Good introduction to divas of 1909-1940.......2007-04-11
This CD features some of the greats of the era--Amelita Galli-Curci, Geraldine Farrar, Kirsten Flagstad, Rosa Ponselle; it also features lesser known divas, such as Mabel Garrison and Eide Norena. As such, this provides an entree to the wealth of talent among singers from 1909-1940.
The CD begins with Frieda Hempel singing the cabaletta "Vien Diletto," from Bellini's "I Puritani." A musical rendition, this cut shows how technique in the coloratura repertoire has changed over time. She highlights high notes rather than the Sutherland-Sills armamentarium of trills. Given the acoustic technology, this is an interesting version of the well-known piece.
Galli-Curci follows with an affecting treatment of "Non so piu" from Mozart's "Le Nozze de Figaro." Immediately thereafter is a nice take on Tosca's "Vissi d'arte" by Geraldine Farrar.
Kirsten Flagstad sings two pieces from Wagner's "Ring." The sweet "Du bist der Lenz" from "Die Walkure" is well sung. The "liner notes" refer to her as having "a lasting purity and thrilling beauty of tone. . . ." The next cut has her singing "Ho-jo-to-ho" from the same opera, "Die Walkure." A nice version, with her strong voice handling the challenges of this work well.
In the final analysis, this is a good introduction to female singers of the era. Of course, many worthy singers are not included (e.g., Marcella Sembrich, Claudia Muzio, Luisa Tetrazinni, etc.). However, this is part of a larger series and one CD cannot capture the full range of singers whose inclusion would be justified.
