Album Description
The holidays and the ethereal sound of the harp are a natural match. These classical holiday songs come alive as Ms. Osborne interprets them in the Victorian style. Lush, elaborate arrangements float through the air to create a soft, angelic mood. Ms. Osbornes broad experience of classical harp studies, as a professional harpist and professor of harp music lends itself to the video footage included on this DualDisc. She presents a brief overview of harp basics peppered with insightful anecdotes and Victorian-era historical perspective
"Harp 101" in a sense.
Presented in stunning surround sound and crystal clear stereo, Victorian Christmas will set the mood for your festive holiday gatherings. The music feels right at home whether an audio-visual Christmas Card or a gift to yourself.

Album Description
An enchanting companion album to A Victorian Christmas... Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans officially outlawed all festivals, including the ancient Yuletide celebrations so beloved by the people. In rediscovering the ancient feast of Christmas, the Victorians searched throughout Europe to find old carols, transporting them across borders and language barriers. Here is a collection of well-known melodies from Provence: Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Isabella; Burgandy: Patapan; Germany: O, Tannenbaum; France: Wherefore This Great Joy (Angels We Have Heard on High)along with lesser-known gems from Poland, Alsace, Sicily, Finland, Holland, Austria, Catalonia, Denmark, Galicia and the Basque country.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful addition to the collection.......2007-01-04
I wanted a "classical" sounding dulcimer Christmas CD, and this was exactly what I was expecting. It is a welcome addition to my Christmas CD collection.
It fit my need........2006-03-17
I was looking for some Victorian Christmas music for a play. I found a piece I really liked on the CD and so I was very pleased.
The Sound Of Christmas.......2002-09-20
In most cases, a follow up CD (or movie, book, whatever) is rarely as good as its predecessor. This is not to be for Robin Petrie's remarkable second collection of Victorian Christmas music. It is every bit as good as her first collection, with a wonderful selection of known and not so well known Christmas carols. You'll recognize 'O Tannenbaum,' 'I Saw Three Ships,' and 'In Dulci Jubilo.' But you may not know 'Masters In This Hall,' 'Lovely Is The Dark Blue Sky,' or 'Fum Fum Fum,' all beautiful tunes played in Robin's exquisitely crafted traditional style. Ms. Petrie is, in my opinion, the finest hammered dulcimer instrumentalist, and if you've never heard her music, this CD (as well as her first - "A Victorian Christmas") will win you over. It just SOUNDS like Christmas! Soft lights or candles flickering, perhaps you just watched your favorite version of 'A Christmas Carol,' or you're just about to decorate your (hopefully real) tree. This is the music you want. Amazon gives you an opportunity to give a listen to 'A Victorian Noel.' Take 'em up on it but, be forewarned, have your credit card ready. You're gonna want this!
Victorian Joy.......2002-08-18
Robin Petrie has brought us two glorious Victorian Christmas albums, and _A Victorian Noel_ is the better of the two. The sweet sounds of these old-fashioned, instrumental carols is so reminiscent of times of antiquity. This is what real Christmas music sounds like. Download the MP3 of _Infant Holy/I Saw Three Ships/The Builders_ off the Amazon site, and listen to it in its entirety.
Then go ahead and order both Petrie CDs.
One of the best Christmas CDs ever.......2002-01-24
Whether you listen to it carefully or let it play barely-noticed in the background, this CD is one of the best of Christmas Carols I've ever heard.
Robin Petrie has amazing command of the hammered dulcimer or "piano harp" as her Victorian model was called.
The arrangements are quite nice, the occasional strings fit in just right and even the piano doesn't sound bad (and I don't like the sound of that instrument)
If you like traditional music, or even just prefer Mannheim Steamroller to the latest pop artists attempt at a "Christmas Album" you will love this CD.

Customer Reviews:
Please hear me out.......2006-12-20
Sorry to be the dissenting opinion here, but I must respectfully disagree with the gentleman who feels that this is the best Revels project. Perhaps it is, if you particularly enjoy Victorian music, but as a lover of the Medieval Revels style - and their other albums - I found this to be too great a change of pace. But that isn't why I'm giving this only 3 stars (mayhaps a bit harsh...3.5 if I could). There are some wonderful songs on the album, e.g. Past 3 O'Clock, In Dulci Jubilo, Malpas Wassail...very nice...and this Revels album isn't full of poems you just can't bring yourself to care about like some of the others...that's a plus. But a few of the songs - and specifically those sung by the very annoying voice of Maggie Peirce - sounded like horribly cheesy show tunes. Not exactly the music I'd like to listen to over a Christmas feast. And - I really am sorry if this comes across too harshly - the Children's Waits choir is very grating, like fingernails on a chalkboard, sounding like a rough-and-tumble bunch of kids in a school cafeteria. Maybe that's the effect that Revels wanted...don't get me wrong, I enjoy hearing kids sing at church and as carolers, etc, but I don't like coughing up my hard-earned dough to hear great songs made awful by kids that don't sound good. Anyway I would highly encourage those not familiar with this genre to do their homework on this one before buying it. Cheat a bit and listen to the sample tracks. I didn't do my homework and thus didn't really get what I expected - my mistake, but an understandable one considering how high Revels set the bar with their other projects.
The Best Revels Ever!.......2005-12-21
I've heard lots of Revels recordings - this is the best of them all. Good musicians, fun music - the brass group is perfect. And - Don't Have Any More, Mrs. Moore! If you can listen to that and not smile, you're dead. Or you might as well be!
No Bah Humbug!.......2002-08-24
This is Victorian music at its finest. If you want to explore some magnificent old carols and gorgeous vocal arrangements, then buy this. If you want to be transported back to the time and place of Charles Dickens, then buy this. If you want to hear Let It Snow! Let It Snow! and Frosty the Snowman, then don't buy this. The Revels have five quality Christmas CDs, and this is the best one.
Another must have Revels Christmas CD.......2000-12-12
My favorite piece on this CD is not a song, but actually the 'sounds' of London (or any English town) of the 19th century-the first track called, "Street Cries." As for the rest of the disc, the best tracks fit in perfect with the rest of my 'Victorian Era Music' (see my other reviews), and they include "Past 3:00," "O Little Town Of Bethlehem," "Gooding/Wessel Cup Carol," and a great, somewhat eclectic (but truly authentic)version of "The 12 Days Of Christmas." And, my second favorite on this CD, "Shepherds Arise." A couple songs are, to me, duds for being supposed Christmas songs like "Down At The Old Bull And Bush," and "Polly Perkins of Paddington Green" (although they would be very good as non holiday music of the period). But the rest of the music (and there is alot) truly makes up for these. And, as with other Revels CD's, there is an excellent booklet included explaining the history of the music therein. I really love the Revels music. I have most of their CD's, including the complete Christmas collection. Search out these other Christmas CD's as well, even if they arrive after the holidays, as they are a wonderful collection to own. If you've liked my other recommendations, you'll like this one as well. Merry Christmas.

Album Description
Christmas had been a much neglected holiday until the Victorians revived its beloved traditions - trimming the tree, hanging the mistletoe, decking the hall...and celebrating it all in songs called carols. A Victorian Christmas offers a delightful assortment of the popular carols of the time, from those still well-known today, including The First Noel, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Greensleeves, The Holly and the Ivy and The Wassail Song; to a treasure trove of lesser known gems including The Cherry Tree Carol, The Carnal and the Crane and My Dancing Day. Featuring the lyrical hammered dulcimer (or, as the Victorians called it, the "piano harp") of Robin Petrie in sparkling arrangements which also include different combinations of piano, strings, harp and guitar.
Customer Reviews:
Lives Up To It's Title.......2001-05-30
Robin Petrie, perhaps the finest hammered dulcimer player in the world, has put together the ultimate Victorian Christmas cd. From the selection of carols to the traditional style in which they are played, this is a 'museum piece,' that is, worthy of historical value. When people today or in the future want to here Christmas past, this (and it's sister cd - "Noel") is the music they will reach for. This is NOT 'New Age' music, this is TRADITIONAL Christmas music, second to none. A great collection of known and not so well known carols to be played in a candle lit room with a sprig of holly over the door. Why am I writing this when I should be thinking of Summer (it is May as I write this)? Well, that's how great this cd is - It's on my mind even during the warm months. Yes, I wait until at least November before I play it, but it's on my mind none-the-less....
Wonderful!.......1999-12-14
This CD is charmingly beautiful. It is quiet enough to play during Christmas dinner, or a quiet evening gazing at the Christmas tree. I also like to listen to it while decorating or baking. It creates a wonderful Christmas mood in my home. The music is quiet and elegant, yet festive.
A holiday neccesity!.......1999-09-21
It doesn't seem like the holiday season if I don't have a cup of cocoa, a cozy fire and these magnificent carols playing in the background. Truly a work of art!

The Best Ever.......2002-12-21
This too is my favorite Christmas album. It strikes a perfect balance between the sometimes saccharine and bombastic choral style of the usual choir recordings, and avoids the synthesized, modern interpretations that sound anachronistic to my ears. This is the only bearable version of Jingle Bells I have ever heard. I can not recommend this highly enough.
Absolutely Unbelievable.......1999-11-16
This cd is by far the best christmas cd in my collection of over 20. The Coventry Carol is the most stirring, moving accounts of the song that i have heard in my life, and is still my favorite carol, after i have heard it easily over 500 times. The rendition of Jingle Bells in incredible. This cd is a MUST OWN for any serious Christmas music fan.
Delightful new (old) Christmas choir music.......1998-12-23
This is my very favorite Christmas carol CD! DeCormier and Pierpont have arranged the familiar and not so carols in a bright fresh wrapper. The voices feature tight (and unusual) harmonies and the instrumentation features bells and drums of the Victorian period. Give this one a listen.
