Absolutely Glorious!.......2003-01-31

I have listened extensively to more than 15 recordings of Handel's Messiah, and have performed it several times as a tenor soloist, and I must say that this rendition has the combination of technical mastery, musical drama, and historical accuracy that renders it overall the best recording I have heard to date. Davis's solid, but not overly large orchestral forces balance the forte of the choral passages wonderfully, and he also makes use of the organ, which conductors all too frequently overlook - it absolutely makes all the difference, especially in numbers like the Hallelujah Chorus, which is done to perfection and which sold me on this recording in the first place. The soloists are fantastic; I wish the tenor (John Aler) had better command of dynamics and spent less time singing under pitch (I, being a tenor myself, notice these things far too much), but the overall effect of his voice is warm, burnished, and very well modulated. Battle, Quivar, and Ramey deliver superstar performances from superstar singers, and the Toronto Mendelssohn Chorus, while a little quiet for its size, nonetheless delivers the chorales with a precise strength that's refreshing, especially if you've grown up listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir wade around neck-deep in the choruses. Worth every penny you spend.

Excellent music (if you can hear it).......2000-12-20

The CD has some extremely good renditions of The Messiah. I have to admit that the performance was indeed some of the best I have heard. Unfortunately it was recorded poorly. So poorly that my CD player had to be turned up to full to hear it and then I had the static to contend with. As good as an album as it is, it was lost due to to bad recording techniques. Take my advice and spend a few extra bucks on another Handel CD.

Kathleen Battle does not dissapoint on this one. Her crystal clear and purely gracefull voice does handel great justice. Brovo !!!

Messiah Highlights is what I needed.......2001-12-06

This was one of my first CD's. I am replacing it after 10 years of annual heavy use. We play it as we rise many Sunday's during November and December. You can put it on and hear the Christmas story and favorite parts without having to program selections from a 2 disk full Messiah. The Baroque presentation gives you a feel of what it was like to hear it played on the instruments and with the voices Handel had in mind and used in the 1700's.

Another Gardiner success, but not his best.......2000-06-23

This recording of 1978 is an admirable and enjoyable one, but by no means the best Messiah of the hundreds available on the market. For period performances, high in contention should be Christopher Hogwood`s DECCA and L Oiseau-Lyre rendition, created with the Christchurch Choir, Oxford and Academy of Ancient Music in the height of their powers. The choir is electric, the orchestra first-class and the quality of the recording also superb.

Amazingly beautiful.......2005-12-27

This version has the highlights of The Messiah. All the ones you know. Enough that you will have the whole gospel story presented.
In beautiful baroque style with artfully added embellishments but defintly not overdone.
The soloist all pour every ounce of musical perfection to this recording.

I second what the previous reviewer said. Ms Battle brings heart and beauty as I have never heard to "I Know That my Redeemer liveth"

My onlynegative would be that the trumpets are sometimes too brilliant. But for heavens sake they are shouting the Glory of God can't really complain about that.

Excellent singing at a bargain price! .......2005-04-18

I was very pleased with the quality of the singing in this Messiah highlights. All the soloists are excellent, especially Kathleen Battle, in the arias "Rejoice Greatly" and "I Know My Redeemer Lives." Her singing alone is worth the price of this CD! The soloists frequently embellish on the notes in their singing, so if you like that, you'll love their re-endition. If you like it just plain and straight, you may not be used to that.

Both the Toronto Mendelssohn choir and the Toronto Symphony orchestra make for a full-bodied, majestic sound. Andrew Davis does a great job of conducting.

The selections are fairly generous (18 tracks); I wished they would have included the bass aria "Behold I Tell You a Mystery".

I have many versions of Handel's Messiah and I really enjoy this one, especially due to the high quality of musicianship and singing at such a bargain price. The complete version of this Messiah CD will cost you over $30. These highlights are just right. I've bought copies of this CD to friends and they all loved it. Highly recommended!

Budget Messiah a Great Bargain.......2002-01-16

To get soprano Julianne Baird and the excellent bass Kevin Deas--two of the finest young singers on the Early Music Scene now--on a budget Messiah and get all their arias, plus some excellent choral work from this Philadelphia-based baroque group, is a fantastic Christmas gift.
Despite the occasional eccentricity of tempo and phrasing, the Romanian conductor Radu gives a lively performance in a neat space. For Ms. Baird and G.F. Handel, one expects to pay full price. This is a great find. Go for it!

Very good buy........2001-01-26

I should have known better. When my copy of this CD arrived in the mail I immediately tore off the packaging and put it in the CD player...and had to postpone the walk I was about to take because the power of the music made tears come to my eyes. It was totally involving; by the end of the Hallelujah Chorus I was exhausted! I'm not one of the experts who has fifty different copies of the Messiah, but I have heard it both recorded and live every Christmas of my life, and this one is right up there. I confess I didn't expect it to be so good, for the price. The only thing I found that I didn't like was the unusual accelerandos, which tended to appear just when I was ready to lean back into a slow section. Also, there is a very limited number of tracks compared with most Messiah Highlights CDs; but since it's half or a quarter the price, what can you expect? Overall, I think this CD is an excellent buy.

An old recording in a new edition.......2004-11-21

I have this recording on a Silverline DVD 81009-9

My edition is just some highlights from the Oratorio, and I have

only one problem with it. Some of the choruses fade out near the

end, for no reason. Hopefully this new Dual Disc edition corrects

the problem. Also I hope that the soloists get some credit this

time. On the Silverline disc you just get the fact that Don

Jackson and the London Symphony Orchestra perform the highlights.

The idea of a disc with a CD side and and DVD side is interesting

but I think it will only be an audiophile curiousity, not

competition to the SACD, or the DVD-A. It will be interesting to

see if the DVD side of the Dual Disc is just like the Silverline

one.

This is a fine set of Messiah excerpts, with Solti in his usual extroverted, theatrical vein, using a chorus of nearly 100 and a slimmed-down orchestra of 40 (not only large, but in opposite proportions to Handel's wishes, but why quibble?). The stars of the show are the amazingly trained chorus, who can diminuendo on a dime and whose enunciation of the text is a marvel; and soprano Kiri Te Kanawa, turning in what may be one of her loveliest, warmest performances on disc. The original liner notes by Garrison Keillor put Messiah in the author's always entertaining context--his first, stunning, hearing of the music whose text he and his Plymouth Brethren knew quite well, and his occasional terror of encountering nonprofessional performances which include sing-alongs. Solti really does a very fine job conducting, and this recording captures all the brilliance, power, majesty, and spiritual beauty of this masterpiece more than any of the other ones I've heard.

Te Kanawa's beautiful voice enchants, and the orchestra plays with great rhythm. Last but not least, the sound is perfect, all the details are very clear(digital quality). You will feel as if the chorus and trumpets are right in your living room!

Bravo Kiri and Sir George Solti for such an examplary performance! The best classical recording, if not one of the best I have purchased. The orchestration is very good, if only Sir George were alive I'd like to congratulate him for his one of his best efforts. Kiri is at her best in this recording, although I never believed in her, she has made me a believer. The choral section is magnificent!

Highly, highly recommended.
