I was reluctant to buy this recording because the title and the underlying concept seemed commercial, superficial, and hokey. But these are genuinely fine performances of great works. Whoever put this together did it right. I recommend it without reservation.

I bought this CD based on the three previous reviews and the fact that I like beautiful choral music. But I found Tears from Heaven dreadfully dull and uninspiring. There were perhaps three tracks that I enjoyed listening to. So here you have another opinion.

If This is What Heaven Sounds Like ..........2000-04-14

then I can't wait to get there ! Out of my extensive music collection this is the album that gets played on a daily basis. It is not often one can say that every track is pure pleasure to listen to; but it is the case with Tears from Heaven (and the second CD in the album - Voices from Heaven). This album has to be heard to be believed. For variety, musicality and recording clarity this is is truely a divine collection. I highly recommend it !

Building on the enormous success of the first Agnus Dei disc, its successor offers more of the same musical mood, but with a few surprises too. One of the hits of the first album was John Cameron's arrangement of Elgar's Nimrod, using the words of the Lux Aeterna. Here he really rolls his sleeves up and similarly tackles the Albinoni-Giazzoto Adagio (using the words of the Beatitudes) and the Intermezzo from Bizet's second L'Arlésienne Suite (using the text of the Agnus Dei). The role of the orchestra (the excellent ensemble Capricorn) has been expanded, and Edward Higginbottom himself has arranged a delicious string septet accompaniment to Brahms's Geistliches Lied. Much of the music is of the kind that the choir obviously eats for breakfast--which is not to say that they ever sound bland or tired, just at home. The one weak track is Monteverdi's Beatus Vir, which needs voices of more sophistication and agility than the boys can provide. That aside, this is another album that should do their reputation no harm. --Warwick Thompson

After owning Agnus Dei I for years, and somehow misplacing the CD, I decided to buy both I and II from Amazon. Of the CD's, I is still my favorite. Agnus Dei II is a decent CD, but it doesn't have the fluidity or the dynamics that the first disk has. I guess I got spoiled with the first disk.

Agnus Dei II is a really good choral CD with a more otherworldly sound than most choral offerings. But the first Agnus Dei is better, amazing really. Own both, but if you only want one, get the first one.

I bought this CD because it said Eamon as an artist. WTH? I can't find Eamon anywhere on this CD. It says Eamon on the other one, but I'm not even going to try. Never again will a buy a CD associated with Agnus Dei.

LAST WORD: Don't buy this if your buying it for Eamon music.

Albonini's Adagio (Beatitudes) is an Italianate emotion feas.......1999-06-11

I happened upon this album while looking for some choral works for a church choir. Not schooled in the literature, I had never heard of Tomaso Albinoni. His Adagio ("Beatitudes") is a choral emotion feast in Italian style, the likes of which I have never heard before. Unless...did the Coppollas (pere et fils) use it in the soundtrack to Godfather 3? I'm not sure. Great piece. The rest of the album is okay. Standard fare.

Awesome music - fidelity a bit lacking.......1999-02-16

The opening song "The Beatitudes" by Albinoni is incredibly moving, so much so that the other songs have a hard time comparing. Overall, excellent, although the fidelity could be greatly improved. I had to crank up my volume 30-40% higher to achieve a comparable volume and noticed some distortion (in the recording, not my system) that was a bit distracting. Still, an outstanding CD.

The Holy Grail of Choral Recordings.......2006-07-03

This was the first choral CD I've ever purchased when I started becomming involved with choir during my senior year of high school five years ago. My director was telling the choir that he had finally found his copy at a music store and referred to it as the "Holy Grail" of choral recordings. So, I went out to find my own copy and I'm still blown away by it today. I've even given copies as gifts. The music is certainly relaxing and such, but what I most value from it is the spiritual magic. The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge (then and now my favorite choir in the world) brings every composition to life in such a way that's pure, elegant, and deep. Listening to this music and enjoying this choir has allowed me to set my own standard of singing and compositional excellence.

One Small Correction.......2004-03-06

I keep finding new things to love on this CD, including the fact that it has the first recording I found of Gabriel Faure's beautiful Soprano (or Soprano/Alto) duet Ave Maria., Opus 93. The same recording appears on another CD where the singers are named. The above description of this selection unaccountably adds a baritone. Incidentally, Faure also composed a shorter SATB Ave Maria, which John Rutter has recorded.

I only wish the recording included the complete text of Psalm 50/51 from Gregorio Allegri's Miserere Mei Deus. This might come from John Rutter's recently edited score, published by Oxford Press, if I'm not mistaken. I, for one, do not find this selection (or indeed the entire recording) too long and I believe that the embellishments at the end (mentioned in another review) are probably correct when considering performance conventions of the time of its composition.

Gorgeous music, gorgeous performances.......2003-06-19

I am a semi-professional singer with a BA in Music, and I bought this CD with some trepidation because it looked like one of those dreadful "pop classical" compilations that are everywhere lately. But it had lots of great repertoire all in on place, so I decided to risk it, and I was not disappointed! In fact, this is now one of my favorite choral CDs.

As usual, the Choir of Trinity College delivers stunning performances, and the music itself is just gorgeous. Lots of "church" favorites from a wide range of musical periods. The mood of the CD is definitely on the mellow side, but it's perfect for those quiet moods. I love this CD -- highly recommended!

Even as an avid fan of classical music with very picky tastes, there was just so much good music packed on these two (cheap!) discs for me to take in at once!
The perfectly balanced and locked chords can really give you chills.

Make it your manifest destiny to own this compilation of music. These scores are given to us by the world's most gifted composers. Performing are "heavenly" choirs and instrumentalists demonstrating true virtuosity. Large choirs perform with such intonation qualities! There appears to be just one voice in each section. Your heart will pound when you are lifted so high you realize that you have stopped breathing; likewise, with the sudden timbre of the minor you allow yourself to remember tears. The emotional roller-coaster ride will affect your inner being. It is appropriately subtitled: Classical Music for Reflection and Meditation. It is a true gift to hear the genius of Byrd, Bach, Mozart, Faure, and others, performed so well.

GLORIUS! GLORIUS! GLORIUS! That's the best way I can describe this marvelous rendition by the Tallis Scolars of Byrd's three Masses.
William Byrd(1543-1623) was a Catholic in the Protestant England of Queen Elizabeth, and had to be careful to keep his head, in every sense of the phrase. By writing for the Protestant Church a Great Service and a Short Service, and for the Papists three Masses(on this disc),besides madrigals, anthems, and hymns, he remained in the good graces of both factions. In his position as Master of Musicke, he was called upon for music for every sort of occasion, and rose nobly to the challenge, inventing new types of composition as need arose. He composed a number of songs with string quartet accompaniments, actually the first vocal solos in which instruments played a the part purely of accompaniment.
Byrd published his three Mass-settings between c.1593 and c.1595 separately, in very small books. They have an unmistakable austerity of tone, and in this lies the peculiar power of these pieces. It is like a theme, to which each movement of each of these 3 Masses is a variation; but the theme is a MOOD, not a MELODY. During the course of these pieces Byrd clearly explored every feeling a man may have when he is fighting for something he passionately believes in, with his back to the wall. His 5-part Mass is one of the most convincingly argued, as well as sonorous, achievements in all his music.
There is no doubt in my mind that this Tallis Scholars recording is the greatest of all the recordings of these Masses. Peter Phillips has assembled his most accomplished singers for this disc (made in 1985). Singers such as:Sally Dunkely & Alison Gough (sopranos)-Michael Chance & Robert Harre-Jones (countertenors)-Charles Daniels, Mark Padmore,Rufus Miller & Nicolas Robertson (tenors)-Francis Steele and Jeremy White (basses). Their sound is sonorous;their emotional investment high and correct; their balance perfection and the diction is flawless! I have 2 other recordings of these Masses, and they just don't get to this SUPERIOR level.

William Byrd was a composer of grace and power. A staunch Catholic in an increasingly Protestant country, Byrd maintained his church loyalties at high cost. However, as a recognised genius at liturgical music, he had powerful admirers and friends, perhaps including Queen Elizabeth herself. Producing musical settings to Latin texts in a new-regime English-dominated church environment took courage. However, Byrd persevered all his life to produce music that remains timeless while being firmly rooted in its time.

--Mass for Five Voices, Four Voices, Three Voices--
Each mass consists of five primary pieces: the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Benedictus, and the Agnus Dei. The five-voice mass is probably the latest composition of the three masses presented here. It requires two tenor parts, and has an elongated Credo ending vis-à-vis the other masses. Like other Byrd compositions, in Phillips words, 'remains true to the English preference for counterpoint.' Counterpoint is a particular kind of polyphony that has a different emphasis, but a way to think about it is of having a melody against a melody in the same piece. The four-voice mass was likely the first composition, and remains the most popular. The three-voice mass presented some difficulties of composition, according to Phillips, to present counterpoint for so few voices. Nonetheless, it remains an exquisite piece of liturgical music. The Mass for Five Voices, however, is probably one of Byrd's greatest works, and thus has pride of place in this collection.

--Ave Verum Corpus--
As an added bonus, the Tallis Scholars have provided the 4-minute motet Ave Verum Corpus, also by Byrd. A motet is typically a choral composition sung at services other than masses (often at Vespers, although sometimes as anthem music). Byrd, together with Tallis (from whom this ensemble derives its name), was considered a master of the Flemish style of motet.

Being internationally acclaimed, the Tallis Scholars' CDs typically present their commentary and texts in English, French, German and Italian (together with any Latin texts); that is true of this disc. The cover art also typically represents visual arts contemporary with the compositions - here it is a piece by Rubens, who was a contemporary of William Byrd.

--The Tallis Scholars--
The Tallis Scholars, a favourite group of mine since the first time I heard them decades ago, are a group dedicated to the performance and preservation of the best of this type of music. A choral group of exceptional ability, I have been privileged to see them many times in public, and at almost every performance, their singing seems almost like a spiritual epiphany for me, one that defies explanation in words. Directed by Peter Phillips, the group consists of a small number of male and female singers who have trained themselves well to their task.

These eight CDs present music by William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes, Henry Purcell, John Blow, Matthew Locke, the little-known Pelham Humfrey, John Sheppard, and John Taverner--all recorded in Dorchester Abbey, Oxford, England, and sung by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford's great all-male choir. Their heritage goes back to Taverner himself. Their sound is both pure and lush, their singing immaculate. A glorious sharing.......2003-12-14

Although listed as being by "various artists", these two discs were recorded in 1996 and 1997, respectively, by the monks and choirboys of Downside Abbey and School (near Bath, in England).

The discs represents a sharing with the rest of the world of the music which brings together the two communities, of monks and schoolboys, at masses in the Abbey.

The quality of the recording on disc 1 is superior to that on the later disc, but both convey the beauty and simplicity of the religious music and plainsong which lie at the heart of Benedictine communities. You do not have to be religious, yourself, to enjoy the sense of peace and serenity conveyed by the pieces. Relax and let the sound wash over you.

Byrd's three Latin masses are among the finest choral works ever written, and this performance of the five-part mass by Winchester Cathedral Choir is among the best on disc. With its pleasingly bright and unified treble sound and clear, well-balanced inner voices, the textural beauty of Byrd's work comes through perfectly. The mass movements are interspersed with propers for the Feast of Corpus Christi, and the disc concludes with other Byrd compositions, including the exquisite motet Ave verum corpus. --David Vernier

Wow - this is stunningly calming.........2005-01-30

I'm certainly no expert in this field of music. I came across it as it was used on an audio CD I have as music between chapters (Gunpowder Treason & Plot - find it on Amazon.co.uk) and managed to set the scene perfectly. Its also a Hyperion disc which means the sound is simply stunning. It stands out from budget classicla CD's a mile - it really is worth the exctra money. Put this music on as you go to sleep and as you wake up and you I guarantee you will have a good day!

This disc concentrates on images of Christ in a capella music over the centuries. According to Rutter, 'Around the figure of Christ there has grown up over the centuries a body of choral literature that can only be described as among the most remarkable in western civilisation.'

--Music--
Selections on this disc come from all over the Western world. They range from as early as eleventh-century France to twentieth-century Russia, a millennium in song and composition. Rutter has selected five major themes - the Coming of Christ (Advent and Christmas), the Words of Christ (lesson texts and prayers, such as the Lord's Prayer, by Stravinsky), the Passion of Christ (Holy Week and Good Friday), the Resurrection and Ascension (Easter), and Christ in the Eucharist (worship and ongoing presence).

Here is a mixture of sacred compositions ranging from standard Gregorian chant and Sarum chant to medieval compositions from Palestrina, de Victoria and Byrd, up to more modern composers such as Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Bruckner, Barber, and Messiaen. This being said, Rutter states, 'The aim [of this disc] is not a liturgical reconstruction, nor an historical survey, but rather a journey of the imagination.'

--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn, both in original language and English translation text. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers. Happily, this disc does have a list of the singers.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

A fantastic recording.......2000-06-06

This collection of music from the last thousand years is masterful from start to finish. From well-known mainstays of choral repertoire such as Lotti's "Crucifixus" and Casals' "O Vos Omnes" to the more seldom heard pieces, such as Rachmaninov's setting of the Beatitudes, the listener is treated to musically sympathetic and disciplined performances. Even if, like me, you're not of a religious persuasion, you'll love every minute of it.

There are so many highlights to this album it becomes cruel to say any piece was not among them. The Barber Adagio/Agnus Dei is a masterwork, and the Cambridge Singers' discipline and pathos make the arrangement come alive in ways the strings simply can't.. The Lotti "Crucifixus" (an enduring classic), Casals "O Vos Omnes" (a beautiful and moving work, conveying the suffering of the Passion without garishness) and Byrd's enchanting "Viri Gallilei" are fantastic and provide more than enough reason to buy the album. The Messaien "O Sacrum Convivium," with its subtly sensuous harmonies and the Bairstow "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" with its haunting melody and varied textures will silence any who say that church music has become a lost art in the 20th Century. Palestrina's phrases soar as though on the wings of angels (particularly in "Hodie Christus Natus Est.") And Bruckner, as always in his good moments, is as sexy as the Church would let him be.

While the inclusion of some Stanford or Tallis would have been fantastic, this album stands as one that should be in the library of anyone who loves choral music, along with "Hail Gladdening Light" and "Faire is the Heaven."

In short, BUY THIS ALBUM. You'll love it.

Exquisite!.......1999-03-08

The selections are gorgeously sung and spiritually moving beyond anything I can think of, right up there with Verdi's Requiem. My teen, who thinks rock music is the only music, was so moved by Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei, that she asked for her own copy of the CD. If you are already a believer, this music will remind you why you are. If not, it might just take you there.

Another sterling Cambridge Singers disc.......1998-09-10

This is a marvelous collection of choral music, notably Lotti's Crucifixus (in eight parts), and a stunning rendition of Barber's Agnus Dei (his choral arrangement of the Adagio for Strings, which was itself his arrangement for string orchestra of the Adagio from his String Quartet). Highly recommended!
