Nicely, darkly styled, but can you dance to it?.......2005-07-09

This is a pleasant and quiet performance on medieval fiddle and drums of mediæval dance material that most people with a taste for early music are going to find very familiar.

Violist Jordi Savall emphasized the virtuosic nature of the melodic lines of the mediæval dances. He is assisted by some very understated and reverb-heavy percussion. The understated tone of the medieval fiddle and the often rather staccato performances make for a quieter and more musical experience than you will get when this material is performed on shawms and sackbuts.

What seems to be missing is the sense that anyone was ever able to dance to this stuff.

Jordi Savall has been a kingpin of early music for about thirty years now, and is a recognized master of the viola da gamba. His medieval fiddling is quite adept, with marvelous control and fiery prowess. I'm sure Savall is acutely aware of his own badass quotient, as most photos show him in a tuxedo with half-unbuttoned shirt, standing with an enormous viol and thronged by adoring sopranos. Unfortunately, he also seems to suffer from severe depression, as every last track on this CD is more or less depressing. Luckily, he's extremely GOOD at depressing music...good enough, in fact, to earn 5 stars. Vielle players of comparable skill include Marco Ambrosini and Thomas Wimmer, both with very different styles and members of Ensemble Unicorn/Oni Wytars/Accentus (but avoid their early work -- the ever-popular but artistically immature "Chominciamento di Gioia").
