , I still think Broken Hope is a Hardcore Band Name , Broken Windpipe , or Broken Scull Chunks , would be more of what they're about :>)
Not repuslive it's brilliance.......2005-10-29
Whoa now where to begin with this. How about the fact that this is probably one of my favorite death metal disc's to date. But for me to completely subside this as my favorite would take a lot more than it's already stealth and brutal performance. For those that do not know Broken Hope were one of the true underground death metal bands of the early 90's. Repulsive Conception was the release that lead them away the more gore ridden and delved into a deep perspective in writing and at a caliber of brutality that only Broken Hope can unleash. This is too hard for me to call my favorite release from Broken Hope, as all of there releases are nothing short of gems. The vocals are still as guttural as ever, the guitars are still haunting and thick chunks vomiting the procreation of what death metal stands for. The drums are fast and blast away to each track. I really enjoy Broken Hope so much, because they definitely know how to play! I love guitar solos, and they include with no problem. This is technical and brutal death metal. Plus it has that 90's feel to it, that newer death/grind bands know nothing about. These guys are true to the music they play, and it damn well shows. I cannot get over the rhythm and melody that each track encompasses, this is great. I am on a whim here, but seriously Broken Hope deserve all respect. I would say the stand out tracks to me are Dilation and Extraction, Erotic Zoophilism, For only the Sick and Pitbull Grin. I also find the acoustic guitar instrumentals that surround the album, a welcoming contribution. A lot of the subject matter in the disc, is a lot of vile stuff, but it also has some substance, something very few other bands really take part of. I personally think each Broken Hope disc is definitely worth owning, but if I had to choose I would pick Swamped in Gore. But don't let that mislead you, this disc is flawless at almost all counts. Oh and it's definitely worth the guest vocals of a pittbull, you will see what I mean.
Old School Death Meets New School... DEATH!.......2002-12-17
The words sick, repulsive, inhumane, and grotesque cannot even begin to describe the content of this release by Chicago's own,
Broken Hope. This band is no frills, no nonsense death metal! There are none of the goth/black influences or dark vibes presented by a lot of today's bands, just splatter-happy carnage delivered by five very sick gentlemen.
If you dig true death metal with no added ingredients, Broken Hope is the band for you and "Repulsive Conception" is one volatile album that is a must have for all metallers!
ha-ha.......2002-09-27
This a hard and grinding cd. Pitbull grin is my favorite song on this loud and hard album. I enjoy the lood on my mothers face when I blash this cd in my stereo in my foom.
I'll burn with satan.......2002-09-26
My mome yells at me everytime I listen to my death metal. This no execption. My favorite song on here is bull dog grin. This album has a lot grind to hit. Not the exact rythem to bang your head to but hard.

DJs have blended their favorite 12-inch singles onto mix tapes for years, but it wasn't until the mid 1990s that the mixes started getting pressed onto CDs with the blessings of the original artists on a regular basis. The Walkman Rotation compilation features 14 tracks' worth of (largely) Seattle-area hip-hop mixed together by J-Rocc of the Beat Junkies--winners of the International Turntablists Federation crown in 1997--and it's a remarkably tight collection of beats and rhymes. J-Rocc does a great job with his mix, but he's got solid material to work with; the beats are consistently innovative, and these MCs have good voices--and they know the meaning of flow. While there are no bum tracks here, Eclipse's two contributions, "World Premiere" and "My Position," are clearly the standouts. --Randy Silver

a rare (?) treat from the funky president.......2007-01-19
never thought I'd find any results when i asked the amazon-robots to find me a j-rocc cd, but boyee was I pleasantly surprised. This is a slice of some quality North Pacific Coast homespun hip-hop that is blended by one of the best DJs around. Being a Cali kid, I didn't know what to expect from our neighbors to el norte, but after listening to Walkman Rotation I now know they bring the real. An excellent mix for people wanting to break the mold of commercial (aka garbage) hiphop and see what else real heads have to offer.
A reaction from the fusion of Beat Junkies + NW Lyricists.......1999-10-26
When you combine the talent of NW lyricists, beat jugglin', and a tight production the outcome in this case was fluid. Artists featured on this release are as follows: J-Rocc, Eclipse, Arcee, Jake One, Mr. Supreme, Kutfather, Fourfifiths, DJ Ace, Samson & Swift, Carl Johnson, Third Degree, & Diamond Mercenaries. J-Rocc sets off the rotation with an intro that could make a man with no rhythm feel it, with "Somethin' Funky For Your Walkman". Pay attention to the beat jugglin', mixin', and blendin' when you've got a Beat Junkie @ the wheels. J-Rocc is your host for your ride 'round the turntalbes with some of Conceptions finest. The first lyricist featured on this compilation is Ohio's MC Eclipse. He puts down two tracks, "World Premier" which features the mic veteran Arcee and "My Position" a track which clearly states where he stands. Seattle's own Samson & Swift show how they do it in the cut "Watch Your Words", a straight forward message for those of you who want in on this industry. Mr Supreme lays it down on the joint "Any Last Words" this track features 3D of the Diamond Mercenaries. A versatile artist is every labels dream, Jake One just might be that one for Conception. He showcases live lyrics in "Essay On Pseudo-ism" which also features Arcee.

A more seductive Queensryche .......2005-04-23
Gosh, this album seems to break all the rules... Especially considering these dudes are from Norway - the black metal capital of the world. Furthermore, "Flow" is a far cry from the band's previous efforts, sampling from a bleeding palette, painting a very grotesque concept of stylish cyber-metal.
Their bohemian style of play reminds of a cross between Queensryche and _________? Hell, I don't know. I want to say Hogarth-era Marillion, but that's only partially accurate; because a.) that implies a progressive direction, and "Flow" certainly isn't progressive per se, and b.) Hogarth-era Marillion doesn't account for the aura of darkness that envelopes the music. Hell, there's no warmth here; in fact, "Flow" has an icy sterility about it that partially explains its Norwegian birthright.
In any case, as Robert Pontzer so aptly described, the properties of Conception's brilliance can be boiled down to two entities: vocalist Roy Khantatat (known simply as Khan in Kamelot) and guitarist Tory Ostby (Ark). Khan is truly one of all-time greats. His voice is remarkably seductive (ala Christian Death's Rozz Williams), so technically flawless... He explores the meat of the vocal spectrum with such expertise, never sounding outrageous, creating some of the most memorable vocal melodies in metal. Conveniently, guitarist Tory Ostby, possesses equal musical prowess... His style is very fluid, very provocative... Though his characteristic Latin flirtations have been dispelled this time around. Instead he experiments with simpler riffs, working for a "crunchier" sound, laying the groundwork for atmospheric cyber-keys and subtle choir crooning, forging for a fresher sound and heightened accessibility.
Again, I will reiterate what Mr. Pontzer has already told us: Ostby shows a truly remarkable level of restraint.
Anyway, this is not a release all metal peeps will be comfortable with. It's one of those albums you either love or hate.
The perfect fusion of pop and metal sensibilities.......2002-12-31
"Flow" is the 1997 album from Norwegian melodic metal outfit Conception, and their last. Conception released 4 metal masterpieces in the 90's on the strength of their exceptional songwritings and 2 incredible talents: vocalist Roy Khan and guitarist Tore Ostby, now of Kamelot and ARK respectively. "Flow" was a departure for Conception. Their previous albums had been heavier, the songs more elaborate and progressive with lots of guitar shredding. "Flow" showcased a more accessible, sleeker sound. The songs are shorter and simpler, with less guitar soloing. The songs have a definate pop influence and radio-ready sound. This is not a detriment however. This is accessible music done right. The melodies are compelling, the arrangements intelligent. Also, the production is absolutely perfect. Everything is crisp, clear and powerful. In a perfect world, this album would have been a smash. It is really quite a visionary release as it took metal in a new direction. It's a shame Conception broke up after this album due to lack of commercial success. However, the members of the band have gone onto excellent bands like Kamelot and ARK. Roy Khan is one of the best singers in metal, with a silky smooth tone and middle range. He has exceptionally phrasing and delivery. Tore Ostby is nothing less than a virtuoso guitarist. He has one of the most distinctive styles in metal that incorporates many influences, such as Latin music and thrash metal. He plays with remarkable restraint on "Flow", shortening his solos and simplifying the riffs in order to craft perfect pop songs.
I must admit that I did not like this album very much at first. It is certainly not a conventional metal album. I had heard nothing like it before. But after several listens, the quality of the songwriting really hit me. It's a great album for the adventurous metal listener, and should also be able to appeal to a lot of non-metal listeners.
"Gethsemane" is my favorite song from the album and opens the album perfectly. It's a slinky, sleak, slithering and sexy song. It opens with a creative tom-tom pattern and lush, atmospheric keyboards. Roy Khan contributes a passionate, incredible, beautiful vocal performance: one of my favorites! He really puts on exceptional performance, full of emotion, technical prowess and that special timbre he has. The chorus is sublimely crafted, with its swirling guitar riff and instantly memorable vocal melodies. The bridge is simply amazing with its guitar soloing and Roy Khan's building power. "You will deny me again forever. As long as I'm bound to be here. Softly caressing the pain, learning... We all have a cross to bear. We all have a reason to die. A reason to leave all the worries and fly."
"Angel (Come Walk With Me)" is a very unique song. This is another slinky, sexy song featuring a repetative, simplistic guitar riff. Roy Khan sings the verse in a very erotic manner, whispering and mumbling and moaning. The chorus, however, is the highlight. A lush multi-tracked chorus sings one line, while Roy Khan whispers vocals between those lines. It is a stunning juxtaposition.
"A Virtual Lovestory" is about a man obsessed with a woman he met online. He yearns to meet her in the flesh. This song features a sparse soundscape of simplistic bass and electronics before exploding into the chorus with its frantic guitar and processed vocals.
The title track "Flow" is a gem. It's infectious guitar riff and sultry groove are entrancing. "Flow into your mind. Embracing like a mother's womb. Flow and you will find. Forgotten pictures of the moon." Tore Ostby contributes a short but blistering guitar solo.
"Cry" is a ballad that starts of extremely softly with acoustic guitars and slow synths with Roy Khan's gentle crooning. The song slowly builds with bubbling electronics and electric guitar.
"Reach Out" is a solid rocker featuring some suprisingly gruff verses by Roy Khan. This song incorporates an almost urban hip-hop vibe in the electronics and percussion.
"Tell Me When I'm Gone" is the only song I don't like from this album. Conception always includes a very slow, sludgy, doom/stoner metal song on its albums, and I usually don't like them. This song reminds me of one of Soundgarden's slower songs.
"Hold On" is an extremely fragile ballad featuring nothing but harpsichord, violin and Roy Khan's elegant vocals. This is the farthest thing from metal, and is extremely light, but the song is ethereal and uplifting. The chorus is very beautiful. "Won't you hold on and we'll be forgiven. Just you hold on, I'll always be there for you."
"Cardinal Sin" is the fastest and heaviest song from the album, and also exceptionally catchy. The chorus is one of the best I have ever heard, it soars. This is a adrenaline-pumping song that is great for driving or other activities. The pulsing bass and crisp drumming drive this song along.
"Would It Be The Same" ends the album with its immaculate multi-tracked vocal chorus and pulsating electronics. "Like I'm guilty. Like I'm sad. I must fight to be lonely. To break the chain."
Amazing.......2002-03-03
i am really amazed at this album. its been classified as melodic prog metal, i think it does have some of those qualities, but i also think that it is just good music in general. Kahn is an amazing singer, i really did not realize this from his work with kamelot. I dont think that he is in the right band for his style and range. Tore is an amazing guitarist, but i did know this from his work with a band he formed called ark. It is to bad that Conception broke up, i really think that flow was a jump in the right direction from them, even though i did think in your multitude was also really great. You should get this album, not only because it rocks but because it is just an amazing piece of work that shows how good a band could be.
Wow!.......2001-08-30
What it is: melodic metal. Some may say "progressive" but whatever the category, it is pure enjoyment to listen to. If you like metal but are not averse to some lighter melody intertwined with it, you will totally be in awe. The composition & structure are masterful. These are some of the best written songs I've ever listened to of ANY music. Yes, they are that good. Cardinal Sin is my favorite cut, but all are completely worthy. The musicianship is superb, and Kahn's voice is a well crafted instrument rather than just being a mediocre means of presenting the lyrics.
EXCELLENT!!.......2001-07-07
This is one of those rare progmetal CDs that is definitely progressive, has phenomenal musicianship (and Roy Khan's great vocals), yet somehow is extremely "listenable". Unlike a lot of progmetal, this disc grabs you instantly, and friends who don't typically like progmetal will be asking to borrow it (and you'll have trouble getting it back!!). Sadly, this was their last release, but the vocalist (Roy Khan) is now in Kamelot and the guitarist is in Ark (Tore ?), both of which are very good, but I still prefer Conception.
