Album Description
This year has been a busy one for rock guitar virtuoso Steve Morse. In addition to his heavy touring schedule with Deep Purple and his own Steve Morse Band, he found time to record "Major Impacts 2", a successor to his stellar Magna Carta debut, 2000's "Major Impacts".
Widely hailed as an innovative alternative to the more standard tribute album, Morse's "Major Impacts 2" concept sees him paying tribute to his influences -- not with direct covers but with original tracks that recall the style of his heroes, filtered through his own interpretive sheen. Not only does it showcase his incredible versatility and inventiveness as a guitar player, composer and interpreter, it also provides a window into how he became the guitar player he is today.
"When Magna Carta came to me with the idea, I liked it immediately because it was such a challenge," Morse recalls. So many people do tribute albums where they simply cover the songs, but this was so totally different: I didn't want to fall into the trap of being derivative, so I tried to come up with a few things that would identify a style and what that artist or composer has meant to me."
In deciding whom to pay homage to on the record he deliberately avoided targeted research, choosing instead to rely purely on his long-term musical memory. As such, we hear flavors of bluegrass and Cajun music Morse heard as a teenager in Georgia (he even plays his grandfather's fiddle on one track, "Ghost of the Bayou"); the swinging '60s sound of The Yardbirds and The Hollies ("12 Strings on Carnaby St."); Bach counterpoint ("Air on a 6 String"); guitar interpretations of Keith Emerson's organ playing ("Organically Grown") and Steven Tyler's distinctive vocal style ("Errol Smith").
Like its predecessor, "Major Impacts 2" features the guitarist's regular collaborators and Steve Morse Band members: bassist Dave LaRue and drummer/percussionist Van Romaine. Morse, who also played all keyboard parts and violin, produced the album, his third on Magna Carta.
Founding member of the fusion rock band, Dixie Dregs, and a member of Deep Purple since 1996, Morse adheres to the notion that his approach to playing and writing hasn't changed over the years, despite the many hats he wears and style bases he covers. Indeed, it's his chameleon-like musicianship that is captured so perfectly on the multi-faceted "Major Impacts 2".
Customer Reviews:
You can't hate this album........2005-09-06
Even if you're not a rock fan, this album is a really good asset to almost any collection. I think this is especially enjoyable for guitar players who can appreciate the brilliant playing involved.
I can't pick favorites but I really love Air on a 6 String. It's a guitar solo in the style of Bach and you can tell. I printed out a tab to this and it's a lot of fun to play and a lot of fun to hear. You can even play it for your grandma.
I even really like the Tri County Barn Dance, and I hate country and I'm not a fan of blue grass.
The track called "Where Are You" is one that really sticks out to me as being one that he really hit the nail on the head as far as trying to sound like a band. That sounds like the lost Who song to me.
I'm going by memory here because I don't have the cd with me but another I remember thinking was great was "Motor City Spirit," impacted by Nugent, Deep Purple, and Spirit. Even before I read the sleeve on the inside, I recognized that lead as a tribute to Ritchie Blackmore playing Highway Star. The guitar solo on Highway star wasn't that impressive to me but I don't think Blackmore is that good. But Steve made the style awesome.
Just an over all great album. I can really relax to the slow songs and drum my desk to the hard rock ones. Just buy this album and listen to it any time you want.
Fairly decent but..............2004-07-12
As a guitarist/teacher, I've been a Steve Morse fan for a long time, mostly from the Dreggs. He is still quite the musician, but this cd lacks backup players, lacks material, and mostly lacks ENGINEERING!! It is poorly recorded for the most part, no sizzle, no punch, and drums that sound like they were recorded in a garage....certainly no challenge for any stereo system. I thought Magna Carta was a much better company that this production proves. The cd is borderline listenable....with a few decent tracks mixed in. C'mon Steve...you can do MUCH better than this!! You are still THE MAN....even though this cd doesn't prove it.
When will Amazon let us choose 6 stars ?.......2004-06-18
One of the really fun things about Major impacts 1& 2 is seeing your guitar hero as a 'fan' .. seeing him as a guy who is humble enough to look at someone else's innovation and talent, and recognise it as such; to be able to picture him at the front of a gig doing all the stupid things we all do when the mood takes us.
Steve Morse is humble enough to make more than a passing nod to his influences. Major Impacts is not "Oh, I listened to a great deal of 'Howling Racket' when I was younger" and the implication being, "and of course I have left them far behind in the phosphorescent wake of my own talent". With Steve, we have someone who pays true homage to his heroes and influences, and not just lip service in order to win 'brownie points'.
The style of this album, as is noted elsewhere, is very much unresearched ... it seems to come over without a plan .. a bit like our own record collections and memories, and is all the better and fresher for it.
As for the music, from the first bars of Wooden Music, it was clear that Steve has put more energy and an even higher level of compositional skill into this second batch of influences. There are only a few moments of "typical Morse", and that, to me, is a REAL bonus ... let me explain.
The problem with instrumentalists and instrumentals is that over the course of 15 or so albums, the repeating of any phrases, tones and chords sequences is going to be noticable .. much more so than in a song, where words and lyrics take the place of the solo instrument. Whilst Steve has created more diversity and innovation in his music than most other players out there today, over 15 or so albums, there is always a tendancy to say "oh, that is the same phrase as "Marco Polo" or " thats the same riff from "Battle Lines"
Not so with this record, and HUGE credit to Steve for that ...
If anyone has a rack full of Steve Morse records ( going back to the brilliance of "What If" ) and has any sort of sympathy with the feeling, "Well, I have 15 Dregs/Morse records, perhaps I can give this one a miss" ... DON'T.
From Bach ( sheer brilliance ) to the Bayou, this record is fresh, energetic, exciting and represents just about the pinnacle of Steve's innovation and writing skills.
I would love to meet this guy .. my true 'hero' and an inspiration. Thanks for putting the effort into becoming this brilliant at what you do.
How does this guy keep doing it?.......2004-05-15
I've been a fan of Steve Morse since 1978, when I first hear the Dixie Dregs' "What If" on a 8-track my cousin had. This guy is absolulely amazing. "Major Impacts 2" is no exception to his tradition of musical excellence. The Hammond B3 patches on "Organically Grown", the CSN vibe on "Wooden Music", I could go on and on but he captures everything he attempts perfectly. Yeah, he's a monster guitarist, one of the best electric guitarists ever, but he also is an excellent composer. Listen to the interplay of instruments on his records versus some of the other "shred" guys. Oh, they can play fast, but few, if any, musicians who just happen to play guitar can touch Steve Morse.
Do yourself a favor. Buy this CD, turn your stereo to "11" and prepared to be amazed!!!
Happy to hear this stuff!.......2004-04-17
I've been a SM fan since 1980. I've got everything he's done including (what I consider to be)the ill-fated Kansas stuff. So, like any fanatic, I've got to get the latest. And this is the GREATEST! The subtlety and strength is amazing. I'm a keyboard guy green with envy. Not to mention that Steve covers most of my main influences. Steve, artistry in the age of Britney is not rewarded other that by my abject praise. Keep it up. History, if not the market, will reward you.

'Guitars That Rule The World,Volume 2:Smell The Fuzz' - V/A.......2004-10-03
I usually don't care for guitar oriented/various artist CD's,but this one was different.I find myself giving it a spin more often than usual. The tunes that I liked best were Victor(Alex Lifeson of Rush)'s "Strip And Go Naked",the smoking Ace Frehley's "Cherokee Boogie",Robert Fripp's "Sunset Collage" and J.Yuenger(White Zombie)'s "Blues For 2-XL".'Guitars That Rule...' assembles some truly outstanding tracks, that I'm not even sure if a consumer can find on any other release.Exclusive music always gives you another reason to get a copy of a title as such.
Fuzzy, but not Guitar Hero stuff..........2003-08-04
I think that people who buy this album is expecting a full barrage of guitar playing, but the only tracks I really liked were the Hellecasters, the Unheard Of (featuring Ralph Santolla, and a couple other death metal players) and Billy Sheehan's track (and he's not even a guitarist!).
This CD was made with a lot of commercial stuff in mind featuring White Zombie's J, and Billy Corgan. As well as Alex Lifeson doing a strange track not complacent with his Rush years.
Overall I gave this CD a 3 because it is not comparable to the first volume, however, the Unheard OF and Billy Sheehan tracks COMPLETELY satisfy my Guitar Hero fix for the day.
Excellent Solo Guitar Album.......1999-04-15
This is a fine solo guitar album. Spanning the playfulness of the Hellecaster's Disintonation, the fuzzy motion sickness inducing Blues For 2-XL by J. Yuenger, and the overpowering crunch of Ace Frehley on Cherokee Boogie, Smell the Fuzz should be an exciting listen for any electric guitar fan. Another highlight is the incredible speed of three death metal guitarists on Unheard Of's Explosion. Although some songs left me feeling unsatisfied, this CD spends more time in my stereo than Guitars that Rule the World, Vol. 1.
The first G.T.R.T.W. is hundred time more better ..........1999-02-15
I heard the first ¨Guitare that rule the world¨,and I rate it 5 star, but the second vol.sound so fuzzy that it isn't rock n'roll at all. This one spoiled the rock n'roll spirit!

ORO! (GOLD).......2007-06-17
Tommy Bolin FRom the archives vol # 2.......2006-03-05
Was very impressed. I had the CD with 2 days. Would do alot of business him him.
A collection of gems.......2005-06-13
This is a must have for all Tommy Bolin fans. The album has quite a few acoustic demos which are raw and realy display the lovely voice and natural guitar ability,
Some realy rocking numbers are there as well. Even a couple of his jazz rock 'Zypher' alternate takes are there.
One realy great album with all songs showing the talant of Tommy.
Not to miss this one as good as any of his best.
ANOTHER HEALTHY SERVING OF THE MAN.......2000-03-06
Just as From The Archives Vol 1. left off, From The Archives Vol 2. picks up. Another great and excellent quality collection of Tommy Bolin songs to feed all those hungry fans druelling for more. In between Vol 1. and Vol 2. the Tommy Bolin Archives released about 5 other Tommy CD's exculsively through the fan club so check that out. On this release we have the same pattern as on before, 5 acoustic numbers being the highlight odf this collection. Alexis, Celebration, Slow Driver, Love Home and Gypsy Moon show Tommy's nakedness with just him and a guitar. Beautiful songs by the way. ANother treat are some early demos Tommy was recording to fetch a solo deal and these songs wound up on his first solo album Teaser. The title track, Dreamer and The Grind are presented in raw and rockin' form. A unique song on here is a James Gang instrumental demo called Journey, and Tommy does a demo of another future James Gang song, called Alexis, another fine piece. This is another great collection of unreleased Bolin stuff. Long Live The Man!
Tommy Bolin's basement tapes.......1998-07-15
What an outstanding job the Tommy Bolin archives has done in presenting this material to the public. The follow up to archives vol I delivers such tasty moments as an in your face reading of "teaser", an acoustic version of "alexis", a James Gang demo preformance of "journey" which later became "marching powder" and much more. This material has been on the shelf over 20 years and we know somebody is smiling up there now that its finally available.

Customer Reviews:
Masterful work from Uli!.......2001-12-05
How in the world anyone would rate this CD as one star is just amazing! True, there are a couple classical numbers that I find less enjoyable than the remainder of the songs. But to say Uli plays them in a mediocre fashion is just bull! He's friggin brilliant.
Uli plays an awesome version of Voodoo Chile here as well as a great updated recording of his classic Earthquake. These are great songs, but it is the very diverse and masterful quality of the other 23 numbers that gives this collection such listenable staying power. TSG is a profoundly impressive listen for any true Uli fan. Check it out and enjoy.
Skeletons in the closet ý maybe they should be left thereý.......2001-08-11
Uli is as good as any guitarist when he is at his best. Prologue to the Symphonic Legends and Beyond the Astral Skies are two of the greatest CDs ever made. It is as if Mozart and Jimi Hendrix had a kid and the kid was Uli.
Unfortunately this CD is a bizarre mish mash of junk Uli has recorded over the years. Some of it is interesting, like the first song, but a lot of it is boring, like the classical covers. Like the other reviewer said, who cares if Uli can do a mediocre rendition of a Vivaldi piece on the electric guitar. If you can't play it extremely well, or you can't do something innovative with it (other than just playing it on the electric guitar), you are better off working in your home studio doing the sequel to Prologue to the Symphonic Legends.
Uli is not the most productive musician around, with just three CD releases in the last 16 years. Let's just hope he is hard at work on his second symphonic masterpiece. Then all will be forgiven.

Play It Loud!.......2001-08-09
This CD rocks! Hoey is an amazing guitarist, and this CD captures his range of playing. From rockabilly to metal to jazz, Hoey nails them all. His choice of style reflects the mood of the song. Could the menacing "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" be played in anything other than hard rock? "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" conjures images of a sock hop Christmas party. My teenagers wonder why I'm listening to Christmas music in July, but they don't complain when I crank up the volume.

Stick with volume one!!.......2006-07-14
Although the show is from the same night as volume one,it just doesnt floor you as the chops-fest that Vol.one is.You get the feeling that these were leftover songs that werent good enough for the first volume.Dont get me wrong Paul and Bruce still put most guitar players in other bands to shame, but it just didnt do it for me in terms of what I always listened to Racer X for!!!Long Live Shred Guitar
Racer X - 'Live Extremes,Volume 2' (Shrapnel).......2004-12-01
Before this,I didn't know that much about the band except they were much of a club favorite in the Los Angeles area from 1986-88.The group apparently featured guitarist Paul Gilbert before he had joined Mr.Big.They released three worthy lp's in the timespan I just mentioned. After that, several compilation and live discs happened to surface, like this one.Personally,I know people that really might enjoy 'Live...' more than I did. It's a decent live recording, but then I ALWAYS enjoy a live CD.A couple of the tunes that I thought carried their own are "On The Loose","Heart Of A Lion","Give It To Me" and their Kiss cover of "Detroit Rock City".Simply an under appreciated hard rock band that never got a big break.Might appeal to fans of Joe Satriani,Alcatrazz and possibly Yngwie.Come on,take a chance.
Musings.......2003-11-27
Having read all of the previous reviews, I'm somewhat perplexed. Both of the Live Extreme Volume albums were recorded on the same night, same band, same sound crew. The only differences between them is that Volume 2 was mixed and mastered better.
Volume 1 is excellent, but the overall tone has too much treble and not enough mid range and bass. This was fixed for Volume 2.
As for track selection, remember Vol 2 came out 4 years later, so what wasn't already released was used. Actually if you listen close you can hear Jeff say, "Mr. Paul Gilbert on the guitar, let's have a hand" on both albums during separate songs.
Overall one of the best live albums ever released. Highlight tracks: Hammer Away, Heart Of A Lion, Poison Eyes, Sunlit Nights, On The Loose & Detroit Rock City.
would have been a 5 star review but..........2003-06-22
I've loved this band since I first descovered them back in the mid 80's. While while "Extreme Volume II Live" show the band in top form, the transfer to cd is not the best... good enough though. The playing is imaculate and all of the beand's members went on to other things... Paul Gilbert of course went on to form Mr. Big and also have a successful solo career, Scott Travis went on the become Judas Priest's Drummer, Jeff Martin became the drummer for Badlands, (Voodoo Highway and Dusk), and more recently the drummer w/ The Plot, (feat. Micheal Schenker-gtrs. and Pete Way- bass), John Alderete and Bruce Bouillet formed The Scream w/ John Corabi, (one time Motley Crue singer0, and remain active in the music biz. Of course, all but Bruce continue to write, record, and perform as Racer X to this day. I recomend this to anyone who love the over the top speed of light virtuosity of the late 80's and (very) early 90's when people really bothered to learn to play their instuments intstead of just using them as props. This should really get 5 stars but the transfer cuts one star off... and it really isn't that bad... buy iy and play it often... loud!!!
EV 2 Rocks.......2001-10-10
Contrary to the first review, Extreme Volume II is no less than Extreme Volume. What's strange is Mr. Munoz says this CD is lacking energy. How could one CD have Energy and another CD Lack energy when the recording is the same and the show was the same? It's impossible. Extreme Volume II is simply the "other songs" not on Extreme Volume. Granted, EV has all the indivdual solos, but frankly, EVII has the better songs with Heart Of Lion, Moonage Daydream, Hammer Away and the best non-KISS version of Detroit Rock City. The classic Ace Frehley solo is played in harmony by Paul and Bruce with their TEETH!! How much more energy do you want?

Customer Reviews:
lots of fun, better phrasing than volume 1.......2005-05-04
i like this record mostly. my absolute favorite on here is the giuliani grand overture op.61...romero's playing here is absolutely goregous...breathtaking. also exceptional are the mudarra and the rodrigo and scarlatti. its only like 7 bucks so just buy it. some people complained of weird phrasing on vol. 1 of this series, but i am glad to say that this problem isnt really present here. the only thing that i dislike really is guardame las vacas...i feel that he sacrafices good phrasing for the sake of a display of speed...such playing isnt needed for a traditional piece like this.

Customer Reviews:
Vastly better than the average "unplugged" album.......2006-09-07
I was quite pleased to listen to Belewprints: The Acoustic Adrian Belew, Vol. 2. While stripped of the usual technical gadgetry of most of Belew's rock and alternative releases, what is not missing is the splendor of these songs in an unvarnished style that is still 100% Belew.
Among the tracks that never tire the ear are "I Remember How To Forget", "Big Blue Sun" and the King Crimson song "Dinosaur." Also effervescent are his sound tableaus, "Things You Hit With A Stick" (his experimental percussion piece), "Return of the Chicken" as well as "Nude Wrestling With A Christmas Tree" which blends the other two experimental tracks.
I would liken this offering to dim sum--a little of pretty much everything that Belew has attempted in his musical career, all of it an adventure in terms of both style and substance. Of course, I could not forget to mention the inclusion of Belew's live version of John Lennon's song, "Free As A Bird." This track shows that Belew can bring such sweet music to life while sounding quite Lennonesque. After all, Belew began his musical career as a member of the Denems, which performed covers of Beatles songs. His appreciation for their musical legacy sparked a most brilliant career.
I cannot consider a music collection complete without this wonderful album. It is worth more than just a casual listen. To me, the best music needs a sense of the eclectic, and Belewprints definitely qualifies as such.
Great acoustic versions........2005-07-14
"Belewprints" is billed as "The Acoustic Adrian Belew, Volume Two", but its a bit different than the first one. The first record (seemingly impossible to find these days) featured pieces with Belew playing acoustic guitar and vocals only, this record features more arranged pieces, with the constraint that all the instruments had to be acoustic (with one exception). Pianos, acoustic basses, drums, layers of acoustic guitars, and so on, all find their way onto this record
In general ,the material takes well to the rearrangement, Belew's music has a lyrical quality to it that can often get obscured below the usual layers of distortion and guitar noises. He also seems to have a penchant for picking pieces I rather enjoy for these acoustic records. Highlights include the string-quartet-and-vocal arrangement of "Men In Helicopters", the first recording of the "lounge" version of "Cage" (which King Crimson would feature in their 2000 tour), a just breathtaking "Everything") and a brilliant take on King Crimson's "Dinosaur". But really, just about everything on here is pretty good.
It's not quite the delicate masterpiece volume one was, but its an awfully good record, definitely worth checking out.

Customer Reviews:
Not enough of a novelty.......2002-06-02
There are millions of Christmas albums out there--why would I get this one?
The only reason I can think of would be for the novelty. I'd heard a couple of Hoey's more intense Christmas songs (Grinsch, and Joy to the World) via "illegal" file sharing and thought it would be cool to make my parents listen to my Christmas music after listening to their lifeless drivel all those years growing up. I purchased "Ho Ho Hoey" 2 and 3 from amazon. Unfortunately this CD seems to have more than it's fair share of lifeless drivel. I guess I'll have to make a compilation CD of the few good songs and be happy with that.
I guess it depends on what your expectation for the CD are. I'll probably buy one of Hoey's real CD's one of these days because he is a fantastic guitar player. This just strikes me as a novelty disc with a staggering lack of novelty.
It's good stuff!.......2001-12-09
Gary Hoey has carved himself out a great niche in the world of guitar-instrumentalists. It's a shame that his original material doesn't get as much attention, but, this stuff is definitely great. And as much as I HATE christmas music, I can listen to this disc! That's saying something right there! If you [dislike the] Xmas music that's out there, this is a great alternative for you.
More great Christmas jams.......1999-11-27
Gary Hoey's second Christmas cd is as good, as varied and as much fun as his first one was. There's the heavy metal "Deck the Halls", the Chuck Berry-ish "Rockin' Around the X-mas Tree", the jazzy "The Christmas Song", the appropriately aggressive "Mr. Grinch", John Lennon's "Happy Xmas/Give Peace a Chance" and many more fun takes on Christmas standards. The only knock might be trying to mix in an original tune among all the familiar melodies. But that's a minor detail. If you want to boost the energy level of your holiday cd collection, you can't do much better than this. Feliz Navidad!
awesome ,for the rock fan in the christmas mood!.......1998-12-12
