Others may have been greater interpreters, but Ezio Pinza had arguably the most beautiful, mellifluous, even, smooth bass voice of the century. Even heard in the usually comprimario-filled part of Ferrando in Verdi's Il Trovatore, he rules the roost with his rolling, handsome, and accurately placed sound; in greater roles, including Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra, Philip in Don Carlos, and Silva in Ernani, he's simply staggering, producing a seemingly endless stream of round, warm tone, infused with the requisite drama for each part and a sense of line that makes one feel entirely comfortable. His great musicality never steers him wrong--the Bellini and Rossini excerpts here are just as fine. Don't miss. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Exciting Early Warren.......2007-01-16

Leonard Warren must have been electric in person. His ended tragically on stage in 1960, but these recordings, made in 1940, show his voice at its most youthful. The highlight, for me, is the prologue from Pagliacci. Several of the other excerpts feature less-than-ideal soloists (except for Eleanor Steber in Traviata who is terrific) and faster than normal tempi (perhaps because of timing constraints of 78rpm recordings), but if you want to hear Warren at the beginning of his career, this is the recording to get.

      5 out of 5 stars A voice unmatched.......2004-11-24

The 29 year old baritone made some of his very first recordings on behalf of the New York Post--the Post was recording opera excerpts as a way to beef up its cultural reputation around the area. This CD contains opera excerpts from this recording series and reveals Warren's voice in its most glorious form. The magnificent size of his voice can be heard on any of his recordings. However, here, his voice has a ring and brilliance to it that he lost in later years. He had the tendency to cover more and not always use the core of his voice during his later, more common recordings. But in these excerpts, his voice is consistant all the way through his incredible range. And his "Cortigiani, vil razza dannata" is the most heartfelt, believable rendition I have heard to this day (he puts more popular renditions--like Sherrill Milnes'--to shame). His voice is so exquisitely beautiful, but yet torn and angry at being unable to find his daughter, Gilda. No doubt his time in Italy several years earlier had something to do with his completely assimilating the role of Rigoletto (he spent some time there learning huge Verdi roles through his own study...simply to prepare them for later life). His voice is unique not for its size, but for its remarkable consistency throughout and for the fact that--especially in this recording--he is able to capture that same brilliance in his voice that other mere mortals must push and force out at the expense of their technique and depth. His technique is remarkable at such a young age. No one on these recordings can really begin to compete with the presence inherent in his voice. However, his voice blends very well with most sopranos and his ensemble numbers often contain his best singing. His Traviata excerpts with a young Eleanor Steber are quite exquisite. Warren's voice really is the most magnificent ever bestowed on a baritone.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Just one omission.......2001-02-02

There is another recording of "Goodbye" by N.Melba on Victor 95012,released in the US in 1905.I wonder why it is not included in this "complete" Romophone release?

5 out of 5 stars Prima Donna Assoluta.......1999-11-29

Just how much Nellie Melba can one take at one sitting? Judging by this set an awful lot and that is no mean achievement given the unflattering recording, and Melba's maddening habit of recording an aria again and again. Melba's singing lacks charm - judging from contemporary reports the lady could boast little of this anyway. But it has an astonishing technique, a limpid and glorious tone, and at times some indefinable but terribly moving quality. A great, great singer - in fact for my money marginally the best on record.

5 out of 5 stars In a class by herself.......1999-11-23

Melba achieves perfection more often than any other singer (with the exception of Pol Plancon). Her phrases, her high notes, her ritardandi are beyond conventional emotion and beauty. There is something almost otherworldly in her best moments. In the grand Puccini arias, she seems at first too cool, too controlled. But you soon notice her supreme artistry as well as the fire, the sheer physical force just beneath the utterly smooth surface. In fact, she is sometimes more explosive, more dramatic, than the great Callas herself. And she gives so much of herself! In the Boheme arias, her generosity is perhaps most apparent. In marveling at one perfect top note after another, one almost does not realize how cohesive she can make the pieces seem, how architectural and intelligent her approach is.

5 out of 5 stars Only One Melba.......1999-02-12

That was certainly Dame Nellie's assessment of herself, and she must have been something. Yes, both Peach Melba and Melba toast are named after her, and yes, she was worshipped. Even such a curmudgeon as Bernard Shaw could appreciate her greatness. Puccini praised the fact that she sang HIS music, not "Melba-Puccini." So why, then, do her recordings not reveal to us the scope of her artistry? Granted, we can marvel at the technical accomplishments (listen, for example, to the "Hamlet" mad scene, or "Sweet Bird") and occasionally catch a phrase that makes us understand what she was about, but she lacks the grandeur and opulence of Ponselle, or the tender vulnerability of Galli-Curci. It may be that Melba was, after all, an artist of the theatre, and that the cramped, primitive conditions of early recording studios simply did not inspire her to her greatest work. However, for devotees of Golden Age voices, this Romophone set is indispensible. The transfers are masterfully done, so that even those allergic to the acoustic sound of early recordings will not be bothered.
