Customer Reviews:
Musical Profile of a King's Life? Sure. Why not?.......2006-11-21
That is essentially the 'theme' of the CD. Thus it is not all 'Spanish' music per se but a collection including some old chestnuts from other lands. All that said, it is a superb collection and even the old chestnuts have new life breathed into them given the masterful treatment dished out here. The theme of 'Mille Regretz' appears over and over and we learn, read the notes!, that is is connected personally with Carlos V. Almost a personal theme from a 16th C. soundtrack as it were. A delightful recording.
The life of an emperor in music.......2006-07-23
This is a wonderful pot-pourri of European music from the first half of the sixteenth century - reflecting the pan-European origins of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain. One of the chief delights of the disc is the consort singing of the male voices of La Capella Real. Savall now uses male altos in the vocal pieces by Enzina (and others) in the upper registers, rather than female sopranos (principally that of his wife, Montserrat Figueras) as he did in his 90's recordings with Astree. The results are perfect; altos Carlos Mena and Pascal Bertain make an abiding impression here, with Capella regular Danile Carnovich holding up the bass clef. Figueras takes the cantus in the monophonic 'ballad' pieces, and is still matchless in this kind of music. The winds of La Capella are a joy to hear - listen to the Susato Battaglia, and the Anonymous La Spagna.
In short, this is an echanting survey of the secular and religious music of 16th century Europe, imaginatively presented and beautifuly performed and recorded. A must - and a fine companion to Savall's life of Isablle I of Spain, also from Alia Vox.
Can't go wrong.......2005-08-04
Hesperion XXIs recordings for ALIA VOX are generally even better than the ones they made for EMI, and this one is no exception. Great artistic care has been taken with the arrangements to make this music really accessible to a wide audience. Add to this a first rate realistic recording and you get a divinely beautiful and evocative sound.
The performances are of course faultless. The ensemble playing is extremely precise, the singing is strong and engaging and the individual instrumentalists are all able to creatively express themselves within the mix. Andrew Lawrence King on harp is captivating as always, and Jordi Savall's rich and creamy viol, well, simply the best.
A luxurious and mesmerising production.
¡Vive el musica de Carlos V!.......2003-02-07
I purchased this CD without any information whatsoever after returning from a trip to Spain. I am generally a fan of "early music" (which is basically, according to CD store categorizations, almost everything written before 1600), so I'm used to buying CDs that I know nothing about. Sometimes I'm disappointed, but "Carlos V" is one of the most serendipitous purchases I have ever made. The first track is a haunting, beautiful and forlorn song about life's travails. The string arrangement almost sounds modern and the singing is astounding. It's a song that will stay with you, and you'll want to put it on again and again. The CD also has some festive party music on it that's more upbeat, but the CD and La Capella Reial de Catalunya shine brightest on the slow vocal songs. It's a difficult CD to describe, but if you're at all a fan of classical, early or renaissance music, you're likely to love this CD. My only regret is that I didn't look to see if La Capella Reial de Catalunya was playing anywhere when I was in Spain (Catalonia, to be precise). Maybe next time.
Lastly, there is a follow-up to this CD: "Alfons V El Magnamin" - it's a double CD and pricey, but well worth it.
Masterpiece of Renaissance.......2002-12-19
This is an excelent demonstration of how beautiful and modern is the music of Renaissance. I think it will be a nice surprise for undevoted. I advise this CD for everyone, it's really superb!!!

Amazon.com essential recording
This recording seeks to re-create the occasion of a Mass for the Feast of St. Isidore of Seville as it might have been celebrated in Toledo Cathedral around 1590. Although we know such undertakings involve a lot of guesswork, with performers like Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort, we know the effort is supported by conscientious research and intelligent speculation. We also are reassured by the well-written liner notes. And when we hear the opening instrumental "Cancion," we are happily drawn into the whole concept. This is a beautiful and brilliantly conceived program, featuring works by various 16th-century composers and centered around the outstanding Morales mass. The singing is superb, the instrumental playing unassailable. This is a top choice for every early music library. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
A choice recording..........2000-06-16
The centerpeice of this recording is, obviously, the Milla Regretz mass by Morales. Other composers are represented as well - music by Cabezon, Rogier, Guerrero, and Gombert is recorded. It is all of high quality, but the music by Guerrero and Morales really shines. Guerrero and Morales were both held in the highest regard during their lifetimes and immediately afterwards (Morales, in fact, was more highly regarded than any Spanish composer until Victoria). The music included here shows why. Both Morales and Guerrero are terribly underrepresented in the early music catalog - each has only recieved a handful of recordings. But fortunately this recording focuses on Morales (with several of Guerrero's compositions as well) and both show themselves to be worthy of more attention.
The music (almost all of it at least) is most enjoyable. The canzons are really very beautiful, recorded as they are on cornetts, shawms, sackbutts, and dulcians. These instruments, which we don't get a lot of opporunity to hear, produce a really pleasant sound, especially in combination. A canzon is, from what I understand, a piece which begins with an exposition with the instruments in formal imitation, continues to a development section in which thematic fragments are employed, and then returns to a section of restatement of the original subject. They are fascinating pieces which are dominated by polyphony and the sound of these instruments in interplay with one another is really grand. The organ intonations on the recording are also very colorful and provide a great deal of variety to the service. The chant is well done, for the most part (I'll get to this later) and in the form of scriptural lessons and prayers are most relaxing and again are an important facet to this program. Two motets are included, one by Guerrero and one by Morales, occuring at key moments in the service. Both are very beautiful, marked by flowing polyphony. Finally the Mass itself employs a variety of styles - from smooth imitative polyphony to declamation to very delicate reduced-part sections. I have always enjoyed music in the Spanish tradition which is always most profound - the famous Spanish darkness is here in some quantity, but there is also a great degree of other emotions as well.
Beyond just the quality of the music, it is important to remember the overall unity which McCreesh is going for (and which he succeeds in admirably). The Gabrieli Consort always seeks to present music in its original context and that approach makes for a very powerful listening experience. Recordings of masses without the same treatment are always in danger of focusing solely on the music as an art form, sacrificing attention to the religious nature of the piece (not that all of them do, of course). Presentation of the mass in its context, though, serves to keep that religious context always at the forefront (and the effect achieved is very compelling - even listeners, though, who bring no religious background to the listening can still benefit from the tremendous reflective and contemplative quality of the music). McCreesh seems to have a sense of architecture, almost - he creates a unified whole in which each piece serves a role. Variety is important to color and mood (and I think makes for a better experience), but doesn't mean much if it comes at the expense of artistic integrity. McCreesh infuses the program with a great deal of variety, but as I said also a great deal of unity.
The most immediately noticable thing, to me, about the recording was the wonderful acoustic richness - there is a lot of reverberation in the Brinkburn Priory and I think that it makes for a really nice mood. The quality of the instrumental playing is quite good - it is clean and pure. The singing is good as well (it's not perfect). My complaint about the texture of the sound is that it's rough or coarse (if that makes any sense) - the sound is not nearly as smooth and sweet as Chanticleer, if you're familiar with them; the "roughness" is especially apparent in the chant - it's a little jarring to me. I guess it's not that much of a problem, though (it's dependent on taste). Where the sound does succeed though is in its density and color. This all male group produces a very pleasing dark, thick (which I think can be virtues) sound (which is partly a biproduct of six voice scoring and doubling of the bass part by a dulcian). I very much like the practice of instrumental doubling - it adds an extra dimension to the music. The group sings with excellent pitch, but the balance is not always great (some of the middle parts tend to disappear), but it seems that the focus for McCreesh is on overall texture, so maybe it's partly intentional. The falsettists are fabulous. Interpretive decisions are generally good - McCreesh seems to have a good feel for the music. Some tempi are too fast (the Osannas in the Sanctus sound decidedly un-musical, but other than in that spot the problem is rare) but most are fine.
But despite those minor problems the quality of the music is generally very high. Even more important, though, is unique value of the music and its presentation. McCreesh presents some music which is not recorded elsewhere (Morales' mass is available on a recording by the Hilliard Ensemble, but I haven' heard that recording so I can't compare the two) such as the Guerrero motet and canzons, and he does so in a context which gives this gorgeous music what it deserves.
You really won't be disappointed with this disc. Recommended...
A very worthwhile recording.......2000-01-04
As far as I know, there are two recordings of Morales' Missa Mille Regretz currently in the catalogue: this recording by McCreesh and a 1991 recording by the Hilliard. These two recordings, although interpreting the same mass, serve very different purposes. You may want to own both of them, or only one (well, I'm assuming you want AT LEAST one, otherwise you wouldn't be looking at this page, right?). If you're interested in this mass as an art piece, all you need is the Hilliard. However, if you're interested in the broader context, you must own [also or only] the McCreesh. In what has become his signature practice, McCreesh performs this mass as part of a church liturgy. The music is interpolated with chants and prayers (a nice touch, although, I must confess, after a few minutes these interporations get a bit tedios). The mass movements are supplemented with canzonas, the same way recordings of Venetian vespers frequently are (these canzonas, by Rogier, Guerrero & Cabezon, are performed on cornetts, shawns, recorders, dulcians and an organ). The 6-part mass, sung by a 12-person choirs, is itself accompanied by a dulcian (which, however, appears only intermittently). McCreesh presents only the 1545 (probably, the final) version of the mass. In contrast, the Hilliard sing both the entire 1545 version, and three movements from an earlier version surviving in the 1568 Wittenberg manuscript. I'm glad that the Wittenberg version had gotten the Hilliard's attention because, in my humble opinion, the Wittenberg Sanctus is actually the most beautiful part in the whole mass. Its echoing Osannas are mesmerizing. Unfortunately, the Sanctus on the McCreesh is the least successful part of the recording, with Osannas taken in a choppy, unduly fast manner. However, the intervening solo section between the choppy Osannas is very beautiful. Unlike the Gabrieli Consort, the Hilliard sing the whole mass solo, i.e., one voice per part. Their tempi are generally faster, but uniformly so, without the surprises such as McCreesh' Sanctus. The singers on both recordings are excellent, with one exception. Both recordings share Robert Jones, whose shrill falsetto marrs the otherwise gorgeous top line in both recordings. That is just too bad, because his line gets the most quotations from the famous chanson Milles Regretz. But don't let that dissuade you. In addition to the mass, McCreesh' recording also includes a beautiful motet Emendemus in melius which I'd never heard before. gkolomietz@yahoo.com

Excellent and Beautiful Music, Truly.......2000-07-16
Despite the absolute beauty and sublime texture of most of the tracks, a few of the longer pieces tend to drag on the ears as they progress.
That said, I will reiterate that the majority of songs on this CD are magnificent and merit the purchase of this disc. Of particular interest are Tracks 1 and 8. Victoria (Vittoria) has always been my favorite composer of mysteries, motets and such, and the Sanctus from Missa pro Defunctis is one of the most emotional, deeply spiritual and reflective, almost pensive, peices of his I've heard.
Palestrina, not to be outdone, and in stark contrast to Victoria, provides a joyous, light but no less sacred peices.
Regardless of the few flaws, this is a CD to buy and keep and enjoy.

The sum better than the parts.......2005-10-01
Why you should buy this CD?
Well, morales is one of the great masters of renaissance. But so others, like Victoria, Palestrina ...
Difference is in the players? Sure one of the best. But also others are great (Herreweghe). No, the reason why this is one of the best renaissance cds is the program and the conductor. A carefully calculated mixture of moods and textures. A great ceremony having been reconstructed. Yes, the choir seems full rounded, with great falsettists but with a bit heavy vibrato in other voices. However, instruments are splendid. The reason as I said is the program. here you have polyphony, gregorian chant, lithurgical chant, music for wind band and organ music, presented with such variety and coherence that makes you believe than the whole is greater than the parts. Archiv was right in highliting this CD for its "Archiv blue" selection. As essential as Callas was to opera is Mccreesh to Ancient music. If you are not convinced, try this CD. You will never think the same.
Renaissance polyphony at its most accessible.......2005-08-04
The American musicologist Robert Stevenson once wrote that: "No Spanish composer of the sixteenth century was more lauded during his lifetime and for two hundred years after his death than Morales." Spanish contemporaries such as the music theorist Juan Bermudo (c.1510-c. 1565), and the composer Juan Vasquez (c.1510-c. 1560) proclaimed Christobal Morales (c.1500 - 1553) "la luz de España en la música" ("the light of Spain in music").
Morales wrote in the post-Josquin polyphonic style of composition introduced to Spain in its golden age by Penalosa. Morales was particularly heavily influenced by Josquin, and even his masses based upon plainsong make frequent references to him. As he was active in Rome for so much of his life, Morales was always regarded as a foreigner on his return to Spain, so that nationalistic Spanish musicologists have always tended to try to find tendencies in his music that supposedly epitomize his 'Spanish mysticism' rather than accepting his status as a major European artist of international standing as he deserves.
Morales was popular as a composer for a good two centuries after his death so that throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth century much of his music was played in recreational and domestic contexts in Spain in arragements from Morales's masses for vihuela, harp, or keyboard. Even today his attractiveness as a composer remains evident, so that if there were a single recording of a complete Renaissance polyphonic mass cycle to recommend to newcomers I would immediately choose this recording.
The Mass Mille Regretz is a parody mass based on the chanson Mille Regretz by Josquin and the beautiful chanson theme is quite obvious in every section of the mass cycle. Surely this must be one of the most beautiful melodies ever written in musical history, and the degree of literal repetition of the theme might have outstayed its welcome had it not been so lovely. By the same token, this very feature of the writing makes it extremely wide-ranging in its appeal and many who find Renaissance polyphony daunting to listen to should try this recording. As usual, Paul McCreesh performs things in liturgical context intermixed with a collection of often fascinating instrumental music.
The playing and singing is wonderful throughout and the recording allows the resonance of a church acoustic to come through without excessively compromising detail. In the guise of this new issue at a lower price this recording is a real steal that belongs in every good music collection.

Customer Reviews:
Unfortunately, quite boring.......2007-01-16
I bought this recording, because I really enjoyed another work by Cristobal de Morales, "Officium Defunctorum" (which, by the way, is not available in the US as a new release). "Officium Defunctorum" also served as the starting point for Hilliard Ensemble's excellent 1994 ECM New Series recording "Officium". "Missa Mille Regretz" is also performed by the Hilliard Ensemble, but, in this case, the four voice a capella harmony just drags on and on. After I already purchased "Missa", I read another review to the same effect. A listener interested in Morales's work would be much better off looking for at least a used copy of "Officium Defunctorm". It would be really nice if somebody like Amazon could obtain the rights to re-release "Officium Defunctorum" performed by La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Hesperion XX and directed by Jordi Savall, on the Astree label. Moral of the story: do not buy a recording, even by a composer, whose other work you really liked, without at least listening to snippets of it - those, unfortunately, were not available on Amazon.
Smooth, graceful sacred polyphony from the High Renaissance.......2006-08-27
The Hilliard Ensemble is one of the world's premier vocal consorts performing early music (loosely defined as anything up to, and sometimes including, early Baroque). Here, they perform a Mass by Spanish High Renaissance master Cristobal de Morales (c. 1500 - 1553), "Missa Mille Regretz." Morales achieved worldwide fame during his lifetime, and is widely considered Spain's greatest composer before Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548 - 1611). His "Missa Mille Regretz" gets its name from the Josquin Desprez (c. 1450 - 1521) chanson "Mille Regretz," on which Morales based this composition. Josquin's original chanson, as well as three motets and one Magnificat by Morales, are also performed on this recording.
This recording from 1991 captures the Hilliard Ensemble at what they do best: performing smooth, graceful vocal polyphony that unfolds in a fluid fashion. Morales' flowing contrapuntal style is rich with gentle motion but light on cadences. The Mass movements do not exhibit strong contrast from each other, and a certain sameness sets in after a while. These traits typify composers who worked in the second quarter of the 16th century (the post-Josquin generation). The music lends itself to relaxed listening and promotes feelings of tranquility and peace.
How much you enjoy this CD may depend on your tolerance for male falsettos. I prefer my vocal consorts a little more diverse (i.e. with female voices as well as male) and with some tasteful accompaniment (a little organ or sackbut to create added texture). I appreciate the Hilliard Ensemble's performances in somewhat smaller doses (e.g. selections from their fine compilation of Josquin's "Motets and Chansons").
This disc comes from Spain's Almaviva label, which offers a comprehensive early music catalogue featuring national composers and performers. Other notable CDs in their "Clasica" series include "El delfín de música," featuring works by Luys De Narváez, and a compilation of Baroque music by Andalusian composers in the New World.
Personal tastes aside, "Missa Mille Regretz" is an accomplished, impressive work, and another fine addition to the Hilliard Ensemble's discography.

The Tradition of Antonio de Cabezon (1510-1566).......2004-10-12
Skip Sempe directs Capriccio Stravagante in a performance instrumental adaptations of songs by Antonio de Cabezon (1510-1566) and other composers he was influenced by and those he influenced.
"An important theme of the recording is the encounter of Spanish "Golden Age" musicians, and particularly Cabezon, with the music of foreigners. A large majority of the originals began life as compositions by representatives of the Franco-Flemish school: Nicolas Gombert (c.1495-c.1560), Pierre Sandrin (c.1490-c.1560), Cipriano da Rore (1515-65), Josquin Desprez (c.1440-1521), Thomas Crecquillon (c.1490-1557), and Jacob Arcadelt (c.1505-68). Besides Cabezon himself, the Spanish arrangers include his son, Hernando (1541-1602), Alonso Mudarra (c.1510-c.1580), Luys de Narvaez (fl.1530-50), Diego Ortiz (c.1510-c.1570), and Cristobal de Morales (c.1500-53)."
