At this price, you can't go wrong.......1999-03-02
Six CDs for under $30, all in glorious Nimbus digital sound, with a couple of really good performances.... you cannot go wrong. No, this set will not displace Ashkenazy, Previn, Argerich, Stokowski and other famous artists who've recorded these works in more definitive performances. However, it's a great way to get to know this music, and several of the performances (the 3rd piano concerto and 3rd Symphony) are competitive. At a higher price, I'd have given it 4 stars, but it earned an extra star for excellent value.

I have over two dozen recordings of this concerto as I'm quite constatly blown away by the music and always looking for an exciting performance. Well this is it, full octane Rachmaninoff with no prisoners taken . Gorgeous sound with beautifull orchestral accompaniment. The drive never lets up and is quite relentless thru the first movement cadenza till the final notes of the third movement. Only Lazar Berman and Horowitz have found the right combination of testosterone and brilliance to match this very fine rendition. Other Rach 3's I find interesting are Cherkassky for richness, Cliburn for youthful ardor and lyricism but poorly recorded. Ashkenasy/Previn uninteresting, Agerich too bombastic without much finesse, Kissen promising for another go around in 20-30years, Weissenberg with the Chicago Symphony riveting but not on CD, Janis a near miss, Abbey Simon with Slatkin a wonderful budget set with warm romantic playing and good sound, Rachmaninoff himself the example for all who follow. This can be found in what must be the bargain of the year along with the other concertos and symphonies etc. on Nimbus all in glorious sound with and outstanding conductor and orchestra.
