Cantatas 5
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The striking thing about the works on volume 5 of the Bach Collegium Japan's Cantatas series is their unusual instrumentation. Cantata No. 18 uses only four violas and continuo; No. 152 calls for only soprano and bass soloists, with recorder, viola d'amore, oboe, and viola da gamba (and without violins or cellos); and No. 155 has a normal complement of strings, but features an alto/tenor duet with, of all things, obbligato bassoon. Cantata No. 161 also uses a normal string group, along with two recorders; it's famous partly because of its title, Komm du süsse Todesstunde ("Come, thou sweet hour of death"), but also because the surprisingly gentle titular aria (for alto and recorders) beautifully manifests the Lutheran view of death as the welcome opportunity to join Christ in heaven. The festive New Year's Day cantata No. 143, Lobe den herrn, meine Seele ("Praise the Lord, O my soul"), the only work on the disc with a substantial part for chorus, adds to the usual strings and continuo three high-pitched hunting horns and timpani; while the choir and orchestra could cut loose a bit more, they perform with good cheer, as well as skill. Yet this volume is really a chance for the soloists to shine--and shine they do. Midori Suzuki's pure boy-like soprano sounds a bit fragile and strained this time around, but she sings with plenty of feeling. Countertenor Yoshikazu Mera and bass Peter Kooy are, as always, eloquent, musical, and pleasing to the ear--as is tenor Makoto Sakurada, whose light, clear tone and sensitive delivery make for a performance worthy to stand beside those of his better-known colleagues. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:
There's really no point in reviewing these cantatas..........2007-03-19
...'cos they're all going to be good (in addition to being the most gorgeously packaged CDs you'll ever see).
This issue has a stunning version of one of the giants, BWV80 "Ein feste Burg". Gardiner has thankfully dispensed with the trumpets and drums shoved in by eldest son Wilhelm Friedmann to tart it up (after the old man died). It doesn't really need them. The rest are marvellous. I'm going to go broke and love it...
GARDINER AND I CONTINUE OUR BACH PILGRIMAGE MOST SPLENDIDLY .......2006-02-24
By the purchase of this fourth installment of Gardiner's Bach pilgrimage, (actually it's numbered Volume 10 of the series) obviously, I'm still, very much, enjoying my Bach journey with Gardiner! Gardiner and his forces are unbelievably good performing these Cantatas masterfully. Everything about this whole enterprise is stupendous-the singing from the Monteverdi Choir, the orchestra (comprising of "original" instruments) play and sing unbelievably well; most of all, Gardiner's leadership reeks of his intellectual and meticulous study of these works. All of the aforesaid attributes translate (for the musical amateur like me) into just simply a beautiful rendering of Bach's glorious cantatas. The works contained in Volume 10 find Johann at his very best! Just listen to the cantata "WO soll ich fliehen hin, BWV 5-it's GORGEOUS!! (The soloists in this volume are superb singing Bach's wonderful melodies and the ornamentations therein wonderfully.
O.k. you (what I call) "Authenticity Police" can "call off" the dogs-I provisionally acquiesce to the use of the countertenor voice. (At least in these recordings!) This is in contrast to my previous held opinion. I am actually enjoying the Countertenors in Gardiner's Bach pilgrimage. I especially enjoyed the Countertenor, in this Volume 10. William Towers sings most beautifully and accurately and most of all his singing is very pleasing to my ear-no hoots are to be heard; there's even a hint of "chest" voice used by him when it is required. More importantly he does sing Bach's beautiful vocal lines splendidly! Once again, tenor James Gilchrist is overwhelmingly good. He has a sweet tenor voice that can turn heroic when required plus his runs are awe inspiring. (Just listen to track 15 of the first disc--fabulous!)Peter Harvey the bass has a rock solid voice well able to do justice to Bach's vocal demands. The soprano (Joanne Lunn) is very good also. (I am on record on this board of preferring the use of the female soprano voice in these works as opposed to the use of the pubescent unchanged little boy's voices trying to negotiate the vocal writing for sopranos in Bach's works.)
Obviously, I'm still thrilled with this Cantata series and intend to purchase additional releases as they become available.
In closing, for a complete magnificent overview of the contents of Volume 10, see the first review herein. I truly admire that reviewer's thoroughness!
Cantatas by BWV # and name.......2005-12-11
This is not really a review but a helpful tool for potential buyers. Listed below are the BWV numbers as well as names of the cantatas contained on this set (since amazon.com only lists by name and not the necessary BWV#).
Gardiner's interpretations bring clarity and distinctness amongst other Cantata recordings. His work is always meticulous.
Cantatas on this set:
Wo soll ich fliehen hin?, BWV 5 (A wonderful cantata by Bach done in the unusual key of Bb - one of 3 in the cantata cycles).
Another cantata in Bb - the Aria with Bass and trumpet is superb - and difficult to play!)
Nun danket alle Gott, BWV 192
Enjoy!!

Wonderful performances on modern instruments.......2006-06-11
The complete cantatas of Bach beyond the most famous ones belong in everyone's collection. I have begun to sample the Rilling cantatas beginning with the first BWV numbers and have been astonihed by how differently they all sound and how perfectly music captures the meaning of the words.
The booklets contain a good amount of information which help one to notice what Bach was doing with the music to enhance the words.
BMV 4 is one of the more frequently recorded and I also have the Koopman and I like this better.
Bide with us ...is the jewel of this CD because it of its cello piccolo movements which continue to haunt me weeks after listening.
I urge people to explore as many of the canatas as you can afford to buy. They are for the most part tiny masterpiees. The only person who might not like this are those who insist on period instruments.
Please excuse typos i have a neurologic disease.

IT'S THE CHRISTMAS SEASON WITH J.S.......2006-03-20
In this 5th installment (Actually Volume 14) of the Gardiner Bach Pilgrimage, it is the Christmas Season to be celebrated with Johann. In this 1-disc installment, we hear cantatas written by J.S. Bach for Christmas time. These Cantatas have always been out-performed by the "Christmas Oratorio".. What's the reason for that, I will never know. The cantatas contained in Volume 14 find dear Johann at his very BEST; they are filled with hope, joy (dare I say) and bounce reflective of the season. All of the aforesaid descriptions are very evident especially in the cantata "Unser Mund sei voll Lachens" BWV 110. As I've noted profusely in my previous reviews, on this board, of the other four installments, I find this enterprise of Gardiner to be outstanding in every way. He along with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque soloist perform Bach's cantatas gloriously. Volume 14 is no exception; it contains some beautiful music. This volume was recorded in New York and all of the participants perform magnificently! The Tenor and Bass have the most solos to perform and they are astounding.
Once again, James Gilchrist, the tenor is astounding-listen to his arias in Tracts 3, 8 and 22-wow! Peter Harvey, the bass is very good also-listen to tracts 10 and 16-they are wonderful! The sopranos, Katharine Fuge and Joanne Lunn singing their duets with the tenor and alto beautifully-those duets are simply fantastic. Just in case you've read my reviews of the other releases in this series, I am still very much enjoying countertenors Robin Tyson and William Towers-they are really very good. In fact, I loved this release!
Although, I listened to this recording about three months after the holidays, it succeeded in putting me in a rather festive mood. If you want to hear some J.S. Bach in his substantial glory, buy this album of his Cantatas. (do read the previous reviewer's magnificent summary of the contents pf Volume14.) By the way, the New York audiance must have been very healthy too; I heard not one sneeze or cough out of them--in the dead of winter too--i wonder what's their secret?
Cantatas on disc by BWV # & name........2006-01-12
This is not a review but merely a helper for potential buyers whom recognize Bach's cantatas by BWV # with the name. This disc (the first issue of a single disc) is the continuation of Gardiner's "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage." The CD is produced with utmost quality in sound, however it is packaged in an awkward cardboard case.
The cantatas on this set by BWV # and Name:
BWV 91, Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ
BWV 121, Christum wir sollen loben schon
BWV 40, Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes
BWV 110, Unser Mund sei voll Lachens
Happy listening!

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-07-22
This is a four disc set that includes cantatas by:Alessandro Scarlatti-Caldara-Handel and Giovanni Bonancini. What a treasure trove of music!!!!The cantata, to some extent, is a development from the madrigal that appeared in Italy at the start of the seventeenth century. While the madrigal was refined and delicate, the cantata evolved because composers felt the need to introduce a dramatic narrative element into vocal chamber music and thusly the music took a lighter, wittier turn.Scarlatti is considered as one if the initiators, and also one of the reformers of this genre, whose outlines he established. In his cantatas for a single solo voice and continuo,Scarlatti treats the latter as a true partner of the voice. Caldara, who was Scarlatti's contemporary, played a large part in the development of the chamber cantata for one to five voices. Bonancini, who was essentially centered on opera, nonetheless wrote innumerable cantatas for one or more soloists. Handel's stay in Italy between the years 1706 and 1710 resulted in a time of intense creative activity, and he quite naturally gravitated towards the cantata. One of my favorites of Handels on this disc is:"Splenda l'alba in oriente", Lesne does a very learned and skillful renditon of this music. The lightness of his countertenor voice suits this genre very well. He has good diction and a nice emotional response to the varying moods of the music. Sandrine Piau (soprano) does a nice job of blending and complementing the countertenor tone quality. All in all it's a most enjoyable and varied listening experience.
Wonderfully Sensitive.......2006-01-20
I want to just say that being a countertenor, it's hard to find a partner who can counter your unique tone quality and timbre. Sandrine Piau is one of the best period sopranos I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. The most pure and beautiful tone you can imagine. She plays off Gerard Lesne as if they are one voice, yet still seperate entities in their roles as musical indivuals in this recording. The selections are nothing short of amazing, and had me hooked from the very first track. Every once of energy has been given to the sensitivity of this unworldly pure music. The Handel pieces are a rare find and a surprise to those who think they know G.F. Handel like the back of their hand. And of course Gerard Lesne is one of the most celebrated countertenors on the stage today. His sound is unique yet still beautiful in that he is keen to preserve the music in its intended context. This recording is an amazing find for those who can't get enough of the countertenor sound, and can't find many recordings of Caldara, and Bonocini.
Dellightful Baroque performances from a masterful contralto.......2004-03-29
One wonders how Virgin Classics manages to produce and market these "Pleasure 4" 4-CD sets for such low prices, but prospective buyers need not worry that they might be getting an inferior product. While an avid lover of Baroque music, before buying this set I had never been aware of contralto Gérard Lesne's name, though I soon noticed that it appears on a number of disks that I already owned--along with the names of great Baroque maestros like Philippe Herreweghe and William Christie and outstanding performers like Fabio Bondi and Véronique Gens. The discography of Lesne and his Il Seminario Musicale is nothing short of astounding in quantity and range, including many disks that have received rave reviews from Amazon reviewers and customers. Lesne is certainly as versatile a countertenor as Andreas Scholl and David Daniels, though he is apparently a little less in the limelight. The cantatas presented here are well arranged so that there is considerable contrast in style and tempo from one piece to the next, assuring that the listener never feels a sense of monotony. Moreover, we have four disks of cantatas each by a different composer, and many of these works will be new to even the average Baroque aficionado. I myself was not even aware of Caldara (c. 1670-1736), ten years younger than Scarlatti, who though "one of the most prolific composers of his generation," gets less than eight minutes on Harmonia Mundi's 15-disk Les Lumieres du Baroque (on the CD called "The Golden Age of the Oratorio"). Bononcini (1670-1747) was an equally prolific writer of vocal music, a pioneer of Italian opera, and an associate--and later rival--of Handel (1685-1759) in London. It is a delight to be able to revel in and compare some of the many delightful cantatas produced more-or-less contemporaneously by these great composers, performed with an alternation of loving gentleness and sprightly vitality by Lesne and ISM with instrumental interludes and accompaniments that can stand with the best of Baroque period performances. Lovers of late 17th and early 18th century music will find these relaxing disks ideal not only for dedicated listening, but also for playing in the background while working, doing household chores, or driving. If you already have some of Lesne's recordings, you will want this set as well, and for those who do not, this set is likely to become the beginning of a Lesne collection you will cherish for years.

In two classic recordings from 1957 and 1967, conductors Geraint Jones and Wolfgang Gonnenwein, two first-rate choirs, and some of the century's top soloists combine to give performances that exemplify the ideal of modern, pre-period-revival Bach. But even period-performance enthusiasts will appreciate these full-blooded, passionate, yet well balanced, elegantly shaped interpretations, which simply remind us that Bach's music can brilliantly shine in different contexts. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Perfect recording of perfect music.......2006-07-07
Makes you wonder why Charles Murray in his book "Human Accomplishment" does not rate Bach higher. I would not recommend listening to anything that brings tears to your eyes while driving! It could cause an accident.
I wept.......2006-01-11
Although I bought this CD for the Cantata 140, the entire CD has been a powerful source of pleasure and joy. The chorale prelude version of Cantata 140 was used as the bridesmaids' music at our wedding, and our best man sang the "Zion hoert" movement--so I already had a sentimental attachment to the music. But I'd heard it off and on for several decades before purchasing this CD. And my initial (as well as current) feeling was that 140 on these discs was almost obscenely too slow. And yet, on at least two occasions, I sat in traffic while tears filled my eyes as I listened to it. It's a magical performance, even if it is too slow.
And the other cantatas (there are two sets of performers on the discs) are nearly as inspired. I especially like the "Ein Feste Burg," one of whose sort of Vivaldi-esque movement is so thrilling that, in spite of my moral objections to such practices (if you've read C. S. Lewis's "Perelandra," you'll know what I'm referring to), I've been known to play over and over and over again.
I have bought this disc for several of my grown children. I recommend it without reserve.
Paying Homage To Bach's Spirituality.......2005-09-27
Tempo is vital to excellent Bach Cantatas, and here Jones directs fine group of vocalists, choirs and orchestra in solid, stable yet passionate account of four cantatas as well as Jesu, Meine Freude.
This is excellent balanced two CD recording, which is sensitive, informed and lively as needed.
Especially attracted to dignififed offering of Cantata 80, with superb vocals by Emeling and Sotin.
Nice price, combination and performance at reasonable price.
beautiful Bach.......2005-08-18
These somewhat older recordings of three of Bach's greatest cantatas deliver superb music making! Cantata 147 features memorably articulate, vibrant and focused singing by a young Joan Sutherland; the performance of the famous chorale, though taken perhaps a tad slow, richly serves the incumbent spirituality of Bach's music. Better the understatement found here than the racing tempi that ruin at least four other major versions I have. Gardner's tempi are acceptable, but the playing is not as focused as it is under these conductors. The orchestras here are pliant and attentive, partnering splendid singing with a devoted sense of intimacy. Altmeyer, Baker & Ameling are especially fine soloists in the other two cantatas. I've heard many performances of Bach's cantatas and consider these among the very best recorded versions. With so many recordings of the cantatas available, one would think there should be many musically fine editions from which to choose and be content, but memorable performances are rare enough indeed. Music making of this kind quashes an already notoriously thin controversy with respect to period instruments and style. This is music verily from the inside out, nothing less. It's a delight to experience from beginning to end. A separate chorale version of 'Jesu, meine Freude' (with slightly altered melodic cadence) is an unexpected additional treat. Don't hesitate, for Bach's sake!
Excellent Stuff.......2005-02-06
I am a relative newcomer to Bach's cantatas, so this review might not carry much gravitas but anyone's free to contradict me. I thought this was an excellent recording of some of Bach's most loved and well known cantatas, and this double-disc offers excellent value for money. Cantata 147 was superb, and thankfully was not sung in English as I have heard before but in German obviously as it should be -I go crazy hearing "Jesu Joy of Man's Desire" in english the German sounds so much better and this version is a case in point, with a really vibrant orchestral accompaniment instead of a laboured organ which I have heard before. This chorus is so good, Bach included it twice in BWV 147 and it really is a joy.
The second cantata on the first disc is BWV 227, the motet "Jesu meine Freude". I knew nothing of this beforehand and was delighted to find out that it contains all choruses and corales with no recititatives which I find to be a bit boring (queue sound of purists turning in their graves). The choir here is uniformly excellent
The second disc begins with BWV 140 "Wachet Auf, ruft uns die Stimme". I have a particular love and interest for this cantata having sung it recently and this is how it's meant to be sung- the South German Madrigal Choir's execution is far better than our unbalanced amatuer one! The tricky "Wachet Auf" chorus is handled effortlessly and perfectly with the "alleluia" bit toward the end absolutley superb. The two soprano/bass duets are also brillaint but the undoubted highlight of this cantata comes with the final corale "Gloria sie dir gesungen". This contains such joy and sheer beauty it must be heard to be believed. Translated, one of the lines reads "With men's and angel's tongues" and this sounds like choirs of angels. The finale with the sopranos hitting strong soaring high notes is hairs on the back of the neck stuff.
I know nothing about BWV 80 but to this amatuer it sounded excellent with the opening chorus a joy, punctuated with triumphant french horn throughout. The cantata is routinely excellent throughout.
I would definitely reccomend this cd to classical lovers in general and to Bach lovers in particular

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-07-21
WONDERFUL LISTENING EXPERIENCE!!!
As much as I reveled in the hearing of these motets, ir behooves me to mention a few things about them.
Firstly, the two motets BWV 230 and BWV 225 has many technical demands, and one has the impressions that the sound engineer was not quite up to the complexities of it; thus making the choir sound effortful and contrived. For example, running notes are chopped up to further avoid muddling of the choral sound due to the inevitable echoes that arise in the church.. One wishes that the laudable efforts to create an authentic cathedral sound were matched by an equally competant sound engineer. However, having said all of this, the Monteverdi Choir remained truly marvelous to hear, and there are many remarkable moments in Gardiner's interpretation of these motets. One can feel the greatness of Gardiner-masterful shading and line treatment of choral forces that make this choir well above average and capable of some very extraordinary singing, as in BWV 228, when the sound engineer seems to be finally in sync with the choir. Of course, the English Baroque Soloists does an efficient job of supporting the choir, thus helping to even out the bad acoustics.
As to performance of the vocal soloists in BWV 227, one can only say that they are excellent, if not adequate: I really liked the 2 sopranos (Eliz. Priday and Gillian Fisher) and mildly objected to using Ashley Stafford as countertenor instead of Michael Chance who had just begun (1980) his several years with the Choir. That is strictly a personal preference on my part; I just find Stafford's voice not formidable for a solo part.
All in all the recording of these motets is awe-inspiring!!!!
Eat your heart out, Marilyn Manson.......2006-04-16
This was the first CD I ever bought, back when CD players were still cutting-edge technology. Now, more than a decade later, I still listen to it regularly.
In fact, this CD ranks as my all-time favorite for playing at ear-bud volume while rocketing down the highway. My apologies to the Seattle police -- and to the millions of kids who will never know that Bach's Motets kick industrial metal's ass (and just about everything else) when it comes to pure emotional transcendence.
A masterpiece of choral artistry.......2003-05-15
Not only is the composer Johann Sebastian Bach, but John Eliot Gardiner has interpreted him in very fine fashion.
Among the works featured in this album are ensemble pieces of four-part harmony, but there are polyphonic sequences, and sequences featuring solo singers.
This is a double disk album, making it especially valuable.
The choir has excellent diction, all in German. There is a strong, clear soprano section enabling a flexible, versatile dynamic range. The basses and tenors are similarly skilled.
Incidental music is unobtrusive and enhances the choral presentation.
The overall effect is awe-inspiring and elevating.
centerpiece for choir lovers.......2000-03-29
If you love J.S. Bach, if you love choir music, this double CD is an essential purchase. Get a taste, try "Komm, Jesu, Komm". It's built in several parts; each takes you to a higher level, and after the sequence ("du bist der rechte Weg...") which gets me high each time I hear it, the motet ends with a lovely aria. But then, there's so much more to discover here! Gardiner and the Monteverdi choir are the reference level. However, be aware that this CD could suddenly dissappear from the market (in Germany, it has). Don't hesitate: this is a must for all lovers of the b-minor Mass and St. Matthew's Passion where choir music also plays a prominent role.

A MUST BUY!!!.......2001-03-03
If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!
Great music, Excellent Value!.......2000-07-26
Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.
This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23
What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

Suzuki & Mera from Japan: perfection and purity.......1998-11-29
Again, from Montana I am writing to you to extoll the virtures of this excellent CD. The counter-tenor, Yoshikazu Mera, is one of the artists on this CD adding his incredible, almost surreal, voice to this fascinating collegium. When I am in need of a spiritual soul boost I put on a CD like this one with the voice of Mera. I recommend the CDs "Romance" and "Nightingale" as being two of the truly most exceptional classical CDs I have ever heard. The famous Bach cantatas have never sounded as good as they do on this CD.

Cantatas on Set. Vol. 8 is Great........2005-12-20
At last, Koopman's re-release of the 3-Disc Set Complete Cantatas Vol. 8 is available on Amazon.com. But, where is the description of what's on it? I will provide that below.
Firstly, I must include this series of re-releases on Koopman's own label, Antoine Marchand (though more costly than when on Erato in the 90s), contains the very well interpreted music of Bach as well as valuable scholarly research of Bach's Cantatas by Professor Christoph Wolff, a leading Bach scholar. Stephen Keavy leads the trumpet section performing the tasking parts in BWV 77 and 90 on this set.
Cantatas on set:
BWV 77 Du sollst Gott, deinen Herren Lieben
BWV 81 Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen?
BWV 83 Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde
BWV 89 Was soll ich aus dir machen, Ephraim
BWV 90 Es reisset euch ein schrecklich Ende, ihr sündlichen verächter, hin
BWV 109 Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben!
BWV 167 Ihr Menschen, rühmet Gottes Liebe
Enjoy the Musik!
