2 out of 5 stars hmmmm.......2005-09-14

definitely not the best rendition of the popular suite.on the other hand, try finding another one.
stuff is edited,bludgeoned,rather.
tempos verge on comical.
rather disapointing,I really needed a nice version of the sugar plum faerie dance.
will probably stick to Wendy Carlos's,cheesy, runningly cheesy, blue cheese smelly, even,as it might be,still holds the original pace and campy pomp.

...not nuch of a cheese shop is it?
-it's fairly clean.
certainly not contaminated by Cleese!

2 out of 5 stars Good Introduction but poor quality.......2005-09-12

This is a good introduction to Tchaikovsky for the beginner that gives a broad sampling of his work. Considering the price, it's a good value if someone is just wanting to begin exploring classical music or Tchaikovsky in particular.
However, the sound quality on this albumn is quite poor and there are much higher quality Tchaikovsky recordings available.

5 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky's Greatest Pieces of Music.......2000-09-04

Here are some of Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky's greatest works. His Nutcraker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty ballets are the most famous in the repoirtaire. The Symphony No. 5 and 6 are very excellent symphonic orchestrations. However, despite all the good stuff in here from the Russian master, the performers and conductors cannot surpass the beauty and artistry that such Tchaikovsky music masters as Dorati, Markevitch and Ormandy are. So if you want quality Tchaikovsky, get those conductor renditions. However, for a Tchaikovsky beginner, these pieces will get you hooked. This is a good cd to begin with for a Tchaikovsky listener. I am a Tchaikovsky listener ever since a friend recommended his glorious works to me. I am a Mozart fan but Tchaikovsky is undoubtedly the greatest Romantic composer of all time. He combines Russian melodies (Russian dances, mazurkas, waltzes) and gives them a definite Western romantic feel. He was friends with such noted Romantic composers as Camille Saint Saens, known to create such marvelous music of the era- Carnival of the Animals (now popular through Dysney) and Danse Macabre, to name only a small portion. Tchaikovsky also adored Mozart and although he is not exactly a Classical composer, he greatly admires the beauty of Mozart's works. Three cheers for Tchaikovsky !

1 out of 5 stars great music poorely performed........1999-09-18

T. is my favourite composer but the interpretation on this CD is rather like a good effort in high shool

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......1999-04-18

I think that Peter Tchaikovsky is one of the greatest composers ever. His Nutcracker suite and Capriccio Italien are wonderful pieces of music, as well as the rest of his pieces! This CD is definetly worth owning if you like classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Good selection.......2005-10-02

I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.

5 out of 5 stars thunderous applause.......2005-08-31

This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06

I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars You will like this!.......2004-02-19

I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection and some were better than others.

This CD is at the top of them all. They may be short, but not that short. Wondrous music.

I can almost guarantee that you will like this music.
Well worth the price!

3 out of 5 stars Good for the novice.......2002-06-08

The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

3 out of 5 stars Almost really good........2006-06-30

I love Prokofiev. But I hate Yank crap. It has spoiled a great compilation. It was beautiful, up until 'Peter and the Wolf', one of my favourite adventures. But then along came an American narrator explaining the story. Why is there this 'Disney' crap amidst some beautiful music? (All respects to Walt).
'Lieutenant Kije' is one of the best stories produced by humanity of a man who did not exist throughout his birth, marriage and death. Don't let this piece of brilliance be swamped by crap.
A good compilation, but I strongly suggest you go for untainted versions of Prokofiev.
P.S. The Daleks will eventually conquer staircases. Be warned. Three oranges are not enough.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer on the iconclastic Russian composer.......2001-08-12

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed there was nothing from Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3, which is what the Amy Irving character played in the film, "The Competition." I also think it is one of the iconoclastic composer's finest works. What you will find on this collection are a lot of excerpts from his score for the film "Lieutenant Kije" and symphonic fairy tale "Peter and the Wolf." Again, I am surprised there is nothing here from his film scores for "Alexander Nevsky" or "Ivan the Terrible." My favorite "new" piece that I discovered on this CD would be the March from "The Love for Three Oranges," although I also like the excerpt from Prokofiev's Classical Symphony in D Major. Despite my personal preferences, I have to admit this collection is a very nice introduction to the music of Sergei Sergeivich Prokofiev.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A famous "Little Russian" and more great Tchaikovsky from Giulini.......2006-09-26

Giulini's classic recording of the 'Little Russian' symphony was always one of his calling cards--it has real sweep and urgency, miles away from the less-than-vital conducting style he adopted in later years. The sonics are paper thin but clear, and the Philharmonia plays with commitment. I was grateful to hear such excitment in the first movement (by comparison the readings from Karajan, Abbado, and even Bernstein sound inert). The pointed woodwind playing in the second movement is tangy, the Scherzo bounces along like ballet music, and the finale remains grand without pomposity. How rare those virtues are in performances of the Tchaikovsky Second.

Francesca da Rimini is considerably better recorded, but I wish EMI had toned down the treble a little. Giulini's reading doesn't quite match the searing ones from Mravinsky, Stokowski, and Markevitch, but it's very good, with additional intensity form the highlighted recording. The Pathetique that follows was always well rgarded, even if once again Giulini can't match the incandescence of Mravinsky, the sheer virtuosity of Reiner with the Chicago Sym., or the personal intensty of Bernstein on DG. His is an ardent, heart-on-sleeve performance that appeals to me far more than, say, Jansons or Pletnev, however. The Scherzo is dashing and vibrant, and the finale, a minute or two slower than usual, feels melancholy rather than tragic. The recorded sound is the best so far on this bargain two-fer.

finally we get Giulini's Romeo and Juliet, also widely admired in its day forty years ago. By now te listener will appreciate the conductor's overall style, which is distinctly warm but not Russian, tending toward gentleness rather than blazing excitement. All the ardor of Rome and Juliet is brought out, yet the intensity remains restrained. All in all, EMI has ignored these recordings for a long time, and it's woderufl to have them gathered together in one place.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary performances by a master conductor!.......2005-12-13

Carlo Maria Giulini 's death on June has been possibly the saddest musical absences of this year. I won 't get tired to affirm the musical world lost a wise man in all sense. The happy meeting with the Philharmonia was a successful event, this orchestra is simply magnificent. Woods, strings, metals are extremely powerful and filled with aristocratic profile when you require it. Giulini and this ensemble made important contributions. Go for instance to his Mozart' s Symphonies 40 and 41 of 1965 (London Label, hard to get it, by the way)

His vision of Tchaikovsky 's Second Symphony is the most complete and integral I have ever heard previously or even later. There have been fortunate, powerful, sumptuous and perfumed versions: Markevitch and Muti have made striking performances. But anyone of them has been able to equal this unique and eloquent reading. Giulini made a true dissection, an openhearted and systematic interpretation filled with details without losing the apex of the work. He underlined literally all the ingredients that consolidate it as the most Imperial of his three First Symphonies. There is emotion, lyricism, vitality, energy, expressive elegance and visceral approach. There is not any detail you may refuse.

His Sixth Symphony deserves special mention. Absolutely idiomatic, profound and persuasive. Giulini went to the core of the score and extracted all the substance to expose before us one of the most relevant and pyramidal versions in the history of the disc. There is an admirable fact you always should take in mind every time you listen it. Go for the expressive Waltz of the second Movement and then go to the Fourth Movement and realize how the composer reintroduces the same Waltz but in a dark tonality This is the key.

Francesca de Rimini is rich in details, precise and dramatic, although the best rendition of this page comes from Munch and the Boston Symphony.

Romeo and Juliet is a magisterial version, filled of flair and panache; once more the virtuosity of the Orchestra allows us to watch those little details, such as modulation, tempi, and careful sense of expression.

This album deserves without any bit of doubt, to be placed in the coveted list of the best and more successful re mastering records of the Year. Not only due its artistic significance but besides, the sumptuous fidelity and polished sound.

Bravo for the Sound Engineers of EMI. I really hope future feats keep going like this extraordinary event.

A must-buy; it 's my most sincere recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite "Pathetique".......2005-05-25

There are lots of magical accounts of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony available on CD -- Monteux (see my review), Mravinsky, Reiner, Markevitch, Karajan, Ormandy, Barbirolli, Silvestri -- but my hands-down favorite account of the "Pathetique" has always been Giulini's 1959 recording with the Philharmonia. It was previously available in several CD incarnations from EMI but has been out-of-print for years...until now! With this release, EMI has produced another gem in the "Gemini" series, the label's new incredibly inexpensive two-disc budget classical line. This set features four glorious Giulini Tchaikovsky recordings -- the aforementioned 6th Symphony, the 2nd Symphony also known as "Little Russian" (a brilliant performance!), Romeo and Juliet, and Francesca da Rimini, all with the Philharmonia from the late 50s and early 60s in grand golden-age stereo. Like the 6th, the 2nd and Romeo have been available on CD previously but were also OOP prior to this reissue -- only the Francesca was currently in-print via an EMI Seraphim title. Now you can finally hear for yourself what all the fuss is about, and you don't have to spend a fortune to do it.

    5 out of 5 stars Tremendous performance of a much-loved work.......2006-03-04

Bernstein's late DG recordings have always been criticized for being slow and extremely flamboyant. However, this is what makes familiar warhorses sound new, and his approach always works. In fact, for me, most of his DG recordings have become the benchmark by which all other performances will be judged.

This recording of Tchaikovsky's great Fifth is definitely slower than most, but Bernstein always keeps things exciting by providing powerful brass and strong timpani. Fortissimos are actually true fortissimos, unlike other recordings of this work I have heard. The fourth movement is on the brisk side, though nowhere near as fast as Mravinsky's version, and it is simply an exhilarating interpretation that seems to always push forward. The gem of the entire CD though is the extremely magical performance of the Fifth's second movement. Played slower than most, it creates an impression of time standing still, and the entry of the solo horn is heart-melting.

Only Gergiev's live performance on Philips comes close to the excitement that Bernstein brings. This CD even has an outstanding Romeo and Juliet as a filler! I must say that after hearing the Fifth performed this way by Bernstein, I have never gone back to other recordings, as they now sound too boring. And I never understood the hype behind Jansons' performance, which is considered the definitive interpretation. Compared to Bernstein, Jansons delivers weak climaxes and crescendi, and his fortissimos are nowhere near the outbursts of Bernstein's.

5 out of 5 stars An enormous triumph for late Bernstein.......2006-01-14

This highly personal reading of the Tchaikovsky Fifth from 1988, when the conductor was 70, is an autumnal triumph for Bernstein. He always returned to the NY PHil. as a conquering hero, and they play for him with incrdible committment and emotional depth. This is the only performance of the Fifth that raises this often criticized work to the tragic level Tchaikovsky intended for it--by comparison Karajan, himself an excellent Tchaikovsky conductor, sounds superficial and Mravinsky brazen.

Tempos are slowish--LB takes 52 min. to Karajan's 48 min. in his middle set for DG. One notes also that DG's engineers have given the orchestra stupendous sonics in this live performance. The thrill of being there is vibrantly captured. Koussevitzky, who was Bernstein's godfather on the podium, made a Tchaikovsky Fifth in 78s with the BSO that romantically altered the tempo almost from bar to bar. Bernstein uses rubato almost as much, but whereas Koussevitzky draws attention to himself, his pupil finds a way to make the score transcendentally moving.

5 out of 5 stars A different, and yet wholly satisfying appraoch.......2005-11-26

I've heard a bunch from Bernstein (especially his later recordings) at this point, with mixed results in my opinion. I really hated his Dvorak 9th with the Israel Philharmonic. On the other side of the coin, I really liked his late 70's Beethoven cycle for DG, and his Mozart recordings from the early 1980's. Somewhere in the middle of these two extremes comes Bernstein's Brahms, which I found very good in chunks, but overall very mediocre in terms of construction and tempi. However, Bernstein and Tchaikovsky are like peas in a pod. His hyper-Romantic approach and vastly varied tempi work perfectly for Tchaikovsky's music. The recording quality is excellent, and the NY Philharmonic are playing their pants off for Bernstein. I like his rendition of the 6th as well, but his 5th is among the finest readings I have heard.
How ironic, that for Tchaikovsky's 5th, a piece I really love, I would find two accounts of vastly different approaches that I really loved; Bernstein's recording here, and Karajan's recording with the Berlin Philharmonic from 1978! In terms of tempi and sound, the two are at opposite ends of the spectrum - Karajan opts for a more linear time signature than Bernstein, and Karajan's recording was made in a studio while Bernstein's was live - and yet they both resonate with Tchaikovsky's musical vision. I implore anyone who owns this disc to pick up the Karajan 2-fer of 4,5 & 6 and compare these two readings. If you don't own either, get them both because both are golden in different, yet equally important ways.
Five stars for the Bernstein. Great reading, performance, and sonics.

5 out of 5 stars The Master At His Best.......2005-11-15

The Fifth, originally dedicated to Grieg only to be changed later, is Tchaikovsky's most delicate symphony. At the risk of sounding elitist, the ear required to truly appreciate this masterpiece demands patience and repeated listenings. This recording, however, is the vehicle for supreme enlightenment for no one perceives Tchaikovsky better than Bernstein. The fifth has it all, from the slow intro, to the rising chords of the first movement to the horn solo of the second that melts time itself. The symphony is the composer's most dreamy and miraculous although I tend to find the valse a little substandard, thematically and structurally the movements are perfect. Tchaikovsky was a master symphonist and this, in addition to his fourth and sixth also by Bernstein, prove it.

5 out of 5 stars A very wise and original approach!.......2005-09-19

Since Bernstein 's departure from America to Europe in the early Seventies, his personal vision experienced a major scope and his wisdom became bigger. His well known hyper romanticism so typical of the Sixties away.

With Tchaikovsky ' s Fifth it is extremely not fall in a contemplative rapture. The own structure of the work ldo not seem to offer too many performing ` s liberties.
In the First movement, Bernstein 's approach is characterized by an exquisite phrasing, extremely slow to accent perhaps the bourgoise charm and the gentle atmosphere of the Belle Epoque, the Andante is transformed in Adagio, he sacrifices the Caucasian musculature and the rage explosions in search of the inner vision of the composer. It is a smart concept if you take in mind the last Three Symphonies are permeated by an introspective mood respect the First, Second and Third of visible Imperial character.

In the lovable Andante cantabile we notice an evident autumnal character pregnant of a melancholic serenity. The expressiveness in clarinets, oboes and fagots must be accented to obtain an unspotted result. These instruments are the window that allows us to loom to his disturbed soul. And the overall result is a true Mahlerian ethos, translated from the romantic Vienna to the enormous extensions with desolated steppes and endless gelid Siberian grounds. You are capable to make these risky and original innovations with a first rate Orchestra; the New York Philharmonic with its accustomed perfection, made it possible.

If you are a Tchaikovsky ' s purist, listen to your spirit and forget about it all the previous theories. Bernstein abandons all the literality you can imagine, he elaborates other canvas.

The Valse of the Third movement is performed filled on anticipatory premonition.
I do not find best comparison for this Andante maestoso and the twilight of King Lear, the horns do not announce better days, on the contrary seems to prelude a true Götterdammenung. The Allegro vivace is played with ambition but restrained emotion, gradually the contained histamine appears to express the jubilee and glee of a new dawn. This is very important because the Russian soul has always feed their dreams through the Scherzos and Dionysian rapture. The Presto is a doubtful triumph, a well dissimulated Fanfare to ignore the ineluctable destiny, expressed according the canons of the best Russian Orthodox tradition.

Romeo and Juliet 's Fantasy Overture inspired in the well homonymous drama of Shakespeare. Well phrased but extremely cerebral, it lacks the sense of urgency and fevered anguish that characterizes to Munch 's Boston Symphony.

Nevertheless, this album is a true historical document, at least for all the sincere admirers of that magnificent and talented conductor who had so much to say in despite of having left us at the age of 73: Leonard Bernstein. Wherever you are, maestro at your memory!.

5 out of 5 stars At the end..........2005-04-12

What makes this recording particular worthwile is the sixt symphony of Tchaikovsky. The 6th is-among other reasons-important as a human document.
The symphony was the last music he composed before he died. Tchaikowsky was never a very happy man. According to some he was homosexual ( inadmissible in the 19th century ), according to others he searched in vain for Platonic love. His music is not really happy or frolicsome either. Even The Nutcracker and Capriccio Italiano have an undertone of tragedy played by cello and contrabass.Only at the end of his compositions, there is always an outburst of energy and optimism.

Not so in his 6th and last symphony. At the end of the fourth mouvement-the Adagio Lamentoso-the music gradually becomes pianissimo (as if Tchaikowsky meant to say: this time I give up) until the music is only a faint whisper of grief. A few weeks later Tchaikowsky commits suicide.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Beats Lenny's Performance on Tchaikovsky!.......2001-08-18

I simply love this double-decker!!! Nothing beats Lenny's performance on Tchaikovsky! Bernstein's unique and expressive performance provides very profound emotion, so audible that you can almost feel it. Lenny's performance on Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony is DEFINITELY the best Tchaikovsky I ever heard, as well as his 5th Symphony and Romeo an Juliet! It's TRULY worth it for Tchaikovsky lovers, especially the 6th Symphony! You should listen to Lenny's performance on the music once!
