A highly desirable set.......2004-01-27

There is a lot of competition out there. The big Paavo Berglund box set seems to have it all on EMI. Then, there is the excellent Davis/BSO set on Philips - not to mention his newer LSO cycle on RCA. Rattle has some unique touches not found in other cycles so he can't not be easily dismissed. He's a bitter smoother around the edges as compared to the Davis/BSO. But he brings out the romantism more. The Birmingham forces play wonderfully and are all excellently recorded - in fact - better engineered than any of the competition.
Perhaps to make this set more competitive (because it is rather expensive), EMI should have tried to squeeze all 7 of the symphonies onto 3 discs. I always felt that Philips should have done the same for Davis/BSO set. That way, the price could have been trimmed down to under $30.
(All the same, it makes one wish that Ormandy and Karajan should have completed their Sibelius cycles during their lifetimes!)

My favourite cycle of Sibelius symphonies. I have listened to Gibson, Karajan, Bernstein, Rattle but non have the passion of Jarvi and the GSO. The playing is as always great from the GSO and it is surprising that is not considered one of the major orchestras around - policies I suppose. My favourites include Nos 1, 3 and 7, but the crown of the set is in my mind an exceptional "Kullervo". I think of "Kullervo" part of a great "trilogy" also including "The Tempest" and Tchaikovsky's "Manfred". After Kajanus, the best Sibelius available....

When it comes to Sibelius symphonies, I will admit that rational thought almost ceases for me. I find them extraordinarily moving and well crafted. As a body of work, I would place them right up there with the very best--Beethoven, Brahms etc. As with any group of works, if one is willing to pick and choose individual performances from among the available alternatives, it might be possible to put together a more satisfying set; but all these performances, along with Colin Davis's two traversals, rank with the very best. A wonderfully bleak and moody Fourth, a light and chilly Sixth, a gloriously romantic First! And in the coda to the Second, Jarvi pours on as much power as one is likely to hear. Even though some of these recordings go back more than fifteen years, the sound remains full and warm with none of the "digital glare" that seemed to afflict recordings in the early days of the CD era. (I have not heard the single issues; the performances may very well have been re-engineered for the set.) BIS is really a class act! The company managed to get all seven symphonies on three discs, and they throw in Jarvi's stunningly barbaric Kulervo on a fourth disc for free.
