Fou Ts'ong Plays
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Fou Tsong described by Time magazine as the greatest Chinese musician alive today was born in Shanghai in 1934. He studied in Warsaw, winning the Chopin Competition, and then settled in London in 1960. In recent years, he has performed again in China, and in 1998 played in Beijing and Shanghai, donating his fees to the victims of recent floods. He has performed worldwide on every continent, given master classes, and made numerous acclaimed recordings, including more than a dozen on Meridian. Fou Tsong is famous for his beautifully controlled cantabile playing and his sensitivity to the nuances of the music he loves.

Customer Reviews:
Mozart the romantic?.......1999-12-02
If you like your Mozart played like Chopin, this is a great disc. If, like me, you like fairly strict tempi and a "classical" approach, stay away. Fou Ts'ong loves his rubato, so much so that the rhythmic pulse on which these works depend often breaks down. In the fast movements it's not so bad; his spontaneous, surging approach can produce superb effects. But in the slow movements he's much too stop-and-go for me, and some of the most important pieces on this disc are slow. If you like an individual approach to Mozart, but don't want Chopin, try Lilli Kraus.
Utterly origional Mozart........1999-06-26
Now 65,this pianist from Shanghai is one of the outstanding Mozart stylists of our time.Listening to thoese recordings one is struck by the utter originality of his approach. The playing belongs to no school and borrows from no tradition.Fou Ts'ong studied in Warsaw with the great musicoligist Jan Ekier. The guiding principle was to take each mark on the score as an imperative to performance. If you look at the most heavily marked movements in Mozart, such as the B minor Adagio played here,on the page sudden and almost violent changes of dynamic are called for.Perhaps no one takes them seriously for the danger in doing so is to sound jerkey and unmusical. It takes a musician who has lived this music all his life and who idertifies with the feeling that the markings represent to bring the full spiratuality of this music to life. Here he is.We get a packed CD of some of the greatest music written for the piano. There is a huge and orchestral Fantasy-Sonata in C minor and a driven F major sonata. The balance is late Mozart. What are those chromatic harmonies telling us and why can one best charachterise the A minor rondo as "sadness with a smile"?Nobody knows, but closer to this music you cannot get than this pianist gets.
