This is the sequel to Yo-Yo Ma's wildly successful Simply Baroque, released last year. Again joined by the excellent Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, with Ton Koopman conducting from the harpsichord, he plays with a baroque bow on his 1712 Stradivarius cello "reconfigured" as a baroque instrument with gut strings and no endpin and tuned a half-tone lower. This gives it a mellower, more subdued sound, though his tone, despite very sparing vibrato, retains its unique expressive warmth and purity. (In concert, he currently performs on his Montagnana cello and one made recently by the well-known American luthiers Moes & Moes.) The program again features two Boccherini concertos and a group of Bach transcriptions for cello and orchestra by Koopman, including the Aria from the Goldberg Variations. These are only intermittently successful and make great demands on the soloist. Ma, of course, meets the demands handily, soaring to stratospheric heights, blending into the orchestra, and weaving figurations around it. The Boccherini concertos are the core of the record, notably the famous B-flat, for which Ma and Koopman went back to the originals in search of a more authentic version than the familiar one (which was actually conflated later from several others by Grützmacher, a cellist and editor). Here, Ma has ample opportunity to display his virtuosity, his charm, and his pleasure in intimate give-and-take with the orchestra; one can almost see him smile. The result is pure delight. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-06-11

If you enjoy cello music and classical music, this is a great CD with one of the best cellist's out there. I bought it to hear how these period pieces should sound. I'll be happy if I can even get to half the quality of performance Ya exhibits. If you enjoy classical works and may not have any cello music in particular, this album is a good, enjoyable selection for any collection.

2 out of 5 stars Makes you sleepy.......2007-02-21

This CD offers music from two composers, J. S. Bach and L. Boccherini. Several famous pieces from each composer are included here as performed by Yo Yo Ma. Having heard all the pieces before on other CD's, I did not like the instrumentation offered here. Many of the pieces were quite subtle and played with too little life. The instrumentation was too little as most of these pieces sound better with a whole symphony playing it, where here it was only a couple of instruments. Overall, not that great a CD.

5 out of 5 stars Concerts in a sailboat's cockpit.......2005-10-20

I discovered the first CD of these two when sailing in British Columbia this summer and played it over and over again when sipping wine under fine sunsets in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. There can be no better accompainment to the soft rocking of the boat and a fine wine. This second CD is as wonderful as the first. Pure lisening pleasure.

3 out of 5 stars no that hot.......2001-03-04

I usually love Ma, but I don't know why I am not so hot on both of the new super discks. Perhaps it is the miking. I'm surprised noone mentioned it. My CD player is a Meridian. I would be interested in hearing how this effects the pleasure of listening to CDs.

4 out of 5 stars Yo Yo Ma provides inspirational classical music........2001-02-04

Although I am not a musician or music expert, I can listen to this music many times and not get tired of it. It has the qualities embedded in it which I look for to keep me interested in its passages. Classical music such as this style should be mandatory listening in our school systems which are looking for things worth teaching. The pre-teens minds are being diluted with the current pop music. Our youth have little appreciation for the great things in life.

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hymns for every one.......2002-12-01

As I have said already..I am from espiscopal church..these my songs are well know by me...these songs give encouragement when it seems that all hope is lost..these are tunes that are well received....they are also very simple for the every day person to gain strength from day to day..they will become your daily prayer.....

5 out of 5 stars Super Praise!.......2000-06-10

Praise The Lord offers the listener traditional hymns in the English/British tradition. the clarity of the voices make it possible for the listener to follow the words distinctly. The organ soars as accompaniment. the CD provides organ and choral quality for the novice and the experienced musician.

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.

4 out of 5 stars hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

5 out of 5 stars Rich sounds and glorious music.......2003-08-03

I would like to second the comments made by Mr. Michael Holmes. This is a very worthy recording of some fabulous music. Undoubtedly this music would benefit from the use of Chor-ton (Kornett-ton) i.e. a' = 466 Hz, but this doesn't bother me in this case and the use of modern concert pitch a' = 440 Hz seems to be a good compromise to me.
I the combination of Baroque violins (with their sharp, incisive timbre), cornetti (with their characteristic silvery transparent sound) and the edgy sound of natural trumpets - all playing together in the same range - is a sound that is very beguiling.

Roland Wilson's Musica Fiata Köln recorded some of these works for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi around thirteen years ago and if Mr. Robert King's disc has fired your interest in Johann Schelle's music then Wilson's earlier recording is well worth having, too!

Listen to the King's Consort recording of the large scaled cantata 'Lobe dem Herrn' (track 1) - this is a fine example of Schelle's power as a composer.

5 out of 5 stars For now, a very worthy effort.......2003-06-22

While one of the other reviewers has brought up some valid criticisms, I'd like to point out that these are minor issues that in my opinion warrant a higher-than-four-star rating. From a historical point of view, one could even claim that King's decision to record the works of Johann Schelle at A=440 pitch instead of the more appropriate A=466 is cause for a reduction in its validity. However, I shall take a view from a period performer's perspective. The choice to perform or record at A=466 is a very [costly] one. For example, some of the wind players would need to buy entirely new instruments, because the pitch adjustment of transposing up a half tone is far too awkward and unnatural for the lower-pitched instruments. Also, making copies of old instruments at A=440 is really a modern compormise. Roland Wilson's ensemble "Musica Fiata" from Köln, Germany actually required their sackbut (trombone) players to transpose the music up one half-tone in their recent Schelle recording. This transposition makes the fundamental pitch of the trombone A instead of B-flat. However, their cornetto players performed on instruments actually made for high pitch.

Perhaps the King's Consort is not yet ready for a change to high pitch. I am certain that they have seriously considered this as well as the considerable timbral differences that this makes. For the Brits, this is a practical compromise, and I'm sure that very soon, the late seventeenth-century repertoire will soon be played in the UK at the right pitch.

All things considered, I'm basing my five-star rating mainly on the performance and the general production. I know the Hyperion label very well, and I admire the great things they are doing for music listeners of refined tastes. King meets the incredible challenge of this rare music with great flair. When compared to the "Musica Fiata" recording of Schelle's cantatas and sacred concertos on the CPO label, I would probably rate MF a bit higher. However, if one is interested in exploring the unique wealth of Schelle's sound world, one should probably own both of these CD's, which offer mostly different works. In common with both recordings is the concerto "Lobe dem Herrn, meine Seele."

The execution of the sophisticated and highly difficult trumpet parts on Wilson's recording is by far superior to King's result. However, this doesn't mean that King's recoding is negative.

Of special note in the present recording is the ravishingly beautiful (in a Lutheran pietist sense) performance of the concerto "Christus, der ist mein Leben" which is scored for four separate violins, four gambas, soloists, choir and continuo. Also, the cantata "Von Himmel kam der Engel Schar" is likely to surprise anyone who is skeptical about late seventeenth-century German church music as being "inferior" to "J.S. Bach the pinnacle of the baroque age." Just by listening to the opening of this cantata, one can hear very clearly that Bach developed from a steadily evolving cultural tradition and that he did not emerge suddenly from a vacuum.

One wonderful instrument that was curiously falling out of use in Bach's day was the cornetto, a highly agile chromatic instrument with a history of its own, separate from the trumpet. In Schelle, we can hear the mixture of trumpets, cornettos and trombones. This creates a splendid texture, which in many ways allows the music even more fluidness and expressivity that much eighteenth-century music lacks.

I salute Robert King for helping to finally uncover the still under-recorded (and under-published) riches from the era between Schütz and J.S. Bach. Recommended are the other two Hyperion CDs in this series: church concertos and cantatas by Knüpfer and Kuhnau, two masters in the long line of great cantors of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

4 out of 5 stars Another good Bach predecessor.......2001-10-17

It's been enjoyable to follow the revelation by the King's Consort of just how good Bach's predecessors were (and how good the Consort, too). Schelle was the last but one kantor before the accession of J. S. Bach at the Thomaskirche, Leipzig. Bach is known to have borrowed text and melodies from Schelle, and here you can hear why. Schelle is a very good composer once famed for "divine simplicity and sweetness," according to the disc notes. The grand opening and closing pieces are festive in their pomp and verve, featuring magnificently played high cornetts and trumpets. The two funeral motets of mourning are still quietly effective. In the cantata, "Lord, teach us to remember," Schelle cleverly includes four other chorale tunes as if in fact to test the congregation's memory for them! The final Christmas cantata ends with a surprising but ineffable fade out into eternity that is not an engineering trick. The pieces well express the moods of the varied texts, and occasionally exhibit acutely expresssed word painting. They do not have as strong a musical contour as the most memorable of J.S. Bach's works. Rather than intricate counterpoint Schelle usually employs an alternation of lighter solo voices and small choral tutti, often in parallel motion with simple sweet harmony from strings and continuo.

These pieces do not sound like exotic antique music but are solidly within the Protestant choral tradition and worth reviving today. Unlike the preceding Knüpfer disc in this series from the King's Consort, each of the 5-11 minute pieces is assigned only one track number (and when did you last see an index number for access to subsections?). That won't help learning them. Twice I thought I heard voice entries clipped short by the engineers. Note that the order of the commentary in the text differs from the order of the music on the disc. Although Schelle's music was preserved haphazardly on musty paper, we can be glad. One wonders, what are the chances another 300 years from now for today's music on acidic paper, magnetic tape, or plastic CD?

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Schuetz.......2004-06-03

This recording is a good introduction to the work of Heinrich Schuetz. The excerpts from Psalmen Davids are well-chosen examples of his work. Summerly and his group perform the works gracefully and intimately. The inclusion of Schein's organ pieces is a plus since it cuts the monotony of motet after motet. If you have never heard Schuetz's lovely music, this is a good place to start. My favorite piece on the disc is "Erhoere mich", a duet for two sopranos and continuo. The sopranos, Carys Anne Lane and Rebecca Outram have remarkably clear and vibratoless voices. They blend very well together and with the organ continuo. I also enjoy listening to "Singet dem Herr ein neues Lied." This recording made me want to listen to more Schuetz. At this price, you don't want to pass up this recording.

      3 out of 5 stars why?.......2003-04-07

Why didn't Summerly record all 26 psalms? the work is far from being satisfied!!!

2 out of 5 stars Schutz as He Never Intended.......2000-03-18

From a strictly vocal perspective, this recording is perfectly fine. I bought it with the sumptuous sonorities of Venice in mind, however, which is what Schutz had in mind when he wrote the Psalmen Davids. What Summerly delivers is a minimalist version where the instrumental accompaniment is limited to a continuo organ which cannot possibly supply the added dimensions Schutz intended to incorporate through the use of instrumental parts. For those who want to hear the legacy of Schutz' experience in Venice with Gabrieli in these wonderful works, they would do well to look to another recording, perhaps the version done by Musica Fiata.

3 out of 5 stars One of the best Schutz anthologies on disc........1998-09-16

Apart from being well performed this is also a well thought out selection. Half the tracks on this CD, 6 out of 12, are taken from Schutz' 1619 Opus "Psalms of David", large-scale polychoral settings following his teacher Gabrieli's model. They are performed sensitively here and counterposed with lighter works (such as the soprano duet "Erhore mich wenn ich rufe" and the bass solo "Ich liege und schlafe", both taken from the Kleine Geistliche Konzerte II of 1639). The program concludes with Schutz' graveside memorial motet to his friend Schein framed with a couple of Schein's pavans on either side, and then the final Magnificat from his own swansong opus. 64'08" playing time, full texts and translations. And all this at a sub-budget price.

          Album Description

The latest volume in the acclaimed re-packaging of the complete Bach Cantata series on Challenge Classics, which has now reached Vol. 18! Ton Koopman and his choir and orchestra continue to uphold a standard of tremendous vividness and joy in their immaculate performances of Bach's most impressive opus. The acclaimed series of complete Bach cantatas with The Amsterdam Baroque conducted by Ton Koopman, originally begun on the now-defunct Erato label, has been revived by Challenge Classics. Born in Zwolle, Holland, in 1944, Ton Koopman decided very early in his musical studies to specialize in the 17th and 18th centuries, using authentic instruments combined with a performing style based on sound scholarship. Koopman's extensive activities as a soloist and conductor have been recorded on a large number of LPs and CDs for labels including Erato, Teldec, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world with a particular passion for the Baroque. Their recordings have won numerous awards. Founded in 1992, the Amsterdam Baroque Choir consists mainly of young Dutch professional singers. Begun in 1994, this series was called "the recording project of the nineties" by The Guardian, and was awarded the 1997 Deutsche Schallplattenpreis "Echo Klassik" in Germany. The series will continue to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world's leading experts on the music of Bach.

As One of the Most Legendary Champions of Bach Karl Richter's Many (And in Some Instances Multiple) Recordings of the Composers Cantata's Arguably is his Greatest Achievement. Richter Enlisted Many of the Finest Vocalists in their Prime During the 1950's Through the Early 70's for These Recordings Elevating the Neglected Form at the Time to the Level of Grand Opera. His Conducting, Especially for his Day as Well Remains Remarkably Animated and Fluent Yet Always Respectful of Bach's Underlying Powerful Architectural Components. These Recordings Set the Standard and for Many Today Remain the Benchmark Performances by which all New Ones Continue to Be Judged.

5 out of 5 stars Bach in the Bach Tradition.......2006-12-16

I believe I owe it to the period performance movement for making me feel like I am committing a sin when I don't listen to Gardiner's or Hogwood's Bach (or Handel, or any Baroque composer for that matter). If, say, I put in Shaw's recording of the B minor mass, or most certainly Klemperer's recording of the St. Mathew passion, I feel that I should somehow be ashamed for what I am doing. There may be some type of Freudian truth buried deep within my being ashamed; however, there has always been an exception to my modern instrument guilts. This is, of course, the Bach recordings of Karl Richter; and more specifically, Richter's immortal survey of the sacred cantatas (well, 75 of them anyway). I received this set as a gift when I graduated from college, and I have been constantly listening since. The music of Bach has meant more to me than any other composer, and the Richter recordings show Bach's true genius at full speed ahead.

Don't get me wrong, I love Gardiner's recordings of the B-minor mass and the St. Matthew Passion; and I do believe that period performance practice reveals a totally new dimension of Bach which can sometimes be overlooked (or, "glossed-over" as the case may be with Klepmerer and others of the like). However, any academic arguments favoring Gardiner over Richter are simply meaningless to me. As Glenn Gould said, its not the type of instruments used that count, but rather, a deep respect for the innate structures of the music; this is what's important, and to accomplish this he believed that we must get rid of the incorrect and outdated notion that by "glossing over" these structures, it somehow improves upon them. I think Gould is absolutely correct in saying its respect for the musical structures that counts most; this is the only duty incumbent upon interpreters of Baroque music (and especially Bach). With this in mind, how can Richter not be the supreme interpreter? Richter gives us Bach in the Bach tradition, and I believe that this is in no small part due to his deep understanding of the same Lutheranism which was in the mind of Bach when he wrote this glorious music. To quote yet another Bach authority, Albert Schweitzer once said "Only he who sinks himself into Bach's emotional world, who lives and thinks with him, [...] can rightly bring Bach's music to the listener". I can think of no one who fits the description quite like Karl Richter.

Well, all arguments aside, the music on these 26 [!] discs are absolutely unsurpassed. I was a bit worried before I received this set, as I knew that in Richter's latter years, he did seem to take various liberties with the scores (more specifically, a slowing of the tempi to the point that it takes us out of the Bach tradition). However, I can safely say that these rumored liberties are nowhere to be found in this set, just pure Bach. I wont dare try to single out notable performances of this massive set (I would be here all night, and I am sure you are becoming tired of reading this anyway). However, one cantata specifically stood out for me during my first few hours with the set (and has since stuck with me); this being BWV 132 (4th Sunday in Advent cantata). This specific cantata, can speak for the entire set in terms of the soloist supremacy above all other Bach cantata recordings (how can you go wrong with Edith Mathis, Anna Reynolds, Peter Schreier, and Theo Adam - with Ursula Buckel and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau elsewhere on the set).

So, finally, this set has exactly what I want in a survey of the cantatas - that is, the genius of J.S. Bach is in the driver's seat, not the conductors. While Gardiner has his moments (and when he does, they are fantastic), and Klemperer did at least get everyone talking about Bach again, I believe Richter's interpretations are the standard by which this music should be played and heard. This set is a landmark in the history of Bach recordings, and although quite expensive, it really should be in the collections of all lovers of music.

          - By the way, the set comes in a large slipcover (as shown above by Amazon), with the five original fold-open cases inside; each made of an extremely sturdy, glossy-coated cardboard (as shown above by me [hopefully]). Each disc is in a paper sleeve.

4 out of 5 stars A Time Capsule of Sheer Delight.......2006-12-15

I treasured these recordings as a music student in high school and college in the '70's. Although newer, 'historically correct' recordings were emerging, Richter's musicality, if one will, still attracted me to these Archive recordings. This set is a bargin considering all the music there is to digest. DG's remastering is excellent-the warm analog sound does not suffer what can sometimes be a strident digitized reincarnation. DG's engineers and hardware were always on the cutting edge and these recordings speak to that fact. Say what one will about the oddities of interpertation, there is music in evey bar. Before I began listening, I though that I should prepare myself to forgive Richer for his position in history and look the other way when so called historically inaccurate idioms presented themselves. Yes, they are there, but, the younger listener will be quite astonished to find amazing vitality and sweep of phrase and articulation. Richter's tempi are often suprisingly brisk. The roster of soloists speaks for itself. If you are a musician interested in the genesis of Bach interpertation, this set is a must-have. It is often said that many Bach conductors after Richter took up where he left off. This group of recordings is a testament to his influence. Bravo DG !
