Latin plums.......2000-11-04

This album took me by surprise. I was after a cross section of more unusual latin orchestral music, in particular the under-recorded Arturo Marquez; the composer of the amazingly melodic and slinky Danzon No 2. What I got was a very well planned and thought out album that refused to get off my cd player! It was not just a question of it being easy listening, this was unsual and immediate. The two better known slices of Southamericana are Bernstein's Mambo from Westside Story and Ginastera's Estancia suite. Both very well played and given plenty of drive by Fernando Lozano. The latter leads into Marquez' Landscapes which is so like the Danzons (he wrote 5) but with a richer sound and more varied rythms. You then get two orchestral arrangements which richly deserve to be widely heard: Romeu's brightly orchestration of six short and spicy latin piano pieces by Farinas and a well known song by Cupido given a very subtle upgrade to symphonic status by Aldana (who can be found in his own right on 20th Century Mexican Symphonic Music Vol.1).This is then rounded off by a latin rhapsody By Enriquez, which strays very close to the Light Music idiom, but is good fun and your Dad will probably recognise the parade of tunes.The orchestra is excellent throughout and nicely recorded with a good body to the sound. You really feel that these players have this music in their blood, which for me can be no higher commendation.
