These are probably the best recordings of the Rodrigo guitar concertos available. There is noticeable analog tape hiss in the background but this is a small price to pay for these excellent, classic recordings. The technical precision of Pepe Romero on the guitar along with the excellent performance of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the equally good sound engineering is a rare treat. Rodrigo and the Romeros seem meant to go together so this CD set is a must have. It's unfortunate that an equally good recording of the Concierto Serenata is not included. The performance on the harp is disappointing. I am puzzled why Catherine Michel breaks into chords where Rodrigo wrote arpeggios. If this is artistic license it is a poor choice. The sound of the harp often fades behind the sound of the orchestra too. The entire recording seems poorly engineered. The orchestra sounds distant, as if it is poorly mixed or too few microphones were used. In the absence of a better performance, the Concierto Serenata would have best been left off the disc.

Wow!! Fantastic stuff that is highly recommended for classical music listeners old and new. Hats off to Phillips for collecting these songs by Spanish maestro Rodrigo and presenting them on two discs. Besides the more familiar fare like "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" and "Concierto de Arunjuez," which I never get tired of, there are various other conciertos that are so soothing and extremely relaxing. This is music to park your mind in tranquility bay with, a blissfull audio experience, orchestral nirvana for the classical music neophyte. The "Madrigal Concierto" is especially note worthy, the two guitars and orchestra are magical as they play in unison, elevating the listener to heights unknown and back. There are various performers on this disc and all are outstanding. The performance of Los Romeros on guitars and Catherine Michel plucking her heavenly harp are exceptional and simply perfect to my ears. These are all recordings from the 70's and early 80's but have been digitally remastered for a crystal clear sound. If you like the music of Joaquin Rodrigo you will love this compilation of 155 min+ of his best compositions at an incredibly low price.

I cannot compare these works with others by this composer because this was my first experience of him, but for the information of anyone else who is not familiar with Joaquin Rodrigo, I would describe him as a Spanish Aaron Copland in that they were contemporaries and they both incorporated national folk music into their compositions. It's difficult for me to imagine anyone of any age not enjoying these works.

this cd are the best works for guitar by rodrigo, and the best interpretation by the romeros, especially Pepe Romero. His friendship with rodrigo was very important for the interpretation of the concierto de aranjuez and the concierto madrigal with his brother Angel. A great work and i am excited with this cd.

    If you like Bach - and you like good guitar music - you'll love this CD. The Amsterdam Trio are a very talented group. It's beautiful!

    The whole CD is well performed. However, the 5th concerto suffers from a balance problem. When the harpsicord plays the other instruments dissapear into the background. This would have easily been a five star recording if that was addressed.

    Any serious Bach or Brandenburg enthusiast, or someone desiring a some good night music/background music should have this album in their collection.

    All 3 movements of Bradenburg Concerto #6 lends itself very well to rendition with guitar. Listening to it is a pleasure. Movement #1 of concerto #5 is a disappointment. It is a great piece of music but is not well rendered by guitar. The other concertos fall somewhere in between. Overall, I think that this a very good quality CD and is well worth the purchase.

    I bought 2 copies of this set. Both were incorrectly pressed at the factory. The music was not classical. It was some kind of new age stuff. The number of tracks and their lengths were nowhere close to those listed on the album. Its probably a great set if you get the right music.

    I was a bit hesitant about buying this because of the price, but after listening a few times and hearing the all-around excellent quality (compositions, performance, recording), I consider this the same type of bargain as when I had purchased the Beethoven Symphony cycle conducted by Herbert von Karajan (DG 29036).

    These two cds also make for a good listening avenue for those who are interested in guitar but may be unfamiliar with "classical" music. In fact, it was Pat Metheny's "Secret Story" that inspired me to listen to music beyond "jazz" and become more receptive to orchestral music. And I view compositions, such as Ponce's "Concierto Del Sur", Villa-Lobos's "Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra" and Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez" as good second steps to the appreciation of guitar with orchestral music.

    When I think about what attracts me to this music and the playing of John Williams, I think of two words: virtuosity and humility; the idea of being excellent as a guitar player, but aware of being part of an overarching theme of which he is only one out of many musicians who bring it to fruition.

    I wish NPR stations would play these and other great guitar music more than they do. Good thing it's available on CD. Starting off with Vivaldi's Concerto in D Major, I much prefer the recording on Williams' Seville Concert CD. The same goes for the Aranjuez Adagio. I also prefer Paco de Lucia's performance of the Aranjuez allegro movements. Aranjuez seems to just keep getting more legendary with each new recording from just about every guitar master. I like Rodrigo's "Fantasia" almost as much as Aranjuez, but I like Pepe Romero's version just as much or even a little more than Williams'. I'm not that crazy about the few Castelnuovo-Tedesco's compositions that I've heard, but I find that his concerto on this CD is exceptional, both in melody and theme development.

    Vivaldi again starts off CD number 2 with a somewhat pleasant concerto. The Giuliani Concerto is an outstanding work that blends beautifully the classical orchestra and the guitar. Furthermore, the guitar comes through loud and clear, overcoming the usual problem of the orchestra drowning out the guitar. I'm not sure if the mike was placed at just the right position for the guitar or what. In any case, it sounds fabulous. I'm luke warm toward the Villa-Lobos Concerto but find the very beginning of the second movement mesmerizing. As with Castelnuovo-Tedesco, few pieces from Ponce inspire me; however, "Concierto del Sur" is a surprisingly captivating concerto with its lyrical qualities and dynamics. Moreover, the third movement ends with an exciting bang. This CD was well worth the price of a double CD collection.

    You can't go wrong with this double disc set. John Williams is among the finest living classical guitar virtuosi today. His harmonics are similar to that of the great Christopher Parkening, and his style of playing is clearly influenced by Andres Sergovia. Then again, who hasn't Sergovia influenced? Buy it.

    Antes que el sello Naxos grabara las obras de Rodrigo,
    estaba esta grabaccion, la que era y aun es recomendada.
    Batiz es un gran exponente de la musica de Rodrigo,
    aclamado por el mismo compositor, Batiz dirige las
    obras de Rodrigo con claridad, y a la vez mantiene
    las obras con el espiritu original que el compositor
    expresa. En esta grabaccion el maestro Batiz dirige
    tres orquestas:la Royal Philharmonic, London Symphony;
    y Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico. Los
    unicos conciertos que aqui no aparecen son: Concierto
    para una Fiesta, y Concierto como un Divertimento.

    I had much of this material on vinyl, and it's great to have these packaged on 4 full budget-priced CDs. The sound is quite acceptable, although a little bright, which was common for early digital recordings from the 80's. But, they're otherwise clear and full. There are better recordings of the guitar concertos (which is a crowded field), but they hold up fairly well - and are better than Batiz' rerecordings of the some of the guitar concertos he did some 10 years ago on ASV.
    The other concertos are quite nice as well. Distinctively Rodrigo-esque!
    Anyone interested in this set will want to invest in Batiz' more recent survey with his Mexican State Orchestra of Rodrigo works.

    This is an album dedicated to the works of one of the most prominent Spanish composers of the 20th Century. His music is luscious, melodic, with uncompromised energy and excitement. Rodrigo was blind and had a love affair with the Concerto form, and this is Batiz's dedication to the man and his many works in that form.

    I too disagree with the reviewer who said the recording was muddy. I think it captures the music well, and all of the soloists come out as intended in the score. I think the balance and tone are wonderful. I hope that helps!

    As a long-time fan of Joaquin Rodrigo and a more recent fan of Enrique Batiz I eagerly looked forward to getting acquainted with some of Rodrigo's rarely heard pieces. Unfortunately thoses pieces will remain rarely heard due to the poor production quality of the CD. The sound was muddy and indistinct. Most of the tracks sound as if the microphone was under the stage. I had to strain to hear the guitar, harp, and flute soloists.

      The solo works of Cuban guitarist-composer Leo Brouwer are adventurous music, filled with imagination and ingenious treatment of the instrument. These concertos show a drastically different approach to the instrument and to the art of music; they are very mild-mannered, emotionally and musically conservative pieces which sound like superior pops concert music. If that's what you like, you'll find this CD an entertaining way to pass an hour, and it's more vividly recorded than the RCA version of No. 3 played by Julian Bream and conducted by the composer. Just don't expect the Brouwer of L'espiral eternel or his other solo guitar music. --Leslie Gerber

      I thought the sound quality of this recording was acceptable, but the playing was a little too "safe." Concerto Elegiaco was composed for Julian Bream, and his recording has Leo Brouwer conducting the RCA Victor Chamber Orchestra. In spite of it's lower audio quality and live performance flubs (which kind of make it even more appealing to me), the sensitivity of the Bream preformance is much more enlightening to me. Concerto de Toronto was composed for John Williams. This Ricardo Cobo cd is okay if you can pick it up for $5-7. Otherwise, get the Bream and Williams editions if anything for the authenticity. Oh yeah, I almost forgot: the cover art for this cd is lame.

      I'm glad these rarely heard Brouwer guitar concertos have been recorded. Currently, Concert Elegiaco has only 2 other recordings available; one by Sergio Puccini on the Klavier Label (KCD-11093 ASIN: B00000G3W5) and one by the dedicatee, Julian Bream on RCA. The Concerto de Toronto only has one other recording available by the dedicatee, John Williams on Sony #63173 (ASIN: B0000062E6).

      Let's start with the Concerto Elegiaco. I have not heard the Julian Bream recording but I have heard the Sergio Puccini's recording on the Klavier label. Both performances are very good. Cobo is a little bit more polished than Puccini, but both are very good. My major compliant is with the quality of the ESSAY recording, which lacks detail and intimacy. These guitar concertos were composed for small orchestra and require a more intimate recording with there colorful instrumentation including marimba. The Klavier recording is warm, intimate and detailed with all instruments clearly audible which makes it very easy on the ears and satisfying . Even though the performance on the ESSAY label was a little better it was not satisfying because of the below average recording. Too bad, Ricardo Cobo and Brouwer deserve better.

      The Concerto de Toronto is a more interesting concerto in my opinion but is again plagued by below average recording quality. The Concerto de Toronto preformed by John Williams on Sony is a better performance and a much better recording.

      In the end I recommend that you get the Williams and Puccini recordings over this one. I have to give this recording a 2 star rating for recorded quality and 4 stars for performance which comes out to 3 stars overall.

      I think Ricardo Cobo is THE best Brouwer performer in the world. Technically great, but what feeling in his play. It is a joy to listen to him. As for the Brouwer compositions. I love them. Especially the Interlude from Concerto Elegiaco which has a a lot of elements of Etude Simple No. XVII. This is a great CD. A must for a all Brouwer, and now Cobo, fans!
