5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST OF CHOPIN PIANISTS.......2007-03-01

These are the earlier discs of Rubinstein's Chopin, recorded by HMV in London during the 1930's. It is less complete than his later recordings for RCA - no Sonatas, no Ballades, no Etudes. The sound is naturally of its time - but in many ways more natural than the sharply-lit, slightly edgy piano sound RCA favoured in the 50's and 60's. Nevertheless, these are the Chopin performances I return to most.

Rubinstein's natural affinity with Chopin is legendary. He seemed always able to capture precisely the right degree of rubato at exactly the right moment in these pieces. And he had a unique ability in his countryman's music to balance the lyrical with the impassioned, what seems completely spontaneous with what is clearly deeply considered. The Nocturnes here are, I think, the best you'll hear anywhere on disc. In the greatest of them - the Opp.37 & 48 sets, for example - Rubinstein gets the contrast between the dreamy nocturnal outer sections with the darker, more impassioned central sections just right. These are not salon miniatures in his hands but big works, if not in length then in content. And no-one can match Rubinstein in the elusive diversity of this complete set of Mazurkas. The two Concerti both have Barbirolli as the sympathetic conductor, following Rubinstein's lead in the ebb and flow of phrases and whole sections of these gorgeous and often maligned works. Interestingly the recording of Concerto No.2 (actually the first composed) dates from before the pianist's famous withdrawal from public performance to reconstruct his technique and his approach, that of Concerto No.1 from after. Perhaps one can detect a touch more maturity and refinement in his approach to the latter, but they are both ravishing performances.

Many of the performances on these 5 discs are the greatest Chopin you're likely to hear. And the ear soon adjusts to the somewhat old-fashioned recorded piano sound. This is a highly desirable set for any lover of Chopin and/or great piano playing.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest interpretation.......2007-02-17

The interpretation is stunning. Mono - but no matter for solo piano - and a wee bit hissy but still quite superb.

1 out of 5 stars Not such a great album.......2007-01-12

This album was recorded from records as you can hear the scratches and skips. Don't recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Love it........2006-06-22

This is my favorite album. I think that not even Rubinstein's later recordings attain this quality of musical involvment.

There is a fair amount of background noise, but the music helps to forget it rather quickly overall.

4 out of 5 stars RECORDING QUALITY IS A FACTOR.......2005-02-10

Otherwise, I would have given 5 stars. The fact that these have a hiss (and you can practically hear him close the piano on several numbers) should be mentioned. I guess we are spoiled to audio quality, but this is an expensive collection and this fact was glaringly omitted. That said, I have enjoyed the recordings, in spite of the very audible hiss.

5 out of 5 stars The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04

Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.

3 out of 5 stars Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22

Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

4 out of 5 stars For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Little-known but great late-romantic concerts.......2007-06-11

Both concertos originated in the 1870's, the height of the second half of the romantic age. Lush orchestrations accompany virtuoso playing. The spirit of Russia is (unfortunately?) rather influenced by german standards in arrangements, but both these concertos are still quite an experience to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Recordings.......2007-03-29

Both of the concertos on this disc were once widely played but now are neglected despite their virtuoso powerhouse reputations. Xavier Schwarenka began as a largely self-taught pianist and composed as his concert schedule allowed. His first piano concerto was written during 1873 - 75 and played it for Franz Liszt who accepted the dedication, and also performed the work in 1877. Schwarenka did away with the fast-slow-fast typical movements of the concerto form by incorporating an Adagio into the first movement leaving the second movement as a scherzo-rondo. The powerful first movement begins with a bold introduction with the soloist entering with a brief phrase before restating the orchestral melody. The middle movement demands that the soloist have a quick touch and the dance rhythm of the movement provides a nice contrast to the stormy first movement. The finale returns to the mood of the first movement and is equally demanding on the soloist; the music has long lyrical passages that build in emotion. There is a dramatic cadenza that leads into an ecstatic conclusion.

Anton Rubinstein's Fourth Piano Concerto was widely played and included Paderewski and Rachmaninov among its advocates. It lapsed into obscurity and in recent years was taken up by Shura Cherkassky and Earl Wild. The Fourth (of eight) Concerto was written in 1864 and was revised in 1872. The first movement is expressive beginning with a soaring melody and includes an extended cadenza and the middle movement is a lyrical Andante offering the soloist expansive melodies. The final movement is closely based on a Polish dance with a dazzling (and difficult) part for the soloist with a refined second melody that recalls Mendelssohn and Schumann before retuning to the dance melody and ending the concerto with a flourish.

Marc-Andre Hamelin performs these two difficult concertos beautifully and is well-supported by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Michael Stern. This is a disc that I frequently play and will be of interest to anyone who loves piano concerti.

5 out of 5 stars Hamelin Plays to the Hilt.......2005-11-19

These two concertos, the Rubinstein 4th and the Scharwenka 1st, have been recorded in the past with noteworthy performances by Michael Ponti (Rubinstein, also recorded by Josef Hofmann) and Earl Wild (Scharwenka). Despite the energy in both of those recordings (and still highly recommended!) Hamelin delivers a performance that transcends both Ponti and Wild. With the opening chord of the Scharwenka you realize that Hamelin has full control of and confidence in this rare gem of a romantic piano concerto. His phrasing and technique are impeccable in the cadenza and heroic coda to the third movement. Hamelin also brings the Rubinstein concerto to new heights, another neglected concerto that has been resurrected by Hyperion. Hamelin's recording of the Rubinstein is a welcome re-evaluation of that composers music, music that has seen a recent resurgence. The perilous third movement is played with the greatest of ease and sound by Hamelin. The orchestra is led by Michael Stern (son of Isaac Stern) who conducts with a master hand. The production and sound quality could not be any better. Hamelin, Stern, and Hyperion do so much justice to these fantastic piano concertos. This recording would have to be definitive, both sound wise and performance wise.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD showcasing a GREAT INSTRUMENT.......2002-09-24

My brother bought me this CD when I started studying cello, and it provided an excellent collection of different celistic styles. All of the tracks are tuneful and many showcase virtuosic playing -- the listener gets a real feel for the variety and depth of the cello's sound.

Buy this CD if you love the instrument whose expressive timbre is closest to the human voice -- the cello :-)

5 out of 5 stars The best rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, Period!.......2007-01-02

I've been listening a lot lately to Beethoven's 4th and 5th Piano Concertos, and this 1964 performance of No. 4 by Rubinstein is the best I've heard. You can also see a film clip of his performance on the DVD "Art of the Piano." A truly moving and masterful rendition that Rubinstein plays, I think, at the perfect tempo, which is a little slower than other celebrated performances by his contemporaries, such as Wilhelm Backhaus. Rubinstein's performance of the Emperor Concerto is also beautiful, and to have both for the price of one CD is a steal.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Quality Renditions.......2003-08-03

Beethoven is not as easy as he sounds. Sure, his concertos are not as difficult as Brahms's or Rachmaninoff's, but they do require a great deal of thought and interpretation, especially his fourth (which happens to be his finest in terms of form).

The fourth concerto is a great masterpiece-Rubinstein's favorite of Beethoven's actually. It has very poetic content and is perfect in it's design. (On a personal note, I'm currently working on this piece. I must say that it is very difficult to interpret in some places.) I think Rubinstein does a swell job.

The fifth concerto (the "Emperor") is played with much élan. This piece demands for a wide horizon of style and good technique. It too, can be difficult to interpret.

I think this disc is a fine model for students to follow, or for personal enjoyment. I hope you will disregard Mr. Nelson José de Camargo's review below. The sound is great, the performances are wonderful, and I am not ashamed that I own this recording in the least. I'm down right proud of it.

1 out of 5 stars horrendous Beethoven.......2003-04-20

It's for sure the worst performance of these two great concerts I have ever heard. It applies not only to the performances, but also to the sound, that is quite poor. If you want a really good recording of these concertos, get the Kempff, Arrau or Pollini versions.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven's heart and soul.......2002-04-10

Arthur Rubinstein never wanted to go down in history as a major Beethoven performer; he had been a legend for his Chopin, Brahms and Schumann recordings, and, as for Beethoven, he probably didn't feel like looking for a "new way". Anyway, it's pretty interesting to hear a statement Rubinstein made in the beautiful 1970 movie "Rubinstein: l'amour de la vie": "I could accept the disappearance of a whole island from the face of the earth, but I couldn't live without Beethoven". It's Rubinstein's way to love music: a matter of heart and soul, not the result of so-called "philological studies". So that's Ruby's Beethoven: maybe classical in its approach and style, but with a firing excitement running through the whole performance. Compare this recording of the "Emperor" third movement with the "standard" Backhaus' rendition: if Backhaus seems to seat on every note, not to sound too childish or "naive", Rubinstein just jumps into music and lets it run through the most thrilling finale ever heard. Or listen to the beginning of the Fourth Concerto: tone quality and beautiful use of rubato allow Ruby to SING the introduction without choosing a too easy "Frank-Mills-like" approach.

Rubinstein recorded Concerto n. 4 four times, and I think this is the one to own, if you really can't have them all; his early recording with Beecham is also beautiful, but suffers from the effects of the odd Saint-Saens cadenzas; both n. 4 and n. 5 also appear in their splendor in the two other Ruby's all-Beethoven sets, with Krips (vol. 36) and Barenboim (voll. 78 and 79); in my opinion, anyway, this performances with underrated conductor Eric Leinsdorf and the splendid BSO are by far the best: Rubinstein is at the peak of his artistry, and the orchestra provides for a passionate and powerful playing.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate Beethoven from Rubinstein.......2001-01-29

The recordings on this CD are from Rubinstein's second complete set of the Beethoven Piano Concertos (there is also a seperate Fourth Concerto, with Beecham, recorded in 1947).

These recordings, made in 1963-64, demonstrate Rubinstein was just as "on top" of this music technically as he was in the earlier set with Krips (1956) and much more "into" them musically. In addition, the playing is notably more alert and straightforward than in his later set with Barenboim (1975). To be sure, purists will quibble with Rubinstein's use of rubato, approach to ornamentation, (not to mention his use of Busoni's editions of Beethoven's cadenzas in the Fourth Concerto) but these performances are a joy from the first bar to the last. Leisdorf, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, are to be credited with a fine accompaniment, far more detailed than in the earlier set with Krips.

All three sets of Beethoven Concertos from Rubinstein are worth having, but for those only able to obtain one--this is the one to have. The sound, which was pretty good to begin with, has been superbly remastered.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great collections, with poor quality sound.......2003-01-09

I expected to listen to great professional classical orchestra ...for this classical music collection, but the quality of the music is not too good.

There are a lot of great music collections, but they will sound better when they record it right.

It is good when you just want to have more classical music, but for a CD, the sound quality is like a [poorley made] CD.

I give 3 stars for this product.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Collection Of Romantic Era Music.......2002-09-05

The Top 100 Classical Music series is a must have for novices of classical music, or someone already into the classics but wishes to amassa an "essentials" collection. This particular cd's span the Romantic Era, and although the 19th century saw much more music than what is covered on these recordings, this is nevertheless a brilliant and essential body of works. The Wedding March of Mendelsshon's Midsummer Night's Dream (played in weddings all over the world I'm assuming), Franz Lizst Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (The Looney Tunes Theme Music by the way) and other jewels of the era, such as the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss, the operetta overtures of Franz Von Suppe, Verdi's preludes to such operas as Nabucco and La Traviata, Wagner's intense, dramatic music for his Ring of the Nibelung operas, regarded as the epitome and the zenith of Romantic Era opera, and the music of other composers such as Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Sibelius, Rimsky Korsakov and many others. I highly recommend this cd to anyone wanting to sample and taste what Romantic Era music was all about. Five stars all the way.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat lacking.......2001-03-28

(referring to the entire collection)

The collection is well designed for introducing the listener to a large variety of music, with its broad range of composers and types of music. However, the interpretation of the music is hardly existant, and many of the pieces sound rather dull and uninteresting. Some lively pieces are played too slowly, and nearly all of them without emotion, keeping the set out of reach from being included in a true classical collection. Despite all that, the sheer number and range of pieces (along with the low price) make this a collection well suited for the new classical listener.

4 out of 5 stars Well sung and varied repertoire from a legend........2005-09-21

I first heard London as Wotan in a recording of das Rheindgold under Solti. I remember the voice as if resembling molten lava containing vast amounts of energy yet never too quick to release it. The voice was magnificent! When I read that its owner was passed his prime at the time of recording the role, I got quite excited and looked forward to getting to know this voice at the highpoint of its years portraying ( as is it is nicely put) gods and demons.

I value this CD mostly as a historic document of an artist not too well known, because I am missing the emotional build up and thus my own emotional engagement in the music. This is ofcourse often the case with anthologies such as this.

This being said, as I tread my way through more and more complete productions of operas I can see myself coming back to this recording comparing styles, textual insights and ofcourse the vocal techniques used by the different singers in the arias.

It does not sound as if George Londong did anything half heartedly and I believe his renditions are most definately to be reckoned with.

5 out of 5 stars Terrifying, Thrilling, Gorgeous!.......2003-08-29

George London is my idol as far as singing goes. I'm a bass-baritone, myself and I've always admired him. I particulary love the Mussorgsky and Wagner selections. The 'Clock Scene' was absolutely terrifying and the two Wagner songs were majestic and powerful.
London could take any song and do amazing things simply because of the sheer vocal quality of his voice. Not to mention his great acting ability.

5 out of 5 stars Satanic!.......2003-07-14

This is an excellent collection of a some of London's best roles, plus the recordings are clear and lively. His voice is very focused and totally overwhelming. While his "Le veau d'or" can't compare to that of Christoff, London still makes for a great devil.. and his acting is superb. It's unfortunate that they didn't include London's Scarpia (see the 1960 recording of Tosca with Tebaldi and del Monaco) or one of his villains from the Tales of Hoffmann. This CD is a necessity for all fans of one of the century's finest bass-baritones and actors!

5 out of 5 stars Historical performances!.......2006-11-12

This is a memorable CD. It contains the legendary presence of Joseph Hoffman in front of the New York Philharmonic, under the baton Of Dimitri Mitropoulos and playing Beethoven's Fourth Concerto . You will have the chance to enjoy and admire of the expressive pianism of the most remarkable keyboard giants of the past.

But there is much to listen, Artur Rubinstein playing the Third Piano Concerto in what to my mind concerns was his best decade; the forties.

5 out of 5 stars Rubinstein's Love Affair with Spain.......2006-09-06

Arthur Rubinstein was from the earliest days of his long fabled career a proponent of the music of Spain. Whether in that extraordinary follow-up to the protean display pieces of Liszt, Albeniz's Iberia, or the memorable lyrical passages of the ill-fated Granados, Rubinstein's way with this music stood out in that bygone era of legendary virtuosi. (Of note - Granados tragically was killed trying in vain to rescue his wife following a U-boat attack on their return to Barcelona following the succesful 1916 Met premiere of his opera Goyescas. His success was so great in America he even played at the White House for President Wilson. The CD has one selection from Goyescas, the famous "The Maiden and the Nightingale" in a wonderfully evocative performance by Rubinstein.)
At the same time as the Goyescas' Met premiere the young Artur Rubinstein was traveling across the breadth of the Iberian peninsula, giving over a hundred concerts between 1916 and 1917. Rubinstein became friends with the Albeniz family. (The composer had died in 1909.) He became a huge public favorite and was feted far and wide in Spain, including by the Spanish Royal family. Throughout his life he kept a home in Spain in that extraodinary Costa del Sol cityscape that is Marbella. Rubinstein's appreciation for Spain and Spanish music was unparalled among any other non-Spanish performers of the last century.
This selection was made according to the back cover between 1947 and 1955, but actually, as one reviewer correctly noted, the earliest recording, Navarra from Iberia, was made earlier, in June of 1941. The remainder are from 1947 or later. The performance of the delightful Spanish piano concerto, De Falla's Noches en los Jardins de Espana, captures Rubinstein at the peak of his career - his later stereo performance lacks the froth, sparkle and genuine magic given off in this version. The piano sounds wonderful and has been superbly restored in this issue. The only downside to this CD is that it represents most of the Spanish music Rubinstein recorded.
If you thought Rubinstein simply meant Chopin then this CD will certainly be a revelation. Some of the greatest Spanish piano music played by one of its greatest interpretators. Highest possible recomendation!
P.S. When a customer searches for this title why does Amazon insist on listing an old no longer available CD of this RCA CD and not this much more recent and in stock remastering? This version has a drawing of Rubinstein by Picasso.

5 out of 5 stars Rubinstein Topples de Larrocha.......2001-02-10

Dear Readers, Rubinstein does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with de Larrocha. The fact is that he "LOVED" Spanish music and de Larrocha made her career on it. It's very beautiful what she does, but Rubinstein goes to the heart everytime. You'll get a glimpse of this if you compare the two. They are in very different zones.

5 out of 5 stars Rubinstein "Speaks" Spanish Without an Accent.......2001-01-02

After Alicia De Larrocha, Arthur Rubinstein was the 20th century's greatest exponent of Spanish piano music. On his first tour of Spain, in 1915, the Polish pianist fell in love with the country--its food, wine, women, and music. The love was mutual. Spain took Rubinstein to heart and became friends with some of the composers featured on this CD. Critical reactions to Rubinstein's performances of Spanish music were ecstatic--many musicians remakring that he played Spanish music "without an accent," i.e., like a born Spaniard.

The performances on this CD were recorded from 1941-1955. Every track on this disc demonstrates what the critics in Spain were writing at the time, Rubinstein had a natural feel for this repertoire that defies born nationality. Particularly effective are the Albeniz and Falla selections.

It is a pity that Rubinstein was not persuaded to re-record all of these works in stereo (there are stereo versions of Falla's Fire Dance, Nights in the Gardens of Spain, and Albeniz' Navarra), as there are those closed-minded individuals who will refuse to buy this CD simply because the recordings featured on it are monaural. The loss is theirs.

The sound has been superbly remastered.

5 out of 5 stars A great recording from Marc-Andre Hamelin.......2006-05-20

Marc-Andre Hamelin has generated alot of excitement. His recordings for Hyperion, especially of little-known works by relatively modern composers such as Godowsky, or of concertos by Busoni and Shostakovich, are of such high quality that he was given the "high honor" of being sole classical performer during a recent Grammy Awards telecast (2001). Hamelin's piano technique on this recording is little short of stunning. There are moments that sound as if he had 20 fingers, his attack is that fiendishly fast and powerful. Pianists will respond much like guitarists upon first hearing Segovia or Joe Pass: an urgent desire to cut the strings. Yet Hamelin never subsumes expressiveness in favor of technique. These performances are tasteful and appropriate. Big emotions in the broadly Romantic Rubinstein. More introspection in the lesser-known but excellent Scharwenka. Michael Stern conducts the fine BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra with fire and taste: a perfect foil for the intense technique that Hamelin exhibits. Both concertos are quite good. Hyperion's superb Romantic Piano Concerto series continues from strength to strength, with hardly any loss in quality over the years.

The Hybrid Multichannel SACD sounds spectacular. The sound is immediate, full and warm from all 5.1 channels. The rear channels contain more than the usual ambiance. One feels immersed in music. The horns are especially present. The piano is recorded center front, with the orchestra slightly behind and surrounding it. It is well focused with a wide soundstage. Good sound systems will enjoy being shown off with this SACD. This recording is a gem. Pianists, especially, will treasure it: even as Hamelin's scary technique infuriates them.
