Album Description
Part III of the Clavier-Übung, presents an unprecedented collection of twenty-one chorale preludes. The entire cycle of chorale preludes and the four duets are enclosed within an imposing prelude and fugue. The musical skill and variety of treatment which Bach has given the chorales have rarely if ever been surpassed elsewhere within his vast œuvre. In a sense, the Third Part of the Clavier-Übung is of significance to the organ in the way that the Goldberg Variations are to the harpsichord. In fact the pre-eminent authority, Christoph Wolff has asserted that: "In part III, Bach created not only his most extensive but also his most significant organ work." It stands, together with his Musical Offering and the Art of Fugue, as several of the most profound musical monuments of all time.

I have listened to this CD for the last several years before going to sleep at night. I love classical music, and this is great music to help make my soul feel at peace and unwind after a taxing day.

I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!

Yes this CD will put you to sleep in minutes. Its the most boring uninspiring classical music. The first CD was very good but this Vol. 2 is like most movie sequels....AWFUL !

I love these CDS . . what a brilliant idea to add a beat to the most popular classical songs of all time. It is great upbeat music that gets you going. I specifically use it for when I need a boost to get me going on housework. It get you in just the right mood to start working. My kids love it too.

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

Part III of the Clavier- bung, presents an unprecedented collection of twenty-one chorale preludes. The entire cycle of chorale preludes and the four duets are enclosed within an imposing prelude and fugue. The musical skill and variety of treatment which Bach has given the chorales have rarely if ever been surpassed elsewhere within his vast uvre. In a sense, the Third Part of the Clavier- bung is of significance to the organ in the way that the Goldberg Variations are to the harpsichord. In fact the pre-eminent authority, Christoph Wolff has asserted that: In part III, Bach created not only his most extensive but also his most significant organ work. It stands, together with his Musical Offering and the Art of Fugue, as several of the most profound musical monuments of all time.
