This special 40th Anniversary edition features two studio bonus tracks along with a 20-page booklet and a collector's poster.

Each album in the Herb Alpert Signature Series features meticulously remastered sound, deluxe packaging, detailed liner notes, and an intro by Herb Alpert containing personal recollections and anecdotes.

5 out of 5 stars PASS THE TEQUILA! AND LISTEN TO THE BRASS! ONE OF MY FAVORITES.......2007-07-12

I am repeating this story you are about to read as it gives an explanation of why I love this music so much! "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" has many of the songs on it used on the ride you are about to read about. It is one of my favorite Herb albums for that reason and I was mesmerized(as a kid)looking at that gorgeous cover! That being said....Please read on.....I have fond memories of the music of Herb Alpert! I was introduced to him at an early age as my parents were fans of his records. I didn't hear much of him again until I was coming of age in Wildwood N.J. at the age of 15 when I used to party under the boardwalk with my friends and our girlfriends underneath Hunt's Pier's "El Scrambler" ride. The ride played Herb Alpert tunes non stop! I guess you could say I became a "Man" underneath that pier with my first love listening to the Tijuana Brass. Later in life in my 30's I was taking a break from playing in a band in the local bars,I became a DJ and I would mix Herb Alpert in my mixes and buy shots of Tequila for my fans! To this day when I play these songs at parties we all look for the Tequila bottle! This is a one of a kind sound and if I were stranded on a desert island with only a few albums, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass would be included in that collection! This is one of his best albums. I no longer own the original records so, I can not say if the new cd's are true to the originals. They sound fantastic to my ear!

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Delights.......2007-05-14

It had been a long time since I heard this album on vinyl, but all the memories came flooding back. I had forgotten how well Herb and the guys actually played, and that each piece had its own hook! I recommend this CD as a piece of pop musical history, whose sound is every bit as fresh today as it was 40 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Whipped Cream: Not for the Lactose Intolerant........2007-04-29

1965's Whipped Cream & Other Delights transformed Dolores Erickson into the bonafide superstar of my adolescent whipped cream fantasies. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass didn't do so bad, either, spending an incredible 8 straight weeks at the top of the charts. The memorable cover might have accounted for a large percentage of sales, especially among my demographic, but the music didn't hurt.

This is a prime example of the 60's "concept" album, with all of the intrumentals named after food. Lollipops & Roses." "A Taste of Honey" and the Dating Game theme "Whipped Cream." Etc. Etc. It caught the Zietgeist and rode it like a wave. Boys in Elementary School were inspired to learn the trumpet. I, among them.

I think the first record I purchased was Herb Alpert & TJB, but it wasn't this album, it was a 45 single.

I later did get this album, and several others of theirs, and then my neighbor's mother borrowed it for a wild party, and it got scratched from all the crazy drunken dancing.

After decades of being staples at flea markets and yard sales across the continent, the LPs Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass made in the '60s have been reissued with their original verve undiminished and sounding remarkably fresh. Taking things one step further is a new set of remixes. Those putting their hands are the faders include John King of the Dust Brothers, Mocean Worker, and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Alpert himself was an active participant in this project, adding some new trumpet solos amidst the snaky grooves and incessant beats. Not only will those familiar with the originals be dazzled by their transformations, but anyone new to these erstwhile million sellers will fall right in with the rhythmic drive and melodic hooks. --David Greenberger

Album Description

The Lounge Classic Remixed!

Once upon a time, there was a guy with a horn, a girl in whipped cream and a bunch of songs that became American classics. Now, 40 years later, Herb Alpert is back, with new solos mixed in alongside even newer grooves by some of the most innovative artists around. There's even a brand-new girl on the cover.

Herb Alpert had a lasting influence on music and pop culture. The original Whipped Cream & Other Delights LP spent 8 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts and more than two years in the Top 40, and earned three GRAMMY® awards-the title track even took on a life of its own as the theme song for The Dating Game. Now, with Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped, some of the artists he's influenced have created a fun and modern tribute to his landmark album. Rewhipped, indeed.

The artists involved include Thievery Corporation, Medeski Martin & Wood, John King, Mocean Worker, DJ Foosh, Camara Kambon, Anthony Marinelli and Ozomatli.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but can't top the original.......2007-06-07

There are some interesting interpretations here of the songs from the classic "Whipped Cream and Other Delights", but none of them are as good or better than the originals. If you haven't heard the classic TJB albums in a while, listen to them again. They're truly timeless, no remixing necessary.

4 out of 5 stars So much more than mindless muzak--but maybe not so for Herb Alpert purists..........2007-06-01

Herb Alpert always enjoyed being on the cutting edge; and this album allows him to work with some of the more successful remixers in the industry. Together they create a new type of Herb Alpert album: one that is rich with the classic flavors of Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass but gets served up fused with more modern beats that almost resemble rap or a hip-hop flavor.

The opening track entitled "Whipped Cream" has a great bass beat and makes good use of the horns; it also has a lounge music flavor to it. "A Taste Of Honey" begins with a beautiful but somewhat melancholy introduction by the horns--but then the percussion comes in to spice it up. When the piano comes in this number is REALLY jamming! You also get a lot of electricity in the new rendition of "Green Peppers;" the electrical piano and bass by Anthony Marinelli fits in rather well.

Other good tracks on this CD include "Love Potion #9" which features Asdru Sierra performing the vocals to perfection; and "El Garbanzo" retains the most of the traditional Herb Alpert style. The horns are great for "El Garbanzo;" and both the percussion and the piano enhance the quality of this number.

"Bittersweet Samba" has a great Latin beat to it; and the last track "Butterball" has a psychedelic flavor superimposed upon the more traditional arrangement. The strength of this unexpected combination of styles makes for a strong ending for the CD!

Herb Alpert plays improvisational trumpet throughout the CD; and it's great to see him going strong as other reviewers note. Some other reviewers write that they heard a better track set than they expected; and I agree with them. I didn't expect this CD to have such a modern twist to it but it works well.

The liner notes give you the song credits and the art work is great!

Overall, fans who want to enjoy that classic Herb Alpert sound probably will be disappointed with this album. It's not immediately clear that this album contains only recently remixed tracks so please think about this before you decide to spend your money on this CD!

I highly recommend this for people who enjoy new twists on previously released music that offer creativity and freshness. Herb Alpert purists will enjoy this CD less, unfortunately. For that I have to take off one star to make this a four star review.

2 out of 5 stars New but definitely not better.......2007-05-26

Listening to this new CD, I thought it sounded much slower than the original. Was my memory off after a few decades? I later listened to the original LP and found it was this new CD, not my memory, that was off. The original has real pep. This CD seems about to enter siesta mode. The good news is that there are now many 4 in 1 players on the market that give listeners the opportunity to play the original LP and hear this great album, one of the classics of all time.

1 out of 5 stars SO LAME!.......2007-05-25

who's brilliant idea was this, anyway? remix herb alpert? gimmie a break. i can't see how herb's core audience of old-timers would appreciate this, and i also can't see how the "headz" would like this, either. herb should've just made a new record with a young & current producer. way too cheesy for everyone...

3 out of 5 stars The Bells! The Bells!.......2005-10-12

I give this album an average rating as it does what it sets out to do which is give the average listener of classical music various average samples of average performances of great classical compositions. Albums such as these are always a great way to explore various or specific classical music styles with pieces that are usually not too intrusive to the common ear. The only downside of these albums is that they unfortunately, more often than not, introduce a new listner to only the most elementary of performances and leave them believing that all others sound as the ones they just heard when such differences in most cases are huge ones. I chose to review this particular album after hearing the Sonnerie "Bells" de Ste Genevieve on this album (originally composed by the unfortunately obscure Marin Marais) as it is a perfect example of what I am trying to convey.

Although some but few classical chamber pieces can be played well by pretty much any average group, some pieces such as "The Bells" require a certain expertise in instrument and style that very few musicians can properly apply to bring out all of the desired qualities of the piece. The interpretation on this album is a perfect example. Marin Marais was a French Baroque composer who was one of several royal court composers for King Louis XIV in the 17th-18th centuries. He was a soloist prodigy in the viola da gamba which actually sound as if they're being played by cellos here instead. Aside from any change in instruments, they are played with such deficiency in terms of quality, interpretation, and execution, here that it is rather sad that this would be included in an album such as this one. The viola is an instrument with a lot of range as it has more strings and is larger than the cello and the notation is made for the range of such instruments. In particular, there are literally less than five musicians today who are anywhere near proficient with this type of music and those playing here aren't anywhere near the top contenders. All of these things take out an enormous aspect of the full potential of this piece in terms of how it is supposed to sound and performances such as the one here are literally mutilations instead of transcriptions or interpretations. Such performances in many ways cheat the curious listener who is exploring this music as to the music's real potential as intended by its genius source. I recommend to those who may have heard a sample of the 'Bells' here and liked it to then compare it to the performance of this piece by Jordi Savall and Le Concert Des Nations in the soundtrack for 'All The Mornings of the World" available on Amazon. You will hear what I mean and understand how there's simply no comparison. Jordi Savall is the undisputed master in performing on authentic violas that have completely different acoustics than their modern counterparts. Savall is also an established conductor of French Baroque music unlike those here who completely misinterpret the piece as a result. Buying classical music is not as simple as just buying a certain piece by any performer thinking it's great. Unless you really don't care too much and just want to use it as background muscac in your life, classical music requires fine tuning just like playing the instruments themselves as the musicians are in a sense the instruments of the composer and the conductor's interpretatation. Don't settle for second best because the catastrophic results such a choice entails is similar to the range on the Richter scale: the difference between a No. 1 and a No. 4 best performance is exponential as the difference with the 'Bells' version I have mentioned perfectly illustrates. There are differences between symphonic and chamber groups, conductors, soloists, instruments, specialities of technique, production, etc. All of these things fine tune the performance and make the difference between epic and atrocious.

In sum then, although this album is a great source of introductory material as to the range of classical styles and in some cases has reputed perfomers, it is certainly not a sample of the best performances around. These types of albums always require a closer look because you never know what you're gonna get anyway unless you know what you're looking for. Trusting record labels to find stuff for you is not always a good idea. More often than not, this is the place where mediocre professionals can make some form of living without having to wait for a major deal that's never gonna come. If you feel you like the style of music here once you've heard it, expand your horizons in terms of performances as many on this album and similar ones are often simply mediocre in one form or another and there's stuff that's so much better out there for your listening enjoyment of a particular composition and/or style. Hope this helps! Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT WORK MUSIC.......2004-09-17

Great work music, great travel music. Wonderful upbeat and get-you-going music for all things you do. Even NAXOS brand CDs don't come close to matching the preformances on this disc. Like the Masterpeice Theater theme song? Brandenburg Concerto by Bach is done PEFECTLY on this album. All songs are absolutely brilliant and masterfully done. This is a MUST HAVE CD no matter what kind of music you enjoy. Surely to inspire YOU!

4 out of 5 stars Quite a nice little compilation........2002-03-21

"The Bells of St. Genevieve" is a compilation of Baroque pieces that would serve as an excellent introduction for someone who would like to hear more of the Baroque style beyond "Spring" from "The Four Seasons" or "Canon" by Pachelbel. Granted, this cd does contain "Canon" (what Baroque compilation could resist including it), but it doesn't stop there.

I'm not an expert when it comes to Baroque music, but I am something beyond a beginner; I guess I'd consider myself a moderately knowledgable amateur. However, before purchasing this album, I had never heard the title piece, "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba," or track # 10 "Guitar Concerto" by Vivaldi. Some of the other tracks were familiar but not well-known to me. I was also pleased to see the inclusion of the turbulent Presto from "Summer" instead of the ubiquitous "Spring."

Compilations are often quite useful in helping neophytes get a better understanding and appreciation for classical music (I know they've helped me over the years). Not all compilations are a good mix or contain decent recordings; many seem like carbon copies of each other. This one, however, has good sound quality and great recordings from the likes of James Galway, Pinchas Zukerman, Canadian Brass, and James Levine.

I recommend this album to anyone wishing to branch out a bit in Baroque music but who is not sure where to start. I've discovered new favorites from listening to this album.

5 out of 5 stars Rock fan falls in love with Baroque's "greatest hits" album!.......2002-03-16

"Bells of St. Genevieve" (BSG) is the cd that got me, a rock fan, into classical music (technically Baroque and Classical are 2 different periods/styles, but we rock fans call it all "classical":-). This is a "best of" album of some of the greatest, and most famous Baroque music. BSG focuses on the last 50 years of Baroque period, which lasted roughly from 1600 to 1750. Most of the pieces come from the "big 3" of the late Baroque period: Vivaldi (3 of the 16 cuts), Bach (7), Handel (2). The tempo is mostly "allegro" (fast and cheerful), although Bach's Concerto for Violin is "largo" or very slow (the only slow piece on the cd). Still, this album has a very uplifting, energetic feel to it. I doubt it will put anyone to sleep, even if they grew up listening to Zeppelin & the Stones! Even the most classical-clueless rock fan will recognize many of these pieces: "Roundeau" by Mouret is the theme from BBC's "Masterpiece Theatre." Clarke's "Trumpet Voluntary" a.k.a. "The Prince of Denmark's March" is another "deja vous" song, often played in wedding processionals and I think was also BBC theme music. Likewise, Pachelbel's "Cannon" is a popular wedding march. In fact, this album contains many songs commonly played in wedding processionals, recessionals, and during dinner, so is good for anyone who needs quality classical recorded music for a wedding. Much of the music is played by chamber orchestras (small ensembles of up to about 9 instruments), so has more of an intimate feel than music played by large symphonies. I highly recommend this cd as an introduction to great Baroque music. However, once initated, I encourage folks to listen to these pieces in their entirety, such as Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and Bach's "Brandenburg Concertos" to get the full picture of how these great composers intended their music to sound, complete with key and tempo changes.

If you're looking to label this music as one sort or another--classical, jazz, bluegrass--you're bound to get into trouble. The two Quartets at work here--the Turtle Island String Quartet and the Ying Quartet--are innovators, blending absolutely classical training with a love of experimentation, improvisation, and an ear for unusual textures. The CD begins with a cool, swinging, true jazz classic ("Yearnin'") for the full octet and ends with a version of John Lennon's "Because" which captures the piece's melancholy in just the right manner. Along the way, an original work by the Turtle Island cellist, "Julie-O," discovers the darker and more virtuosic reaches of the pair of cellos. Darius Milhaud's "La Creation du Monde," a 1923 piece that explored the combination of European classical music and jazz, gets a new arrangement, and another original piece, "Variations on an Unoriginal Theme," pits one quartet against the other in a friendly competition that touches on R&B and Samba. This is a unique CD--entertaining and original. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars There's a giant in the room.......2006-03-03

This is a just a great album to listen to. Weird and wonderful music, executed with joy and precision. There's a lot of power in this music, but it's delivered with such frivolous confidence that you barely notice there's a giant in the room. And as an added bonus, the album is sonically extremely pleasing. This recording has fantastic presence and ambience. A definite buy.

5 out of 5 stars great for dinner parties .......2006-02-22

A great album - similar to the modern music composed by the Kronos Quartet, but more jazzy and upbeat. Every piece on this album is different and interesting- yet closer listening one can hear the themes that tie them all together. I've given this album to 5 people over the holidays - to both classical music lovers and those who never owned a string-quartet CD - and all have really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars A cross-over hit that refuses to compromise itself!.......2006-02-10

OK, I admit I bought this CD because they were nominated for a Grammy (which they just won). It has quickly become one of my favorite discs. It's amazing what these performers can do with their instruments. I really enjoy "Yearnin'," and although I'm always skeptical about Beatles arrangements, the lush harmonies of "Because" lend themselves well to a classical/jazz interpretation. Our family is a big fan of the Yings, and we hope to hear more from this wonderful quartet!

5 out of 5 stars a truly great recording.......2005-07-23

as a founding member of this group, I want to say that this current lineup (with 2 of the original members) is one of the most versatile and powerful lineups for this band ever. And this recording is in many ways the best ever, technically and musically. Anyone who is interested in the TISQ, or string music of any kind, should buy this CD immediately!

5 out of 5 stars Doo Wop, PROPER-ly done.......2006-12-31

British label PROPER records scores another huge hit with DOO-WOP DELIGHTS. The surprisingly compact album box contains a catalog, a 60 page liner notes/photos book, and four colorfully packaged CDs that hold a total of 100 great old vocal group recordings.

Each disc has a theme. CD #1 is called FROM RAGS TO RICHES. Disc #2 is TOO HOT TO HANDLE. Album #3 is entitled ROCKING & CRYING BLUES, and #4 is named CALL A DOCTOR. DOO-WOP DELIGHTS is about 5 hours of fabulous-sounding music for the price of one CD. How DOO they do it?

I thank you Stewart L.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of early Doo Wop........2005-06-07

This 4 CD box set by Proper is a fantastic collection of early (1950-1954) Doo Wop featuring the earlier R&B-tinged work of many classic groups such as the Flamingos, the Moonglows, the Platters, the Ravens, the 5 Royales and many others.
This set clearly illustrates R&B's evolution into Doo Wop.
The accompanying booklet is very well researched although not laid out in the order of the songs.
All the recordings are the original versions and the sound quality is first-rate.
The box sets by Proper continue to amaze me with their quality and low price.
A "must-have" for all Doo Wop fans.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Decca years.......2005-01-11

For most of her career, Peggy recorded for Capitol but there was a five-year spell during which Peggy recorded for Decca because Peggy had a major disagreement with Capitol (over the song Lover, which Capitol didn't want her to record) and switched labels in 1952 although she switched back in 1957. Thus, this compilation focuses on Peggy's recordings between 1952 and 1956.

Peggy's career on Decca began with Lover, originally written as a waltz but re-arranged a dramatic up-tempo song. Upon hearing it, composer Richard Rodgers expressed his displeasure at the arrangement. Nevertheless, it got Peggy's Decca career off to a great start, making the top three in the American charts.

Despite this start, Peggy's years on Decca were not very successful on the singles charts. Nevertheless, Peggy recorded a lot of great music during those years including the albums Black coffee, Pete Kelly's blues, Sea shells and Dream Street. The title track of her first Decca album (Black coffee, a melancholy ballad about loneliness) is now regarded as one of Peggy's most memorable recordings (hence its use as the title of this compilation) although it was never released as a single. It is yet another reminder that singles charts, however useful or interesting, do not tell the whole story.

You will surely recognize Love letters, which Peggy recorded several years before Ketty Lester made the song much popular in the sixties. Peggy's version of this 1940's song is more intimately romantic than most other versions I've heard Of course, it is just one of many classic covers that Peggy recorded for Decca and they are always among the best versions of those songs.

Peggy rarely recorded duets but you can find one here as Bing Crosby joins Peggy on Watermelon weather. Hearing this, one wonders why Peggy didn't record a lot more duets - this one is brilliant.

Apart from the songs already mentioned, this compilation contains many outstanding examples of Peggy's artistry. Many of the songs are ballads at which Peggy excels though there are several brilliant mid-tempo and up-tempo songs to prove Peggy's versatility.

At the time I bought this, it was easily the strongest collection of Peggy's material then available. It is now apparently out of print but new Peggy Lee compilations are released at regular intervals so most of these tracks (and some Decca tracks omitted from this collection, many of which are equally brilliant) are available elsewhere. Nevertheless, if you find a copy of this collection, it is well worth picking up. Apart from the great music, the booklet is also excellent.

      3 out of 5 stars Sleepy Beauty.......2001-04-17

Althought it would be sacrilege to loudly admit this (and no wonder some would find this opinion offensive),but Peggy Lee was more a product of her time than real overwhelming vocal talent. Her glamouros look and whisper of a voice was pleasant for eyes/ears enough to make her mega-succesful with mass audience who find her uninvolving purr easier to take than say,Billie Holiday who was clearly her inspiration but black woman and drug addict. For people who dont see further than her beauty and style,Peggy Lee is a godess, but if you are looking for something deeper, you won't find it here.I have several of her original albums and althought I had listen this compilation of her works for "Decca" for past 2 years,it always failed to excite me or even move me - so many novelty songs streched over 2 CD's that her jazz phrasing is simply burried under them.I see Peggy Lee clearly as a package of this CD: beautiful photos, excelent liner notes and then under all these wrapping there is just a small whispery voice that sounds too often as a lullaby. There were other female singers in the 1950's (June Christy,Anita O'Day,Kay Starr) whose voices clearly presented personality and whose records stand the test of time much better.Very popular then,Peggy does not move me - she make me sleepy and drowsy and a double CD compilation is somehow too much of pleasant humming.(Advice:check Kay Starr's "Capitol Collectors" compilation and hear how she lustfuly belts her version of "You Got To See Your Mama Every Night" - her black voice and dark beauty were completely opposite of Lee and her white-washed imitation of Billie Holiday)

      5 out of 5 stars Worth 10 Stars.......2000-04-25

Calling all Peggy Lee fans-your collection is incomplete without this 2-cd set! Peggy always had a knack for choosing(as well as occasionally writing)great material for her albums and this Decca collection is among her best works. The liner notes alone are worth the price, detailing Peggy's background as well as her musical career up to that point. Her golden good looks & sultry voice were among the best of the many female singers of the day and seeing her perform Live was always a treat. This anthology is a definite must-have and highly recommended.

      3 out of 5 stars Siloah - self-titled (Garden Of Delights).......2007-01-24

Originally released in 1970.Siloah was a short-lived German psychedelic-folk band that put out just two albums. This was their first, it's about as good as their as their second, 1972's 'Surkan Gurk' CD reissue(see my review). Should appeal to both fans of psych and folk. Siloah's style is strictly 'freeform'. Tracks I dug the most were the trippy "Krishna's Golden Dope Show", the acoustic bluesy folk ballad "Road To Larany" and the rocking "Acid Eagle". Just one more of those many worthy sub-underground long-lost bands that are currently made available by the folks at the Garden Of Delights label. Line-up: Thom-guitar& vocals, Wolfgang-bass, Tiny-vocals and Manuela-percussion. A nice pick.
