Album Description

A beautiful collection of great Jewish Music. Classics by Ernest Bloch and Max Bruch, mixed with rarely heard gems by Maurice Ravel, Zavel Zilberts, Jacob Wasilkovsky, and David Meyerowitz. "Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt", a Yiddish Theatre gem, is alone worth the price of admission for its mixture of pathos and humor. The songs by Zilberts are an important and beautiful part of the Jewish music legacy that must be heard.

"Beautiful"? I did not find anything about this music "beautiful". Most of it is very dark and depressing. A few of the songs sound like something you would hear in a horror movie. Now I know why they do not provide samples to listen to. The only two songs I found pleasant to listen to were "Zilberts: Reb Dovid'l" and "Meyerowitz: Gelt (Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt)". I am very disappointed. Admittedly, I purchased this CD without really knowing what to expect. I just trusted the previous reviews. Try to find samples to listen to before you purchase this CD to see if you like this kind of music.

I love this CD and have bought several for friends. Music is so very beautiful. Toda raba!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Encore! Encore!.......2004-01-13

Perhaps no other instrument captures the sad-sweet contemplative mood of classical Jewish music like a cello. Is this because so many Jewish composers have written for the cello, that we think of it as a "Jewish" instrument? Or did they choose the cello because it sings so beautifully of the Jewish soul? Like the chicken and the egg, this question may never be answered -- but it doesn't really matter. This superb music is an important part of our Jewish legacy in its own right.

On this CD, cellist Richard Locker, accompanied by Susan Walters on piano, brings together 12 classical Jewish pieces, some well-known and others not so, in an absolutely magnificent performance -- so beautiful, that it literally brought tears to my eyes. The CD starts out with a niggun (Hasidic tune) by Ernest Bloch, then moves into to the dark, somber strains of Max Bruch's "Kol Nidre." From there it rises in mood, to end with a playful Yiddish theater piece, "Wie schecht is ohne Gelt" (How awful it is to be without money!) Included is the rarely heard "Meditation Hebraique" by Bloch, which he dedicated to Pable Casals, and a trio of pieces by the lesser-known composer, Zavel Zilberts (1881-1949), who directed the Choral Society of New York and played with the Metropolitan Opera. All of this is performed on a cello made by Nicolo Gagliano, dated 1780. To hear such a fine old instrument played by a talented, sensitive musician is truly a mechayah! (pleasure)

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2003-12-05

I recently received this CD as a gift and was simply overwhelmed by how beautiful it is. The music, the playing, and the recording are all stunning. The interpretations of the well known works are magnificent and the pieces by Zilberts and Meyerowitz are a revelation. I cannot recommend this recording highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection.......2002-11-17

Jewish Cello Masterpieces is magnificent! This is a soulful performance by a true cello master. I look forward to more work from Richard Locker!

Another legendary George Szell recording, this time partnering him with Pierre Fournier, the magnificent French cellist. At the very beginning of his career, Szell recorded this concerto in Prague with the Czech Philharmonic and none other than Pablo Casals. That recording, made around 1938, is still available. This stereo remake with the Berlin Philharmonic shows both artists at the very peak of their form. The the couplings, too, are uniquely appealing. That this compelling performance is available on DG's budget line underscores one of the great peculiarities of the classical music business. In case you haven't noticed, there is no relationship at all between quality of performance and price. So what are you waiting for? --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars best Dvorak.......2005-10-09

I have heard perhaps 5 or 6 versions of the Dvorak cello concerto. Of the ones I have heard this is the best (close competition from Du Pre only). The other pieces are okay but the Dvorak is the reason you would purchase this. The recording quality is especially good with the solo cello while the orchestra occasionally is not as clear. Recommended. I would have given it 5 stars if I liked the other two pieces nearly as well.

5 out of 5 stars The best music ever written!.......2004-12-12

Well, that's a large claim to make, but I'm going to be 60 in a few months and so I will state my frank opinion: the Dvorak Cello Concerto is the best piece of music ever written by mankind, and you should really listen to THIS version, with Pierre Fournier on the cello, and George Szell conducting the Berlin Philharmonic.

This could hardly be called "program music." Yet it seems to address any questions which you bring to it -- questions about love, mortality, and the gods, among many others. And there are many, many moments when Dvorak is simply "out there" -- communicating with the stars.

My runner-up is the Brahms Violin Concerto! :-)

5 out of 5 stars Very personal account!.......2004-10-14

The level of concentration throughout in this set of recordings is amazing...even though some may not know it, the Lamoreux orchestra is one of the very finest and it is the oldest orchestra in Paris. All of the recordings are top notch and are played with polish.

As a backgrounder, you may want to investigate the 1936 Casals/Szell coupling of the Dvorak on EMI! Wonderful in different ways!

5 out of 5 stars Dramatic and Passionate.......2004-06-20

Beijingfox2 and California music fan have just about covered the bases regarding this outstanding recording, but I wanted to add a few words from a different perspective. Listen to this CD without being involved in another activity. Turn down the lights. Allow yourself to be totally immersed in the music. All three pieces, but especially "Schelomo" are emotionally powerful, and will sweep you away.

5 out of 5 stars beijingfox.......2003-12-06

There are countless versions in the catalogue of this concerto (probably the most difficult solo cello part to play completely convincingly in the current popular repertoire - it's HARD!) and many play "very well"....Lyn Harrell, Paul Tortelier, Mistislav Rostropovich, Heinrich Schiff, but the overall picture and feel which MUST be portrayed beyond the notes is normally missing to a degree in these and certainly in almost all others (including Yo yo Ma, Jaqueline Du Pre and many many others eauuuch). The technical playing of Fournier is without question particularly authoritative and impressive (all cellists agree!) - the right hand/bowing phrasing is special in a way which is just unforgettable and rich in tone....and the left hand contact and articulation with the strings never less than brilliant and inspired - but beyond that, the romantic sweep, ultimate control and passionate throb of the playing on ALL 4 strings - even high on the fingerboard with the A string (and D) - is unmatched even after 40 years! If you really want to hear one of THE definitive concerto recordings of the gramophone catologue (up there with Josef Hoffman's Chopin concerto recordings) then this is it. You don't necessarily need to be a cellist to appreciate the sheer gifted and beautifully thought-out musical tapestry beyond the bounds of mere cello-playing which is represented in this deeply passionate, and unforgettable performance . It will be up there on your SPECIAL list. Play it LOUD!!!! Beijingfox@hotmail.com

4 out of 5 stars Stephen Albert's Concerto for Cello is a masterpiece.......2001-12-10

I have been a fan of Stephen Albert's music ever since I heard his Riverun Symphony. The cello concerto, in this modest writer's opinion, is one of the best late works for cello of the 1990's, or for that matter 20th century. Yo-Yo Ma plays with a soulful intensity that is matched in time by David Zinman and the Baltimore Symphony. A note to all cellists: please learn Albert's concerto, it deserves to be performed again and again. When I bought this disk, I knew the combination of Ma and Zinman would not disappoint me and I am right. This disk should be a memorial for Albert who died in a very tragic car accident on Cape Cod in 1992. It is a true tragedy in every sense of the word. Stephen Albert was an up and coming composer at the time of his death. The nation lost a potentially great artist. The other works on the disk, the Bartok Concerto for Viola transcribed for cello and Ernest Bloch's Sholomo are showcases for the cello that show off Ma's incredible skill. As for the sound of the disk, it does sound at times cramped but Ma's playing and the leadership of Zinman makes up for the discrepancy; marvelous performances all around.

4 out of 5 stars Good Recording.......2001-09-02

I have to agree that there is nothing wrong with the sound. On the contrary, this is a great quality recording and each of the pieces is worth the price of the disc. The cello sound is crystal clear. I still have no favorites, well maybe the Bartok piece but it is difficult to say depending on one's mood. Each piece is interesting and captivating enough to make you listen to it more than once. I would like to listen to more of Stephen Albert's works and to recommend the Rouse's Cello Concerto with Yo Yo Ma and Zinman.

5 out of 5 stars Yo-Yo Ma In "New York," Or Is It Baltimore?.......2000-09-26

"The New York Album" by Yo-Yo Ma is an outstanding recording of three 20th century compositions for cello. However, the disc should be titled "The Baltimore Album," as they were made with the Baltimore Symphony (with David Zinman conducting) and were recorded in Charm City -- I guess Baltimore doesn't have the cachet of the Big Apple. The reason for the CD's title is that the three composers featured here and Ma himself were either born or have lived in New York.

First, I'd like to address the concerns of the previous reviewer. This individual must not be familiar with the dynamics of classical music. Sure there are quiet parts featuring only Ma and louder moments when the whole orchestra joins in, but it is no different than any other recording. They may be more pronounced than usual in the Albert composition (for effect), but it never borders on poor sound quality. This is a digital recording -- it is state of the art and it sounds wonderful. I don't think Sony Classical or Yo-Yo Ma would have their names associated with such an inferior product. Maybe he/she needs a new stereo?

With that said, let's get to disc's material. "The New York Album" begins with Stephen Albert's haunting and expressive Concerto for Cello and Orchestra. This is the world premiere recording of this piece, commissioned by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Unfortunately, it is also one of Albert's final pieces as he sadly died in a car accident in 1992, before this CD was released. Bartok's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra is next, and it gives us the opportunity to hear Ma on alto violin, a vertical viola. (Like the Third Piano Concerto, the Viola Concerto was unfinished at the time of Bartok's death, and the task of deciphering the sketches and completing the work for both was entrusted to Tibor Serly.) The final composition is a rhapsody for cello entitled "Schelomo" by Ernest Bloch. I was not familiar with the composer prior to purchasing this disc, and his work is a soulful, often tumultuous piece that fits perfectly in terms of style with the other material despite the fact that it was authored almost 30 and 70 years earlier than the Bartok and Albert respectively.

In all, this is another wonderful outing for Yo-Yo Ma, and fans of his work should not hesitate to go to "New York."

2 out of 5 stars Bad Recording.......2000-04-03

I had a hard time listening to this CD simply because I couldn't hear parts of it. It sounded like it was recorded live in a hollow concert hall with bad acoustics. The quiet parts would barely come through my speakers...so I would go to turn it up. Then when the rest of the orchestra joined I was blasted out. I was so annoyed at having to adjust the volume for many of the tracts. I wasted my money when buying this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great buy of difficult to find music!.......2004-12-20

This CD is a wonderful buy. Although recorded in 1959 and 1960, the stereo sound is perfectly acceptable and the playing by the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra is also very good. I had this album on a vinyl record and didn't hesitate to buy the CD version. You can't go wrong for this price!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2004-11-09

These are the definitive Bloch Concerti Grossi, as far as I'm concerned.

All of the performances are absolutely perfect, and the transfers are spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars A supreme recording.......2001-08-26

I first heard this as vinyl many, many years ago. Its re-release on CD was like hearing from an an old friend. This is the greatest performance of these Concerti Grossi I have ever heard. From the spiky first movement of #1 to the lyricism made new in #2, the music reveals Bloch's authority and majesty. If you think Concerti Grossi must be from the Baroque era, this music, written in the 1920s and 1950s, respectively, will be a delight.

5 out of 5 stars Wings across the years.......2000-07-07

These extraordinary performances recorded at the Eastman Theatre, Rochester, in the late 50s, show no sign of fading. In aesthetic, presentation and sound, they are as fresh and vital as when they first came out...and I remember when they did, about 1960.

The greater part of the accolades, of course, go to Howard Hanson, whose tenacity and talent changed how the USA and the world looked at and listened to American music. Here he is in top form before the outstanding ensemble he built. In the concerti, the point and attack so necessary in Bloch is there, the virtusoity is there, the songfulness and emotion most definitely there. What's remarkable is that Hanson doesn't make a point of it...his Bloch aesthetic is by now so ingrained in our collective conscience that imagining a slack performance of any Bloch piece is brainwork, indeed.

The outstanding Miquelle works into the scheme very well, too. His Schelomo is the meditative king that eschews the rhetoric, bluster, bounce and noise we often get in the work. His Gallic tone is intimate, pure, on point, and even diminuitive at times without in any way being retiring or pusilanimous. He and Hanson stick very close to the music and by doing less, they express more. Miquelle and Hanson's way won't appeal to those who seek "virtuosismo", but will reward those who seek Bloch's creative thought and compositional process. In that way, it's a unique and extraordinary performance.

If you don't know Bloch, this is a superlative way to start (my third grade music teacher played these performances on a Magnavox console for us kids and we immediately loved the music). Thanks to Wilma Cozart for refurbing her own sessions so effectively, and Mercury for bringing back these historic performances for more generations to experience.

5 out of 5 stars Great cello playing.......2005-02-13

These are the very best recordings ever made by Zara Nelsova. This is great cello playing: total control and musicianship. Some of this stuff hasn't been available for 30-40 years, like the Beethoven sonatas, the Dvorak with Krips, the Lalo, and others. It also has some amazing pieces by Bloch, including her best recording of Schelomo, Voice in the Wilderness, and Jewish Life with the composer at the piano. The sound is good, mono, but still high quality. One drawback is that you can often Nelsova's fingers hitting the fingerboard. The intensity and personality really comes through though, and I can't recommend this collection of outstanding cello playing highly enough.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great CD to explore Cello Music.......2001-04-12

The Elgar was performed so beautifully and so was the Bloch. The huge pieces were carried with viruosity. Iserliss is a great player and this is largely apparent in the shorter Tchaikovsky pieces (Andante Cantabile, Nocturne, Pezzo Cappriccioso) because the phrases were so charming and you just let the sound of the cello melt in your ear. This is an awesome deal so buy it and be careful where you leave your CD because a minor scratch keeps me from listening to the Kabalevsky Concerto.

4 out of 5 stars It's the 2nd CD itself that's mislabeled, NOT the CD case.......2001-03-14

Like the first reviewer, I, too, was disappointed when I first opened this 2-CD set. Among the listings on the back of the CD case are the tracks for Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rocco Theme for Cello and Orchestra" and Strauss' "Don Quixote", which are supposed to be on the 2nd CD. However, on the CD, itself, is printed the label, "RAVEL: Chamber Music (The Nash Ensemble).

Well, turns out, it's the CD itself that's mislabeled, not the CD case; for upon playing it your realize that the CD contains the tracks exactly as listed on the back of the CD case (with Steven Isserlis on the cello, I presume).

Anyway, this is a fine 2-CD set, passionately played, with well-recorded sound. And for the price, it's an exceptional deal!

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong!.......1999-12-29

If the 2nd CD in the package was misplaced it was probably a packaging error - I doubt Virgin would intentionally distribute a recording labelled as something else. For either cello connoisseurs who aren't familiar with many of Steven Isserlis' recordings or a novice who wants a sampling of some of the great cello concerto masterpieces played REALLY well, you can't go wrong with this bargain reissue. The sound is gorgeous, intense, and there aren't many other places you'll find any interpretations of the original version of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations of Kabalevsky's powerful unjustly neglected 2nd concerto.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest piece of Jewish Music =s Handel's Messiah.......2005-03-02

This is a great recording of one of the greatest pieces of religious music, not just for Jews but for Christians alike. Only one recording better: Bernstein's classic recording on vinyl with his New York Symphony and the late great Leonard Warren, sadly not available on CD, (so far as I know). (Pray for Bernstein's CD availability, then demand it, from the powers that be!) [Yes, this recording is a little better than the South African recording, I have all three!]

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Bloch recordings.......2004-12-17

This recording features three of Ernest Bloch's better known pieces.

Schelomo (Hebrew for Solomon), is probably Bloch's most famous work, having been recorded by many of the great orchestras in the world and has been conducted by the best including Leonard Bernstein.

The Hebrew Suite was originally composed as a duo for violin and piano with this later arrangement fashioned for orchestra with violin obliggato. This recording offers the only available orchestrated version of this deep and moving piece.

Bloch's only violin concerto is among his finest works and the Prague Orchestra's recording is one of the best.

70 minutes of sublime music with the mysterious flavor that only Bloch can deliver.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2005-11-25

Beautiful, soulful playing. Although I have heard these pieces played by other cellists/orchestras, to me these are definitive performances. I had not heard Ofra Harnoy before either but I seem to be able to identify her playing now. As I was listening to a piece by Elgar on my way home from work a few hours ago I was captivated by the cello. I thought to myself "this sounds like Ofra Harnoy". When I got home I checked the radio schedule and it was indeed her. Now I'm listening to music samples of her other recordings on Amazon. I should add that just as Elgar's cello concerto was Jacqueline De Pre's signature piece, Bruch's Kol Nidrei is to me the piece which best expresses the unique qualities of Ofra's playing. Minor keys become her. And for some reason I am always reminded of Hebreic melodies/scales/keys by her playing.

PS: There is someone who has posted several 1 star reviews for Ofra Harnoy's recordings (curious that he totally pans one album and then apparently buys another and says pretty much the same thing about that one). I would recommend that you disregard those reviews.
