    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-04-26

Of course you knew about Twiggy and her world-famous stint as a fashion model... but did you know she is a legitimate stage star, seasoned in such musicals as "Me & my Girl" and "The Boyfriend"? Yes... Lesley Hornby, a/k/a Twiggy [Lawson] is a major icon with a talent of her own that is tangible in this CD.

Including music from all sort of revues from the West End, including a marvelous rendering of a little-known Porter song "The Physician" --which, if you listen closely to the words is... hilarious!- this record is the showcase of a great talent, and if you love musicals, this is definitely for you.

5 out of 5 stars Twiggy Really Sings! --Not Just a Pretty Face!.......2000-01-26

I have always liked Twiggy's voice, and the years have shown that she just gets better and better. She was not born a singer, she has worked at it, and it shows. Her renditions of "Dancing On the Ceiling","If Love Were All",and "Once You Lose Your Heart"are sheer magic.Twiggy has done country, rock, and other styles of music. This is but one fine example of a lovely lilting voice that will charm you with a wide range of songs that come from a wide range of London musicals. "On My Own" is superb.Twiggy has proven herself to be far more than a 60s icon. She is a fine actress and this album is proof that she is a very fine singer. Like show tunes? Then buy this CD, you will enjoy the wide array of fine songs by a very fine artist. She sings from her heart and that makes this album such a gem.

5 out of 5 stars not disappointing at all.......1999-03-07

This is very good. Most broadway CDs are not as good as this one and not as intreging. I'm new to the music world but this is one piece I love and think everybody who is interested in broadway music should own. It was a plesure to listen to this CD. Others I have listened to have not had good selections or a bigger variety. I am very proud to give this magnificent Cd 5 stars.

Deller is reposonsible for the rediscovery of contertenor vocals. This album contains lighter, shorter folk tunes of the Elizabethan age. Some may find Deller's falsetto eery or unnerving but he offers a masterful recreation of an ancient technique.

While conventional wisdom probably dictates that NRBQ is "the world's greatest bar band" (patent pending), I'm here to make a case for New London, Connecticut's Reducers. Over five albums, 20-some years, and endless gigging, these guys have been mixing adrenalized pop, pathos, and social commentary into a cocksure roar of satisfaction that is unsullied by MTV or any A&R department's marketing plan. And in order to ensure it always remains so, it's all been done under the aegis of their own record label, a move worthy of genuflection on all of our parts. Like any bar band (and I use that term with the utmost respect) worth its salt, The Reducers obviously had to learn a few covers along the way and as demonstrated by "Old Cons," which gathers live tracks and studio outtakes, their taste is impeccable. Let's face it - any album that opens with the ragtag rabble of Wreckless Eric's "Take The Cash (K.A.S.H.)" is off to one hell of a start. Need more proof? How about reverberating, smart-alecky, and sometimes shambolic strolls through Larry Wallis' "Police Car," Chan Romero's "Hippy Hippy Shake," Nick Lowe's "That's It I Quit," "Mack The Knife," and (yes, there is a God!) a take on Tenpole Tudor's "Three Bells In A Row" that lights up the room? And if all that wasn't carelessly generous enough on their part, they even throw in joyful exercises in volume like The Inmates' "(I Thought I Heard A) Heartbeat," Wilson Pickett's "Ninety Nine And A Half (Won't Do)," and Dr. Feelgood's (Wilko Johnson-era Feelgood, the only one that matters) "Going Back Home." Don't come here looking for slick surfaces, an audiophile experience, or any answers to the questions of the universe. The Reducers are avatars of amateurish enthusiasm and garage band grunt and, on the surface, appear to have all the brains of a bag of hammers. But don't be fooled. A quick listen to any of their four studio albums will put any of those notions to rest. These Yanks are dazzlingly accomplished at what they do, as if that weren't immediately apparent by their choise of footwear, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star. There's a party going on within these grooves and you don't have to look very hard to find it. Get your wallet out...

John Williams is a great player of the guitar and no two ways about that. Apart from his solo and individual performances, I recall his duo concerts with Julian Bream. Williams would sit upright, poised, aloof and above-it-all while Bream sweated and laboured, but when it comes to sheer aristocracy as a player I can't think Williams is the equal of the great Bream.

This disc is a very odd medley indeed. Stephen Dodgson's 'Fantasy Divisions' is an original composition for the guitar, and no arrangement is attributed to the three Dowland numbers at the start of the disc, from which I infer that they must be lute works. The others are arrangements either by Williams himself or by Steve Gray, or, in the case of the Lennon/McCartney 'Fool on the Hill', by Leo Brouwer. There is a vague link of 'London' in the music -- obviously Handel's English career happened there and several of the other pieces have the capital's name in their titles, but I would have liked less eclecticism in the choice of music, and I don't believe we would have lost anything by abandoning the half-hearted London theme. The recital starts with mediaeval music, skips to Purcell and Handel and then, via Elgar's ever-fresh Salut d'Amour, to a a complete ragbag of 20th century offerings. Dodgson's modernistic Fantasy Divisions are not likely to share much of a public with Lennon and McCartney, I wouldn't have thought, although I hope Ralph McTell's 'The Streets of London' will appeal to anyone who is not tone-deaf and who has any love of any kind of music at all. In my own view a love of music is a serious impediment to being able to tolerate 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square', although I owe to this production the information that the world owes this work to one Sherwin Maschwitz. Otherwise the Gershwins are here, as is Stanley Myers's Cavatina which was adapted for The Deer Hunter. I own up to an abomination of Noel Coward that turns me off anything bearing his name, and I find that Sandy Wilson's 'A Room in Bloomsbury' was partly responsible, alas, for launching the career of Julie Andrews. There are some orchestral contributions, but the names of the participants, other than the conductors, remain understandably suppressed.

I can forgive just about any compositional atrocity when the performance is of a certain stature. However I have to measure this record against a recently acquired disc of 'Spanish'/Catalan works from Bream, and the playing here just does not seem to me to be in the same class. Maybe Williams deliberately adopts a certain sameness of tone to reflect English pallor, but I suspect that the wonderful creativity and versatility of Bream is just not Williams's way of doing things.

The recorded sound is fine if unexciting, and the liner note moderately informative. We are not told who is responsible for them, and I can't say I feel particularly curious either.

For lovers of classical guitar and London, this album is a great addition to a good CD collection.

John Williams plays many of the songs on this album accompanied by full orchestra and chorus, and while the album does not bring out the extent of William's talent as one the world's best classical guitarists, it does evoke whimsical memories of London and is very well crafted. Let me put it this way, this album is best enjoyed on a rainy afternoon with a hot cup of tea. It is beautiful relaxing music that will not be dissappoint you.
