Here's a handy collection of popular works for violin and orchestra. The title apparently refers to the mix of warmly romantic music, like the Massenet Méditation, and flashy virtuoso stuff, like the Sarasate Carmen Fantasy and Zigeunerweisen. Sarah Chang excels in both areas. Her Dvorák and Beethoven Romances are sweetly sung, while the insanely virtuosic Tzigane by Ravel, with its wild staccato and chordal effects, she tosses off without breaking a sweat. Except for the romanticized Bach Air from the Suite No. 3, there are no stylistic transgressions, and the mix of fiery virtuoso fare and romantic slower beauties keeps interest alive throughout. Conductor Placido Domingo's proficient accompaniments don't get in her way. All the selections are familiar. Such violin virtuosi as Suk, Oistrakh, Grumiaux, Vengerov, and Perlman have recorded most of them, often coming closer to capturing the inner glow of the music. But Chang's exciting performances can't fail to please, especially if you want all these favorites on one disc. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Fire and Ice? Fire, yes. But ? Brava Sarah! Theresa NY.......2005-04-22
After listening to this CD by Sarah Chang I can see the Fire in all of the selections, even the "Meditiation" by Massenet. But where the Ice comes in I cannot tell. Sarah plays with such vibrance and zeal and even if you've never heard the selection before it doesn't matter. Her interpretation of "Zigeunerweisen" is the best I have ever heard. And I think Placido Domingo also does a fabulous job of conducting. All in all, this is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable CD's I own. I urge you to buy it. You won't be sorry.
I'm impressed . . ........2004-10-22
I put the CD in CD player, turned up the volume, and went about the house doing domestic things. I had to stop doing the dishes, dry my hands, and run upstairs (and I do not like the stairs, have major issues with the stairs!) just to check the disc information. The playing was that good, jaw-droppingly so. I'm impressed.
Chang v. Perlman.......2004-10-03
This album has almost the same repertoire as one by Perlman. Some days I prefer the Perlman version, other days I prefer Sarah's version. Sarah has been a perfect technical virtuoso since she was 13. At age 19, she has matured in her artistic interpretation to rival the best in the world. (I consider Itzak Perlman to be the best, but Sarah is nearly his equal, and she is yet quite young.) I eagerly await each new album she publishes. I wish she would come to town so I could hear her live. I also wish she would record occasionally on analog LP, especially direct disc. I find CDs much less faithful to the sound of live music than LPs, though at least todays CD players are somewhat listenable, instead of making the dreadful sounds they did when the medium was new.
Great Sarasate.......2002-12-25
This recording of Carmen and Zigeunerweisen is hard to do any better. Simply great fiddle playing! Chang's vibrato and virtuosity suits this style perfectly and not many can play the page full of thirds in Carmen as well as she did it! Least successful was Beethoven and Bach. I rather prefer a more poetic mood (slower tempo) and a slightly less expansive vibrato for this kind of music. Sarah has a sometimes very broad vibrato well suited for fiery stuff but not so well suited for music that demands a certain level of sophistication. Anyway that is just my personal opinion as a violin freak. I guess the broader audience would not mind since the sound is very nice even if the vibrato is a bit out of control at times.
Thanks Sarah for yet another great recording!
Wow!.......2002-11-16
I think there's only two words to describe her playing --- Absolutely Awesome!

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25
I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.
Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka
As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

Glad I got a good recording.......2005-03-14
Although I grew up listening to and playing classical music (in the amateur category), only recently have I started working on my own collection and expanding my exposure to different composers and performers. I was not previously familiar with these particular pieces, but I had all of Dvorak's symphonies, and loved them, so wanted to expose myself to his other works. However, I am a very recent graduate, which of course means very little money, so I was hesitant to purchase this recording because I knew I could get these pieces cheaper. I finally decided to get it through the prodding of my friend at the store, who said I couldn't go wrong with Itzhak. I have not been dissapointed with my purchase and would recommend this album to others.

This compilation of selections from recordings made between 1975 and 1998, including one previously unreleased to create a framework, is a curious mix. All the pieces are slow, and this being the age of the soundbite, none is longer than five minutes except the Romance by Dvorák, who is also represented by two other popular pieces, specifically arranged to include a cello part for Yo-Yo Ma. Half the program consists of "themes" from movie soundtracks, and the comparison between them is interesting. John Williams, André Previn, and Max Steiner are film composers whose juicy melodies and swooping orchestrations are appropriate to the medium, while William Walton was a "serious" composer whose style retained its austerity in his film music. Two single slow movements, from Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, and from Brahms's Third Violin Sonata, make one yearn for more. The latter is the only piece on the disc that can reasonably be called "classical;" as for the "rhapsodic" part of the title, it is certainly justified by the performances. Perlman plays everything, whether by Brahms or John Williams, with the same concentration, commitment, and emotional intensity. His expressiveness is always noble and so genuine that there is never a moment of sentimentality or condescension. The program gives him little chance to display his virtuosity, but shows off his glorious tone in all its variety, warmth, and radiance; the climaxes soar with rapturous ecstasy. His partners and accompanying orchestras could not be better. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
The Greatest .......2007-06-11
Once in a very great while, God creates a musician who even He is in awe of. Itzhak Perlman is simply the greatest violinist who has ever lived. His Violin Concerto (Beethoven) is perhaps the greatest ever recorded, while here his violin expresses the joys and horrors of Cinema Paradiso and Shindler's List, themes not to be missed by anyone.
Enchanting, moving, Perlman is magic!.......2005-04-21
I played the violin growing up and could never imagine it could be played as
beautifully as Perlman can play it. He is unequalled as far as I'm concerned,
but anyone would enjoy this album as it has wonderfully memorable show
tunes like Cinema Paradiso and Schindler's List and the most beautiful
rendition ever of Michel Legrand's If It takes forever, I will wait for you
from UMBRELLAS of CHERBOURG.
It stays in my car CD player where I enjoy it over and over!

Quite enjoyable.......2007-07-20
Some of the pieces are unfamilier music by Dvorak, but most of them are beutiful. If you like Dvorak's music, you should listen to this. Sound quality is not bad, though it is not great.
Some Dvorák Rarities and Old Friends, Nicely Played.......2005-02-20
Although I have a number of CDs conducted by Dmitry Yablonsky, and though I knew he was a cellist, I don't recall hearing him play that instrument. On the basis of this CD I'd have to say that he is one of the better cellists around these days (Side note: in an upcoming review, I'll have more raves about the marvelous German cellist Maria Kliegel, whose Bach Solo Suites has lately been causing some compulsive listening on my part.) He gets a chance here to play and conduct two Dvorák cello and orchestra pieces: the semi-familiar 'Silent Woods' and the less-well-known 'Rondo.' 'Silent Woods' ('Klid' in Czech, sometimes known as 'Waldesruhe' in German) is occasionally heard in concert. It is a contemplative pastorale originally part of a solo piano suite. It sounds as if it couldn't have been composed for anything other than cello and orchestra; it's hard to imagine a pianist being able to maintain the slowly moving legato melodic line with anything comparable to the cello's ability to sing it ecstatically. Yablonsky's cello sings like a great baritone. His performance of 'Rondo,' a six-minute minor-key work is equally well-played but the piece itself is relatively trivial, if pretty enough.
The glory of this set is the first track, a six-minute wonder, 'Mazurka for Violin and Orchestra,' Op. 49 (B90), played full-out in Oistrakhian fashion by a violinist I am only vaguely familiar with, Alexander Trostianski. Both the piece and the performance are barnburners, full of exciting rhythms, virtuosic double-stops and other violinistic sparkle. This is not deep music, but it assuredly is exciting. Too bad violinists don't ordinarily play encores in orchestral concerts after they've played the obligatory concerto. This would send the crowd out dancing. Superb!
The 'American' Suite is beautiful and reasonably well-known, and has had a number of fine recordings, among them those by Neumann, Dorati and Tilson Thomas, as well as older ones by Ancerl and Talich. It is given a competitive performance with delicacy and point by Yablonsky and his increasingly impressive Russian Philharmonic.
The rest of the disk comprises works that are not from Dvorák's top drawer. 'Seven Interludes' for small orchestra, although with some fine moments, seem pretty slight to me, although the third movement, 'Con molta espressione,' a slow 3/4 meditation, is extraordinarily lovely and played rapturously here. The 'Five Prague Waltzes' are a cut above the Interludes as music per se, and the performance is exhilarating. One wants to get up and dance around the room. But, that said, I slightly prefer a recording by the Hungarian conductor Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. 'Polonaise in E Flat Minor,' 'Nocturne in B Major' and 'Polka in B Flat Minor'--the latter an old friend that I fondly remember being played in a wind band arrangement in my own hometown with its large Bohemian population-- are all given fine performances here.
This would, I think, be a perfect budget recommendation for someone who wants to slightly broaden their knowledge of Dvorák's always tuneful and accessible orchestral music.

A Great Mix of Dvorak Favorites and Rarities.......2005-01-26
One of the reasons I love the music of Dvorak is that it is both predictable and varied. In all of his music, his distinct Czech national sound, as well as his flair for orchestration is easy to detect. Yet he is able to write some of the most creative pieces ever composed. The Naxos label has released a great catalogue of Dvorak's work. Most of the releases have some of his well known pieces as well as some of his lesser known works and this new release AMERICAN SUITE follows suite.
The best known works of the compilation include "American Suite," "The Polonaise in F Flat Major" and "Five Prague Waltzes." While all of the pieces are played beautifully by Russian Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction Dmitry Yablonsky, I found the works for soloist and orchestra most enjoyable. The "Mazurka for Violin and Orchestra" which opens the CD is a work that I am surprised is not a familiar concert showpiece and the same can be said for cello pieces "Rondo" and "Silent Woods."
Once again, Naxos has released a wonderful compilation at a reasonable price with excellent liner notes.

Very good CD. Filled with great classical music. Would recommend to anyone.
Romantic Mood Music of High Level.......2005-11-16
Collections like this are nice as an alternative to Ipod type collections, or multi-CD shuffling, achieving a nice balance and variety of compositions.
Here gathered around "romantic" classical theme, have the likes of Dvorak, Strauss, Mozart, Pachelbel, et al. Acclaimed performances by Denon Classical catalog performers such as Jean-Pierre Rampal, David Oistrakh, etc.
For two disc set of such superb quality at such a reasonable price, this is very much a play often collection.

Album Description
New Orleans Piano Rolls documents what is referred to as traditional New Orleans piano music. It is a good representation of what you might hear when you see Krown play solo piano performances. He is attempting to carry on the tradition of the great New Orleans piano styles, beginning with ragtime and continuing into boogie woogie and stride, all in the style of modern pianists, such as Professor Longhair, Dr. John and James Booker.

The Best New Orleans Piano player that you never heard of.......2005-06-22
This is a great CD! This is one of the best contemporary New Orleans piano players that you have never heard of. Joe Krown has an excellent selection of songs; they are played brilliantly, and the recording is crystal clear. This CD goes quite smoothly through all of the New Orleans "standards" from ragtime to boogie woogie and stride. The song that impressed me the most was "tipitina". Everyone in the big easy plays this one from Professor Longhair to Dr. John. Joe Krown's version is my favorite! He includes several of his own compositions, and they are fantastic. I read above that since September 1996, he's held the Traditional Piano Night slot at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans, which was once occupied by Professor Longhair and James Booker. That's good company, Joe!
Tour de Force.......2003-12-17
This is the most satisfying CD I have heard in years, with layer upon layer of artistry and creativity, not just with the old standards but with Joe Krown's 3 new compositions. Every time I listen I hear something new in this sparkling performance. His previous solo piano album was just a warm-up for these 15 amazing tracks. His organ and combo CDs are fine, but this is the one to cherish.
great music.......2003-06-22
i love joe's first solo piano cd but this one is better, great big easy music.

Customer Reviews:
An Older Version of the Collaboration Between Midori and Mehta.......2006-04-13
There are soloists and conductors who through time seem to be partnered beyond the convenience of recording companies or the media, musical partnerships that are readily apparent when they perform together either live or on recordings. Such is the case for Midori and Zubin Mehta. Though this recording dates back to 1989 is still remains a special excursion into the works of Dvorak that the two artists visited often - and still do.
Yes, there are recordings of the 'Violin Concerto in A minor' that have more fire and robust romanticism. But here Midori, still quite young, uses her gentle silvery tone to fine advantage and the support from Mehta and the New York Philharmonic is gracious.
Far more successful is the performance of the 'Romance for violin & orchestra in F minor', a work that obeys the talents of Midori in the chamber-like setting of a smaller scale (the piece was originally the Andante movement of Dvorak's String Quartet No. 5). This is a sweetly sensuous performance with the soloist in perfect balance with the orchestra.
Mehta concludes the recording with one his often played works in his repertoire, the Carnival Overture, and it is a terrific, ringing display of orchestral color and pyrotechniques. In all, this is an album worth owning, especially for the very sensitive Romance! Grady Harp, April 06
A thing of beauty.......2002-06-22
This is the only recording of the Dvorak Violin Concerto to which I have listened in detail. So, I can't say that a more mature soloist might have done it even better, or at least with more fire. Midori was only 19 when she made this record. Nevertheless, the piece itself is beautiful. Midori's playing is sweet and she has a beautiful tone. The accompaniment from Mehta and the New York Philharmonic is very fine. All in all, it is lovely, simply lovely.
Romance is to die for.......2002-06-01
Track 4 -- Dvorak's "Romance" -- is the highlight of this wonderful album, and nobody could play it better than Midori. It is ethereal, and performed so beautifully. Buy this CD and listen to track 4. You will be glad you did.
Dvorak, Midori, Metha.......2001-08-07
A picture is worth a thousand words. The combination once again of Midori and Zubin creates the possibility of their individual magic. Unleashing their talents upon the likes of Dvorak is magic and magic is what this listener can get lost in. It goes without saying that Midori brings to her violin the energy and passion of a triathilon athelete. Music is mathematics. Listen carefully and you'll hear Midori following Metha's "beats" of rhythm as if in a play. Each note has a place. Each note is placed. Bravo. Bravo. Bravo. If you like magic; you'll be magically carried away. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Picture yourself transformed as I am by this work of art.
