5 out of 5 stars Music for the masses.......2005-09-25

This disc is a bit different from many of the Cambridge Singers' discs in that it is exclusively secular songs. They have retained one of their favourite recording spaces, the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral, a structure well atuned to a capella singing (it has a natural nine second delay in the cathedral). This recording was John Rutter's first album on American Gramaphone Records.

--Music--
Madrigals are songs that have various purposes. They can be for private or public entertainment; they can be together with dramatic performances or played on their own. Petrarch is the inspiration of many madrigal texts, and folk songs also feature significantly. The English Madrigal School took full bloom during the golden age of Elizabeth; by the middle of the seventeenth century, the era of composition of the madrigal was essentially over. However, they have remained a popular pieces for performance, and many modern composers have arranged them, including on this disc Holst, Vaughan Williams and the Cambridge Singers director, Rutter.

Madrigals are often upbeat, happy, sometimes poignant, and lively. Some madrigals incorporate humour and jokes. There are exceptions to all of these, to be sure, including among the songs on this disc. Perhaps the best known madrigal in modern times, Greensleeves, is presented as the last piece on this disc, here in an arrangement by Vaughan Williams. There are lively emotions and sombre tones here, all sung with grace and consistent quality.

--Liner Notes--
Unlike many of the Cambridge Singers' CDs' liner notes, this one has a biographical sketch of John Rutter, a description of the setting at Ely Cathedral, a listing of the singers, and an essay about madigrals. Also unlike other CDs of theirs, this one does not include the words to the songs, a missing piece that would be helpful for many of the songs.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

This is a fun and fabulous recording.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful but perhaps overly solemn for some selections.......2002-10-19

The splendor of these arrangements and the setting confer on all of these traditional madrigals (and some newer arrangements: Side B is dominated by twentieth century arrangements) a certain solemnity and a certain stately pace (so the lyrics are not lost in the echo of the cathedral).

This leaves a strange effect on some selections, such as "Now Is The Month of Maying," which is about, um, springtime urges and here sounds oddly like a mass.

5 out of 5 stars A tasteful and beautiful collection.......2001-08-21

This disc furthers my belief that madrigals are the best forum for a capella voice. Each song is unique and beautiful, and the sequencing allows a very smooth flow. Better-known works such as "Month of Maying" or "April is in my Mistress' Face" are perhaps most representative of the style, but included here are many lesser-known gems that you're sure to enjoy. The Cambridge Singers use their obviously well-honed skills to great results, from the more frivolous tracks to the darker, more solemn ones. Very highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Stravinsky the Composer, not Stravinsky the Conductor.......2006-09-18

It is a pretty good collection, lots of music from Stravinsky's entire carreer, but one must keep in mind that Stravinsky was a brilliant composer, and not a commanding maestro. You will not necessarily be getting the best recordings of these works. For example, something like the Boulez/Cleveland Rite of Spring is far superior to those in this collection. He is a vastly better conductor, and is much more capable of making the orchestra perform Stravinsky's intentions than Stravinsky is. All in all, however, I am more than glad I own this set.

5 out of 5 stars Staggering! All the Stravinsky I'll ever need!.......2006-05-20

While I had heard some Stravinsky compositions prior to my purchase, this was the first (and only) Stravinsky material I have ever owned. As a young music enthusiast, the draw to me was to hear these pieces as Stravinsky conducted them and to get so many of them at such a great price, not to have the original jackets for the purpose of reminiscing. So, as someone who needed a good jump start into the works of Stravinsky (by Stravinsky), this set has proven totally invaluable. And while more information could have been packed onto these cds, I do appreciate how closely these discs have stuck to the original releases. I don't know about the portion of Petroushka which some reviewers claim is missing (as I don't know any other version), but I was totally blown away at hearing this version of Petroushka anyhow. In all, for whatever faults some sticklers may find here or there with this set, the value of this material collected in such a way (and at such a price) by far outweighs any possible faults.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2006-03-02

A great collection. There is simply no substitute for hearing Stravinsky as the great composer wanted to have his music played. Here is so much and also so varied a collection. I have been enjoying this set a great deal. One of the 20th century's greatest composers conducting his own compositions.

3 out of 5 stars Where's my Petrushka?.......2003-08-01

The main reason I bought this box is because I was introduced to Stravinsky's Petrushka in the spring of 2003, and I loved it.
Along with Rite of Spring I think it's the most brilliant music Mr. Stravinsky ever wrote...so, I've been listening to the 34-minute long 1960 CSO recording of it at least once a day since I first heard it, naturally sort of memorizing it, but it didn't fit when I made this CD spin. The recording of Petrushka in this box is the VERY SAME RECORDING (1960) that I'd listened to, but it's cut to a suite! It's only 24 minutes long. You can tell it's obviously cut at certain points if you're familiar with the uncut version. 10 WHOLE MINUTES ARE MISSING FROM "PETRUSHKA!" I was (and still am) very disappointed by this.
Familiarizing myself with the rest of the discs was very fulfilling, though; I love the Ebony Concerto with the Columbia Jazz Combo featuring Benny Goodman...but the "suite-cut" of Petrushka made me paranoid...I can't be sure if anything else is edited or not...
There are 75 pages of notes in the booklet about the recordings but only 1/3 is in English.
The special multimedia feature disc is nothing much. With awful graphics it features the same notes as in the booklet, and there are lyrics for those who want to use the box for karaoke.
These 400 minutes of music (an average of 45 minutes per disc) could fit on only 5 CD's instead of 9, but it seems that this collection is made for nostaligs who will love watching and touching these tiny LP-jackets - after all, it is called the "Original Jacket Collection."
Incidentally, all of Stravinsky's recorded work which he conducted himself is not in this box. It is not at all complete; aside from the missing part of "Petrushka," his own reading of "Symphony in Three Movements" is missing (but available on CBS.)
Hats off to the man himself anyway. The music is brilliant, and considering that these recordings are 40+ years old, the sound quality is very good. Excellent stereophony on Rite of Spring!
It's a good thing that his music is still available and that people are offering refurbished products thereof. But if you love Petrushka like I do...buy the real thing...this just might disappoint you...
The 3 stars is a compromise of the music and the package; (5 stars for the music & its quality - 1 star for the package, choice of discs and--considering the price--somewhat weak linear notes.)

5 out of 5 stars legendary.......2002-06-30

This 9 cd set is an historical one...more than half of Stravinsky's works are collected in this set. i clearly can say that there isn't any better recording for Stravinsky's works. especcialy first released USA's national anthem and a 12 tone work "Fanfare for two Trumpets" are remarkable.and we can also mention that some noises during the recording procces (i.e: Stravinsky's turning the page of the partition) gives a different taste to the listener. This is a real golden box of music.

James Woods and the New London Chamber Chorus and Chamber Ensemble provide a performance of Stravinsky's Les Noces--considered by many to be the composer's finest work--that is careful and well balanced, even if it never reaches the Apollonian sublimity of Bardon Eötvös's recording. And it's wonderful to hear engaging renditions of lesser-known vocal music by the composer, including the Four Russian Peasant Songs and several Slavonic works. Stravinsky's arrangements of music by the infamous Renaissance composer Gesualdo and a modernist homage to T.S. Eliot round out this record. --Joshua Cody

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb Stravinsky Selections, excellently performed........2006-06-01

'Les Noces and other choral music' is centered around Igor Stravinsky's scoring of five Russian folk pieces done for weddings (the translation of 'Les Noces'). The selection is interesting for so many reasons, not the least of which is the similarity of this material to the great 'The Rites of Spring' as well as a really superior realization of the great Russian tradition in choral performances.

I have heard Stravinsky's 'Tres Sacrae Cantiones' done on other recordings and these are much better, and they fit in well with the other material on the disk.

This disk easily passes the single most important test of a CD. Not only do I enjoy listening to it at least once a year, I really look forward to it, much as I look forward to 'Rubber Soul' as I work my way through Beatles' recordings.

A truly superior recording and selection of choral material.

5 out of 5 stars Stravinsky Gems.......2001-07-20

This disc is worth owning and listening to many times. I love Les Noces, but I remember how odd it sounded to me when I first heard it a couple of decades back. The first tracks on this disk are five Russian wedding songs. These provide a WONDERFUL education and context for Les Noces. Even if you are familiar with the piece, these are worth hearing for context.

The other pieces are also not commonly had outside the big collections of Stravinsky works. They are worth hearing and knowing.

These are very good performances done in interesting ways.

5 out of 5 stars A Stravinskian treasure trove.......2000-09-24

This disc is one of two released by Hyperion in exploration of Stravinsky's choral music. It contains many gems, familiar and otherwise, and makes for a tremendously valuable addition to any collection.

An excellent ploy is the use of two experienced choirs for the recording: the New London Chamber Choir and the Voronezh District Chamber Choir, with James Wood and Oleg Shepel as respective conductors. Whilst some may find the latter choir a slightly odd-sounding group, their presence adds a wonderfully authentic flavour to the music, most of which dates from Stravinsky's early period - commonly described as his 'Russian' period. Indeed, they open the disc with Four Bridal Songs from the Voronezh District itself, complete with tambourines and dancing (although of course only the tambourines are evident in the recording). These are a superb appetiser for what follows.

The title work "Les Noces," also known as "Svadebka" or even just simply "The Wedding," is without a doubt one of Stravinsky's most celebrated works. As with the Russian Songs, it is a pity that in listening to it we cannot also enjoy the accompanying choreography, although Stravinsky called for a large array of percussion instruments in the score and these add an almost aural choreography to the work. The two featured choirs join forces for this together with four outstanding soloists (including John Potter) and four deft pianists, resulting in a colourful, gripping and explosive performance.

Stravinsky's "Four Russian Peasant Songs" for women's choir deserve to be better known, and here we get the opportunity to listen to both versions: one for unaccompanied voices, the other for voices and four horns. These show as well as anything that part of Stravinsky's mastery lay in his ability to evoke a chosen style whilst remaining completely true to his own: if you can programme your CD player to play these and the opening traditional songs in sequence, you will see for yourself just how successfully this music works.

Westminster Cathedral Choir have recorded Stravinsky's "Three Sacred Choruses" in Latin for Hyperion; on this disc you can hear the original Slavonic versions. They are entrusted to the Voronezh Choir under Oleg Shepel, and he does some rather surprising things to the music (for instance, it is sung at more flexible speeds and with a curious degree of vibrato and 'swoopy' phrasing than on other recordings I have heard). Still, it is good to have them in sequence, presented as Stravinsky might have heard them upon returning to his homeland after nearly a whole lifetime in exile. The New London Chamber Choir follows these with three sacred pieces of a different kind: these began life as unfinished motets by Carlo Gesualdo. Stravinsky was fascinated by them and elected to finish them, but in the process his own musical thumbprints were placed on the music and what we thus hear is a curiously compelling mixture of flavourful Italian polyphony and twentieth century idioms. It is not hard to imagine these being sung in worship.

The programme closes with two fruits of Stravinsky's final years - his serial period. "The Dove Descending" is an eerily beautiful setting of a well-known poem by T. S. Eliot (another figure greatly admired by the composer) and provides further demonstration that Stravinsky could still sound like himself whilst under the influence of Schoenberg's twelve-tone discipline. The "Introit in memory of T. S. Eliot" which closes the disc is a more obviously serial work, setting the opening text of the Requiem Mass for male voices and a small ensemble (viola, double bass, piano, harp and percussion). This is Stravinsky at his grittiest, yet the music - right down to the timbre of the instruments combined - expresses the mood of the text in a wonderfully sublime manner.

This disc is a worthwhile investment, whether you are a Stravinsky addict, a Stravinsky student or just plain curious. It presents an amazingly varied range of works, each one a gem in its own way, performed to a very high standard. Colourful, exciting, well-made: I recommend it.

Sixteenth-century Gesualdo and 20th-century Stravinsky? What are they doing together on the same disc? Each composer's "uncompromising modernism" and position at the "forefront of the avant-garde" bring the two into a kind of cross-generational alignment. But the truth is that Stravinsky found something personally appealing both in Gesualdo's staunch individualism and in the unique sound of his music, which owed much to its startling harmonies and unorthodox chromatic effects. Stravinsky championed Gesualdo's music, expressing concern that this "academically unrespectable composer" and his work needed to be saved from musicologists. The Choir of Trinity College offers an amazingly effective musical and historical juxtaposition, allowing us to hear an uncanny connection between two religious works physically separated by 300 years, but seeming to have emerged from a common spiritual source --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Bridge between old and new devotional music........2006-05-31

This 1948 'Mass' by Igor Stravinsky and the 1611 Responsoria - Sabbato Sancto' by nobleman Italian composer, Carlo Gesualdo seems, on the face of it, a very odd juxtaposition by the producers of the label, Conifer Classics. It turns out that the modern Stravinsky, especially while he was in his 'classical' period, had a great affection for this Renassiance 'outsider' whose music was not given the appreciation it deserved in his own time.

For my part, I am reminded of how surprisingly uniform sacred choral music can be over the years. While Stravinsky's voices have a strong similarity to some modern choral classics by, for example Gyorgi Ligeti (See '2001' sound track), they are also strongly similar to voices performing music over 400 years old.

Another interesting aspect of Stravinsky's pieces is the inclusion of instruments to accompany the parts of the mass, in spite of the fact that Stravinsky was a practicing Russian Orthodox Christian, those who forbade instruments from liturgical music.

A very interesting little corner of musical history.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and spiritually lifting choral music.......2002-10-11

Kudos to Reinbert de Leeuw, the Netherlands Chamber Choir and the Schoenberg Ensemble. I've never heard a more moving rendition of the Mass -- the singing is on a par with the finest cathedral and motet choirs anywhere. I loved the lesser known pieces as well, especially the three Sacrae Cantiones (after Gesualdo). The counterpoint is intricately-woven and mesmerizing in its worshipful effect. Always one of my favorite Stravinsky pieces, I've yet to find the "perfect" recording of the Cantata. Here de Leeuw coaxes sumptuous performances out of the instrumentalists and choir, as well as soprano soloist Rosemary Hardy. Only tenor Ian Bostridge disappoints, surprisingly, sounding a bit wearied, and always a few "cents" flat, keeping the Cantata's centerpiece (the lengthy 2nd Ricercar) from reaching its imperative climax. A minor criticism, however, given the overall beauty of the performances. Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2002-04-22

Never thought Stravinsky could be delicate, soft or even gentle? Then listen to this album. The Mass is absolutely spectacular! It is a perfect mix of reverence, ancient chant-like vocals and modern sonorities. Stravinsky's Gloria is among the finest and most touching ever penned. The voices are in pitch perfect Vaughan Williams folksong-esque harmonies. Their layers of sound are poignantly accented by delicate, weaving wind instruments throughout as only Stravinsky could do. His Pater Noster aches with beauty. The Credo and Ave Maria are likewise excellent. The Introitus sounds particularly heart-broken, defeated and cathartic - a fitting tribute to the loss of a friend. The sound quality will surprise you with its clarity and depth. If you like choral works, especially sacred ones - and are even remotely interested in Stravinsky, then do not pass up this disc. These pieces should be played and heard far more often.

There are several wonderful works on this seventh installment of the Music Masters series of historic Stravinsky recordings. Probably the most famous is Stravinsky's jazz take on the Faust legend, The Soldier's Tale. There are other delights as well: his arrangement of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem, for solo violin; his serene Mass setting; the childlike Cat's Lullabies; and Monument, a homage to the notorious Italian Renaissance composer Gesualdo. Robert Craft conducts the Orchestra of St. Luke's in consistently intelligent and engaging performances. --Joshua Cody
