A Fine Interpretation of Elgar's 1st Symphony.......2001-08-29

I am sure that this fine Telarc recording was one of those which gained favorable attention for Maestro Zinman and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Certainly the quality of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's performance is as fine as any you'd expect from a great American or European orchestra. Zinman gives a fine reading of Elgar's scores; both he and his orchestra give a warm, vibrant performance as splendid as any I have heard from Andre Previn and his British orchestras. Again, Telarc has to be commended for its excellent sound quality, easily rivalling its more expensive European competition.

Elgar is a difficult composer to evaluate fairly. He has charming music, great taste, but something seems missing. Here we do not get any clue as to how great a creator Elgar was, but we do hear through Mr. Zinamn direction that he is a composer worthwhile keeping in touch with. The beginning of the first symphony teases us; but we never reach the satisfaction that was promised in the first measures. Yes, it is a pleasant and elegiac piece, with its good moment. But if you want some bite you should look elsewhere like in the cello concerto or the Enigma Variations. The question is why do I come back to this symphony regularly? I think Mr. Zinman did achieve something here: he shows us that if the work is a restful piece, perhaps nearing blandness at times, it still has enough grandeur and complexity to hold our interest. As good as it gets for this piece. Mr. Zinman actually outdoes himself in the accompanying work: the over heard and over used Pomp and Circumstances. By eschewing easy effects and pomposity he restores some dignity to the March No. 1, in the process making us realize that we could listen to it at more important occasions than Junior High Graduations.... After all it was written for an Empire Glories and not as a self esteem booster, though perhaps that later use is more commendable than the extolling of Colonial might......

Most compilations of composers works usually only feature, at best, maybe one or two works in recordings that are of outstanding quality, especially if different artists are featured. Such is absolutely not the case with this collection, one of the finest of its sort ever issued.

This box makes a perfect one stop shopping choice for the major, most-well-known works the British composer Sir Edward Elgar. The title is misleading though. The box, on 8 CDs at an incredible price, contains both Orchestral AND Choral works.

The reviewer from Shaumburg is absolutely correct in his or her review: the sound of these discs is magnificent and the organ, used in a few tracks, is very "cool" (if that word may be used). If you haven't heard the Pomp Marches in their entirety, here's a great way to do so; all are great compositions. And don't let the inexpensive cost deter you--the recording is luxurious and worth triple the price!

Excellent recording, abundant music, superb value........2002-05-03

This recording is generous in its musical offerings. At mid-price (really super-bargain price on a per disc basis) you get a spendidly recorded and performed account of both symphonies and the marches as fillers. While there are slightly stronger Elgar couplings of the two symphonies with additional pieces (such as Solti on a Decca Double Decker and Previn on a Philips Duo) this set is thoroughly recommendable among the best Elgar recordings available.

Conductor Andrew Davis suffers from occasional bouts with that dreaded British bug--chronic dullness. He's not by any means a bad conductor, but you can always tell when he feels energized by the music he's playing or recording. Elgar is one of his great loves; that much is clear. These are his second recordings of the two symphonies, and they are excellent in every respect. Davis shapes both with a firm hand and a clear view of his final destination. Teldec's recorded sound is especially fine, naturally encompassing the extremes of Elgar's rich orchestration without unnatural spotlighting. At two discs for the price of one, this set is a great deal. --David Hurwitz

Teldec have now repackaged Andrew Davis's views on the two Elgar symphonies. The recordings come from two different sessions, and I think this shows. The first symphony (on disc 1) is given a performance that is somewhere between good and very good; it is straightforward but ultimately lacking in any special qualities. The coupled marches similarly are quite well done. Maybe the rather dry acoustic of Barking Town Hall in East London had something to do with it.

The version of the second has been generally praised in the UK, and Davis moves up a notch here with a performance to rank with the best, although for me Barbirolli isn't quite matched. In the South also comes over very well, and the church used for the recording of these two works imparts a greater sense of atmosphere than in the works in disc 1. Overall, it could be argued that the set is very worth having just for the second symphony and the overture. If you take this view, you will get a presentable first as a bonus.
