5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2007-06-06

A collection of masters that insist that you relax as you listen. An exquisit addition to any music cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars What a value!.......2005-07-26

A wonderful collection of music spanning from the Baroque to the Modern and so Affordable. Each CD is in a full size jewel-case with beautiful cover art - paintings of Renaissance-era angels in muted, slightly reflective, metal-tone inks - all within a box that ties them all together. There are no liner notes in the booklet, just track listings, but the music speaks for itself. It's not completely apparent from the track listing who the composers are, so here's the breakdown: Disc 1 - Vivaldi's "Four Seasons"; Disc 2 - Vivaldi flute concertos; Disc 3 and 4 - Bach Brandonburg concertos; Disc 5 - Bach violin concertos; Disc 6 - Handel concerto grossi; Disc 7 - Handel organ concertos; Disc 8 - Flute concertos by Quantz, Heinchen, Buffardin, Adolph-Hasse; Disc 9 - Mozartt violin concertos; Disc 10 - Mozart horn concertos; Disc 11 - Mozart piano concertos; Disc 12 - Haydn cello concertos; Disc 13 - Haydn violin concertos; Disc 14 - Tchaikovsky violin concerto and piano concerto; Disc 15 - Paganini and Chausson violin concertos; Disc 16 - Bruch and Mendelssohn violin concertos; Disc 17 - Brahms concertos; Disc 18 - Dvorak and Hindesmith cello concertos; Disc 19 - Russian composers Prokofiev, Galzanov and Shoshakovich violin concertos; Disc 20 - Spanish guitar concertos of Rodrigo, Sor, Granados, Albeniz and de Falla.

2 out of 5 stars extremely overrated.......2004-08-01

For reasons that I do not understand, Wynton is considered a player of the highest caliber. While his technique would have to seem impressive to most of his fans, in comparison to players such as Phil Smith, Charlie Schleuter, Matthias Hofs, and many other top symphony players, Wynton is completely out of his league. Wynton's interpretations of some of these pieces are laughable in their complete lacking of any sense of direction. Compare his recordings of the Enesco and Hindemith with ones put out by Phil Smith and Charlie Schleuter, amd it is like listening to a student play a piece for his teacher, and then the teacher playing it the way it ought to go. The only valid reason to buy this recording is the great programming. It's just a shame that it is not another trumpet player playing the same pieces.

2 out of 5 stars Some nice moments, but..........2004-06-30

Wynton's playing on this album is, unquestionably, very accomplished and there are some really shining moments -- especially in the Halsey Stevens' Sonata and the Honegger.

As a classically trained trumpet player I must disagree with the other reviewers and point out a number of weaknesses in the playing in this disc. The Poulenc and the Bernstein, the easiest pieces are also the sloppiest. Througout the entire album, save the Chorale at the end of the Hindemith, Wynton uses, in my opinion, excessive and unmusical vibrato -- I feel it especially breaks the mood of the end of the Enesco.

The playing throughout doesn't do much musically interesting and there are better recordings of all the works here. I feel the Hindemith was just rushed through, first and last movements especially. See Charlie Schlueter's "Trumpet Works" on Kleos Classics for a much more musical Hindemith and Philip Smith's self-titled album on Cala Records for better renditions of the Enesco and Tomasi.

Overall, I really liked the program choice and some of the really good moments, but I think you won't find much here that isn't done better elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars excellent twentieth century repertoire.......2001-01-09

Another recording of Wynton's in which he displays desirable command over his trumpet. Although I wouldn't consider it perfection, he is truly a master of his instrument, and attaining perfection is no mean feat. He starts off with the Ravel, Piece en forme de Habanera, which is an exquisite work, originally written for solo piano, but Mr. Marsalis captures the expression and lyricism of Ravel's composition beatifully.

There is some very difficult music on this album, and Wynton makes it sound natural. The Honegger Intrada is definitely within this category. Mr. Marsalis made it sound so easy that I didn't realize the endurance it takes to play the opening lines until I looked at the music myself. Henri Tomasi is better known to trumpet players for his spectacular trumpet concerto, and he is represented in this list of works with his short and fun Tryptique. The Halsey-Stevens Sonata has become one of my favorite pieces of music with its wonderful thematic material, strong melodies and interesting rhythms. Marsalis is so good that he gets right out of the way and lets the strength of the composition shine, a task well done. Wynton displays strong performances of the Bozza and the Enesco as well, using the Bernstein and the Poulenc as short, fun pieces to provide comic relief from the heavier works found on this disc.

He ends it off with the famous Hindemith Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, a spectacular composition, which Mr. Marsalis plays with command. Wynton displays the intensity involved in this piece more than adequately. Although I somewhat disagree with some of his interpretation of the first movement, the second and third movements are wonderful. The album ends with the segment, Alle Menschen mussen sterben, or, "all men must die". An incredibly slow, incredibly difficult section to play, especially at the end of the entire piece. He pulls it off with control, not so much as even a waver in tone, and his is brilliant. Well done Mr. Marsalis! Aside from picky stylistic disagreements, an excellent collection, definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Job, Mr. Marsalis.......2000-05-30

Overall, this CD was excellent. Marsalis displays the art of contemporary music on a good note, playing such works as the Hindemith Sonata for trumpet. Also, from this cd, i learned of the Halsey Stevens Sonata for trumpet, now my favorite piece. Lastly, Wynton plays the Honneger Intrada, which had a section so fast i couldn't roll my toung and keep up...

5 out of 5 stars Good CD.......1999-09-07

I like Wynton's playing on this CD. The only thing I didn't like about the CD was Pièce en forme de Habañera, where Wynton plays both trumpet parts in synchronized recording, it sounds stupid. Otherwise this is a marvelous CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Essence of Gould.......2006-05-26

Glenn Gould has an uncanny ability of being able to delve from the whole to the particular. In a way this is disconcerting - in these sonatas we are struck not by the piece or the movement or the phrase but the individual notes that seem to be imbued with the essence of the music. Since Gould is regularly thought of as a minimalist (many recordings feature only one movement) I was interested in these multi-part, modern, longish works.

Again, those that cannot take the eccentricity and individual style should not be listening in the first place. It is again his subtle treatment of the music - all those inner melodies and inner rhythms, the unexpected highlights, the almost Bachlike clarity. These are not the easiest works to enjoy due to their chromatic nature, lack of soaring memorable themes and their - the closest word is purity. Repeated listenings, though, reveal to the listener new points as they becomes more familiar (like hearing a song until you know the words). This is an important addition to your GG collection.

3 out of 5 stars not quite up to Gouldian standards.......2005-05-28

I got this recording hoping for typical Gouldian gold, such as his recording of the Prokofiev 7th Sonata. However, much of this playing (particularly in the 1st and 2nd Sonatas) lacks focus. There is a lack of clearly delinated phrasing of ideas. The playing lacks direction, and does not have the white intensity of concentration that so much of his Bach has. But, for the die-hard collector, it's still worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting approach !.......2004-07-17

Glenn Gould was always an outsider in every work he played . This position has its risks . Sometimes , (mostly of them) it worked out .
In this particular case , we must to recognize first at all. that Hindemith piano music is built on wide cromatic lines hold by violent armonies and fierce counterpoints . And Gould handled this technique as the Gods . From here his succesful result.
In the third sonate , however I miss the nostalgic eloquence given for Paul Badura Skoda in an old vynil recording from the fifties. I think Mr. Gould lacks a certain level of expresiveness , seeking a striking effect .
However in the First Sonata , Gould plays with powerful conviction , giving a fresh reading and deeply idiomatism.
The Second Sonata, probably is the jewel of the crown . The staccatos are played with clearness . And the whole conception of this work is perfectly translated.
This is another example of the briliiant craft of this extraordinary artist.

4 out of 5 stars Taking Hindemith by the horns.......2002-11-22

Well, Mr. Gould certainly has strong opinions on how to play music. In these sonatas, he takes considerable liberties with the tempi, dynamics and meter that Hindemith clearly indicated in the score. Usually, Gould wins.

The First Sonata is splendid. Gould's very slow first movement is really eloquent. Through the rest of the piece, Gould seems to be trying to explain the music to us: staccatos to separate notes, slow arpeggios, long delays between movements to let us catch our breaths. The final movement, with impossibly crisp playing leading to the massive finale, is better than I imagined the piece to be.

I never liked the Second Sonata but Gould makes it pleasant.

The Third Sonata is sort of dull except for the final fugue. Gould was always a fan of counterpoint and this thing is a real jigsaw puzzle that Gould assembles while you listen. A real wow.

I used to play these sonatas when I could play piano, and this recording showed me a great deal that I had never imagined.

4 out of 5 stars good if you like hindemith and gould.......2002-03-01

Quite an impressive display by Gould. These sonatas are rather cold and abrasive on their own, and Gould's precise and nearly machine-like playing only exaggerate this. I'm not sure if this would constitue more or less authentic playing, but it would probably turn some people off.. (if you like romantic piano, this probably isn't the CD for you) On the other hand, there is something particularly exciting and intriguing about Gould's cerebral style, and it is at top form on these recordings.

If you're interested in listening to Glenn Gould, you should definately start with his Bach recordings, particularly Goldberg Variations. Of course, if you're looking at this, you most likely are very familiar with that recording (and the later one made towards the end of his life..)

A must-have for Gould fanatics. Hindemithians may want to look elsewhere for their piano sonatas.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2005-09-08

I am typically not a fan of Jean Pierre's flute playing (I find his tone to be thin and his technical passages to be a bit sloppy). With that said I was very surprised to actually like this CD. This collection is full of great pieces. Like everyone else reviewing I love the Katchaturian Concerto and having played it myself, I can tell you that it is one tough piece. I also adore the last movement of the Ibert concerto. The sonatas in this collection are also great and very well known pieces. This CD collection is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars The Best 20th Master pieces.......2004-04-03

Your attention is drawn to the fact that in one CD we have concertos and on the other one are sonatas, totalling 2 hrs 10 minutes.

the two French orchestras are superb and the recording is very nice too. Somehow, the recording of the piano part of the sonatas is not equally nice and the pianist is not quite as impressing as the flutist. Furthermore, its up to the audience to judge whether Rampal had slightest past his very prime when he recorded these two records albeit that technically there isn't any sign of obvious aging.

I'm no flutist but my attention is not just attracted by the Khatchatourian concerto: they are more jems than you could possibly imagine. In case you want to have the fullest reportoire of modern composers played by the greatest artist, you definitely shouldn't miss them.

    5 out of 5 stars Super Collection of 20th C. Flute Reportoire.......2003-01-09

Here is the collection of 20th century flute reportoire, played by master Rampal.

Ibert, Jolivert, Poulenc, are all here in two disc set with Rampal accompanied by Robert Veyron-Lacroix on piano.

Recording is clear and play is spectacular. Flute lovers will definitely want this in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for the serious Flutist or 20th Century collectr.......2001-03-10

As a flutist I say that this CD is a must have for any aspiring flutist. It contains THE piece de resistance of the flute repertoire and the performance is simply legendary. Most of these pieces were dedicated to or commissioned by Rampal himself.

For the average collector, you will just adore the Khatchaturian concerto. See why the first movement is so compelling that all over the world audiences could not stop clapping even just after the first movement.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-24

This is a great CD for any trombonist's collection...As was mentioned before, the Blue Bells, Czardas and Hindemith are all first rate. The largest contribution to the very small collection of quality trombone recordings out there, however, is the much overlooked and extremely beautiful Sulek Sonata. The artist does such a first rate job presenting such a wonderful piece of music, it's worth the entire cost of the CD in one track.

5 out of 5 stars wow this is amazing.......2006-03-09

I am quite impressed by this recording. Christian Lindberg gives a flawless performance of Flight of the Bumblebee, Bluebells of Scotland, and the Hindemith Sonate. This should be in every trombonist's CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars CD shows many possibles for pros and student alike.......2000-06-27

This CD shows Christians virtuosity yet it also proves that the trombone is capable of more than slow ballads. Ive studied with Christian and I can tell you though this CD seems to be as hard as it comes there are better of his CDs. This is probably his 2nd best though. He is a master of trombone and this CD allows students and professionals to 1>Hear a real trombone sound 2>Dicover new peices 2>and also show the trombones possivilities. THIS IS A GREAT CD TO LISTEN TO AND PERFORM ALONG SIDE IN PRACTICE!

3 out of 5 stars great player, selection of music a bit disappointing.......2000-02-03

I hated to rate this a 3 stars, because the trombone playing is awesome! However, the selection of music leaves much to be desired, in my opinion. However, 2 of the selections, Flight of the Bumblebee (did he really play the trombone that fast? ), and Blue Bells of Scotland (magnificent!), are so tremendous that any trombone player should buy this CD just for those 2 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars This is a ravishingly diverse album, proving CL's Greatness!.......1999-11-16

What I love most of this album is the great diversity of styles created by the different composers of this album. My favorite songs are
    1) Blue Bells
    2) Csardas
    3) Liesbald (or however you spell it)

Anyway, I'm playing Blue Bells of Scotland this year for my UIL solo and ensemble competition next spring, and I have found it to be immensely helpful in determining styles, etc. Of course, it is also discouraging knowing somebody could be so much better than me :) Christian Lindberg is truly a fabulous artist!

5 out of 5 stars A standard for any oboe player.......2001-10-14

John Mack is definitely one of the pillars of the oboe playing world. His playing and teaching alike draw much praise. This CD is no expception. During his career, Mack has put out many definitive and emulated performances, and this CD contains many of the pieces standard in the oboe repetoire. In fact, some of these pieces are rarely recorded and can only be found on this CD. The Schumann Romances are beautifully done with excellent tone and phrasing, the Saint-Saens is wonderful and Mack's interpretation has become the standard for this sonata, the Hindemith is playful and quirky, and the Poulenc is pretty and well executed(though I prefer the Leleux interpretation). The little French pieces are pretty and a nice addition, though not that exciting.

My one gripe is with the engineering which makes things sound a bit unbalanced and hollow at times. Nevertheless, the CD is very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Great playing, great listening.......2005-08-12

This set has wonderful qualities on quite a few levels.

What you have here are clear modern renditions of pieces by some of the best known composing names of the last century, recorded in modern sound by one of my personal favorite cellists around today. Haimovitz always brings a very clearheaded yet informed approach to his readings (Not to mention daring- I highly recommend his readings of the Bach Solo Cello Suites) but I think what impresses me most of all here is his musicality and sense of structure. A few of these works could quite easily be reduced to meaningless gibberish by a lesser musician, but Haimovitz sails through them with assurance and style. He seems to have very clear ideas about the way things should sound... but moreover, he sounds like he's having fun, and it comes across.

I would highly recommend this set even at regular price, but for 3 CDs at midprice, it can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Recording of Hindemith's Amazing 'Ludus Tonalis'.......2006-06-02

I'm a little surprised that there has been no review thus far of this classic recording by British composer/pianist John McCabe of Paul Hindemith's piano masterpiece 'Ludus Tonalis' (1942). There have been other recordings of the work -- e.g, Sviatoslav Richter gave us a titanic account recorded live in rural France (complete with birdsong) albeit in inferior sound -- but this is the best I've heard. I didn't much like that by Olli Mustonen who gave it a rather more romantic sound than I would have preferred. And I have not heard the recording by Joyce Hatto, the British pianist in her late 70s who, on her private label, has recorded enormous amounts of piano literature but who only recently burst upon the scene after having withdrawn from the public eye a couple of decades ago. I intend to rectify that omission as I've been impressed with what I've heard so far from Ms Hatto. Nonetheless, I was very impressed when this recording came out in the mid-1990s and remain so. McCabe, perhaps because he is also an accomplished composer, is an analytical player and to my mind that is precisely what is needed in this hour-long collection of fugues and interludes which Hindemith subtitles 'Studies in Counterpoint, Tonal Organization and Piano Playing.' The work certainly does emphasize those three musical qualities. It consists of twelve fugues arranged in keys (or rather tonal centers) whose succession derives from the natural overtone series. They are linked to each other by interludes that modulate from the key of the previous fugue to the key of the succeeding one. All this sounds very dry but in fact it isn't. There is great variation of mood, tempo and form in these pieces. It's not for nothing that Hindemith titled the work 'Ludus Tonalis' ('Musical Game'): there is wit, drama and clever ingenuity here.

On first hearing non-Hindemithians -- that is, listeners who are not familiar with Hindemith's musical language -- might be a bit puzzled or even bored by 'Ludus' but on repeated listening the oyster opens up to reveal a pearl of great beauty. McCabe reveals it without pandering or overemoting.

The CD is rounded out by the inclusion of Hindemith's very early 'Suite 1922,' whose sections are called 'March,' 'Shimmy,' 'Nachtstück,' 'Boston,' and 'Ragtime.' The excellent notes by Robert Matthew-Walker make the point that the older Hindemith was a little embarrassed by these trifles, but at the distance of eighty years they can be valued for what they are: a master's idiosyncratic and ingenious take on popular music of the time.

As usual, Hyperion's presentation is excellent, with a delightful cover (painted by Hindemith himself), marvelous notes, beautiful sound and, helpfully, caputs (the first few notes, in musical score) for the prelude and postlude of the 'Ludus' as well as each of the fugues and interludes. (As I typed that last word I just GOT the point of Hindemith's surely intentional pun -- interLUDES: 'between the games.')

    Definitely recommended.
