A "rare" collection.......2007-02-08
A wonderful grouping of well-known and less well-known pieces for cello and piano--a pleasure to listen to over and over again.
Music that will make you tingle inside..........2005-06-10
Ok, I don't usually write reviews, since of course, I see so many people spouting off at the mouth about things that they either don't understand or those that just want to complain or self-gratify.
That being said though, I had to write a little something about this cd. I'll admit a prejudice for those Ma-Ax recordings, so bear with me. I think they are one of the strongest ensemble musicians I've encountered. Not only in their duo recordings are they always musicians first and foremost and not merely soloists recording together but also in those venues which include other greats, like Isaac Stern or Richard Stoltzman.
The main pieces on this recording are nearly awe-inspiring. While Ax describes in the liner notes the Profiev as having some 'crude and ackward' treatment of the melodies, I found it to be very intense and dark. Loving every bit of the piece. I don't think its as intense as the Shostakovich, but there are some similarities.
The real gem on this cd though has to be the Rachmaninoff. There's a place towards the very beginning of the first movement that will make you tingle in a spot, that dare not speak its name, or my name isn't Artemis Jack, which it isn't, but I'm sure you'll still enjoy it anyway.
To be honest with you, there's not a moment in the Rachmaninoff that isn't filled with unbelievable lushness and magic, every moment in the sonata is amazing. You'd think that with a piece so heavily dominated by the piano that the cellist would get lost or pushed into a corner someplace. Not only does the cellist play a very important role, but in ways has the choicest melodies. I wouldn't guess that many cellists would find this piece terribly challenging, but I would hope they'd revell in the experience.
I should commend Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma for being the wonderful chamber musicians they are. One of the things that people don't always understand, musicians and audiences alike, is that chamber music is very 'conversational'. My own experience as a professional pianist has at times led me to despise working with others because they simply refuse to acknowledge or share with another musician. Lets face it, the score may list this instrument or that one first, but without the piano where in the world would you be??? The main thing in all of the chamber music environments is to converse, exchange, and relish in the experience thats available in playing such great music.
If there's anything to squak about it, its the following snippets from other works. I'm not sure who's brilliant idea it was to include them, but it really is annoying and almost taints the whole experience of the first two works. That isn't to say that the music isn't beautiful and wonderfully played, but for me, there was just nothing else that needed to be said after the Rachmaninoff. Besides, if you're able to hear the Shostakovich, played by Ma/Ax, you'll agree that having just the second movement is a letdown.
No matter, I hope you'll be able to experience this cd and all the lush wonderfulness it has to offer. I finally also apologize for succumbing to the very thing that I said I detested...verbose self-gratification! Oh well, whats a guy to do?
Possible the most sublime cello sonata.......2004-06-14
As the CD cover indicates, the star performance on this CD is the Rachmaninoff sonata played by Ma and Ax. I would recommend any cello music lover to buy this CD for the Rachmaninoff sonata alone. My only disappointment is that the Shostakovich sonata is not present in its full on this CD, the allegro movement is breathtaking, Ma is certainly the king of cellists, and Ax is as per usual a superb match for Ma.

The duo of cellist Mischa Maisky and pianist Martha Argerich is known for the virtuoso flair they bring to their performances. This recording from a 2003 Brussels concert is no exception. The way they tear into the wild second movement Allegro of the Shostakovich, with both artists rattling off its grotesqueries at warp speed, will have you at the edge of your chair. They're as admirable in the brooding Largo of that work and in conveying the rhapsodic Romanticism of the Prokofiev Sonata. At times they can seem self-indulgent, lingering over phrases in both of those Sonatas and teasing the lines in Stravinsky's Suite italienne, which the composer arranged for cello and piano from his Pulcinella ballet. But the flip side of that is the spontaneity that they achieve here, and even when pianissimos are taken down to the barely audible or diminuendos are exaggerated, the effects are too thrilling to complain about. Here's another must-have for their many fans. --Dan Davis

Easy listening.......2007-01-13
The music on this CD is easy to listen to. I sometimes put it in my Bose as the wake-up music.
Virtuoso Music, Virtuoso Performances.......2005-07-25
There are, as reviewers always say, other ways to play this music. But few other teams have captured the fire and ice of this very disparate music of three Russian masters. With Pulcinella, Stravinsky announced to the world his own brand of neoclassicism (which he had been working toward, certainly, through pieces such as the Octet). The "Suite Italien" drawn from Pulcinella and arranged for cello and piano by Stravinsky and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky has more edginess than the orchestral original, I find, and so seems even more Stravinskian.
With the Prokofiev, we hear one of the best examples of that master's compromise between his earlier spiky modernism and later more populist style. Here, without doubt, is one of the great pieces of 20th-century chamber music, with its warm and generous opening andante (punctuated by moments of dark drama), its jocose march-like second movement, and its riveting and headlong finale. Well, it's headlong in this performance anyway. Maybe Maisky and Argerich don't precisely adhere to Prokofiev's Allego ma non troppo marking, but the results are scintillating, virtuoso in the extreme.
For me, Shostakovich's Cello Sonata is on a lower artistic plane, though it certainly has its enticements: the grotesquery of the scherzo second movement is Shostakovich at his most interesting and haunting. I'm in a minority, I'm sure, but you can keep many of his long-winded and supposedly dramatic slow movements, including the Largo of this sonata. We're back on familiar ground, though, in the finale, and Maisky and Argerich's is as exciting a performance of this strange, beguiling music--like a glance ahead to the finale of the Ninth Symphony--as you're likely to hear.
DG's recording has all the benefits, none of the drawbacks of live recording. There is warm cello sound and full, rich piano tone without clangor. Plus the applause is separately banded, so you can listen or not as you wish; during the music (except for the encore, a waltz by Prokofiev) the audience is dead silent. Recommended without a single reservation.
Bravado Showmanship in an Exhilarating Concert.......2005-07-21
Martha Argerich and Mischa Maisky - what a partnership! This is one of those live concert recordings that overcomes all technical blemishes and simply glows with superb playing. Recorded in a concert in 2003 in Belgium, these two superior musicians have a chemistry easily observed in concert and equally palpable on recordings. This is a must have CD for almost all music lovers.
Three works comprise this recital. The first piece in a transcription for cello and piano written by Stravinsky himself of portions of his ballet 'Pulchinella'. Argerich and Maisky dive right into the Italianate parody with zest and extraordinary facility of playing. Both the Prokofiev and Shostakovich Sonatas find each musician exploring the rich profundities of their individual instruments as well as the dashing eccentricities and joys of the piano and cello in tandem. The result is not only a dazzling musical conversation but also an expansion of the validity of each composer's work.
The playing is of the highest quality and the recorded sound is excellent: the ambience of the hall adds to the musical mixing. For shear joy of fine music perfectly played with soul and heart, this recital is no one to be passed over lightly! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05
unique.......2005-05-07
It's like continuation of his Live in Japan, debussy, franck, and chopin... I met Mischa Maisky in Schlern Music Festival in Italy. I heard his third movement of Shostakovich sonata while he was giving a master class. In the small room, everybody dropped massive bitter sour tears. The room was filled with unexplainable charisma... It was so unforgetable scent of music that I had to buy this recording.

It is always salutary to hear Shostakovich perform his own music. If his own performances are any indication of how he intended his music to be played, then current performances of his music are much too slow--and much too serious. Compare the composer's own, never-before-released recording of the Violin Sonata with David Oistrakh (taped in the violinist's apartment in December 1968, just after the work was completed) with the famous one of the official world premiere a few months later. That performance, in which Oistrakh (to whom the work was dedicated) was joined by Sviatoslav Richter, is still available as part of BMG's five-disc David Oistrakh Edition and is irreplaceable. But Shostakovich's tempos in the march theme of the first movement bring an element of unexpected humor to what, even in the Oistrakh-Richter reading, has always seemed unrelievedly grim. Shostakovich, whose playing was by then impaired by his polio, sometimes struggles with the notes.
No such qualifications attach to the 1947 performance of the Piano Trio in E Minor (with Oistrakh and cellist Milos Sadlo) and the 1946 recording of the Cello Sonata in D Minor, in which Shostakovich partners with Daniel Shafran. The Trio, otherwise available only in a somewhat sanitized transfer in Vol. I of Doremi's David Oistrakh Collection, is played with a brutal energy that makes other versions sound sentimental, even naive. The surprisingly well-recorded performance of the Cello Sonata is better, as well as faster, than the celebrated one made 16 years later by the composer with Mstislav Rostropovich. Shafran's cello playing is powerful without sounding ponderous, and poetic without a trace of affectation. His performance is also filled with imaginative touches--such as the eerie timbral effects created by the way he accelerates during the scherzo's glissandi. The composer must have loved the zest with which Shafran played his music, and listeners will, too. --Stephen Wigler
Customer Reviews:
Shostakovich The Genius.......2002-04-27
Shostakovich was clearly a genius and this CD shows that. He lived under such torture under the Soviet power and tried to express his sadness in his music - unfortunately though, he was nearly arrested for writing music that Stalin did not like.
I also recomend listening to Shostakovich's Piano Preludes.
I believe that these are some of his only works in which the composer expresses himself truely. But this CD also shows that, which is why i THOROUGHLY recomend it.
Email me to hear some of my compositions, inspired by the genius of Shostakovich.

Very Nice.......2006-08-12
I must say I enjoyed pretty much all of the songs on this album. "Victory" by Bond was the only thing they shouldn't have included, since it doesn't quite qualify as "classical" and wasn't what I would call a hit, anyway. True, it was instrumental, but real classical music is of a higher caliber. ("Now We Are Free" isn't quite classical either but it's not 'commercialized' like "Victory.") I really liked "Duel of the Fates," "Maria," "Now We Are Free," and "O Fortuna." Those were my favorites out of a great selection of songs. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't really care for full-blown classical.
Eh... it's okay for the young........2006-02-03
I bought this cd when it first came out, as my first real taste of anything even remotely classical. And for that purpose, it works. For someone getting into classical seriously though, I'd start somewhere else.
Almost perfect..........2005-09-17
aside from the second track (Bond-Victory) and the title track from the movie Braveheart, this is a decent classical album. The Bond-Victory selection is embarrassing commercial crap.
okay.......2002-11-08
This is a perfect album for someone who doesn't like classical music. It's almost like classical crib notes. The mix is great for dinner or party music but I was left wanting more. I'm not sure of it, but it felt like each song was shortened some how.
Almost Perfect!!!!.......2002-01-17
This album contains many of contemporary classic music's finest songs sung by many of the finest singers in the world. Bocelli, Brightman, Fleming, Watson, just to name a few. The problem here is with the opener, where the song is sung by the execrable Charlotte Church. Its a mystery to everyone I know who has heard this CD why this song is not sung by Sarah Brightman who did the original and defining version. The rendition by Church simply demonstrates her lack of vocal control and emotion. Even a cover by Renee Fleming is far superior to that of Church's. The only thing I can think of here is that since the album is put out by Sony, and Charlotte is owned by Sony, they had to find some place for her songs after paying her so much money.
If not for Church poisoning the well on track 1, this album is an absolute 5-star

Shostakovich's Trio No. 2 is a grim masterpiece, a disguised tribute to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust written during World War II and actually using Jewish folk themes. The Cello Sonata was written a decade earlier, but it has its own dark political shadows of Stalinism. So don't buy this disc for fun and games. But do buy it for a couple of 20th-century masterpieces, played by a trio of well-known musicians who perform the music with great dedication. If you can put up with old sound, you can hear both of these pieces played by the composer (the Sonata on MultiSonic 31 0179, the Trio on Doremi DHR 7701). --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
The Three Masters.......2007-01-11
We bought this for the Three Masters - Stern, Yo-YO Ma and Ax.
The Trio, the first piece, you really have to like Shostakovich.
We skip to the the second piece - The Sonata for Cello and Piano, which is great.
notes from a mere fan.......2006-08-12
A few reviewers hold that this is a lackluster performance, somehow devoid of energy or enthusiasm. Perhaps the performers, being famous, relied on their fame to carry the performance, and their heart wasn't in it.
Of course other listeners, most more sensitive than I, disagree. That's the way of it. One of the pleasures of classical music and of life is the freedom to listen for oneself. No one agrees about much of anything. Another one of the great pleasures of classical music is comparing interpretations and performances, and if you have the time and the coin, you should definitely indulge in several recordings of any piece of music. You might consider starting out with the Naxos recording of the trio (ASIN: B0000014DB).
Trusting my own (admittedly rather ignorant) ears, I could also ask for more from several parts of this recording. But I feel the fourth movement of the trio is so beautiful, so intense, so tragic, so violent, so perfect--if music could kill this would be a fatal, romantic, ecstatic experience--that I recommend it enthusiastically. Those ten minutes, listen to them over and over, they will change you. They are worth the price of this CD.
Unless...
If you happen to be new to Shostakovich, let me recommend starting with Kronos Quartet's "Black Angels" CD (ASIN: B000005J0D). That features a number of interesting (some rather shocking) pieces of music, including my favorite recording of Shostakovich's eighth string quartet. That was my unforgettable introduction to Shostakovich, and I recommend it very strongly to anyone starting out with Shostakovich. No matter what the merits of this recording, that is in every way a better introduction to Shostakovich.
(And besides, in addition to an introduction to Shostakovich, there you can meet George Crumb, who does things you will never believe with string instruments. If you doubt musical sacrilege is possible, or if you hate your neighbors, listen to that with the volume up. It is, at any rate, memorable. Buy it for the Shostakovich, and brace yourself for the Crumb.)
Great Engineering, lackluster performance . . . .......2006-05-23
I got this version of the Trio because my other version suffered from mic-up-the-nose-itis (sniff-sniiiiiiffff!) This one certainly had improved sound quality and was virtually free of background noise - but the trade-off is a very lifeless performance. You would think that with such great talent as this disc boasts that the Trio #2 would be at the top of its class - but what we get is a merely serviceable rendition with no punch, no verve. During the moment of eubulation at the midway point of the first movement, the trio seem to be merely plodding along when they should be letting loose with sudden and rapturous joy! The same occurs in the second movement. Fortunately, when the brooding third and fourth movements come along, the trio is much more in its element, and close out the Trio nicely.
As for the Cello Sonata, I have no other version to compare it to - and as it is rare to find a recording of it, I would have to say it was a nice addition to the disc, and seemed fine in my estimation.
For those who are curious, my previous version of the Trio #2 is from the NAXOS recording.
Incredible.......2004-04-10
In response to reviewer m_a_portnoi, I would disagree with his assessment that the trio features no 'nervous tension'. The final movement, in particular, is full of raging bitterness and a terrifying insanity. Stern and Ma frequently sound as if they are tearing into their insturments, and are driven mad with an internalized hate. I remember hearing the "Largo" and "Allegretto" on the radio when I was 12 and being completely blown apart by its power, feeling like I was hearing some furious, spiritualized madness, and looking for a copy for months. This was the one I purchased, and I still believe that it is one of the greatest music recordings in my collection, and without a doubt among the best I've heard, of any genre. Yes, the performance is a little less 'on edge' and 'nervous' than the traditional Shostakovich arrangements and conductions, but I believe that this is a testament to his power as a composer, to allow for such a different kind of beauty to come out in his work - the lushness and thick, slow craziness of the "Largo" is a great example of this. All Shostakovich compositons are beautiful, whether or not they are 'ugly' or 'tense', and these three performers really bring out a softer, but no less horrifying and spiritually disturbing, texture to the work; through them the music becomes ultimately uplifting and deeper in its meaning. Though, I believe one can never really go wrong with any Shostakovich work.
I could go on and on about how marvelous this record is. If you're considering it, do give it a try. Yes, its beautiful, but since when is that bad? Even beauty has depth to it.
Stern-Ma-Ax provide lifeless Shostakovich.......2003-03-13
This was my first recording of the Piano Trio and the Cello Sonata. I bought it with the understanding that the ensemble is made up of three legendary performers, and therefore chances are the performance would be satisfactory. And indeed, when I listened to it, I was very pleased. The performance was lively, exciting, and had everything I had sought in it.
HOWEVER, hindsight is 20/20. And I have listened to many, many performances and many, many recordings of the works since then. And what I find is that this ensemble plays Shostakovich as if he were Brahms: a great, lush sound, and LEGATO. Mstislav Rostropovich would remark, "they play beautifully!"
But Slava was being ironic. Shostakovich's music is never, ever, ever at ease. He was a tense and nervous person, and this recording, in retrospect, has lots of energy, but no NERVOUS energy. The lines are rarely disconnected, no risks are taken, and the listener gets absolutely no sense of the unsettled man that Dmitri Shostakovich was, by all accounts. I suggest Olli Mustonen, Joshua Bell, & Steven Isserlis; Gilels-Kogan-Rostropovich or either of the two recordings Shostakovich himself did of the work are also excellent. The energy is boiling over in those, and it is of a variety consistent with the composer's language.

excellent overview of contemporaneous classic music.
Should be continued, plenty more 20th-century composers to be discovered.

This 2 cd set consists of, as the title indicates, various 20c pieces or movements from the Naxos catalog. Sound quality is uniformly high, although for some such as Stockhausen's it's not clear if that's good or bad. What is excellent is the variety of the collection--some familiar (Debussy), others not, some pretty, others intentionally weird. Few will find every piece to his or her taste, but many listeners who do not spend much time on 20c music will find something to like. Overall, a great introduction to a period of much off-putting, yes, but also much compelling music.

Viola sonata 5 stars; overall disc 4 stars........2007-07-12
I have another recording of the viola sonata I am very pleased with, so at Naxos price I figured why not get another, but especially to try out the transcription of the cello sonata (one of my favorite Shostakovich works.) If you're considering this disc primarily for the recording of the viola sonata, then it is well-recommended. The playing and interpretation are first-rate, and, as with most Naxos discs lately, the recorded sound is excellent. Now if you have never heard the Cello Sonata (opus 40) before, this viola-transcription may be an interesting piece. The original is a favorite of mine - I have several recordings - and I think I'd rather hear a paltry performance on cello than the viola transcription. Nothing against the viola or the player, but this music was written for the richness of the cello (along with piano of course) and is not served as well on viola. Conversely, the viola sonata probably wouldn't come off if it was transcribed for cello; the music was intended to be played on viola. This certainly is not the case for every piece of music, but these pieces by Shostakovich I think are best as originally composed. Here is another Naxos disc if you're interested in Opus 40:

Shostakovich's Final Brushstroke........2004-08-24
Dmitri Shostakovich was a giant of 20th Century Classical music. Throughout his lifetime, he was a prolific composer beginning during his teen years all the way up to just weeks before his death in August 1975 at the age of 68.
The Sonata for Viola and Piano was Shostakovich's final composition written roughly one month before his death and premiered on what would have been his 69th birthday in September 1975. The recording presented on this disc was recorded in 2001 and performed by viola virtuoso Annette Bartholdy and pianist Julius Drake. Throughout the 34-minute work, there are moments of beautiful serenity with contrasting sections of grave yearning and sadness. If anything, there is definitely a sense of pending death heard in this music as if Shostakovich knew his time on earth would be soon be ending. The Viola Sonata definitely serves as a fitting requiem to this dynamic composer.
Also included on this CD is a viola-adapted version of Shostakovich's Cello Sonata (originally composed in 1934). In sharp contrast to the 1975 work, the Cello sonata is a lively piece which has an overall influence of Bach and Mozart. The adaptation for viola gives the music a Chamber-like quality and is full of vigor and virtuosity.
Don't let the cheap price of this disc fool you. This is an awesome and definitive quality recording of Shostakovich's final masterwork. It's a fitting farewell delivered in an emotion filled performance. In other words, the low price is a steal.
Definitely A Must!!!
